This place is awesome. My whole family went to do the hair, the hair stylists and all the staff members were wearing masks. They also placed hand sanitizers for every seats which was very nice, so the customers can sanitize their hands any time they feel like it's needed. They also required all the customers to wear masks for everyone's protection as well. The hair stylist were so kind and especially I liked the guy named " Eddie". He was so good at everything. Never come to have your hair colored. They told me that finally I would have an ash brown, but finally I got a black. Seriously? No one can tell the difference between the new one and my original hair. They charged me over 500 dollars and finally I got nothing. If you are stupid enough like me, please come. read more

Main stylist gets grumpy when i asked for his input and didn't say anything (Language barrier I guess), gave me very inconsistent cuts and my last one was the one that did it. Had a late haircut and acted as if he was in a rush to take care of another lady, kept looking outside the window while cutting. Negative Facial expression when asked for a fix on hair. He basically butchered the hair like Edward scissor hands and unable to color correctly. He clearly does not know how to cut thick, wavy hair. I can bring in a picture of a hair style or color, and Eddie is upfront and gives honest suggestions on any color or style that truly compliments the customer. Not too thrilled about my experience here. Didn't get the look I wanted, and considering it was a $30 men's haircut pre-tip, I'm giving him 3 stars (would really be a 2.5). Although Eddie's technical skills are decent, his lack of English communication skills really sets him back. He'd ask me if I wanted certain parts shorter or longer, but didn't seem to understand my explanation. He just followed my yes or no and I ended up with an unbalanced cut that looked nothing like the picture I showed him (which was honestly just a normal short, nothing complicated). There were also parts that weren't layered right and I had to cut small areas where it was really bad at home by myself. I appreciate Eddie asking for my input, but all I really know about hair styling is what look I want. The stylist is ultimately responsible for the overall look and I don't think I should be expected to micromanage the haircut. read more

After coming here once, SJ Hair Studio has become my main hair salon. The owner is truly an expert in hairdos and contemporary hair styling. As a Korean male from NYC, this place is extremely cheap for the quality haircut you get. I cannot speak for women, but I imagine the quality would not be compromised based on sex. If you are someone who cares about his hair hygiene and the style that works for himself, you would absolutely visit SJ Hair Studio for a try. I live in Downtown Chicago, and I would gladly take the Metra train up Lake Forest every month (yeah I need to keep my hair short enough) to get my haircut here. A few recommendations: Call and make an appointment. This is basic courtesy on the customer's part, but just in case you're not familiar with Hair Studios. Secondly, have a conversation. Went in, didnt get shampooed, and very minimal english, an ok haircut for a freaking $55! Usually the korean hair salons charge $35 for a womens haircut with shampoo and conditioner. Thought I'd go to a local place because I like supporting local businesses and thought nothing of it when I noticed no pricing signs thinking how expensive can one haircut be. I'm a simple person that just gets a #2 fade around the sides and nothing cut off the top since I'm growing it out. Took less than 15 mins for my very easy haircut. Turns out my simple haircut was $50. So here I am with fifty less dollars and hairs all over my face saying to go elsewhere that's more transparent/flexible with the prices of the services they offer. (Also she cut my hair shorter than a 2, it doesn't look like a fade to me and after washing my hair it appears she cut hairs that shouldn't have been) to be fair she did ask if the length was okay only AFTER she shaved it super short! Like you can't fix it at that point, hun! I would rate zero stars if I could. Save yourself the trouble and take your money elsewhere, easily the worst haircut of my life. read more

I am an Asian American female, and based on reviews here had my haircut by Suji this past week. Seriously this was the finest haircut I have ever had in my life. Suji really knows what she is doing. I came in with long hair asking for a pixie cut, and showed her pictures of what I wanted. She started cutting my hair to about shoulder length, and after a few minutes I motioned that I wanted it cut to about eye level (I don't speak Korean). The receptionist (who speaks English) exchanged a few words with Suji, and then explained to me that at this point she was looking at the structure of my hair. She assessed the shape of the back of my head, and then told me that the cut I chose would work well for my head shape (otherwise she wouldn't have given it to me). Suji kept working, and then when she was about done explained why she modified my haircut compared to the pictures I had shown her, based on the structure and texture of my hair. I was very happy with the haircut she have me, and would go back again. If you do not speak Korean, I would just suggest that when you make your appointment, you make sure that it is a day when someone who speaks English is working (I don't know if this particular receptionist is there every day or not). The language barrier did not bother me or get in the way of receiving good service. Everyone in the salon was very friendly, and the salon itself is tastefully decorated and clean. This place is pretty far from me (45 min drive) but I would drive back every time just to get a haircut from them! A friend of mine referred me (which is why I drove out there in the first place) and I'm so glad that I did! This place has a very relaxing environment and the staff are very friendly and honest. Suzy was my hairdresser and she was amazing! Prior to my appointment, I had a very short angled bob and had not touched it for about a year. I thought it was probably all grown out and really due for a cut. When I showed up and told her I wanted to fix the grown out bob, she said it actually looked really nice the way it was and she suggested just keeping it. Either way, I wanted a different look with some bangs so I went ahead and got a trim to fix the angled part. I really appreciated that they were not out to just take my money, and the haircut turned out much better than I thought! I'm also kind of lazy when it comes to straightening my hair everyday, and the style she gave me allows me to simply blow try it and get the same look I walked out of the salon with. I wish there was less than a star to give. This place COMPLETELY ruined my hair. I went in based on the glowing reviews and my experience was horrific! To start, I called ahead to qualify that they provide the services and expertise I was looking for. My first clue to run the other way should've been the empty salon when I arrived. I came armed with pictures and specific requests of what I wanted (single process, partial highlight and trim as I've been growing my hair out for over a year). This took about 25 minutes of translation as NOBODY in the place beyond the receptionist speaks English. Again another red flag! After the foils came out and Eddie had already cut 5 inches off of my hair in the back, I noticed a huge yellow circle if color that bled out of the foil in the side if my hair, absolutely hideous, not normal and something that doesn't happen with people that know what they're doing. This is when I put on the breaks and where it got worse. They had ZERO clue how to fix this and suggested putting more bleach in my hair. I made them do another single process and now have a chunk of hair that's broken off as a result (my hair was in good shape pre-appointment). He then finished the cut and butchered my hair. I could've done a better job with blunt scissors. MAYDAY people, this was the worst experience and my hair is absolutely horrendous. The only positive thing I can say here is they took off a few charges and charged me $100 - I should've been paid to go there. I'm as Asian American male (not Korean), my haircut is fairly simply, but I'm very picky. I went based on Yelp reviews. It's been mentioned, but Korean is the first language spoken here, though they do speak and understand some English. The receptionist spoke fluent English, however, she's not the one cutting hair. Eddie cut my hair, he was very polite and professional, asked what I wanted before cutting my hair, but because of the language barrier I couldn't specify what things I wanted him to fix at the end of my haircut. I'm not holding this against him as he did a pretty good job on the sides and back, but left the top too long. He also did some things that were strange to me, 1) he shaved my "sideburns" so that they came to a point, i looked like a character from star trek, i shaved that as soon as i got home after yelling, "What the hell?!" 2) he shaved the patches of baby hair near my hairline. I don't know if that's like a style in korea or something, but didn't appreciate that too much. My biggest complaint would be the price. Maybe it's because I'm new to Lake Forest, but $28 for a hair cut (pre-tip) is kinda crazy. I was hoping I found a new place to get a haircut since my cut hair person is in Schaumburg (also Korean).
