I came across Simply Cake because my father-in-law requested a tiramisu cake for his birthday, and this bakery happened to be conveniently located near an appointment I had that day. I'm so glad I stopped by, as this place did not disappoint! I called on a Sunday to reserve their 6" tiramisu cake (huge win that they offer the 6" option, which not every bakery does, and it's the perfect size for our family). It was a little tricky getting a hold of someone on the phone to confirm everything, but once I did, they took my order and scheduled the pickup for Tuesday at 2:30 PM. I arrived a little early, and thankfully, my cake was ready to go. While I was there, I couldn't help but notice how tempting all the pastries looked. I asked if they could keep the cake safe while I browsed, and they were super accommodating and held it behind the counter for me. Naturally, I ended up grabbing way more than I planned: cream puffs, a ham sandwich, a hot dog cheese bun, BBQ sausage skewers, a purple yam bun, and a pineapple overload bun. I meant to bring them all home for my family, but I shamelessly ate three of them on the drive back. Everything I tried was tasty and fresh. Also, small but hilarious detail... while I was browsing, three separate groups of people tried to walk off with my cake. One guy was hours early for his pickup time and confidently claimed the cake as his. The other two groups hadn't preordered and just assumed it was available. The sliced cake display is in the middle but you order via the cashier. Love the variety of bread, so creative and carrying an element of Japanese baking with light cheese, milk and yogurt. Okay, I have ordered 2 cakes here for two separate occasions. They were not bad and good. However, I ordered pork sung bread (uncut) and wifey pastry. when I got home to cut the bread, it was not fresh at all. When I tried a piece of, the bread tasted sour and I up up throwing it away. The wifey pastry (pack of 4) was also not fresh. It seems like it's been out for days and no one had bought it. The cakes are good but the pastry that is sealed needs to be looked at. Another yummy spot in San Mateo. We came here on a Saturday and the line tended to fluctuate a lot. It was busy in pockets mostly because the line moved quickly. They have a great selection of breads, sweets, buns, tarts, and cake. My favorite was the pillowy milk bread - it was soooo soft and lightly sweet. I recently had a very unpleasant experience at the bakery. Normally, I wouldn't write a review unless the service was either amazing or terrible, and unfortunately, this was the latter. I have been a customer of this bakery for the past few years, even before the pandemic. It used to be one of my favorite places, but that has changed. During my last visit, I had three items to check out at the cashier. I requested a larger paper bag (which I was willing to pay for) because I needed extra space to store some things for my little one, and my purse was too small. The cashier questioned me as if I were at customs, asking, "Why do you need a bigger bag?" I explained my situation, and he replied, "Why? We only offer bags that fit the right amount of items!" I was taken aback by his accusatory tone, especially since I just wanted to have my hands free to manage all the random things from my child. I responded, "It's for my kid's stuff! I just need some extra space to put those things when I have the larger bag. I've been here many times, and the staff usually provides it without any questions." The cashier then said, with a sarcastic attitude, "We normally won't give out larger bags unless it's requested. And I am giving you one now!!!" What an attitude! Super poor customer service. I'd suggest the store to invest more in cashier training. I was about to use my points to redeem items coz I'm a regular. During checkout the cashier didn't ask me for my phone number or ask if I needed a receipt. I asked him where I can see my points and told him that my experience was different last time. Simply Cake is probably one of my favorite Asian bakeries that I've been to in the bay. The prices are lower compared to Paris Baguette, and about the same as 85C. Because it was Mother's Day, the place was very busy with a checkout line out the door. This is clearly not a common occurrence, but I think they could have managed it better by separating out cake orders in a different line. I ended up waiting 15 minutes to check out. They were doing a good job restocking items as fast as possible, although many items were still sold out. I came hoping to try a slice of their tiramisu. Unfortunately, they had no tiramisu in their cake window, so I tried the next best thing: their chocolate cake with chocolate whipped cream. Based on my experience visiting Simply Cake with my friend, I would say that it is slightly more elevated than 85 Degree, Paris Baguette, and Sheng Kee combined. I feel that while all three competitor bakeshops are known for consistency, some of their cakes taste too artificial for me. The last time, in fact, that I visited Paris Baguette for a mocha cake slice, I was sorely disappointed by the lack of whipped cream. Simply Cake was even better, though I wish they had all cakes available for purchase (as listed on their website). I loved how airy their chocolate cake was, because I was definitely in the mood for something light. I also had a bite of my friend's matcha mousse cake, and that slice tasted equally as delicious. From previous reviews complaining about issues with whole cake deliveries, I'm not sure I can vouch for that, since I have yet to order a whole cake from Simply Cake.
