I've driven past Skippers a million times on the way into or out of Oxford and every time my thoughts were that I've got to check this place out some day. Today was the day! I started smiling as soon as we walked in. Such a cool and fun atmosphere. Chicago sports memorabilia everywhere you look along with Chicago food favorites on offer. The bar is old and wooden with comfortable seats. It has a really nostalgic feel, like an urban neighborhood pub from decades ago. Plenty of tables, and I've heard rumors of an upper deck that is open at appropriate times. There is also outdoor seating on High Street. The atmosphere is undoubtedly very different on a Friday night when it's packed with upper classmen throwing back shots, but on a weekday late afternoon suppertime I'd say it's family friendly and welcoming to all. (I even saw a sign behind the bar: No explicit lyrics before 9 pm.) There were several staff members at work either making food or behind the bar. They were all quite young, and quite friendly and cheerful. I'm holding off on the fifth star till we get a chance to try the food. We had already eaten and just stopped for a couple of beers (a Truth and a Mich Ultra, on tap). But now I'm writing this I'm getting a serious craving for Italian Beef, so hope to be back soon. read more

I have a deep love for Skippers. It is some of the best food in Oxford even if it's just frozen and fried. It is consistently good whether it's a drunk gorging session or just an afternoon meal. Service is quick even when it's packed, and the patio on a nice day is lovely. Absolutely an Oxford staple and arguably the most iconic Oxford food place. Owner Tommy is slightly creepy towards college girls but can't dock the establishment over that. read more

Gyro platter here is the way to go! Big fan of both the lamb and chicken gyros, which comes with tomato and lettuce. The lamb is indulgent, and comes with the classic cucumber tzatziki sauce; the chicken is nicely done and comes with a honey mustard sauce (can be subbed with the tzatziki sauce). You can select either the normal or waffle fries, and I have been happy with both! The platter is a great deal for a filling lunch option. Though the place is old and could use a revamp and some updates, you feel relaxed and worry free as you eat from this simple, comfort food filled menu. Staff was friendly and attentive. The best bar in Oxford. Easiest way to get a drink here, come in summer. Possibly the only time you find a seat at the bar. Also has food. You'll have better luck with the drinks here. I was able to find a seat at the bar. I started with a New Belgium Hemperor. This was about $5, which for a bottle of beer is kind of high. It's very strong though, with a bit of extra juice if you know what I'm talking about. Maybe if you're feeling bold get a beer tower. It also has some food. Everything is just greasy crap. However, don't let that fool you. The food is great! We have been here several times and it has never disappointed! If this isn't the first place your friends take you to eat in Oxford you need new friends. Have never had a bad meal here and I've probably had everything except the salads. If it's busy you might not get all the fries you ordered but that's the way it goes in a college bar. Sit outside if you can and order a beer tower. read more

Had to try this Oxford icon. It's always busy but was able to place and order after only 10 min wait this day. Ordered the Gyro platter. I'm a bit of s gyro snob, and I had to say it was only average. Lots of meat but not much taztziki sauce or tomato. . The meet was thinly sliced. Almost paper thin. Not really the best. My wife said her turkey Rueben tasted great but was a little greasy for her preference. Son loved his coney. Large menu, popular. Lots of deep fried stuff. I'll give it another try. I heard the burgers are great One year later....... I returned to Skippers to give it another go. And I have to say it was terrific. One of the owners was really friendly and engaging when we walked in. He recommended the Italian beef sandwich . It was great!! I had it with sautéed onions , peppers. It was delicious. My wife had a BLT on pita with light chipotle mayo and she also thought it was excellent. I had to try a bite of my sons burger that he raves about and it was flavorful and moist. This place was pretty crowded around the Thanksgiving holiday, but served up a pretty quick meal for 6 adults. I had the Not a Club sandwich, which included some very nice bacon and meats. The real show stopper are the fries, both the waffle cut and the regular. Served hot and perfectly seasoned, these are a must when you arrive. The shop is no frills, order at counter and take a seat at some table and chairs that have seen better days. But for a quick bite in town, hit this place up. read more

First of all, I LOVE this place. They have a wide variety of choices on their menu and I'm sure it's all delicious although I've only tried the gyro. I have high standards for a gyro. It's very important that the meat is crisp, not soggy, and that there's enough tzatziki but not too much. This place does all of that! They really knock it out of the park even though it's the last place you would expect to have a really good gyro. They also have killer mac n cheese bites that I would recommend to anyone. Also, they take orders while you stand in line so as to get the food going faster before you actually pay. I love this because otherwise the food would probably take awhile. Overall, I love this place and will definitely be back plenty of times. read more

I ate here recently and got what I expected. Friendly staff who got my order correct. The burger was good and I gladly ate all of it. However I felt that the patty itself did not have a lot of flavor or anything that could set it apart from other burgers. This is the only reason I am not giving a 5 star. Skips holds a special place in my heart as a former Miami grad. I think it's every freshman's dream to order a beer tower and relax on the patio on a nice day. Come spring that's all people seem to be doing, don't you have class?? The food here is also so good, come for the waffle fries. These bad boys are addictive and totally worth the calories. From what I understand they are now open late-night for all of the college kid's late-night hunger emergencies. Have I mentioned how cheap this place is as well? If you're looking in uptown Oxford for good, affordable, unpretentious food in a relaxed atmosphere, look no further than Skipper's Pub. Specialties of the house - burgers, fries, gyros, cold beers (especially in 3-foot-tall "towers"). The burgers can be ordered loaded up with everything, and are super messy i.e. delicious. Their fried are terrific, too, with self-serve ketchup so you can get as much as you want. The place isn't fancy, but it is darn good. You're likely to see current students next to faculty next to 70-year-old alumni in this place, all chowing down on good, simple, hot food. I'll be back for sure (again and again). read more

For less than $8, you get an awesome gyro with refreshing tzatziki sauce served up on pita. That there's only minor vegetables (2 slices of tomatoes and a couple of slices of onion) doesn't take anything away from what is the best (only?) gyro in Oxford. It also comes with a side of your choice of fries/nachos/fresh fruits. For 30 cents more, you can get waffle fries. Is it the most authentic or best ever? Of course not. But given that Oxford is a small college town with almost no ethnic Greek population, I'll take this gyro-from-a-pub-named-Skipper's any day. read more
