If you're into hidden history and Old West vibes, Silver Reef Ghost Town is one of the coolest stops in Southern Utah--and honestly, it feels like stepping straight into a movie set. We stopped here not expecting much, but it completely surprised us. This wasn't just any ghost town--it was once a booming mining town in the late 1800s with over 1,500-2,000 people, all chasing silver that was somehow found in sandstone (which is basically unheard of). Walking through the area, you can still see preserved buildings like the old Wells Fargo office and other remnants that give you a real glimpse into what life was like back then. The museum is small but packed with artifacts, and the guided tour adds a lot of context to the experience. What really makes this place stand out though is the setting. You've got these insane red rock cliffs surrounding the town, so it doesn't just feel historic--it's actually beautiful too. There are also trails nearby if you want to explore a little more. Cool little ghost town. Well maintained, very clean. Clear paths to walk on. Each exhibit is marked so you can go in order 1, 2, 3, etc. Quiet, deserted, adjacent to a high end neighborhood. Beautiful grounds which include yucca trees, cactus, and sagebrush. Great off the beaten path place to be still and look around. I really got a sense of good energy from there. Very cool. So goon set his drone out to follow me, buzzed behind my car guessing to get a plate, buzzed me a couple times....I flipped it off a 2-3 times and it eventually left....how rude. read more

The temperature was 90+ degrees and I don't own a Tesla with a dog comfort setting. On the internet it said the museum is pet friendly. We arrived with our dogs- 2 doodles- but we weren't allowed to participate. The man giving the talk said it was fine, but the man at the desk wouldn't allow it. They are not 100% pet friendly. Worth a Stop! Great History Spot! Loved visiting a chatting with Dave, Linda and John. We paid for the tour and Dave was who gave us the story of the history behind this location and the town that used to be. We actually had a family member who worked the mines (details still in question) but Linda got out a book she had with information on people from the past and my mom pulled out information she had from Ancestory that she had worked on and put together for our family. It was just really cool overall! The stuff they have in the building (the only and last full building standing). Fascinating stuff. They were very welcoming, so friendly and informative and it was just overall a great spot to visit while you're in the area. read more

The reason for a one star rating is...we've never been racially profiled until we visited this place over the weekend. If you're of any color, you will definitely feel uncomfortable...not even a hello or a thank you after they accepted our payment. Maybe you need to be white in order to be spoken to or to be regaled with their presentation. We received zero information or instructions on how to use the provided map. In fact, my wife happened to find the map - they didn't bother to give us one! My wife also got a brief smile from the lady in the gift shop. The area itself is interesting but it would have been nice to have felt welcome. To the gentleman with a six shooter, and the gentleman behind the counter stop trying to look intimidating and be kind. You never know who's visiting your location. Rich in history with interesting stories The museum was closed during our visit but we grabbed a trail guide map and did a self-guided tour of the town. There's not much left but some ruins and a few artifacts but I love seeing ruins and abandoned sites so we explored the two interpretive trails which took us on our journey of discovery through Silver Reef. There were markers posted of what once existed on the site. Main Street Trail (Stations 1-12) Along Main Street is the Wells, Fargo & Co. Express Station. The museum is currently located in this building but unfortunately for us we didn't get a chance to see the exhibits on mining and frontier life. This was one of the oldest Wells Fargo Express Stations in the country. Along Main Street are ruins of businesses -- once lined with various shops, saloons, office, etc. also the Silver Reef Jail is here, and the popular Cosmopolitan Restaurant (which had the reputation of serving the best hash in the territory back in the day). West and Centre Streets Trail (Stations A-K) There was nothing left in this street but markers so we referred to our trail guide pamphlet for the history and story of what once stood there. We walked all the way towards where the mine was whose ruins were visible across the gulch. There we stood near the remains of a flotation mill built in 1956. The mill processed thousands of tons of ore from the old silver mines. Interesting. I enjoy walking into history! The allure of seeing the ruins and decaying buildings is fascinating to me, it tells us a story of a different time. Be aware that this ghost town is not quite off the grid and in the middle of a residential area so use caution while crossing the streets. NOT A REAL GHOST TOWN *caution* Ken was our "guide" inside the little museum and he was such a nice man with so much information his tour of the small museums was wonderful we learned a lot. But I just want to caution others who are looking for an authentic ghost town to do a full tour of a town. There are only a few small areas of rubble. When the miners left this town others came and took all the lumber and broke down all the buildings to use somewhere else. There is no town, there are no buildings except the TINY museum. read more

If near St. George make sure you stop and have a look at some history. Silver Reef is a very short distance from I-15 and is really cool. They have a museum located in the old Wells Fargo building and there is plenty of relics and remains of the old town to see. The museum has odd hours but if you stop when they are open you can see all the cool stuff inside and they will even tour you around and show you the other buildings nearby. 3 bucks a person or 10 bucks a family to see the museum but its well worth it. Down the hill a short distance is two old cemetery's as well. read more

We really enjoyed our tour of the museum, as well as walking around the grounds. Our guide, Mike, was very friendly and knowledgable. We had our dogs with us, so after the inside museum tour we spent a couple hours walking around the grounds outside on the self guided tour. 5 stars because the people working the museum were very knowledgable and nice. They work on donations, so please either check out their shop or donate a few $$. Some of the sites are no longer standing, and it isn't much of a ghost town anymore because there are newer houses that have popped up. It is a cool place to check out if you are in the area though, and go by the museum...some of the old trinkets that have are worth seeing. read more

The staff here was very knowledgeable and was willing to share every bit of information they had. It was only $10 for my entire family to visit and was well worth the money! They had very cool artifacts and a couple of tarantulas to look at. If you're in the area, I recommend stopping by and visiting! read more

great place and the docents make the history come alive. we enjoyed also visiting the graveyards nearby. the life like Wells Fargo pony express sculpture was incredible. Highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. read more
