Discovered @afghankababhouse on Groupon and thought to check it out for dinner tonight. Sayeed welcomed us and helped explain some of the menu items. All of us tried the Fresh Mango Juice. If you've had the Indian Mango Lassi, it's very similar with a thicker consistency than juice. We had the Boranee Banjan/Eggplant, Lamb Karahi (lamb with gravy), Kabuli Palaw/Lamb Shank with sweet biryani rice with 2 sides of spinach and Chopan Kabab/Lamb Chops. All the food was excellent and tender! The lamb chops were on the spicy side. I believe it's curry spice. There was so much complimentary bread. We also had 2 plates of complimentary salad. We ate quite a bit but also had leftover. If you're in the Medical Center area and looking for an off beaten path place to try, check this place out!

Haven't had this authentic of Afghan food in many years. Everything was absolutely delicious and full of flavor. Had both elevated carpet and table seating options. Just go. You won't be disappointed.

While attentive, the food and the seating did not meet my expectations. It was hard to be comfortable seating on a carpet.

It's a combination restaurant in the front and small market at the back, which gives it a warm, community feel. From the outside, the building looks a bit run down, so if you're coming purely for ambiance, just know the real highlight here is the food and the service. If you're looking for delicious Afghan comfort food, you should definitely give their Qabuli Palau a try - or order it for takeout. The Qabuli Palau was excellent. The shank meat was so tender it practically fell off the bone - flavorful and hearty. Service was warm and welcoming. You can tell it's family-run, and that personal touch really shows. There is a restroom available for customers (I didn't personally use it, so I can't comment on that). The space overall could use a little facelift, but the food makes it worth the visit. My total came out to $36.51 for 2 dishes, a hot tea, and a small chocolate bar. After reviewing the itemized receipt (with San Antonio sales tax at 8.25%), the math didn't quite line up with the posted prices. One small piece of constructive feedback: the menu pricing appears to be outdated, and it might be helpful for the owner to update the menu or clarify pricing so it doesn't accidentally cause confusion or trouble down the road. I'm sharing this because I'd hate to see a hardworking family business run into avoidable issues. Overall, the food and hospitality were the highlights for me. Don't judge it by the exterior - just come for the Qabuli Palau and the welcoming service.

Both were tasty and were very similar in taste from our recent visit to Turkey. Lots of flavor going on at the same time and I have developed such a taste for the traditional rice. Light and flaky. I believe the owners are Arabic, but not actually Lebanese. Although we have traveled to the middle east, but not to Lebanon, I cannot say for certain if it is authentic or not. What I can say is the food was delicious and definitely used some of the same spices we are familiar with. The inside dining was for smaller parties of less than 6, and fit our needs on this visit.

I chose something simple and it was very tasty. I ate it all very quickly. I do however wish I were a fan of pistachios as it was very picturesque behind the glass display case. I topped off my meal with a very flavorful drink that vaguely reminded me of Sonic's cherry limeade. A fast-food drink I love, by the way. I told my daughter we have to go back and in the meantime I recommend this restaurant highly.

I decided to order a mini Persian feast: the beef koobideh with rice, doogh yogurt drink, and a saffron ice cream for dessert. This was my first time trying beef koobideh, and unfortunately, this just didn't seem to be very good. The meat itself was okay, decently cooked, and topped with quite a lot of some spice that I can't quite put my finger on. It was okay. The rice though, that is what really disappointed me. Persian rice is usually amazing, but this really didn't seem traditional and it had a strange taste to it. It also came with onion and a grilled tomato, both solid additions. Good portion though. The doogh yogurt drink wasn't homemade like I had hoped, but in all honesty, it still really hit the spot on a hot Austin day. Reasonable price. The saffron rice was also fairly disappointing. Large white chunks (clotted cream maybe? But they were pretty tasteless), gritty texture, not much flavor. Just not really worth it. All in all, a bit of a disappointing dinner in Austin. I'll have to look for a different Persian spot next time I'm in the area.
