General Tao's Children

First time trying this place. I first have to say I'm jaded by authentic Vietnamese cuisine and this, though owners are Vietnamese and their recipes the cooks are not. Yes it does make a difference. The Thai tea was watered down and had no flavor, bland. The Vietnamese egg rolls were ok, not great and not as crispy as traditional rice paper egg rolls. You get 2 thinly rolled egg rolls as appetizer with a large lettuce leaf, missing the cilantro. The pork though it taste good it lacks the true spices that's it's usually grilled with. It came with lettuce carrots cucumber and bean sprouts. The fish sauce was a little too vinegar but add hot sauce it was better. I can't review the general Tao dish because I didn't try it. My husband however liked it and took home his leftovers. I would try it again when in the area but not go out of my way as I do to go to San Marcos for pho. Staff was pleasant enough but very rushed. We like the casual atmosphere with tv playing sports over the nice bar. Look like a full bar menu. Prices are higher than you'd expect to pay but you are in Belterra.

Best Bahn Mi outside the city. I crave those sandwiches. Staff is polity & friendly. Bright interior with lots of plants. Just a great place to hang out, sip a beer, and enjoy some good food.

I'm so sad that the service here was this horrible. There were 6 workers and 7 parties dining in. I could see they were getting a lot of take out orders too but goodness. This was pretty bad. I came at 4pm on a Sunday, when one would expect great and attentive service.. I had 4 in my party. We ordered 2 appetizers, 2 order of spring rolls and 1 order of Thai chicken wings. These came out relatively slow. But we were long done with these and no one had taken our main order. After flagging down someone, we ordered 2 combination pho, 1 pork banh mi, and 1 salt and pepper squid entree. Nothing was written down. One of the 2 phos came out 10 minutes before anything else, then a shrimp dish (that no one ordered) the banh mi, and then another bowl of pho. The squid plate came out last, the vegetables were very well cut and presented by the portion and size of squid pieces were underwhelming. The pho was good but there were no herb/veggie plate to accompany it. After asking for some, a very sad plate came out that looked half eaten/unused by another person. I was very sadden by this experience bc I love Vietnamese food and this location is so close to us. I hope they are able to hire more help/train their current staff better... Our meals cost a total of $65.

My husband ordered take out tonight including the ribeye pho. He got home, opened the container and the beef was raw. Not just rare .... actually RAW. The bag of vegetable toppings did not look fresh either .

Update to my review: This restaurant has stepped up and repaired all of the things that affected our experience last time. Our server, Michael G was very attentive and the food came out very quickly and was as good as we remembered. We had the beef pho (p2) and chicken pho, and cream cheese wontons. With the experience improved, I would definitely recommend this restaurant once again.

Took my friend who was born and raised in Vietnam and he was surprised by the flavor of the pho broth and enjoys the pork vermicelli regularly. Can't go wrong with the food here, pho is perfect for the cold weather. Friendly service, ample portions and overal a good variety of pan-Asian flavors/dishes

I ordered a Bahn Mi sandwich and the bread was awful. And it wasn't authentic. Honestly, it's the worst Vietnamese food I've ever had. Sad!

Time to Order: 5 minutes for appetizers, 12 minutes for dumplings and soups Crab and Pork Soup Dumplings: 5/5 still fantastic Black Fungus with Onions: Nice and light, like a little salad with pickled vegetables. Nice and crispy. The good old Hot Spicy Stew #25: 5/5 still incredibly filling and they're so generous with meats! I keep forgetting to ask for swapping the glass noodles with their regular hand pulled noodles, would do that. Friends had other noodle soups and enjoyed them all, as I thought. Julie's is still probably one of the best noodle shops in Austin. Amazing value, amazing service.

As i left EBISU, Julie's was across the parking lot so i finally went. Only the big table was available so i sat and a nice young couple sat with me and ordered so much stuff that they shared and i got to try the dumplings, scallion pancakes, and the chicken chow mien which i had ordered for myself. The food was was pretty good! I was overwhelmed with options and picked the Stewed Chicken Chow Mein which I enjoyed but next time will get something a bit spicier. Like I said the couple sitting with me shared a pork dumpling and and some scallion pancakes with me and were both really delicious and when I go back again I'll likely get them. The staff is really nice and the woman at the counter was sweet and asked permission to put other customers at the large table I was sitting at. Which I was happy to do especially since I was eating alone. I did feel sick the rest of the day so I knocked off a point. Hopefully it's just that my stomach doesn't digest noodles fast enough and next time I'll try dumplings or a rice dish.

The…read moreThai basil leaves were absolutely ginormous, and they gave us plenty of them alongside very fresh limes, which I appreciated. The bowl itself came loaded with meat--they definitely weren't skimping to save money here. The meat-to-noodle ratio felt great, and every bite actually had substance instead of leaving me fishing around for toppings. As for the broth, I landed somewhere in the middle. It wasn't quite as clear or light as I personally prefer, leaning toward a fattier, milkier undertone that almost reminded me of a Vietnamese pho take on tonkotsu. The flavor itself was undeniably very good, but the richness may have been a bit too much for me personally. One way I usually judge how much I love a pho broth is whether I want to sip the bowl down to the very end, and this one wasn't quite light enough for me to want to do that. I've had richer and deeper pho flavors elsewhere, but I still appreciated the flavor profile here and could absolutely see why this place is so popular. It feels hearty, comforting, and satisfying in a way that clearly resonates with many people. Despite how packed the restaurant was, the atmosphere ended up being surprisingly pleasant. Service moved very quickly, which honestly impressed me given how busy everything felt. Even with the crowd, I didn't dislike the spacing or setup at all--the restaurant still felt comfortable, and the sound of people enjoying their food all around added to the lively, welcoming energy rather than making it feel overwhelming. Overall, Pho Phong Lưu ended up being one of those places where I completely understood the hype, even if it didn't become my personal favorite pho spot. While the broth leaned richer than my preference, I still enjoyed the experience and definitely look forward to trying other dishes next time.

I ordered hot and sour pork soup. I had never had hot and sour soup with meat. Portions were generous, ingredients fresh, and the food arrived smoking hot. The noodles were soft, smooth and flavorful. The pork inside looked like tiny meatballs. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the restaurant was completely full and customers were continuing to flow in. Because the restaurant is rather small, I had to wait about 20 minutes for my order. Jim, one of the owners, said if I had ordered 3 items it would take about 45 minutes, that's why I went with one. You could easily tell that many folks at the restaurant were regulars, which means the food, service or both were exceptional. Definitely will be returning to Three Gorges...

Family…read morestyle, big portions at a good price point. - Cumin Lamb: A heaping pile of thinly sliced lamb that is tender mixed in with cumin seeds, sichuan peppercorns, fresh cilantro, and red chilis. The cumin seeds give it that signature earthy, aromatic flavor and you get a slight tingly numbing spice sensation from the chilis and peppercorn. The lamb is not overly gamey, but it still does taste like lamb so if you are not really a lamb fan, I'd choose something else. - Jumping Fish: A very popular dish! Tender white fish fillets that is so soft it melts in your mouth. It is in a flavorful oil and broth that is refreshing from the fresh jalapenos. It is a savory dish, yet still relatively mild. It commes with napa cabbage as well! This was my favorite dish and I loved the flavor combined with the white rice. - Mapo Tofu (Vegetarian): They have one with pork as well, but I got the vegetarian version. Silky soft tofu cubes in that signature mapo tofu sauce and numbing peppercorns. Despite the appearance of all the dishes, none of them were very spicy. Overall, a comforting soft, spicy, savory dish with a slight tingle. - Eggplant in garlic sauce: A deliciously sweet and umami garlic sauce. The eggplants could have been a bit more cooked through in my opinion though since it was still quite firm. I loved it still! Note that all the dishes to me were not spicy just had an underlying subtle spice or tingle (like a finishing flavor note if you will). Also, since it is sichuan the dishes are on the oilier side. You order with the cashier at the front and pay up front as well. Food comes out quickly. It is a small space with three rows of tables (maybe around 12-15 tables give or take), so it does fill up fast. I went at around 5:40 PM on a Thursday and there was no wait, but by the time we finished eating at around 7PM, the restaurant was full. House of Three Gorges was hyped up a lot on my social media feed and through word of mouth, so I came in with high expectations. Luckily, they did not disappoint.
