This review is long overdue. I called Jorge in April 2016, looking for someone to do a one-time job to clean up the yard. He came out, took a look, and provided with me a fair estimate. Jorge asked me questions I didn't know answers to - mostly because they were questions to things I had never thought of. Once we established how clueless I was, he spent a little more time explaining and walking me through some of the basic things I'd need to know. Jorge was very courteous and polite. We have been using Jorge's company for over a year now. They do a very good job of maintaining the lawn and keeping the leaves to a minimum (ie, mow and blow). Ordinarily that would justify 4 star rating, but I consider them to be 5 star because of their pricing policies. Every other company I have either used or gotten an estimate from charged/would charge almost double what Jorge charges for his work. I am not the kind of person who just wants to pay the lowest price for a service. I can live with almost any price as long as it is reasonable and makes sense. Many gardeners are part of a larger landscaping business, so you get charged more commercial level prices. But Jorge and his crew look at each customer individually and price according to what it takes to get the job done (and make a fair profit, of course!). For this reason I believe 5 stars are more than justified. If that wasn't enough, Jorge sometimes leaves me notes that call attention to various problems with the yard, like the weeds are out of control (we have separate weed control company handling that), or the watering needs to be adjusted, etc. He is very diligent and conscientious about how he does the job. After living in our house for almost 15 years, and using a total of 5 different gardening companies over the years, I rate J. Lopez Gardening as the best we have had. read more

Brian is a miracle worker!.. .and probably one of the nicest guys I've ever met. Polite, prompt, neat, communicative, shows concerns for pets, carefully asked me what I wanted and what I didn't want, and did what he promised in record time for a reasonable amount. What more could you ask for? I had overgrown weed, leaves, WEEDS, overgrown pots, did I mention WEEDS...lol...It was a complete MESS. I've been using Jorge for my front and back yard maintenance. The lawns look better than they ever have. He's even offered to pull dead plants and has given me advice on what might work in the yard. George does an excellent job of taking care of our yard. His rates are very reasonable. He takes the initiative to do whatever is needed (like fertilizing, lawn aerating) to keep the yard looking great. In addition, he will trim trees, hedges, repair/extend sprinkler systems, etc. upon request. We've made use of his extensive network of contacts when other projects have come up comes (electrician, tree trimming, etc.). I hired Jorge last spring to care for my yard weekly; after 4 months I let him go. For the most part he did a good job. The lawn was mowed, most of the debris was blown. He fertilized the lawn at least once. He "sprayed" the weeds and moss. He did a couple of extra things I asked for: removed a medium sized bush and trimmed the hydrangeas. He was easy to communicate with over text message and/or phone. The first sign this was not going to work was Memorial Day. I asked what day he would come instead, since he routinely came to my house on Mondays. He said he wouldn't. He took holidays off, so my house would be skipped. I was not aware of this policy. Accepting Monday was hard enough, as my yard always looked its worst on the weekend, but finding out he was blowing me off all together on Monday holidays was disappointing to say the least. He was adamant that he told me about this. I am equally adamant he did NOT. He offered that I could pay weekly instead. I prefer to avoid excessive mathematics and just send one check per month, so I declined. I have two dogs who are trained to do their business along a side fence. The area needs to be blown/raked, but Jorge complained that he could not work where there was excrement from the dogs because he has many day care contracts, and if he tracks fecal material from dogs there and a child becomes ill, he is liable. He gave me a "warning" about this and said he'd rather lose one house than all his day care contracts. This was yet another of his "policies" about which I was unaware, yet he insisted he told me. (Warned me?) I generally clean up the area every other day or so. I try to make sure the poop is picked up the day before my gardener comes as a courtesy; every other gardener I've had in 20 years has just dealt with it if it wasn't pristine. Not Jorge. He just ignored the area all together. I wondered what would happen when that area was full of fallen leaves (and hidden dog poo)... He butchered my hydrangeas with an electric trimmer and they look HORRIBLE. I falsely assumed when the flowers were spent, they'd be trimmed. Again - 20 years of gardners have done so. I had to ask him more than once. Couldn't he see they looked awful? If I had time to do yard work, I wouldn't hire someone to come weekly and care for my yard. The truth is Jorge didn't seem to care at all! He was in and out of here as fast as he possibly could be, and he wanted extra money (30% more) during the fall when the leaves would be heavy. Jorge should provide a contract which outlines his "policies," so that customers are not blind-sided by them. Each time I indicated I was not informed of a policy, a better response would have been to apologize rather than just insist that I was mistaken. He might be entitled to his uncaring and disrespectful attitude had he provided a written contract detailing all his policies at the start. When I sent him a message stating I wished to discontinue his service, all he had to say was, "No worries." If he cared about having my business, his response would have been much different. read more

I was not planning to write a review but then I saw Jorge's inaccurate reply to the review left by my wife (Doune r). Jorge makes a number of claims which are false in his reply. He mentioned that the irrigation pipe was broken previously. He broke it during the work (taking out shrubs) and he offered to fix it next time he comes. That of course did not happen. He also did agree to haul away the excess trash when he gave us a quote. We being naive did not get that in writing and he flat out refused once the time came. The plants he took out we're rotting in summer heat for 4 weeks in two big piles in our backyard. Jorge was not professional in his interactions with us. We did not nickel and dime him and paid him his asking quote. However he simply did not deliver on his end of the deal. read more

I used George's service for about 3 months. The first month, he did a good job of trimming some of the bushes and mow the lawn. So we just let him do his work without question. One day, we saw our yard's bushes were all messy, stuff grows out of control, so we expected George to trim them on his next visit. However, in the next few visits, he didn't trim anything, all he did was mowing the lawn and blow leaf (when there is barely any leaf to blow since it was summertime). Sometimes, i timed him to see how long he worked on our yard and he only spent 15 mins at my front and back yard. He came to my house 4 times a month and all he did was mowing the lawn, even though we make an agreement on maintaining my front and back yard which including take care of flowers, bushes, etc. In addition, He didn't show up to do the work if your house is scheduled the same date as the holiday and he wouldn't make up for that not showing up day. I hired a different gardener and he said the previous person really did a bare minimum job on this landscape. My new gardener couldn't believe someone was maintaining our landscape 4 times a month because it looks like they only took care of it once a month. After seeing what the real gardener can do for our yard, George is just a mowing lawn guy, not a professional gardener. read more

Terrible service quality and very unreliable. I talked to Jorge back in November about doing some work on early April. When I called him in April he said he hadn't planned for it, but eventually he managed to make time for it. He was supposed to remove few plants, haul away the trash, and plant new trees. He came, removed the plants, broke a bunch of irrigation and stopped there saying he had to leave. He didn't haul away the trash as he said he would. He said he would come by the following week with his pick up truck to finish cleaning up. I trusted him and paid him. He came back, filled up my trash can, but left the remaining trash in my backyard instead of hauling it away as agreed. Overall he had a terrible attitude. He was unreliable and never stood by his schedule. He didn't allocate enough time to finish the job. He broke a bunch of irrigation that he didn't fix. I strongly would discourage hiring him, you're wasting your time and energy. read more

George is great! He keeps our garden looking neat and our house is the best kept garden on the block. We are very pleased with his work and happy we found him. His prices are very reasonable and he is reliable. He comes every week as he promises. There are other gardeners that tell you they will come and then they don't, but George is honest and comes around the same time on the same day each week! He helps us trim our hedge, blow away all the leaves that cover our entire front yard and keeps our little plants looking cute and neat and helps mow the lawn. I also like how you can make payments electronically and you get a proper bill electronically. He is very professional, responsible, dependable, and he does great work! I was really excited to find a new service to work with after my gardener of ten years retired. I was even more excited to find a small family owned business because I like supporting family owned businesses in general, and the service tends to be more friendly and positive. What a disappointment this was. I see all these positive reviews on J Lopez Gardening service, but my experience was less than positive. From the get go, there was little to know enthusiasm about taking my job. I thought perhaps that was because it was so far north and a long drive, but I was told that they worked in my area on Tuesdays. I was quoted a very reasonable monthly amount, and was fine with the retainer approach that was told to me. Honestly I would have paid more. I needed a clean up to get my yard in shape since it had been about 5 weeks since my former gardener had been out. I was fine to pay more, but Jorge seemed to act like I was being cheap or would have issues with it. He often approached the conversations from a no posture...no we can't do this. The final straw for me was a nasty voicemail left for me telling me I should have called him to let him know I had fence work going on and that I should know that he could not work near other workers even if he had room, due to hazards and such. I did not know my fence people would be there so there was no way for me to call in advance, and he seemed to work around the fence work the week prior, so I was pretty bothered by that message. Overall this group did not want to do work with me and it was clear. I have never had any service group work with me like this. I am super reasonable, flexible, and positive. I was fine with the rates and all the things that were told to me that were "no." But at some point it would have been nice to see that they cared about having my business. It only took a minute or two since we just needed a cleanup and maintenance of our weeds, lawn, and leaves (lots of leaves). He gave a reasonable quote and made arrangements to come the next day to get started and worked with us to schedule the weekly maintenance on a day that worked for us and him. I actually met Jorge about 4-1/2 years ago when I had sold him a pick up truck. I mentioned to him that we currently have a gardener that takes care of the gardening on the ground level. We have several trees on the property and five of them were growing over the house. I was very concerned about the branches breaking and causing roof damage. My biggest concern was having someone who was knowledgeable, experienced, and was not going to do any structural damage. Since we just had metal gutters put on all around the home we did not want any gutter or roof damage. He gave us a bid, which was very reasonable. Jorge did a great job, with no damage and in a timely manner. Jorge is now our full time gardener.
