I received absolutely appalling care and treatment by Dr. Fan. I had broken a tooth while grinding my teeth in my sleep. I was uninsured and making minimum wage at the time, so the experience of an active dental emergency felt even more stressful than usual when I knew that I could not afford treatment. The HR staff at my job recommended me to Dr. Fan and assured that he would be able to help me; she uses his services herself and she sends everyone she knows to him. When I made it to Dr. Fan's chair, I felt shocked by his unsympathetic and condescending bedside manner. He told me that I had a sizable cavity and that he could either fill the tooth for $75 since he believed it would have enough structural integrity to support a filling, or he could extract it for $65. I told him that I would prefer to fill the tooth if possible and his tone completely shifted. He insisted that I should just have the tooth extracted because it would be cheaper and that filling it isn't actually a viable option. He changed his mind about the structure of my tooth and pushed me to get it extracted so I could get implants later. I told him that I couldn't afford that option, but he pressed that they had financing options for implant packages and that extraction was my best bet. I needed to think about it and he snapped that I had better hurry up because when he came back after seeing his other patients, I had better be mentally prepared to either have my tooth extracted or get out of his chair and stop wasting his time. He spoke so cruelly to me that I broke down and cried in the chair. While he was away, a technician came in to talk to me more about the implant package. She pushed it really hard, kept telling me that extraction isn't so bad, and that she and her coworkers in the office had plenty of extractions and implants installed by Dr. Fan, but nobody on the teamed looked to be over 30 and it made me question whether the extractions Dr. Fan prescribes are truly necessary or rather just a means to sell implant packages. When he returned, he said "It's a miracle! I can fill your tooth after all," and kept warning me that the filling would only hold up for two years, so it's not the best option, but he'd do it for me anyway and that he'll be ready for me again once I have to eventually come back to get it extracted. After he was finished, he said that I should keep in mind that he just did something "really nice," for me and pressured me to leave a 5-star Yelp review to repay his kindness. When I got home, I noticed that the filling was uneven, had gaps that tore up dental floss, and I had a food pocket between my teeth. My understanding is that none of this is normal for a filling. By the time I was insured through Medi-Cal and able to get a second opinion, decay had already set in through the gaps in the original filling and I needed a root canal and crown... but extraction was never medically necessary for that tooth. Overall, my experience with Dr. Fan has left me feeling as though he creates artificial dental problems so he can sell implant packages and bullies good reviews out of his patients. I don't have definitive proof, but I couldn't help but feel like he did a subpar job filling my tooth on purpose so he could make more money off me later. Needless to say, I will never set foot in his office again and I strongly encourage others to look elsewhere for dental care. read more

I've been going to Dr. Fan for years. I've never had any issues until today. I take my kids to him for ortho every 4 weeks. I schedule their appointments around their school schedule. On Mondays they get out of school at 1pm. I purposely schedule them for Mondays at 2pm. Today I show up and I'm told their appointment is for Thursday. They look at me like I'm the one who made the mistake. Why would I schedule them for Thursday at 2pm when they are in school at that time!? Clearly the young lady who scheduled it clicked on the wrong date!! Well unfortunately they refused to see my kids and accommodate their mistake. So I wasted my time off of work and wasted my gas and time for nothing! The young lady who messed up was at the front desk on 10/7 at 2pm which was my last appointment. I'd like to preface my remarks about this dentistry with the following: Dr Fan came highly recommended by my family and I really wanted to like this dental practice, but I have about lost my patience with the run around I've been given. I had my first appointment with them back in January. It was more of an intake type appt (ie exam, X-rays, recommendations, etc...) I gave them my insurance information and was told that I had to pay a $100 deposit for my next two deep cleaning sessions for the purpose of making sure my insurance checks out. I was a little taken aback by this, but went along anyway. LITERALLY 7 mins after I left the office, I received a phone call from them stating that my insurance was invalid and that I needed to pay for my services from today out of pocket. Wait, what?? Why???? The woman informed that if I pay for my services now and that if my insurance confirms to be valid, I would reimbursed for the $140. Reluctantly, I gave her the authorization to run my card that was on file from the $100 deposit. I called my insurance company to see what the discrepancy was. Turns out that I was fully covered and there shouldn't have been an issue. I called them back, explained what happened, and her response to me was, "why did you give her your credit card?" Seriously???? Why don't you do your fucking job correctly?! Fast forward to two months later when I thought I was going to get my deep cleaning done, I get a call 5pm the day before my appt and was informed that my insurance denied my claim. At this point, I'm LIVID. The next morning, I call my insurance company and they informed me that they had requested additional information from Dr. Fan's office before they can authorize the services. This request was sent over a month ago. After learning about this, I called Dr. Fan's the next day and explained to them what I was told. After a few rounds of phone tag, they informed me that the attachment that was sent was not successfully sent and that they would have to restart the claim process since it had already been denied. Fast forward to this morning and I was told yet again, that my services were denied and that they had tried to call me last night, which was a total LIE. When I spoke with their office manager, she said she tried calling last night but didn't leave a message due to the fact that I would want to know why I was denied again and that she did not have an answer for me. Is that really what you say to your patients? How do you run a business this way???? Turns out that the the attachment to the request for additional information did not go through...again. I am thoroughly disappointed with this office. I'm all about supporting Asian owned businesses but this place was an absolute fail; one incident after another. I have been going to this doctor for A while in fact, more than half of my office goes to this dentist. I had some excruciating pain on my top left side of my mouth and because I talk on the phone to customers it affected my job. Not only did I call after hours but I was able to actually speak to Dr. Fan about what was going on I was able to see him right away however I chose to wait until Monday . I got to my appointment late However as soon as I walked in they took me in assess the situation and I ended up having to get a temporary filling. My dentist showed so much compassion so muchis impassion so much concern and he was so gentle withough gentle with my pain he did everything that he needed to do and in a very short time I'm. He even called me to check on me to see how I was feeling I have never had a dentist that has done that . I have been coming to Dr. Fan since Oct. 2009 and could not be happier with his expertise as a dentist. He is very courteous, knowledgeable and thorough. I have a chipped front tooth that has to be refilled in with putty ('bonded') every few years. Dr. Fan does such a stellar job repairing this tooth that you cannot even tell any repair work has been done. Additionally, Dr. Fan was able to figure out the source of my migraine headaches when no M.D. could! During my first visit with him, Dr. Fan took one look at my mouth and asked, "Do you wake-up some mornings with bad headaches?". It turns out he could tell from the wear on certain teeth (and corresponding gum damage) that I clench my jaw during the night/sleep. Every time I go here dr fan jacks my teeth up!! My molars are completely screwed!!! Some are sharp and drilled completely out of shape, I have holes that he didn't fill completely and food gets stuck in it and when I floss my teeth it gets stuck in between my teeth. If I can, I'll give this business a Zero. I had my deep cleaning done in this office early this year. After the service had completed. They sent me a bill of $700 which was supposed to be covered by my insurance. They didn't check my eligibility before giving me the service and then asked me to cover the bill. I told them I had my last deep cleaning done in less than a year on my first visit. They still set up the deep cleaning for me. I thought the eligibility check was done and I got approved. My dual insurance coverage was expiring soon so I wanted to take advantage of getting new retainers since mine were old. I was highly recommended to Dr. Fan by my co-workers and was told pricing is relatively affordable. I came to my appointment a few minutes early as requested to fill out paperwork. After waiting 20 minutes... in the lobby my name was called to be seated. At that point, I waited another 30 minutes in the seat to be seen by Dr. Fan. Dr. Fan inspected my old retainers/my teeth (no more than 3 minutes and he was off to another patient). He told his assistant to make impressions of my teeth to jump start the process and he will send the information to my insurance companies for a quote. After impressions, I was done with my appointment, in total this was a little over a hour long appointment. I had asked the receptionist to call me as soon as possible in regards to the quote/pricing as my insurance coverage was expiring the following next month. The receptionist told me it will take the insurance some time to process for a quote but definitely within the week. A week went by and I received no call. I called in to ask and was told, she will leave a message and call me back when the insurance responds. Two weeks went by, I checked in again and was told that the insurance has not responded. The third week, I called and was told the same exact answer and basically gave up. Until now, months later which I no longer need their service, I have not received a call for my quote. I ended up paying for my retainers at my trusty dentists office. My dentists office was able to give me a quote with a few days, make impressions and have my retainers made in less than a week! read more
