Stopped into Silver Star on a Sunday morning for breakfast. I understand brunch rushes can get hectic, but the experience started off awkwardly. I stood in the lobby for a while looking a bit confused before anyone acknowledged me, and when someone finally did, I was simply told to seat myself. After sitting down, it took another ten minutes just to receive menus, and the two brunch menus I was handed were identical except the prices didn't match, which was strange. At that point I decided to just leave. The prices already seemed pretty high, and the slow start didn't make it feel worth sticking around to find out if the food would justify it. If you're nearby and looking for breakfast, I'd suggest heading to Tramway or Ritz Diner instead. Both are close and tend to be a much smoother experience. read more

Was up in this neighborhood for a haircut and doctor's appointment and met a friend for late breakfast/early lunch. The SilverStar does not look like a Diner and is very well appointed. The friendliness and competence of the servers were exemplary. I ordered the pancakes and then had a dessert. Both were very good, but on the expensive side. read more

An absolute tourist trap in terms of the outrageous prices. If you are a local and you must dine at this establishment, be prepared to pay upwards of 3-4 times what you otherwise would pay by walking a few blocks north or south. Plus, the food is nothing more than that of a typical NYC diner- albeit, as mentioned above, with extreme price gouging. Never, ever again. read more

I had a very disappointing experience here. I came in with my service dog and was turned away by staff who required a "permit," even after explaining that under the ADA, service animals are allowed in restaurants and no permit or documentation is required. I explained that my dog is trained to perform alerting for a medical condition. Despite this, they insisted that the "health department requires a permit," which is simply not true -- there is no such permit in NYC. As 311 states (https://portal.311.nyc.gov/article/?kanumber=KA-01499), "All dogs in New York City must have a valid dog license issued by the NYC Health Department. This includes service dogs. There are no other license or permits required for service dogs. The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) does not require state or local certification for service dogs. The NYC Health Department does not issue service dog tags or proof that an animal is a service dog." What makes this more frustrating is that I've eaten here before with my dog and had no issue, so this seems to be a training or awareness problem with staff rather than any actual policy. It felt like a clear case of misinformation and poor handling of a basic accessibility situation. I'm not looking for special treatment -- just equal access, which is the whole point of the ADA. I'd strongly recommend management train their staff on service animal policies so this doesn't happen to someone else. read more

I had the chicken pot pie -- one of the very best I have ever had! It was piping hot, just like it's supposed to be and high quality ingredients were used -- only chicken breast -- and plenty of it! Veggies were delish with the right amount dough on top and baked to perfection! My only regret was not trying the coconut cake! My server was attentive. i walked into an empty place which shouldn't been the 1st red flag. The server did not know anything of what they did or didn't have. I asked for fountain soda she gave me a can. When I said I wanted fountain she continue and to say they didn't have anything. tue cashier had to tell her that the fountain machine did indeed work. I asked for quesadillas and she said there was no sour cream. Yet again the cashier told her that wasn't true. I told her not to put the order in and we would just pay for the drinks. She overheard us paling of another place we were going to eat. Passover Feast As if fated, last summer, I discovered the best care for my illness and the soothing restaurant nearby--the Silver Star Restaurant. When I returned to the Silver Star recently, the manager handed me a printed menu. It said,"Happy Passover!" Following that, it read,"Today's Special Includes: Cup of Matzoh Ball Soup or Salad, Potato Pancake, Tszimes, Complimentary Glass of Manchewitz Wine and Holiday Special Cake" The offer came with three choices of entrees. They were all tempting. With the suggestion from the young waiter Carlos, I settled on broiled salmon. I had my usual seat next to the glass wall overlooking a busy avenue. The historic spacious corner restaurant was quiet and sun filled. Before long, the waiter in black with a pink tie reappeared. He brought me the unexpected, for the sweet wine and colorful salad were only the prelude for the second course. The salmon was for a family! It was several times the size of a regular serving in any restaurant. It was accompanied by two side dishes. And of course, it tasted as it looked. It was fresh, crispy and tender inside. I applauded such delicate touch. Sipping the deep red wine, I was touched by the graciousness of Passover. I felt joy. read more

I had food delivered tonight. I ordered a turkey burger and Manhattan clam chowder. The chowder was tasty with plenty of clams and veggies. They delivered the burger without a bun and said they thought that was what I asked for. They did bring a bun within a short period of time. But the turkey burger was horrible, extremely dry and it tasted like it had been in the freezer forever. I called them to let them know my experience. I hey didn't offer to compensate me in any way. I love this diner. It's around the corner from MSK, i65th and 2nd, and I have gone several times before or after an appointment. It's like stepping back in time, to a place where you were welcomed and appreciated, and where the service is thoughtful and kind. Even though I go only randomly, the staff remembers me and welcomes me. The food is great quality diner fare, the portions generous and the service is fast for made to order food. I'll preface this by saying that I'm not really a diner gal, so this UES gal spent 28 years walking right by this spot. I recently went for brunch with a friend who used to live across the street, and wanted to eat here for old time's sake. Needless to say, I had low expectations. Like all most other diners in the city, the menu is expansive and prices are relatively high. For one breakfast/lunch dish and an iced tea each, we paid about $25 each. Veggie panini with fries: not really a panini, but both the sandwich and the fries were delicious and generously portioned. Would request no carrots next time, because half the veggies were carrots and that made it too sweet for me to love. Spinach pie with Greek salad: SO tasty. I always order spanakopita at diners, and never regret it. Can't go wrong. Chicken salad platter: honestly a bizarre dish (cole slaw, chicken salad, and potato salad) but it was what exactly she wanted and just right for outdoor dining on a hot day. Our server was fabulous -- so accommodating and friendly, and brought us some extra cole slaw and pickles to nosh on! Also continuously refilled our iced teas, which was clutch on a 90 degree day! read more

This diner is... great? I don't know why the prototypical NYC diner experience is so clearly defined the way it is but this place checks every box for better or for worse. It's sad and ugly inside. The coffee sucks but they keep filling it up. I got a BEC on a role and it was... fine - but came out in literally less than 2 min from when I ordered. There are no surprises on the menu - just a whole bunch of diner staples and then some random stuff you wouldn't expect to be available under the same roof. All of it is probably... fine. The prices are laughably high - again perfectly in line with expectations for an NYC diner. The pace of service was... casual. I loved it. I moved from NYC to a suburb last year and this is the exact experience I miss most. I hope this place is around for 100 years. read more

We came here for lunch on Saturday, August 2nd, 2025, around 2:30pm, and there were hardly any people there. I would like to give this place a reward for being the worst restaurant in America. I have been in states like Arkansas or New Mexico where I had mediocre food but this place beats them all. We ordered egg benedict with potatoes, couple of soups, and chicken salad sandwich. Everybody has different tastes, I get it. My guess is that this place uses the lowest quality ingredients possible. The fried potatoes looked like they sat in storage for 10 years before they decided to cook them. I don't want to describe the taste. The size of the small soup is slightly bigger than the dish you use to dip your sushi. Chicken salad tasted sour, I could not figure out if it was a Mao or some other unknown white sauce. We ordered a lemonade that was so sour that you could chase tequila with it. Overall, it is a terrible place, and I don't know how they stay in business in NYC. read more

Solid fast, casual dinner on the Upper East Side. Prices are a little high for a diner but for the location it is reasonable. I came here alone for breakfast on a weekday and ordered an omelette with home fries and sausage. It came out super quickly (less than 5 minutes). That made me worry a bit about how fresh and hot it would be. The homefries weren't hot, which was a disappointing and it wasn't seasoned. But they weren't terrible - just nothing to write home about. It's hard to mess up the sausage and eggs and both were good. They did keep the hot coffee coming and overall were kind to me. RIGHT NOW, THIS IS COVID 19, Corona Virus PANDEMIC time, and you can enjoy your meal outside at several tables, or take-out, or delivery . On Sunday, July 26, 2020, at about 6pm-ish, I sat outside at a table, I called the restaurant and told them I was sitting outside, and asked if I could tell them my order on the phone. I like that because I don't have to worry about coming face to face with anyone. EVERYONE I SAW WAS WEARING A MASK. I was quite hungry, I ordered breakfast for dinner. See my photos. THE FOOD WAS DELICIOUS. THE SERVICE WAS FRIENDLY, FAST AND ATTENTIVE. It was my FIRST MEAL OUTSIDE DURING THE PANDEMIC. It was great. Excellent service and food. I left a generous tip for two reasons--the server was great, and this is the Pandemic time, which we have been dealing with for months already, and every food establishment is tremendously challenged at this time, so in my own little way, whether it's a restaurant, or take-out, or my fav local bagel place, if I am able, I try to put as much as I can in the tip jar, or gratuity. In this case, sitting outside on the sidewalk, I happily handed the tip to the server. This was a perfect breakfast for dinner, and I really loved it, and sitting outdoors on a lovely, sunny evening. I even got to talk to a friendly stranger about his Dad's Tesla, and its smooth ride. I saw 2 Teslas while I sat outside enjoying my meal. It was all wonderful ! ...The food, the service, and the scenery. There was a pretty palm near my table, too. I got a kick out of the Teslas, tho. About a month ago (perhaps to keep up with the stylish looks of the recently opened Green Kitchen) the restaurant redid their interior giving it a clean , comfortable, modern look, and feel. That said, we recently visited for dinner. I had a special on the menu, a large half of perfectly cooked roast duck , with a very good orange sauce. It came with excellent sides and for starters some fresh baked challah brought promptly to the table by an attentive and friendly staff. Most restaurants on the UES serve only medallions of duck which I find unexciting as a main course. My wife had their bison burger which, as previous, was large, fresh tasting and cooked just right. I might add their large assortment of cakes are baked in house and I find their strawberry shortcake one of the best I have ever tasted. For the price and consistent quality of food this restaurant deserves a solid four plus stars. read more

What can I say! It's a diner. Nothing fancy. Nothing awful. I needed to meet a friend in the neighborhood and this was 1/2 way b/w us. I wanted an egg white omelette and I got it. The coffee is plentiful and the food does arrive quickly. It was a decent place to meet for an hour and that is what we did. The days of cheap diners in NYC are gone. Came back to my old stomping ground to have Breakfast with the wife and the Restaurant has changed incredibly and has changed to all new Look, looks great.. spoke to the Manager and told it's been over 30yrs and it was great to be back and still has the best breakfast.. try there tuner on white toast and a side of fries and coke you can't go wrong ....ITS GREAT TO BE HOME AGAIN read more
