Long overdue review. After I completed my retaining wall in our backyard, it was time to move onto finishing the yard with full pavers and artificial turf. I met with a few different contractors, and after meeting Jose and his team, I went with Simancas Landscaping and was very happy with the decision. I actually created the plan myself for the backyard, and reviewed it with Jose and it came out exactly as I had hoped! I did all the landscaping myself, but I am sure that his team could've also done that as well. We also decided to pave over our concrete California Room to make everything cohesive, and the finished product came out better than expected. Jose was very communicative throughout the project, and when problems arose, we worked together to move past them. The original owner "Simancas" guaranteed his work and gave us his word that he would come back to take care of any issues we might have in the future. It was a pleasure to work with Jose and his team. I consulted with two other landscapers prior to choosing Simancas Landscaping and I'm extremely happy with our decision and end result. Pros: 1. Most reasonably priced for good, quality work. Jose is very fair with his quotes and any potential adjustments. 2. Your satisfaction is Jose's #1 priority. Throughout the project, at each milestone step, he consults with you to gauge satisfaction and discuss next steps. Plans may alter accordingly but you are informed throughout the process. 3. Easy to contact. I've worked with contractors and landscapers in the past that do not readily respond. Jose always answers my call and/or at least returns my call by end of day. Con: (and I'm only writing one because I don't trust reviews that have nothing but good things to say) 1. If you're sticking to a tight schedule or deadline, let the team know that upfront. Working on home improvements oftentimes results in delayed timelines. My experience was not any different this time around, but Jose would always explain the reasoning and was extremely fair. We got the trees and flowers planted from this company. They also brought in small pebbles and bark to get our garden looking good. Everything was good for about a week but then I noticed the (2) trees leaves were rotting from inside or some parasite or insect is eating the leaves. I called and texted Jose multiple times about this issue. First time he told me that he would replace the trees but I haven't heard anything back from him in 3 weeks. For spending $2000 dollars on the backyard and getting old rotten trees is unacceptable. Now we are stuck with these (2) trees that are going to die soon. Jose took the money right away but any promise that he made to us in regards to quality of the trees and flowers is bullshit. Wouldn't recommend him or his company to anyone. read more

Jose, Miguel, and their crew are amazing and we're glad we chose them to build out our backyard and side yards! Jose referred us to his designer and the whole design process was easy and efficient. Jose was always in constant communication with us to inform us what they were going to be working on in our backyard and to ask us for approvals on any changes he wanted to make. Our city required us to get approvals and a permit to get an arbor built in our backyard. Miguel took care of the whole permitting process for us with the city. Pricing for our whole project was fair and reasonable. Timing of the project was only delayed because of the backlog of permit applications with the city. I contacted Jose back in February about replacing my grass lawn with artificial grass. Due to the corona virus the process took a little longer than expected but the job was done very well. Jose and his crew placed the artificial grass perfectly on my lawn and placed new plants around it. He also replaced the old bark with new bark. I'm very happy with the results. This past summer, I contacted Jose to discuss a full backyard landscape job. I had already looked up other companies to get multiple quotes, but after meeting with Jose, I felt he understood just what I was envisioning at a fair cost so I hired him on the spot. (I had already had horrible experiences with contractors overcharging and then hiring one that did a crappy job putting in the colored cement slab for a gazebo). His crew was out there the next morning and within a week, and they did the following: drip line, drought resistant plants, rocks, DG, artificial grass for the dogs, electric line out to the gazebo, and adding some of my details including a trellis with climbing jasmine. When they were done, before they left, the guys gave my front yard a little cleaning at no cost. I'm VERY happy with the results and will be using them again for sure! We had several areas of our yard that needed repair; stump removals, removal of tree roots that had grown under and disrupted many pavers, paver re-leveling, five sections of fencing and gate replacements, replacing a courtyard perimeter garden wall, relocating/replacing irrigation valves. I didn't give him much to go on as far as what I wanted in the front, but he immediately understood what I wanted and made it a reality. I now have a beautiful, drought tolerant landscape with a dry creek made of rock. I'm sure my neighbors are delighted! The back yard was more straightforward designwise, but required taking out a retaining wall and a cement pad and installing pavers. He also needed to deal with the roots of a massive tree I had to remove earlier this year in order to lay sod in the remaining yard. Very disappointed in Jose, he ruined all my Japanese maples and promised me for a year to fix them. They could not repair irrigation or do seasonal pruning. For 200 a month I thought I was hiring educated Gardner's. What a huge upset for us to have all our maples destroyed, and no clear answers or help on why he did this. I don't want to write this because I don't like giving bad reviews, but I feel like I need to warn people about this company. I hired Simancas about a year ago when I couldn't pick the weeds in my front yard due to a back injury. I asked him to do a one time full cleanup of my yard plus weekly maintenance. He and his crew did a solid job on the cleanup, but then stopped coming weekly. I called Jose and got it sorted out. When I received the first bill, we were overcharged for the weekly cleanup. I called Jose and left messages. I finally got ahold of him after the third call and we sorted it out. Since then, it had been great, until this April. His crew stopped showing completely. The weeds were out of control, the leaves piled up, everything overgrown. I called Jose multiple times, left messages, but got no return calls. I finally got through to him and he said he would check it out and call me back. He never did. I waited two weeks and called him again. This time he answered and found out his new employee had been skipping my house! He said he would rectify it and have someone do a thorough clean up last Friday or Saturday. It's Wednesday and no one has come. I've left 3 voicemails, and a few texts over the span of 4 days. I've been completely ignored. Don't forget I've paid Simancas for all the service we're not receiving. I understand mistakes are made, but there's no excuse for ghosting the customer. read more

When reading all these reviews I was wondering if I have hired the same Jose/Simanca you guys are referring to. I have had nothing but disappointment since I hired him couple months ago. Communication is zero. One time they showed up (without previous note) one day ahead of regular week day. Jose rarely pick up my calls; I asked Jose to communicate his guys to be careful with the side gate and this guy left the side gate wide open all the time; Thanks God I was working from home those days so I could get the dogs inside; Told the guy to NOT do it again and he did the same thing week later; This Friday they were a non show; he told me his son would be coming on Saturday (after I called him 3 times; plus voice mail; plus 3 follow up texts); guess what? His son didn't show up, Jose did not pick up my calls and later reply to a text asking for my home address. He told me that his son didn't come because he didn't know where I live. He said he would call on Friday to confirm the time. I called and texted him three times Friday with no response.
