I am not sure how I feel about this place specially that we have so many Indian options in town. On a Friday evening I was driving by I decided to try it and keep it on the light side. I ordered the chicken tikka which was super bland I had to ask them to grill it a bit more and add some seasoning to it. Usually the chicken tikka burst with masala flavors. I felt it is definitely Americanized. The service was ok. I asked to replace the rice with some cucumbers or veggies... he came up with potatoes and carrots side dish swimming in oil. I mean the flavor was ok but trying to keep it light wasn't an option anymore. I saw few couples enjoying their evening and they seem to pleased with their food... I guess not me... Went for lunch today with my wife and it had been years because we no longer live near it. It was so good. My wife had the lunch buffet and enjoyed it. They brought out fresh garlic naan for her. The owners and our favorite waiter Julio are all very friendly. There has never been a dull moment at this wonderful place. Here is a review of Simi's, a favorite of many Yelpers on review. The restaurant is found in a retail center, across from a larger mall in Balcones Heights. There is ample parking, and first impression is the aroma of food in preparation as it wafts across the area from the several eateries in the area. I must confess this is my first visit for Indian cuisine ever!! Marjan and my boy Buddy and his beloved Eva are well acquainted with the nuisances of Indian foods, ergo, my initiation to this iteration of comestibles. We entered the restaurant without reservation, immediately greeted by a very agreeable staff and directed to our table. The environ is casual, with images of Indian art and tapestries adorning the walls. The ambience is quiet, allowing easy conversation at our table. We began our adventure with aperitifs. We chose two beers to share, the Himalayan blue, and the Taj Majal. The Blue is a pale lager, smooth on the palate, a flavor that we all found most enjoyable. We also sampled Taj Mahal, another lager, with a bit of malty taste. All agreed both were flavorful, but the edge was given to the Himalayan! We began our exploration of the menu with the vegetable samosa, a staple, the crust light and tasteful, the inner vegetables pleasing in flavor. We all agreed this was a winner of an appetizer. As there were four of us at table, we were unsure of ordering, but our waiter suggested the Empire, a sampler of dishes, that could be prepared for our party. Included: white rice and naan. Excellent suggestion! Included were chicken tandoori, excellently prepared, tender and moist...delightful. Saag paneer, the Simi offering of spinach and cream sauce and cheese, again a favorite for the table. The lamb curry was tender, mild in flavor, just melt in the mouth perfect. The chicken masala was offered in a tomato-based yogurt sauce, again delicious. There was offered a vegetable dish with spices, quite the compliment to the entrees. Marjan, most the experienced in Indian cuisine, thought the spices mild and comfortable for the palate, not the over-the-top spicing that some would enjoy with Indian cuisine. Think, for example, the very spicy Mexican foodstuffs that push the limit of the Scoville scale. Everyone at table considered the entrees most enjoyable, and from the perspective of yours truly, a veritable newcomer to this flavor of cuisine, a hearty thumbs up! The food and service are both excellent. They are not currently offering a buffet and the menu is not very descriptive. This may not be the best choice for folks not already familiar with Indian food. None of the meals come with rice or Naan; everything must be ordered a la carte. Lunch for 3, including appetizers and sides was $60. I greatly enjoyed the flavor of the Ceylon lamb, though the meat was quite tough. It was a satisfying portion size when paired with a side of rice, but not enough for leftovers. My friends each ordered the tandoori chicken. Those were very generous portions and they could of easily split one order. read more

Ambiance, the booths are very uncomfortable my friend was sinking into the cushion. Our waiter was caustic and this makes no sense because on the numerous times we've been to Simi's over the years since at least the mid 90's maybe longer, the service was very agreeable and attentive (boarding on to attentive). Turning to the food every thing on the buffet was over cooked or cold. For instance the Saag Paneer was fairly bland and no cheese or tofu it used to have. Tandoori Chicken dry and cold. Naan cold and chewy. Even the Chicken in sauces were cold and tough. What can I say if you're really hungry straight down to Fredericksburg Rd. and Wurzbach and eat at the India Palace. I am not exaggerating when I say is the absolute best Indian food I have ever had in the entire world and I have been to India and Nepal. I tend to gravitate towards the vegetarian dishes, but everything on the menu is scrumptious. The owners, the things, Nancy and Amar sing are just wonderful. They're very welcoming and friendly. Indian is my favorite. Very rarely do I ever throw Indian food away. In this case we did. It's just not worth eating. Watery and bland is how I would describe the three dishes we had. I was told 30-35 minutes for the food it ended up being 1 hour from the time I called till I walked out the door. Stuff happens. I just wanted great food. Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Vindaloo usually have quite a distinct difference in the sauce. In this case they were almost identical as well as the sauce for the butter chicken. Not sure what happened. The dishes had heat but no flavor. One of the weirdest experiences eating Indian food, how can it have so little flavor? My salad at lunch had stronger flavors. The naan was really thick and did not have a good cook on it at all. Many reviews mention having to order rice with it. And you need to. Not the worst Indian food I've had but definitely the worst I've had in San Antonio. It was a friend's recommendation, would not go back. read more

Love this Indian food. So fresh and flavorful. They aren't serving the buffet right now, so you order off the menu, so everything is very fresh. The empire dinner for 2 was a perfect amount of food for my husband and I. The choices were also exactly what we wanted. It was a good combination of foods that complimented each other and hit all the spots we were craving. The wait staff is attentive and engaging. 2 hours ago NEW I walk in and the sweet staff greets and seats me immediately. The place is nice and clean. My server Julio not only looked good but smelled good. I told him I'm a new Vegetarian and he offered me all the vegetarian plates they had. He so kindly explained the sweet sauce and spicy sauce and what each vegetarian plate came with. This restaurant was highly recommended to me so I thought I would give it a try. First things first, the owner & staff were very pleasant; however, the food left a lot to be desired. Was hoping to order off the menu but was encouraged to go with the buffet. Very disappointing, I have never ever in 55 years tasted a Chicken Tikka Masala that was sweet (?), Tandoori Chicken was overcooked and tough, Naan was cold but some fresh Naan appeared and it was tasty as was the rice & Dahl Chana. Also, in the buffet was a Vindaloo Sauce but no meat (Odd?). The Vegetable Samosa was limp & only had potato inside. The buffet price of $16 was outrageous! For those that have been coming to Simi's for years and haven't had a chance to come back since Covid, the buffet is back and just as delicious as I remember it to be. Those that have not experienced the buffet, show up for lunch! The selection allows you to try a little bit of everything thing including soups and different sauces. Top off your meal with a chai tea, cold for the summer and hot for the colder weather. The wait help are so nice and always checking on you to make sure you are good, and never leave you glasses empty or if you need some extra naan as it always running out and being made consistently throughout your time visiting this restaurant. I used to really like Simi's and have been there a few times, but hadn't been in a couple years. Went today, was seated right away; they weren't overly busy. The server walked by my table at least 10 times over a 15 minute period without so much as acknowledging my existence. When he finally came over and I attempted to order, I discovered that everything on the menu is now a la carte. This meant that a standard entree with rice and and a piece on naan would have topped $20 for lunch. I understand trying to survive through Covid, but this was utterly ridiculous.
