A very mixed bag tonight. My son throughly enjoyed his chicken tenders, fries and root beer float while my wife's Shan Ellus burger lacked any real flavor and my Double Cheeseburger Deluxe was salty and simply unremarkable. All three of us agreed that the fries and tater tots were the highlight of all our meals. This is our daughters favorite ice cream place because it has the "bubble gum" flavor. We've never had food here so can't comment on that but we really enjoy stopping here for icecream-- we especially love the new patio/seating and the playground in the backyard! I've been going here for many, many years. And this year is definitely not like the previous. Last year there were only 2 cooks for the end of the season and they both were amazing. Some nights the ice cream side looked a little slim as well but they all were good too. I had a good report with the female cook from last year that ended the season. She always worked her butt off and her food was the best. I finally had a good conversation with her this season. Unfortunately it couldn't be long because she was cooking food, running food and helping with ice cream. I've been here and had other people cook my food and it was not good. Things were cold, stale and raw. Whatever is going on is not good for business. My family and I have also witnessed things that should not be happening. Mike Johnson, owner of Skan-Ellus Drive-In, says his grandfather owned the Bird's Nest Motel next door to Skan-Ellus. At the time, there was an ice cream shop across the street that would feature rock 'n' roll bands on Friday and Saturday nights. But, the music disturbed the motel guests, so Johnson's grandfather went across the street to ask the shop to keep the noise down. Getting a rude response, he decided to build and open his own ice cream shop. Within the first year, Johnson said his grandfather was so busy, Johnson's parents stepped in to help him out. Johnson's father operated Skan-Ellus for several years, and then Johnson bought it from him years ago to maintain the family and community tradition. Skan-Ellus -- through its cook's handiwork -- makes its own Skan-Ellus burger, barbecue burger, barbecue pork, chili, soup, potato salad, macaroni salad, coleslaw and many other foods on the eatery's menu, all using the same recipes they've used for 50+ years. Wife and I stopped in last weekend looking for a quick dinner and some ice cream. Place is what you'd expect from a drive-in....you go up to a counter, order your food, and wait for it to be made at another window. Small dining area in the back as well as several outdoor tables. Nothing fancy. I ordered their signature Skan-Ellus burger, while my wife went for the hot beef with gravy sandwich and a side of mashed potatoes, and we split an order of fries and an order of buffalo chicken tenders. Food was made relatively quickly and the part time help at the counters was friendly and accommodating. We sat in the back to eat in. My wife loved her beef sandwich with gravy and said it reminded her of home meals her mother would make. The Skan-Ellus burger is more of a loose meat sandwich than a patty. Not a bad little sandwich but needs some kinda condiments for some more flavor. Definitely messy. The bun they used for it though was AMAZING. No idea what it was, almost like a sturdier Brioche bun. But it was great. Fries were great, crispy and battered, like I like them. Buffalo tenders were a little disappointing. The tenders were good quality, but the sauce was more on the butter side than buffalo. My wife went for a peanut butter/Oreo soft twist ice cream afterwards while I grabbed a root beer float. Huge portions for each, couldn't even finish my float. Prices for everything were more than reasonable. It's not a place I would seek out, but definitely good to grab a quick bite to eat or some ice cream. read more

Ample parking, order at the window, and you have the options of to go, sitting at the picnic tables or in the indoor dining room. No matter the weather or what's happening it's a fantastic quick place to eat. I got their house burger the Skan-Ellus burger which is a bargain at 3.50. And what I can say about it is it's sort of like a sloppy Joe and taco meat had a baby and put it on a delicious potato style roll. You don't have to be fancy to do things delicious. I also ordered a side of fries and a soda and it was less than 10$ for lunch. Which no one can ever complain about. Their fries are a crunch coat batter style fry and not the hand cut ones I love. But they were still fried to perfection and delicious. And if you want. They have a full service ice cream bar as well. So sad..... we've been coming here for years for that after dinner ice cream, my husband rarely had a sweet tooth but when he does he loves to get a soft dip vanilla with cherry dip and it brings him back to his childhood. How can it be that you can stand at the window ready to order and the workers can look right at you and not acknowledge your presence? Absolutely no customer service skills.
