For the food, it was 4 stars and the extra star for the bartender who was also acting a server and also had to go change out a keg but did it all professionally and with a positive attitude. The place was short handed, like everywhere else during this time. This bartender held down the fort. We sat at the bar because the wait for a table was excessive (again due to slower service due to lack of enough servers). My "go-to" quest is to find an excellent Reuben (corned beef) sandwich. The main key is to not let the bottom bread get soggy. Prompt delivery prevented this on the Six Pence Reuben and it was very good. Could've been a little thicker, but flavors and textures were on target. Beer was good too. I really enjoyed the laid back, "pub" atmosphere also. One of our regular eating stops when in Blowing Rock. Always sit at the bar. They've got excellent chips, as in French fries cut like pucks. Usually get a burger and it's never disappointed. Only minus is the scotch egg appetizer is served cold. Bartenders are always nice. Nice beer and wine selection. read more

We're visiting from Florida for ASU graduation- so we didn't know this place was closed for a while. We came at lunch rush hour. The gentleman that was called in to seat all 10 of us was ssssso accommodating he was going to make it happen. So friendly and engaging. Sissy- who waited on us, even though we were at the patio- never once forgot to tend to every need of outs. Sssssso friendly and terrific!!!!! Food was delicious and each order from all 10 of us was done correctly. There was a lot food on the plate. Excellent considering this place just reopened and the locals were surprised it had reopen. We came here three times for a few drinks, while on vacation. The bartenders are friendly, and the drinks were fine. Once we sat inside and the other 2, we sat at the 'bar' against the brick wall in the outside dining area. You don't get wait service there (you had to go inside to get your drinks) but that was fine and not an issue. The food looked good, and it appeared those who ordered food liked what they ordered (I heard a few folks mentioning how good the food was to their waitress). Our issue was the outside area was dirty. There were napkins, straw wrappers and other stuff blowing around. We saw who we assumed was the manager (an older guy who the servers appeared to go to with questions) setting up tables and completely ignoring the garbage on the ground. There was also a large pile of dirty plates that were stacked on the "bar" near us that were there when we arrived, and still there when we left a few hours later. To me that shows cleanliness isn't really important here and nobody on staff is willing to be proactive to do something that might not "be their job". read more

This is an authentic English Pub. In downtown Blowing Rock, it is a must stop. They have a unique loaded fries which was delicious!! The fish and chips were excellent with the just amount of crunch. I gave it 3 stars for old time sake, I haven't been here in probably 10 years so for nostalgia I felt I needed to at least acknowledge the past. The heart of a Pub/Bar is first the bar tender, then the staff, both seemed untrained and unconcerned, service was slow and unimpressive. The food was ok, the cod was frozen, we could tell because it was cold in spots. Typical Americanized English bar menu with burgers, salads, fish and chips, shepherds pie, etc. Place is small on the inside, with a bar section and separate dining section. Outdoor seating available as well. As you would expect, good beer selection, along with a full bar. Nicely pub atmosphere, but kids are welcome since this is a tourist spot. As most places in the downtown area of Blowing Rock, you have to street park or park in a garage. No private parking. The food we sampled was above par. Highly recommend the burgers, French onion soup and Nachos (appetizer). The Nachos can come with chicken or beef. The chips are homemade (flour, not corn tortillas). Highly recommend the nachos as an appetizer. The fish and chips and shepherds pie were good but did not stand out. Overall, recommend this place. read more

It's all in the service. And tonight was not on point. In fact the curly haired beach was beyond rude. We've been several times and never had a problem so it's not the food or the service but just one rotten, rude beach was enough to cause us to leave without ordering. All for a simple request to move from our table to another and she responded with "no, you're table is already dirty and I'm not re-cleaning it." We had jusssst sat down! Probably the best pot roast I've ever had. A wide selection of seasonal draft beers hit the spot with our well rounded late lunch my wife and I grabbed. Out for a snow filled weekend, drove to Blowing Rock to try out an Irish Pub. Great restaurant! Service friendly and fast. Ordered Shepard's pie, fish and chips, and grilled cheese. Shepard's pie was moist and tasty. Served with a lovely side salad. Very fresh looking and crunchy vegetables. Fish and chips was excellent. Fish was very crispy on the outside and juicy and the inside. No fishy taste. The "french fries" which are sliced potatoes were the best. Crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside. Some of the best potatoes I have ever had! My grandson (age 8) commented how good the bacon was that was on the grilled cheese he ordered. I had limited time to have much because I wanted to check out a few more stores on the street before heading back home. I was about to go to bistro roca but decided to come here instead. I'm so glad I did and I'll tell you why in a bit. We weren't too hungry so shared a crabcake. It was really delicious!!!! We also shared the shepherds pie. It was different from what I've had/made. So the beef was spiced well, had carrots and peas and was in a small clay pot( like a soup one ). The mashed potatoes were on the top, with melted cheese. It wasn't the typical shepherds pie but still pretty good. Now this is the best part. I was on the fence about dessert. Our server said it's really good so I was like why not. Boy, I'm so glad I got it!! It was THE BEST bread pudding I've ever had. I admit that I've not had that many but even then it was DELICIOUS!!! I had been coming here for about 10 years, but haven't been since 2011. Finally came back to blowing rock today, 9 years later and I am ecstatic this pub is still here! First place I stopped at! And it's just as I remember it. Food is still phenomenal. Waitress was very friendly, as was the hostess. I ordered the shepherds pie and it was delicious. The salad was nice and fresh. Guinness was perfect temperature. Will definitely be back during my stay! My friend ordered the French onion soup and pork and said it was absolutely delicious. read more

I dislike giving a bad review but it is much needed after my family and I were told to wait 30-45 mins for a table which we did & after almost an hour of wait (we were waiting patiently, I'd say/think), we asked for an update & they said they were waiting on one table ‍ (there's no other table/s to accommodate 4 adults, 1 child & a toddler?) ‍ I saw about 3-4 groups go in and got seated right away.. while us.. still waiting.. the hostess or host didn't even bother letting us know if we were soon to be seated or if the wait would be longer.. I think for a business, they should at least be attentive to EVERY customer/s & if they're not able to seat them on time.. please be considerate and honest so we won't be waiting for nothing. read more

We decided to wonder around downtown blowing rock for a while Saturday afternoon and decided to stop in to the pub for a drink and watch The Belmont. What a great place! The bartenders were fantastic! Everyone was friendly and helpful and just a great vibe here to relax. The bartenders knew their craft beers and what to suggest based on what we normally drink. We did get the Mac and cheese bites for an appetizer since they had ran out of scotched eggs. . Very good and would have them again. I stumbled into this glorious food establishment in Blowing Rock and I was not sorry. I had the most DELICIOUS FINGER LICKING food here and I cannot wait to go back to this heaven on earth restaurant. Not only was the food good, but so was the service. My waitress Macy was one of the best waitresses I have ever had in my life. It was like she read my mind and gave me what I needed before I even thought to ask. She NEVER let my drink get below half full and always made sure I have lots and lots of ranch. We bonded over the fact that we are both ranch lovers. Anytime I go back I WILL be asking for Macy!!!! This edition of Excited about Eating takes us to a British themed pub in Blowing Rock, NC, Six Pence Restaurant and Pub. Dora here. Located right on Main Street, you'll be lucky to snag a spot on the street. But, parking is free in Blowing Rock (as of this post), and there's also a two-story garage a couple blocks away, also free. If it's nice, take our cue and sit outside. The inside is cramped and a bit divey. Considering their other locations, an update here is long overdue. But even Old Man Winter and being forced to eat inside doesn't stop us from choosing this place. lol. For an appetizer, I chose the soup of the day, a beer cheese with bacon and andouille sausage. The soup was great, not real thick like most beer cheese soups, more like a brothy soup. The bacon and sausage was plentiful and it was served with corn bread. Dora here. Soooo good, even at 80 degrees outside! For my lunch, I chose the small order of the Fish & Chips, two large cod tenderloins and pub fries. Now this fish was some of the best I have ever tasted, the beer batter fried crispy, but inside, tender and flaky and meaty. If you really have an appetite, order the large and you get one more fish plank. Dora here. Whenever I crave Fish & Chips, this is the place I want them. The BEST ever! Not greasy at all, and sooo meaty and pull-apart tender. YUMMILICIOUS! Whenever we visit Six Pence, I always alternate between the Fish & Chips and the Shepherd's (or cottage) pie. Today, I was craving the pie. Comfort food for sure, and it's especially satisfying in the winter. But even in the middle of summer the rich tomatoey meaty base, that big puff of mashed potatoes, and cheese that pulls with your fork calls my name. lol. If you're craving something sweet at the end of your meal (because you surely won't be hungry!), skip the dessert menu and head a couple storefronts down to Kilwin's.
