Not a Safe Space for Gender-Diverse Patients!…read more As a non-binary person living in Kern County, being misgendered is a distressing and painful experience that I already face far too often. A medical provider's office should be a Safe Space--especially for patients who trust their provider with their health and well-being. Unfortunately, that was not my experience with Leslie Figge, NP. Leslie has been my provider for about eight months. During a recent physical, instead of respectfully asking about my behaviors or needs, she awkwardly asked, "Do them do ___?" While this may have been an attempt at inclusivity, it highlights a deeper issue: neither Leslie nor her office staff have taken the time to properly educate themselves about pronouns or the healthcare needs of non-binary patients. Inclusive care isn't hard--it starts with asking, listening, and learning. After eight months of regular visits, the continued misgendering and lack of awareness felt dismissive, ignorant, and uncaring. Because of this experience, "they are finding a new provider." I would strongly caution gender- and sexually-diverse patients to be aware that this office is not a safe or affirming environment.

Wait, I'm not good - I'm here because I have concerns. She told me she can't tell me anything about anything going on with me because 1) I'd need to talk to my specialists about any of those things, and 2) it's not in the computer system [until she finally dug around and found it]. When I asked more questions, she just deflected and told me I'm fine. How is this medical care? The janitor could do a better job at providing health care. As if I didn't already understand the condescension and lack of caring, concern, and competence from the doctor - apparently I needed to hear it all over again from the nurse. I've been misdiagnosed (blown off as if my concern is no big deal, when actually it ended up being a huge deal). I've complained to Kaiser. This location should be closed, and the doctors fired. I've been to plenty of bad doctors in my life, but this Kaiser location takes the cake. They have no shame.
