Great little hole-in-wall spot for tasty treats. We stopped by on a Coronavirus Saturday afternoon, and they were still taking orders in the store. We had the vegetarian "burger" and the pork burger. These are not actual burgers, but buns filled with the same stuffing as the dumplings. Tables outside provided a place to eat while they were hot. The food was quite tasty, and the soy sauce was amazingly flavorful. There are many varieties to choose from in the large freezer, as well as a chalkboard full of current offerings for hot to-go orders. Next time, we'll bring some drinks to go with them and try an order of dumplings. While we were eating, Sister Liu (pronounced "loo" like in Louise) came out and a bunch of us chatted together. She and her family moved here from Albania several decades ago, and she really likes the area. Sure she misses the high mountains and her extended family, but she likes it here, so we'll have these tasty treats for a while yet! read more

All of which you can get with beef, pork, chicken. A few of the dumplings will have shrimp or tofu as an option. This is a small operation so service is okay to good. You can not enter the store anymore so you can order by phone or online or in person. If you order by phone or online there is a phone number to call for service to come to your vehicle. Excited to try it based on reviews. Started off on the wrong foot. You have to order online or at a kiosk. Ordered online, showed up when order was "ready", then waited 20 minutes for them to "find" the order, only to then be told they would finally start to prepare it. Checked on status of order after another 20 minutes, finally speaking with the owner, who was very polite. She said they had not started it and would finally prepare my order. 75 minutes after ordering, we finally had our food. Owner is very nice and polite and apologized for the delay. I finally had a chance to stop by for lunch at Sister Liu Kitchen. Talk about a "hidden" gem! It's literally hidden in a bamboo forest. Not really but it was a journey to get there. Don't let the GPS fool you because it will. I arrived right before the lunch rush. The shop is super tiny with outdoor seating and indoor seating a few doors down. I didn't know about this until one the workers told me. The person at the register was helpful and immediately explained the tiny menu. I ordered the following for two... Pork shrimp egg dumplings: The wrapper had a great texture, the filling was a perfect blend of flavors to compliment the dipping sauces. Spinach noodles with beef/mushroom: This was bursting with flavors. The texture of the noodles made me want to eat more. The beef/mushroom was flavorful as well. Burger: This was super unique. So my son needed to eat dumplings for Chinese New Year. It was a homework assignment. So glad for Sister Liu's. My son wanted tofu and so one small side trip to Durham and we were in business. We tried tofu and mushroom dumplings and the beef cilantro. I opted for frozen ones as I knew it would be a minute before we got home. They held up well in the freezerr and were easy to cook. We tried the spicy and regular dumpling sauce. We love spice, but the regular had a great overall taste. read more

I've been so excited to try this place and I'm so glad I got the opportunity to because I was NOT disappointed. I've never had authentic Chinese dumplings before, but these have definitely set the bar for me. We ordered the pork and chives dumplings with the spicy beef noodles. All were reasonably priced and the people working were super sweet! I think splitting those two dishes between two people was enough food to get us to a good full. Definitely get the spicy sauce for the dumplings (... I didn't think it was spicy) and mix up your spicy beef noodles super well to spread out all of the flavors evenly. Bring your own water bottle because they only have bottled water for sale! If you're going on the weekend, just keep in mind that the wait will be a bit long for the food, but hey, it's fresh. FYI, parking is a bit of a hassle on the weekends, but just park towards the back and walk on up to the front to find the restaurant. Atmosphere: We didn't get a sense of the atmosphere because our order was for pickup due to COVID restrictions. We hope to come back and dine in soon! We've also tried food from Sister Liu's food trucks at various events around Durham. Service: It took around 25 minutes from the online order to pickup! The system is very easy and intuitive, and we had no problems with our food. Food: We ordered the pork burger, the chicken cilantro dumplings, and the rice noodle with pork. The pork burger was a bit salty but had a rich flavor. We weren't as impressed with the chicken cilantro dumplings -- the flavor was there but muted. However, this may have been because the dumplings weren't hot and fresh from being in a to-go container. The stand out dish was the rice noodles! They held up well in the to-go containers, and the pork was flavorful. Overall: Sister Liu's may be most well-known for their dumplings, but the burger and noodles were a pleasant surprise. I've been a regular at Sister Liu's even before the physical location opened. Back in the day, she would deliver food to college campuses in the area every Wednesday and I'd always look forward to her handmade dumplings, Chinese burgers, and spicy pork ears :) I'm surprised at how the quality has NOT deteriorated since she scaled up and opened a physical restaurant - although the prices certainly have gone up over the years. My favorites are the spicy cumin lamb / beef burger, and the classic pork dumplings. It is expensive but you are paying for the labor of handmade from scratch food - so it makes sense that it's pricier than what you find in the frozen aisle of a grocery store. This hole in the wall place has minimal street side parking and I believe indoor seating is unavailable given the times, but it doesn't stop me from visiting to satiate my craving every so often. My wife and I really like Sister Liu's Kitchen. So far, this has been one of our favorite Asian restaurants in the Triangle. It's become a go-to for us. We recommend it to friends, family, and coworkers. I love their Chinese hamburgers, also known as "rou jia mo" in Chinese. They're pretty much perfect (or close to it). According to the restaurant, "everything" is "handmade." For a business that specializes in dumplings and buns, this is an important distinction. It's a difference you can taste, both in the consistency of the dough and in the fillings. These taste different (better) than mass-produced, machine-made dumplings and buns that you might typically find in the frozen food section at the grocery store. At the time of writing this review, I've had both the Spicy Pork Burger ($7.45) and the Spicy Cumin Lamb Burger ($8.45). Both were excellent. I like the Spicy Cumin Lamb Burger better (personal preference), but the Spicy Pork Burger is outstanding as well. Sister Liu's gets everything right with their burgers, from the delectable, golden-brown buns on the outside to the savory, flavor-packed meat fillings on the inside. What's interesting is how they're able to pack each sandwich with a generous, well-balanced mix of meat, seasonings, and other ingredients (e.g. cilantro) into a relatively tiny opening. In this sense, these burgers are more like pockets. The dough for the burgers is the same type of dough that is used for Chinese steamed buns. The difference here is the dough is pan-fried which is what gives them their golden brown color and crispy, yummy exterior. The buns are springy and appetizingly chewy too. The Spicy Cumin Lamb Burger just hits you with flavor. It's very (or wholly) Sichuan in style. The lamb I had was lean and had zero gamey flavor. The only thing that would make it better for me is the addition of Sichuan peppercorns. I love hot and numbing Sichuan food and the numbing effect of those peppercorns was the only ingredient "missing" for me (I also love spicy food so I realize this idea probably wouldn't work for most, especially in the Triangle). In contrast, the pork in the Spicy Pork Burger contains more fat content than the lamb. Therefore, the pork is more tender. Like the lamb, it's flavorful. Between the two, the Lamb Burger is spicier than the Pork Burger. One last thought on Sister Liu's burgers - because they're pockets, there is no spillage of fillings when you take bites from the open end. And because there is no spillage of fillings, the last bites of each burger can end up being extra rich because the sauce has soaked into the last part of the bun by the end. Sister Liu's offers over 20 kinds of dumplings. You can buy them either cooked or frozen. We've done both. I think frozen is generally the way to go, but cooked is a good option too. For example, a one-pound bag of Pork Mushroom dumplings costs $15.00 (about 23 dumplings or about $0.65 per dumpling). Cooked, you can get Pork Mushroom dumplings, 10 for $8.95 (about $0.90 per dumpling) or 15 for $13.20 ($0.88 per dumpling). The cooked version does come with sauce (smaller size) while the frozen version does not. If you order frozen, I recommend ordering sauce (larger size, $1.50 each) to go with it. It's evident in the texture of the dumpling skins - soft, but not flimsy - and the fresh, juicy, tasty fillings. We're fans of the spicy sauce which tastes like a combination of soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, and chili and sesame oil. Other dishes from Sister Liu's we've enjoyed include the Warm Rice Noodle with Meat ($9.95) and the Spicy Pig Ear ($10.95). The "Meat" in the noodle dish is ground pork. The noodles are smooth, slippery, and delicate. Other ingredients include cilantro, chive, carrot, peanuts, and leafy greens. My wife likes the noodles more than me. I think they're good, but not great, and could use a bit more flavor. I'm a big fan of the Spicy Pig Ear. This is a cold dish featuring thinly-sliced, collagen-rich, crunchy, braised pig ears in chili oil. Service has been consistently efficient. This is the original location of Sister Liu's Kitchen. It opened in November 2018 in the Straw Valley shopping center just off I-40 exit 270. I wanted to try this place because of the rave reviews and I wanted my Chinese food fix. I ordered the spicy beef noodle dish because of other yelpers photos. It looked filling and came with fresh bok choy as well. What I got was not what other posted in the past. My entree had a very small portion of ground meat (the pictured item had easily 4 times the amount of meat) there was also no bok choy instead I got shredded lettuce that looked like it was from Taco Bell. Lastly the noodles that were the base of the dish were extremely soft as if they were over cooked. For a price tag of $17 for the entree I was definitely disappointed. I won't be back unfortunately. I assume they are handmade dumplings using amazing ingredients, but at a certain point, charging $10 for 9 dumplings feels almost like a scam. At Hmart or any asian food market you can get a bag of 25 frozen dumplings for $5. Even if the quality is worse, is it 2 or 3 times worse? I don't think so. I personally like buying them frozen so I can take them home and decide whether I want to boil, steam or fry them depending on what I'm feeling. The dumplings are a little pricy at $15/lb (approximately 22-24 dumplings) but they are fresh and hand made and just delicious. This past weekend for Chinese New Years, they had a surprise rush of customers and that led to a long wait Friday night for orders. The next day they sent out an apology email with a coupon code and promised to make sure this wouldn't happen again. Holy dumpling did we hit the jackpot when we stumbled upon this little treasure in Durham, NC on our way to OBX. They have a large variety of amazing homemade dumplings that we're mouthwateringly delicious, and also some Asian fusion burgers that were equally yummy. Driving here, I was confused by the the mishmash of cars parked along a gravel road, but there is an adjacent parking lot if there isn't any space to park in front of the store or parallel park. Pork burger -- very tasty and the only even remotely tasty thing we ordered. It was definitely under-filled and there was more bread than filling but at least it was tasty. 2. Noodles with meat and peanuts -- tiny amount of meat and very very little flavor. No way I would ever pay 10 bucks for this one again. 3. Sweet and sour wonton soup -- when I picked it up the 'soup' had already leaked all over the bag. I took it out and closed the container thinking that it was cracked open. When we got home I realized that it was actually seeping from the bottom of the container that was completely saturated. 4. Fried wontons -- fried as hard as a brick. All I tasted was grease. Wanted to try the spinach noodles with spicy beef but when I was placing my order on their outside kiosk, didn't see them as an option. Maybe they ran out. It's Friday at 2:30pm or so. Tonight was my first time trying this restaurant. I have been meaning to give this place a try because I past by this restaurant a couple times a week. I am glad I decided to give sister Liu's a try and I will definitely be back. The set up for placing orders upon arrive is pretty safe and social distance friendly because you order at the kiosk. The menu is not too short and not overly extensive. There are pictures for most of the items, so you can see what you are ordering. However, my one critique is to put a photo of one burger because when I ordered the Chinese spicy beef burger, I thought I was ordering 3 since I saw 3 Chinese spicy beef burgers. It wasn't a big deal though. Now for the food! Where do I start! I order the spicy beef burger and it was absolutely delicious. The spice level was probably a 5/6 for me. The filled was beef and cilantro seasoned with a spices. The bread/bun was a Fried Chinese Bun and I loved the bun. The filling was delicious and packed with flavor. I really loved this item and will definitely order this again. The dumplings I ordered were the pork and chives. The dipping sauce you have to order, but it won't cost you anything if you order one of the hot dumplings like the pork and Chives dumplings. It also helps with reducing the wait times because you can place your order ahead of time for pick up. You can order online on their website. The orders can be placed for as soon as possible (generally about 15 minutes later for pick up) or a future time. Then, once you arrive at the parking lot, text your order number(s) to the phone number they have posted on the door. They will then come out and place your orders in one of the pick-up boxes. I was able to simultaneously pick up multiple orders at once. There were quite a few orders and everything was correct -- nothing was missing. All the orders were labeled intuitively. These dumplings are pretty good. But I personally enjoyed the spicy pork burger more. I used the spicy dumpling dipping sauce and poured a bit on my burger. Delicious! Sister Liu's has been on my list of places to try for quite some time. I was excited to find a place that makes fresh, authentic dumplings in the area. It's pretty much a hole in the wall considering it's a small store front tucked away from the road. We ordered a pound of pork and chive dumplings to go. They're frozen, so we took them home and boiled them per the instructions. They were overall tasty and fresh. I'd recommend eating them with soy sauce or any of of your other favorite sauces. My only complaint is that the food is bit expensive given the amount and size of the dumplings. I will say the ordering process during COVID was a breeze. All we had to do was place the order online and then text the number when we were there. Someone placed the order in a marked cooler, and then we were on the way. I'm unsure if they would've beat the shrimp and pork together to make a mix but I didn't see any shrimp although I ordered the pork,shrimp and cabbage ones. Sister Liu's is truly phenomenal for handmade steamed dumplings, noodles, and very flavorful, spicy "burgers." I believe I've tried all of the dumpling fillings at this point, in part because every time I order, I struggle to remember what I got the last time then order a couple extra to try to cover my bases and perhaps try a new filling. My conclusion from this experiment is that you truly cannot go wrong - I love all of the fillings from the veggies to pork and cabbage, chicken mushroom and chicken cilantro. The prices may initially seem moderate to slightly high for the triangle, but when you factor in that the dumplings are handmade and the terrific quality/taste, they're a great deal. And when you compare them to the fresh dumplings available in Chinatown's of major metropolitan areas, these are as good if not better and more reasonably priced. Their online ordering is easy to navigate, food is prepared swiftly, and if you are too hungry to make it home with your order, there are several picnic tables beside a bunch of bamboo where you can dig in. read more

All of their dumplings (both fresh and frozen) are so delicious! I also love the light brown sauce that they have. I wish it could be made more spicy but even the spicy sauce is not that spicy. The dumplings are so juicy and the dumpling skin is just the right thickness and has amazing chew to it. They used to have spinach noodles with their special beef that was so freaking delicious. They still use the same beef in their burgers but I don't see the spinach noodles anymore. I miss this item intensely haha. One thing they could improve on is speed of ordered items. I've been super excited about this place since I first saw it on Yelp so I was super glad to finally get a chance to go. It's right next to NAMU, which is a great study spot, so super convenient to get food, eat, and then go next door for coffee and studying. My friend and I came on a Saturday late afternoon around 4 PM. I had the shrimp, pork, and cabbage dumplings, as well as a pork belly burger. Our food came out in around 10 minutes, and we went over to a small room they have on the side to eat. The dumplings were great, and I could definitely tell they were homemade. They reminded me of the ones my family makes at home, although they do have slightly less filling. They were slightly pricey though. The pork belly burger was definitely my favorite. It had a very generous amount of filling and was very flavorful. There was also a very good combination of lean/fatty meat and it was definitely my favorite out of the two. My only gripes are that the dumplings are relatively expensive, and that they serve all the food in disposable styrofoam, which I hate.
