The southern tip of the ridge was a canoe landing for Native Americans over 5,000 years ago and along the ridge there are several archaeological sites. This area was occupied by both the Tequesta and Seminoles. During the 1950's this area was cleared for cattle. Davie has since tried to restore some of the tree canopy. There is no dedicated parking to this preserve. You just have to pull off the side of the road. The preserve is paved with an exercise path that you can bike, jog, or walk. The cool thing about this preserve is that there is a couple of natural hills, a rare thing to see in flat Florida. Along the trail are benches and a number of protected burrowing owls nests although I didn't see any of the little guys home. At both ends of Westridge Open Space Preserve, the trail connects to Pine Island Ridge Natural Area. You can walk all the way to the back of Tree Tops Park or go from Westridge Preserve along Nob Hill Road to Bergeron Park. The Pine Island Ridge Trail is popular with horseback riders so watch where you step. I love how you can go on to other hikes from this area. If you have not explored the Pine Island Ridge yet you are missing out on one of the most natural and nature filled parts of Davie.

There are some shaded areas to chill or picnic. There are also many owl nests that have been relocated from other areas. I like to call it the "owl sanctuary". I have passed this place on Nob Hill hundreds of times and never noticed it. There is no parking. Visitors just park on the grass. I would say many of the visitors who enjoy this area probably come from the housing developments that surround the preserve. I enjoy adding the Westridge Ooen Preserve as past of my walks. When Broward County Parks were closed due to Covid-19, it was really crowded. It was a nice little piece of green that was always open when the parks were closed. Now it's pretty empty, and a nice place to stroll and enjoy a bit of nature.

It's right off Atlantic Boulevard, just west of the Sawgrass Expressway in Coral Springs. The parking lot is spacious but does get full during peak times. The trail is unpaved on gravel and dirt; it's a 27-mile loop that goes along the everglades. There were many people walking, biking, and fishing. I've seen all types of wildlife there; from alligators, snakes, and herons. Sunset is a very popular time because it's so beautiful. I had a photoshoot there and the pictures came out lovely. There are three access points, this location, the Sawgrass trailhead, Markham Park, and the Sawgrass Recreation Center. There are not many trails around the area so this is the closest thing to nature you can get out in South Florida. I've always enjoyed walking on the trail there and taking in nature, right near the hustle and bustle. Overall, a beautiful place and a must see, especially during sunset!

U.S. troops under the command of Lieutenant Colonel James Bankhead and Major William Lauderdale attacked a large Seminole village on top of Pine Island Ridge, an island in the Everglades at the time. The village was headed by Abiaka, who had recently become the principal chief of the Seminole Indians. As the U.S. troops approached the village, they were fired upon by Seminole warriors perched in the trees on Pine Island Ridge, who held off the U.S. troops long enough for Abiaka and the other villagers to escape. The attack ended in failure for the U.S. troops as they failed to kill or capture any of the Seminoles, who successfully evacuated their village without casualties. The battle was the closest the United States came to catching Abiaka during the Seminole After repulsing Zachary Taylor's army at the Battle of Lake Okeechobee, the Seminoles under the leadership of Chief Abiaka relocated south to Broward County. Abiaka and his people then built a large village on top of Pine Island Ridge, which is 29 feet above sea-level and the highest point in Broward County. A Seminole traitor named Billy Benefactor told the U.S. Military about the location of the village, and that it contained up to 100 warriors. General Thomas Jesup then ordered an operation to attack Pine Island Ridge. Jesup assigned the operation to Federal soldiers of the 3rd Artillery Regiment under James Bankhead, and volunteers of the Tennessee Militia under William Lauderdale.

While it's not a huge area, it is perfectly sized and quaint with well-lit waterfront sections that even has a few benches and some ornate statues with historical importance all throughout. It's only a block or so away from the strip with all the dining and shopping options you'd like yet it's tucked away in the corner where there's plenty of parking across the park. It's a nice stroll. My favorite part is the corner of Tarpon & Tarpon just a few steps away from the park with the beautiful tree-lined bend proving that Broward ain't so vanilla after all. It's a nice escape from the Miami bustle & the breeze is always blowing even in the peak of summer so switching up your dog walking routine and coming here is certainly a sight for sore eyes.

Lewis Landing Park in Ft. Lauderdale has quite an amazing history. Archaeological items relating to…read morethe Tequesta including animal bones, pottery shards,and shells were found in the park in 2010 indicating a village was here from 800 to 1200 A.D.. The Tequesta were Native Americans who lived along the New River for at least 5,000 years. They used dugout canoes to travel the river from the Everglades to the Atlantic Ocean. When Spain claimed Florida there were thousands of Tequesta but by the time they gave Florida to England in 1763 there were less than 300 left having been wiped out by disease and sold as slaves to Cuba. The park is named for the Lewis family who came from the Bahamas in 1792 and settled on the banks of the New River. They lived on a farm growing coconuts, guava, limes and oranges until 1824. It was believed that their farm served as a way station for the British who were trying to subvert Spanish control. In 1830, Frankee Lewis now a widow sold the land for $400. Ten years ago the park was a vacant residential property. It has now been turned into a river front park with gazebos, a jogging path, a fishing dock, an observation deck, park benches, picnic tables, and a water fountain. The only drawback to the park is that parking is extremely limited with one car parking spot and one handicapped. On January 24, 2015 a statue of a Tequesta Indian sculpted by artist Nida Comas was added to the park. Plaques on the pedestal of the statue provide information about the Tequesta people who are now extinct. This beautiful park is the perfect place to exercise, enjoy a picnic,or just take in the beautiful water view. It is also a wonderful place to sit and contemplate the people who came before us who once canoed down the waterways.

You can see people fishing from their boats as well as near the canal. I enjoy coming here whenever I want to enjoy nature and do my meditation walk. This was a charitable event to support Kids In Distress (KID) and Family Central (FCI), serving more than 20,000 children and families each year across South Florida. There were food trucks, live Dj, fun zone for the kids, face painting and kid Olympics. You're able to adopt a duck for $5. Each adoption goes towards helping a child in need. A duck race was held where all adopted ducks were let loose in the river to race. The winner of the race wins $10,000. This was such a fun thing to do with the kids. Looking forward to supporting this event next year!
