Who goes ice skating these days? Lots of young children, pre-teens, teenagers and sometimes, parents with young children. So.... what an adventure to drop in here way far away near the Walkersville area of Frederick. The rink itself looks like it could be from any era in the last 50 years, but really, what do you want from an ice skating rink? Parking is easy. Finding the location is easy. Going to the register and paying for your pass and rental (if you don't have your own skates) is easy. The cost is incredibly low - I feel like they were cheaper than when I was in high school back in the day in a land far far away from this place. Anyhow, getting your skates, also incredible easy. They have lockers for your stuff that cost you, wait for it, 2 quarters! So cute! They have a few vending machines, mostly ice cream, and a snack bar where you can get some cheap food and beverages. It is not expensive by any measure. They have teams and others who train and play here, but they have open skates. The open skates are usually on the weekends. And, again, wow, I could not believe how cheap. We had a great time skating, but since we're not 12 year old children, our bodies were a little less flexible and a lot more sensitive, so we didn't even last the whole 1.5 hour session. Ha ha! We still had a fabulous time, and will probably go back winter holidays 2024 for a new tradition. In other words - highly recommended for a cheap, short adventure! read more

One of my best friends lives in Frederick and when she decided to start taking lessons here, I joined her. I took Adult beginner classes between November 2017 and January 2018, and frequently came up for public skating sessions as well. The lessons are 25 minutes long; there are numerous different levels of classes going on at the same time in different sections of the ice. There were only 3 people in my class including myself, which was nice since it felt a bit more private. My instructor was Cathy, who was really friendly and nice, and gave me some hands-on help when I needed it. She can sometimes be a bit forgetful or go off on tangents which can eat into class time a bit, but she was a good teacher for my level and always upbeat and positive. If you can't skate at all, just keep in mind that the 1st few classes you might need to slip and slide to your section of the ice for class, but this doesn't last long. My lessons included 8 free public skating sessions (skate rentals were included for class days, but not public skating sessions). The calendar of public sessions is available on the website, as well as in paper form at the rink. The public sessions were almost always pretty busy on weekends. However, a few times, I managed to come in on weekdays and it was a lot emptier, especially if you got there for an early session. Around the holidays, the rink started providing tons of Cheapskate sessions (public sessions at lower admission prices, and skate rentals were $1 instead if $3). Most of the time the ice was fairly smooth, with bumpy areas, although 1 time I came for the last 1.5 hours of a public skate session on a Sunday afternoon and the ice was crowded and bumpy--pretty bad to skate on. All the other times the ice was a lot better. There are lockers for rent; they accept quarters only and cost $0.50 to rent. If you need to get quarters, the pro shop will exchange them for cash. Note that you will inevitably lose quarters to lockers that don't work; this is mostly just luck and trial-and-error. The rental skates usually fit reasonably well, although some alternatively gave me toe pain or ankle pain. Some of the teenaged staff are a bit uninterested, but most of the staff are reasonably friendly. Service can be slow, as I believe some people have multiple roles so the pro shop or skate rental might be left unmanned for several minutes if the employee is otherwise engaged. The facilities are usable, if perpetually a bit dirty. I was able to sign up for classes by phone, although I only got through the 2nd time I called. The rink accepts credit cards, but not Amex. There is plenty of parking. Overall, a pretty okay place to skate. read more

During a Friday night teen skate my 13 year olds friend was tackled on the ice and put in a head lock. This was while one of the skate guards watched. My son pulled the other kid off. The kid was not kicked out or discipline in any way. 10 minutes later in the hallway between the two rinks the kid comes up and sucker punches my son in the face. The kid is then made to leave the building, but not the property as a whole so he stands at the door yelling how he's going to beat my son up. The staff do nothing. They collect no info on the kid or call his parents or anything. We asked for a meeting with the general manager, Lisa Williams, to discuss our concerns. Her attitude was disgusting and rude. She was completely dismissive and purposely avoided any serious discussion. We had 3 main suggestions. First, enforce the rules you have. If the kid had been kicked out after the first time he attacked someone then he wouldn't have punched my son later. Second, get the kids name and parents contact info when they did kick him out, which she says is info they need to not let the kid back in later. Third, make the kid leave the property so he can't stand outside and threaten other people. Call the police if you have to. She dismissed both our concerns and our suggestions. She said it's not their job to watch the kids, and if we wanted them to do that then she would have to hire 20 more people and it would cost each person $50 to get in. That is of course ridiculous, we aren't asking them to babysit, all we were asking is to enforce the rules they have and take some common sense actions to make things a little better. She was only concerned about denying liability and responsibility for anything and everything. So beware, the people in charge here have little concern for your child's welfare and have no interest in improving the situation. read more

This is the last real fun place for kids and teens to go in Frederick. Long gone are the days of the old school roller skating rink. :( But I'm grateful for Skate Frederick. Oh remember the days when you wish you were the cool girl, so once the slow music comes on and the lights are dimmed, you get to hold your bf or gf's hand and skate around. LOL. Don't feel bad for me....I had my moment once in middle school and was quite disappointed by the clamy hands. lol. Note: Bring your own skates! The rental skates always gave me horrible blisters! I would totally sock up and still got the painful blisters. :( I can't really speak to the current staff. Back in the day everyone was nice. Pretty much the place was staffed by young people, so it was all good. Skate Frederick has lessons and a store that has awesome outfits for ice skaters. There's a party area. Hockey team. Loved Skate Frederick, hated the prices. I remember only being able to go once in a while. read more

Let's face it, the staff at ice rinks are never the most cheerful people in the world -- and Skate Frederick is no exception. Other than Justin and Barbara (two instructors) everyone else, without fail, acts totally annoyed that you're there, they're there, or whatever. Guards (I use that term loosely) are not on the ice for the benefit of skater safety, but to practice hockey moves and chat up teenage girls. The ice here could be kept up a little smoother, but it's okay. The snack bar is overpriced and it takes for-freakin-ever for the 2 or 3 teen employees behind the counter to fulfill an order, no matter how simple, so plan on a long line. They offer loads of lessons, minicamps, hockey teams & birthday party packages. SF is one of the only facilities like this in the area, so of course they aren't going to bend over backwards accomodating you with something as antiquated as Decent Service or Professional Attitude. When you're a kid you don't care about this kind of thing, but when you're the parent and HAVE the kids using the place, it tends to piss you off a little. read more

Family of 4 visiting for the first time for public skate. Approached what appeared to be the front to purchase tickets where there is a short line, but no employees. I say appears to the front because there are no posted prices or "menu" to indicate. 5 minutes pass and there is no one. I go looking and finally find an employee at skate rental. I tell him there is no one at the front and he advised he is probably in the back sharpening skates. I ask if he can help, nope, go back and wait. Guy eventually shows, apologizes and is somewhat helpful since we have questions any first timer would have. On to skate rental, this time he's willing to help since it's his department. Rental skates are always going to be a disappointment and these skates were no exception. Mine were the worst and barely functional. The rest of the family had decent enough skates. Now skates are on and it's time to skate! Wait, there is a hockey game going on. Turns out there is a second rink for public skate with zero signage on how to get there. Go through a door down a hallway and you'll see it eventually. Poor design and again nothing that helps in the way of signage. The rink was busy but not overwhelmingly so. The first door you come to says it's the exit door (yippee, a sign!!!!) but everyone is just using it to get on and off. Again, poor design. I estimate that 150 people were on the ice and there was 1 identifiable employee so there was nothing in the way of enforcement of rink rules or q&a. Now on the the arcade! Some games are turned off and appear to have been that way for a long time. 2 separate machines eat our money. Get me out of this dump. At least the kids had fun, until they couldn't play the games... read more

My kids(ages 5 and 9)both play youth hockey, skills programs, etc. at Skate Frederick. Although only a year, I find the rink to be in bad repair and dirty. You can spend about ten minutes in the building to find out that there in not much pride taken in the rink. The in-house hockey program reflects the rink. Disorganized and poorly managed. It's time to give Hagerstown or Rockville a try. read more

My son and myself have been playing Ice Hockey here for roughly 5 years. It's a pretty good place to play with two sheets of ice. Management and the pro shop are also pretty good. Not perfect but we've built lots of close friends here over the years. read more

Worst Ice Rink I have ben at. Don't go there if you plan on doing Stick and Shoot! The staff was arrogant and rude, the Ice Rink was in bad shape. The guy who did the ice did a bad job, the facility is dirty and not in a great shape. We came to Stick and Shoot (which is practice ) But the people took over the entire rink and played a game (which is Not supposed to be on stick and shoot) . They didn't care about others on the rink and ran the kids over. When confronted the staff the said they don't care. read more
