From the first call to the end of the job, Simmons glass has been one of the most courteous and professional businesses I've worked with in the SF Bay Area and beyond. A fallen over olive oil bottle caused a small crack in the mirrored backsplash of my kitchen. In renting this unit, I hoped it would be a cheap and easy fix. Unfortunately, it required having the entire panel removed and replaced by a custom cut sheet. :( Skip was very responsive and friendly with both the mirror and job estimates. In discovering an added outlet cutout requirement, he came out to measure the mirror and outlet dimensions to ensure the fit. Originally, to save $$ and being quite handy, my friend and I had planned to buy the mirror and replace it ourselves. But the added outlet would have required specialized knowledge and tools for further cutting/adjusting on the spot. :( Skip and his crew made this an even better decision and a seamless repair. I am overdue for writing this review, but I tend to wait a bit to make sure someone's craftsmanship survives the test of time. The first time I called Simmons glass was after I was dealt with rudely by East Bay Glass who also gave me a ridiculously expensive estimate for getting 12 glass panels made for a brand new balcony railing. So I did some more research and found these reviews on Simmons glass and decided to give them a call. Skip answered the phone, we scheduled an appointment for him to look at the railing system and measure all the panels. He got back to me (after a couple of calls) and gave me a reasonable estimate and timeline. He completely delivered on it (and actually physically delivered the panels to my house). Stress free experience. That was over 2 years ago and the railing still looks great. So when it came time to have a large frame-less glass shower built (6 feet by 4 feet), I decided to call skip again. I was a bit more worried about it because it was not clear to me whether his crew had much experience with frame-less showers, but Skip came prepared with materials and clearly explained what the project involved. Again, his estimate was reasonable given the scope of the project so we gave him the job. Other than a little bit of miscommunication from his glass supplier, the project went well. His crew is extremely meticulous and details oriented. I am very picky myself and can tell you his workers are perfectionists. The shower came out amazingly beautiful and now a little over a year later, the it still looks great and is leak free. I posted a picture of it here to highlight how big and beautiful a project this was. We have since recommended Simmons glass to friends of ours who wanted an interior stairway glass railing done and they also loved the finished work. Thank you Skip and crew! read more

I hired Simmons Glass to replace one window. The price seemed very competitive but I found out later why. After destroying my trim bead around the window Skip indicated he would find a replacement but never did. After I had to make repeated calls, I never heard back from Simmons Glass. While they replaced the window I don't have any protection (glazing bead) around the window, leaving it exposed to the elements. Simmons Glass was very unprofessional on how they handled this small job. Anytime you see reviews that are really bad and really good it tells you that one end of the spectrum are fake - you can decide which is real. read more

Update: we did indeed have Simmons Glass return to have made for us and to install a beautiful, custom glass shower door and glass cabinet doors that we wanted with a very specific degree of opacity and color. Skip and Baskum returned to the scene with the same professionalism, class, and downright good-guy-ed-ness as before and, again, did a remarkable job for a very fair price. Knowing that Skip inadvertently underbid me on my previous mirror project but refused to accept additional payment for that, I tried to get him to charge me more for this project, but he would not, despite my repeated attempts. They're back now to make an install a new beveled mirror for us and I was so happy to see them again. Not often you feel that way about a contractor...or maybe even a family member! :) read more

They were more thorough and less expensive than the other companies I called. The mirror looks great. I called Simmons Glass after a terrible experience with Island Glass (Island Glass basically stood me up; they never showed up for our appointment). I needed to replace the broken glass on a bedroom window. I spoke to Skip from Simmons Glass on Wednesday. He asked me a few questions about the glass (including measurements) and estimated that it would cost anywhere from $120-$150, though he couldn't confirm the exact price until he saw it. I agreed that he replace it and we scheduled an appointment for the following day at 9:30am. Here's how I would assess their work: -Customer Service (Excellent): Skip called me before heading over as he had agreed to and showed up on time at my home. He was friendly and informative and so was his coworker. -Craftsmanship (Excellent): The work was taken care of quickly and with attention to detail. They replaced the glass and made sure to clean it as well as the lower part of the frame, leaving no residue of any kind behind. The quality of the glass itself seems great (though I'm no expert). -Price: It's difficult for me to assess this because I got estimates from only a few other places. In the end, Skip charged $145, which is on the higher end of the range he gave me over the phone. A few other places, which have been considered pricey by other yelp reviewers (for example, Jimenez Glass), gave me estimates of about $150. If $150 is in fact on the higher end of what is usually charged for this type of work, then Simmons is pricey. This is the only reason why I give them four stars instead of five. In sum, Simmons Glass offers excellent customer service and craftsmanship. While they may be a little on the pricey side, I would hire them again any day. read more

John is very friendly and professional. He replaced a large (about 8ft wide by 5ft tall) cracked mirror very well. The old mirror was carefully removed from the bathroom wall, without further cracking and without dropping any glass. The new mirror went in without a hitch. John made sure it lined well with the walls and finished the edges very cleanly. John then cleaned up the workspace very well and was on his way. Beyond amazing! Skip and his crew are super polite and professional; exceeded my expectations more than I could have expected. New to Oakland, and relying on fellow Yelpers, I took a chance. As other Yelpers, I wish I could give Simmons Glass more stars than five. Skip skillfully--and carefully--removed 50-year old textured sidelight glass from my home and is warehousing it for future projects. The care given the project was as if my home were his home.
