This review is written in reference to the Tremec TKX 5-sppeed transmission "kit" that SilverSport markets. If you purchase this transmission "kit", they claim that it will be a seamless installation. That was the first claim which turned out to be far from the truth. If the installation is seamless, that means everything goes right together like it was shipped that way right from the factory. The first indicator that you are given which disproves that claim is when they tell you that you will have to have your driveshaft shortened. In the vast majority of circles, "seamless" does not mean that you have to locate a machine shop to shorten and rebalance your driveshaft. Oh, and by the way, we may have neglected to mention that all of our Tremecs come with a standard 31-spline, FORD output shaft. So, if you have a Chevelle, GTO, GS, 442, Mopar, or AMC, your newly shortened driveshaft still isn't going to fit your car. You now have to purchase a 31-spline FORD output yoke. And, in case you didn't know it, Ford u-joint cups are a different diameter than the other makes, so now you have to find a mongrel u-joint with two different size cups to hook your driveshaft to a Ford yoke. Definitely not my definition of "seamless". The next, and bigger problem, was the clutch. As part of the kit, they ship a McLeod, dual-disk setup. Prior to installation, the flywheel was resurfaced to eliminate any potential issues there. Based on the behavioral characteristics of the clutch and my 40+ years of driving standard shift vehicles, I determined that they had shipped the transmission with a racing clutch. After the installation, trying to take off from a stop caused the car to jump, shudder and shake so bad that the fender bolts started loosening up and falling out. The screws which hold the small cover on the bottom of the shifter tower fell out and the cover fell off. Upon contacting SilverSport, they passed the buck and said to contact McLeod because it was McLeod's clutch. McLeod said give it a 500 - 750 mile break-in period. He admitted that they had gotten similar complaints from other customers, but after the break-in period, they were thrilled with the clutch. At 600 miles, it is just as bad - no improvement, and I am definitely not "thrilled". I called SilverSport and suggested that I could send them a video of how bad the clutch is behaving. They reviewed the video and said the issue is that there are no springs in the clutch disk to absorb the impact when the clutch is engaged (one of the primary characteristics of a racing clutch), and, based on my video, the solution was to modify my driving habits to accommodate the nuances of the clutch. Basically, significantly increase the engine RPMs before trying to engage the clutch (In other words, treat each stop light like your facing the staging tree at a drag strip and pray that there isn't a cop around when you dump the clutch at 3500 RPMs) At that point , I decided that any further attempts at meaningful conversation were wasted energy, so I hung up. I can't evaluate the transmission at this point because I haven't been able to drive the car enough to really get a feel for the Tremec's quality/value. What I do know is that if I decide to buy another Tremec, it won't be from SilverSport, and I definitely won't pair it to a McLeod clutch. read more

I'm saying good but wish I could say great. I have installed two TKX transmissions into friends 1969 Camaros. The first one SST sold my buddy one of their hydraulic TO Brgs and it took forever to get the air out of it. I would never buy a TO brg. that didn't have a separate bleed line coming off the bearing. I have found Tilton to be best to use. The second one I installed came with the plug in the back of the transmission jammed into the tail section and we had to destroy the rear seal to get it out. The instructions that came with the TKX says to tap it into the trans and just leave it; REALLY?? That wouldn't work anyway. When we called SST and asked them about it they said to pull it out and throw it away. I wish we could have and at least we finally got it out; (picture attached) They are a very good company but they need to start doing a few things to better serve their loyal customers. From start to finish this organization has been fantastic. I purchased 5 speed tranny and components for my 1967 Chevelle 502 and made many mistakes installing the parts. I made at least 10 call for technical help and from the person answering the phone to the owner and tec staff solved my problem. They shipped my parts ASAP with follow-ups emails. I purchased a Tremec transmission package from silver sport transmissions a couple of years back. It was for a 1968 Charger with a small block. Cost was about $6800.00. The trans kit was excellent, but did not get to utilize as i sold the Charger to buy another that had a big block. I Asked Silver sport if they could exchange the bell housing. Silver sport said they no longer used the one i had, and could not exchange. So i bought another to fit a 440. Car has been in restore for the last couple years and i went ahead and bought a Gen II Hemi instead of the 440. So i again called Silver sport, this time to exchange the flywheel. (new in package) Again, apparently they "no longer use" this flywheel. So I get to keep it, but they are happy to sell me another (no thanks). Seems a bit strange to me that these parts will fit about million engines out there but Silver sport conveniently no longer has any use for them? For me, their customer service is awesome while spending money, but not so good when you need to exchange and they're not going receive any revenue. read more

I purchased a Tremec TKX 5 speed transmission complete swap kit from Silver Sport Transmissions for my 79 Trans Am. It arrived within the time frame they gave me. It was well packed, but the instructions say you need to test the shifting before you install it due to jostling from the shipping company. Mine did not shift but you just take the shifter cover off straighten things out and you're ready to go, very simple. Everything I needed was included and it bolted right up, the only mod was a 1/2" spacer to the air cleaner to get the hood scoop back to its correct height. Then you call them up and order the drive shaft with your measurements and about 10 days later you have it. The instructions were easy to follow. The best part was the test drive, Wow felt like a new car and the motor wasn't screaming at me at highway speeds any more. I'm 100% happy with this transmission and the people that sold it to me. read more

And waited. Never heard from them. So I went ahead and filled it out again a couple weeks later and again, I heard nothing. Finally I called and said I was looking for a quote on a transmission and the dude's just like, "Okay..." So I waited. And waited. And he didn't ask any questions. So I went ahead and rambled on about my car and after giving him all the info he says they don't carry automatic transmissions. I'm like, "Really?" It just seemed odd, especially since the website says they do. He says "Yeah" and hangs up without another word. Gotta work on that customer service guys. Come on. read more

When I restored my 1958 Corvette, I decided to replace the Muncie 4 speed transmission in the car. I considered several options. Eventually, I bought a Silver Sports Tremec transmission kit. I bought the TKO 500 5 speed with the wide ratio gears. I chose the 5 speed because it is small enough to fit into a C1 Corvette without cutting the transmission tunnel. Despite having a 4.11 rear axle, I bought the wide ratio transmission to provide good initial acceleration and because the engine torque band is wide enough to handle the large difference between the ratios. The 3.27 first gear is also great for stop and go traffic and for maneuvering around the garage at low speed. I also bought the CLA-STR11 SST Advanced friction STR clutch set with FWG-1472 flywheel. From the very beginning SST was great. They provided very detailed instructions and when I had questions, Gene Charsha was right there with the right answers. I cut the bottom of the ash tray, carefully aligned the bell housing with the centerline of the crank shaft and measured for the drive shaft. My body man, replaced the body mounts to bring the body back up to the proper alignment with the frame. When I installed the engine and transmission, it truly was a perfect fit. The shifter is in exactly the right place and the transmission fits nicely in the tunnel. After putting more than 500 miles on the car, the clutch and transmission feel great. The Tremec shifts just as easily as the Muncie did. SST provides excellent value for the money. read more
