I was in today to have two tree clippers sharpened. They did it about 20 minutes & charged $20. I thought that was fair. This is my original review: I've been there 3 times. 1) I brought in my old lawn mower. They said it needed a transmission & it wasn't worth repairing. I had them take the old transmission out, I use it as a push mower with powered cutting blades. 2) I brought in a chain saw. They sharpened & adjusted it for $17. I thought that was a good price. 3) Yesterday I returned the same saw. The chain was dull again. My fault. I told them what I was doing. The gal recommended a better quality chain. They replaced the chain & adjusted something. I waited 15-20 minutes & paid $50+. It seemed fair. read more

Single cylinder repair "SPIES" on their customers and just lost a $500 sale. let me start by saying I'm a black man. I was the only customer in the store at that time. I've done business on several occasions with no problems , this time I went there to buy a leaf blower , the leaf blowers are in the back of the store. Brought in an almost new Echo chainsaw, bar sprocket locked (defective). They replaced chain and bar for 80$ (new price of this is 39$). They didn't try to warranty. Purchased at Home Depot, who were going to just return it and give me another. After complaint, they warrantied bar. Took me multiple trips. They threw away my chain, which I wanted either way. A wide inventory of parts for Briggs/Honda/Kawasaki motors and a decent lineup of higher-end power equipment - not the throw-away crap found at Home Depot or Wal-Mart. Their prices are almost the same as a few online vendors - I've been coming in for parts to get a old Briggs powered roto-tiller to run. Unlike the rednecks at another place in Rodeo, these guys have been helpful for me and their inventory is fresh - not NOS. read more

Here is the story On a Tuesday I discovered that the two 1000K generators we ordered for an event would not arrive on time for a Friday event On a Wednesday, I called and spoke with Trang about my need to rent two small 1000w generators for an event I was hosting on Friday. He said that he had the items in stock. I offered a credit card to pay and hold them. Trang said - no need to, he had plenty of them in stock. On Friday - they day of the event, spoke with Trang. He did not have the two generators in stock and had to call around. He found a supplier that wanted 2X the value of each generator as a deposit. The value of at 1000W generator to purchase is 250 dollars, and the deposit of one generator wanted was $800 dollars each. ( That would have been $1600 bucks for two generators not including the rental fee and taxes. Frustrated as Hell. - I went to Cresco Xpress in Montclair. They took care of me and the event was super. A couple of times they've told me stuff that I didn't agree with, so I figure out why. They've been right each time. Also good on price. I buy my equipment there now though Home Depot sometimes has stuff on sale a bit cheaper. I buy from these guys, they handle it. We know what HD does. Ain't worth it. read more

These guys... they're busy and the go to place for repair on landscaping equipment so I took my basic weed eater to them they said they'd call in a day or two, I never got a call so I went by. The trimmer was ready, so I payed them $93 ($35 deposit and $48 on completion) all good. When I asked what they did they told me they changed the plug and a gas line. I got it home and it won't start. These guys not only overcharged me but didn't fix my weedeater. I'm bummed. I feel like they got over on me. I have been going to Trung's Single Cylinder Engine Repair shortly after he opened his shop in 1999. I have never had a problem with any of their work. They have worked on my 8hp Troybilt rototiller, Stihl chain saw, Echo weedwacker, Still gas powered hedge trimmer, plus 5 lawnmowers that I have at rental properties and I have been so pleased with his employees. I recently had Single Cylinder Repair service my old chainsaws. It's been 30+ years since I retired from this sort of work and last used them, so not only am I old, but they are too! The counter persons were efficient and professional. After getting the saws back, I began a job of trimming and felling a number of trees that overhang my house but the saws didn't start and run easily. Not sure if it was me or the equipment that was out of shape, and feeling very frustrated, I took them back to have them checked out. It was the end of the day and looked like they were about to close and I asked if someone could look them over and give me a bit of coaching. One of the employees, Diep, immediately offered to help, spotting some silly errors on my part, making some minor adjustments and walking me through the best procedures. I had a chipper and shredder that stopped in the middle of running. that is generally is not a fuel supply problem if it stopped suddenly. While I had this issue I thought I'd bring my small chainsaw there as well I called up after a $70 bill to check them out and they said both carburetors were bad and the wheel was off. They wanted $250 to replace (why not rebuild) the carburetor on the chipper. Something seemed off. I could buy a decent carb online for 30 to $50 and it's a 10-minute job on a 1 cylinder engine.they said the chainsaw will cost $150 a pair and was not worth it. I decided to come back and pick it up as I could buy a cheap carb and not being a mechanic can install one very quickly as there's nothing to it. When I got it I asked them to re-inflate the tire as it did not come there with it off and they said they didn't know how to re-inflate it unless I pay them $25 per tire to put a tube in it and inflate it. That's more than I pay for a giant car tire in a shop. I took it home used a strap to pressurize the tire and inflated it immediately. $50 saved. How come they didn't know how to do that? I then noticed the fuel line was on the off position for the fuel supply turned it on and crank over the engine after putting more gas in it and it started right up! it runs perfectly so clearly they didn't even check it and we're just going to charge me to put a new carburetor in without even giving any attention as a mechanic to see if they could fix the problem. It is a very clean neat and well organized business. they are there for one purpose only to make as much money in the shortest time possible. I'm sure I'll be able to fix my chainsaw with a $12 peace as well. I will now at least take a look at it since clearly they didn't. The reason they don't have one star is their kids were nice. And they were polite. However that is despicable business practices to not even check the machine that actually ended up running perfectly without needing a new carb. Happy to pay the money and if I'm not it's fair to at least charge what you like for it if it's something that's needed. I have to agree with the other one star reviews unfortunately read more

Well, I formerly liked this business, and bought my gas leaf blower from them. However, my 3-year old blower overheated and stopped running the other day, and I was afraid that I might not have remembered to put the oil in and killed it, so I took it to them for service. I did mention that I might've forgotten to put the oil in. I am a blonde older woman. Unfortunately, I think that has a lot to do with the service I got. I got a call from them saying that my blower was history. That it would either cost $175 to repair, or I should just buy a new one. When I picked it up, they asked for a $30 check up fee, and suggested that I must have run it out of oil, because the pistons were channeled. I agreed to pay $20 for the check up fee. Unfortunately, at this point I think they really didn't open it up to check it at all, so I shouldn't have even paid that. I have a handy boyfriend, so I brought it to him instead. He was able to get it running by just yanking on the pull cord many many times, and he thinks that probably it had just gotten overheated and airlocked. Yesterday, I used the blower very heavy duty job, for 45 minutes, and it worked just fine. The really sad part is that, if I had paid for a new blower & let them keep my old blower, they could have sold it pretty much as is, as a reconditioned blower. And messed me over twice. Luckily, I'm not stupid. As most blonde women aren't! Note: a month later, the blower's still working just fine! read more

Brought in my mower had no clue what was wrong with it and right away Troung the owner knew what was wrong and so i left it there for couple days and when i got it back it worked like brand new. And prices were really inexpensive i even purchased a new echo chainsaw from them at a great price. Overall great service, very knowlegable people, and great prices. read more

Hard to believe it is the same place when others say the service is not so great. Yes, english is a second language here, but they certainly try to help you out. Yes, they are a business, and I'm sure they would like to sell equipment too, and they carry all the good brands, but they service it well. I've been going here for 10 years or so, and they treat me well, try to get the the next customer, (yes they get crowded) and all in all, can't think of a place I'd rather take the gas machines, (I've got about a dozen that I bring here). They may not be the cheapest, but the machines RUN well afterwards. I've got an old Stihl weedeater that the original Stihl dealer could never keep running. I changed and started bringing it here before they were a dealer. It is probably 30 years old now and still runs great. paul read more

Wow. Stay away from these creeps. I called the shop to see if they would show me how to properly start the chainsaw I inherited from my dad. It was stored correctly with all fluids drained and kept in a clean dry place. Anyway, the owner told me over the phone that he'd show me how to start it. I thought "great! What nice service!" So I drove (from Oakland) to the shop and waited at the counter for the guy (owner?) to get to me. There were no other customers in the place. I waited ten minutes or so and a customer came in used the bathroom and was bumped ahead of me. Hmmph. Pretty rude but maybe there was an excuse. Finally a guy from the back gets to me and wants me to leave the saw for a couple of days. I told him I just wanted to get a tutorial on starting the saw which seemed to irritate him. I offered to pay for the 10 or 15 minutes of time this might take and he then told me the saw was not going to work. He hadn't touched the saw yet so I asked what was so obviously wrong with it that he could diagnose it so quickly. He then grabbed the saw, dumped a cupful of gas/oil mix into it and yanked away at the pull rope until it was flooded. Gas dripping out of the sparkplug hole. He said "see I told you. Look it's leaking fuel." I said it seemed to be flooded and asked if he had a plug wrench. He said there was no point since the plug probably wouldn't come out anyway. Odd response because he then tried to sell me a replacement plug. He then said "Maybe you want to buy a new saw." they have nice saws there (all around $400) but I already have a saw and I don't think it is junk. The main part of my beef with this place is that they have crappy, offhanded customer service, and worse they are crappy at diagnostics. I did not witness good diagnostic procedure at any point in my dealing with them. I also had the feeling that they were trying to push me into buying something I didn't need. Maybe I'll just check out a saw from the tool lending library in the Temescal instead. read more

A Clean, Well Lighted Place for Superior Powered Garden Tools. I had them repair a machine for me years ago and the experience left me with a very positive impression, so when I needed to spend some serious money on a chipper shredder I went to their new location. It is dense with wondrous machines and tools. Hanging from the ceiling were a couple of the longest chain saws I have ever seen! I tried to imagine them dancing like a Calder mobile ... But I digress. I wound up buying a powerful new machine, and since I lived nearby, Trung, the owner, agreed to deliver - (applause here for superior customer service) a godsend as it was far more machine than would fit in my hatchback! As others have noted, communication is shall we say, very, very low key; you might think you are being ignored (maybe this is a cultural thing) but stay the course and you will be rewarded with intelligent answers to your questions. read more
