I have walked by this place so many times, so today I finally decided to give it a try! I am happy I did and I regret all these wasted years, such a nice local diner! The food was very fresh and delicious. We got a Greek omelette and a veggie eggs benedicte (both came with a side of potatoes) with some black coffee, everything was very tasty and I really appreciate how our nice waiter was always making sure that our coffee cups were full. My friend also got their Bloody Mary, which he enjoyed. We were craving chocolate chips waffles that were not on the menu, but after asking our waiter, he was very cool about it saying that they could make it without any problem. The waffle was great! They have a nice little tent on the street for these Covid19 times, so it was very pleasant to sit there as I didn't want to be in the sun. I did not even get potatoes or toast with it! This price is insane to me! The server handed me the bill and I could not identify one word on it. He did this on purpose for the outrageous charge. We have been coming to this diner on and off for many years since we live local. For the most part the omelettes are good and the service is standard. This past time when the bill arrived, I was charged $1.50 for hot water. I asked the cashier who I believe was a manager or owner since we have been there before and I have seen him, on why was he charging for hot water. The first answer was people bring in their own tea bags. I told him I did not would he remove the charge. He would not and then double talked about how much it costs him to make hot water.I asked why no charge for cold water, with ice,and he said it doesn't cost him anything for that. The gibberish just kept getting more ridiculous so I paid and left. Being ripped off by $1.50 cents now cost them customer(s) as myself and neighbors will not go back, it is a principle issue...so for a $1.50, for hot water with nothing in it, he felt this was a good decision to lose a customer. read more

We stopped here in the morning before my husband headed over to MSKCC for his chemo treatment. He was hungry and I wanted him to load up before he had to sit there all day. He ordered the Italian omelet and a tea, I had two eggs, bacon & home fries. Everything was delicious. My husband kept remarking that the omelet was huge and very nicely done.All the ingredients were fresh. It was definitely more food than we both could finish. Not in the way where one whines because everyone wants to get more for less. More in the way of being so expensive it is cost prohibitive and a marvel they still have customers. Even if you go in expecting to pay a little more, your eyes will pop when you see the bill. It's diner food. Stopped in to pick up a quart of soup for someone who used to live nearby. $15.70. Really, a quart of soup. The latest additions are signs imploring customers to tip in cash on credit card transactions. The sign wording adds to the pretense and self-importance "we prefer..." The food at the Silver Star diner is actually pretty good. Tasty, well seasoned, and overall, a quick and easy meal. The only reason for 3 stars is that it is vastly overpriced. A chicken sandwich and fries will cost you $17 + without tax and tip. I get it, its New York and expensive. I don't think that this is the best deal in Manhattan, but its good food nonetheless. It's a hard hit on the wallet when you come here for lunch but their challah french toast with either fresh strawberries or blueberries, is simply a delight! What can be better than sweet, fluffy, and warm toast? Portion-wise, it's a little bigger than you would expect. You also get to pour your own syrup and spread your own butter. A friend and I were wandering around on Sunday searching for the perfect spot to grab some brunch. Where, oh where, on the glorious Upper East Side could we find such an establishment? From across the street we saw Silver Star, and decided to give it a shot. It's a diner, for crying out loud; who doesn't love a diner?! Silver Star has good food - hearty helpings and an extensive menu. (My favorite section of the menu is the Italian fare, because the heading reads: "Let's Be Italian!" It's just so... inviting!) Omelets are fluffy and MASSIVE (although, let's be honest, despite the size you know I polished it off) with plenty of toppings/fillings available (albeit nothing out of the ordinary). I'm usually never a french toast kind of girl (traumatizing childhood experience...) but I sampled some (with fresh strawberries, which never hurts) and it was actually tasty. What I did not like was how rushed we were made to feel during our visit. Sure, a Sunday afternoon is peak time for places like this, but a customer should never be made to feel as though the waitstaff can't wait for them to leave so they can fill the table again. Pretty sure within 5 minutes of arriving we were asked three times if we were ready to order. Sheesh. ALSO - major point buster in my books (although many places do this) - they only bring out the grape jelly. And WHO likes grape jelly?! Ew. The Greek salad is mostly iceberg lettuce, with mushy domatis. A very generous portion of bland feta cheese attempts to offset the dish, but it's just salty. The matzo ball soup is nicely salted. They don't have Greek orzo chicken soup everyday, which was disappointing. But I don't think we'll return to try it. The mushroom omelet was so so, but the breakfast potatoes (homefries) are mushy and flavorless. I should have listened to the Foursquare tip to skip them - and I'd advise you do the same. The pancakes good. Thumbs up: Nice service. Brunch specials on the weekend. Good place for groups, families, kid-friendly, and old-people friendly. Thumbs down: Overpriced.
