Ok. I've been patronizing Skipper's for as long as it's been in business...even before I had a taste for shrimp. I even have a t-shirt I wear proudly in my home town. Like many things here in Destin over the last few years, change is abrupt and frustrating. And for this review I don't mean ownership...I've continued patronizing since the original Skipper sold out and still love the shrimp and tuna dip there--and the folks helping behind the counter. I will typically visit 4 to 5 times during a break here to ensure we always have fresh, local, steamed shrimp in the fridge...it doesn't last long. And Skipper's has always had the best. But my first visit this summer really bothered me. After an honestly strange interaction with the young man handling the counter--seemed he couldn't interpret the questions I was asking about sizes, though I was being somewhat comic (I was happy to be getting my first batch of the summer!)--I chose my size and weight and requested it to be steamed with cajun seasoning, my usual. He then told me it would cost $5 to steam. I was floored. Again, how many years I can't even count that I've followed a routine of hitting Skipper's, grabbing a couple pounds and a tuna dip, request the steam, pay, leave the tuna dip on ice, head to Winn Dixie for a couple items, return in 10 mins to pick up the steaming hot shrimp, and head back to the condo to enjoy the best shrimp in the world. Never have I been charged to steam. So I asked the guy behind the counter when they started charging. His reponse? "We always have." I asked how long is "always" to him. He said since he'd been working there. I asked how long that has been. He said "about 8 months." Well, little did he know I had just followed my routine in April and was not charged for steaming. And I followed it several times in November as well with no charge. At the very least get the story and justification straight. It's enough to see the new credit card transaction charges on everything in Destin now (pre-tax, btw). This is just another hit. And I get it...small businesses have it tough, no doubt. And I will always support small businesses...as long as they make me feel good. This young man did not. And one more thing to add here...unfortunately another criticisim. On our next visit a few days later (can't give up the shrimp, and there really is no better...though there's a spot closer to Destin that may compete I've learned), my wife followed my routine while I was golfing. When I arrived back home, she was almost embarrassed to tell me that the steamed shrimp had come with butter and lemon...without notice. And I mean a Southern serving of butter...a pool of it in the tin container. We absolutely prefer our shrimp seasoned only (cajun, not old bay). Period. Adding a ton of butter with no check for preference or confirmation of a practice a new patron or old would never know was default (albeit, in the last few years the folks behind the counter would know me so knew how I liked it, which I also cherish) is just a straight up failure of service to me. I will say we drained the butter and saved it as it was tasty as heck on toasted bread, but not with our traditional shrimp enjoyment. Whenever I meet a new tourist to this area no matter where that may be--the geographic breadth of folks visiting here is amazing the last few years--I ALWAYS recommend Skippers fresh shrimp and tuna dip. I even did so with a family we met in the Austin airport on the way here headed to their first vacation in Miramar Beach and happened to be staying right across from Skipper's on old 98. I even bragged about how Skipper's steams it for you right on the spot. I surely hope they were asked if they wanted butter and lemon. read more

It was as my husband's birthday and he wanted a key lime pie. I was told to go to Skippers for one. We had a large party so I bought two for $60. I also picked up the tuna dip. The tuna dip was delicious with crackers and veggies. However, my husband didn't like the key lime pie. I always make mine fresh for him, but we're visiting from AZ so unable to this time. It didn't have the tart taste a key lime pie should have and it had more of a whipped texture to it. The crust was too moist and we took it from their refrigerator section. Sorry honey read more

Shrimp was great and the key lime pie is a nice variation of a traditional dessert. Biggest issue is the marketing of some of their dishes. The 2lb Ruby Red shrimp boil is presented on the Door Dash menu as if it comes with corn and potatoes. Turns out it doesn't, and when we called about it after our order was delivered we were told "you have to ask for that extra". read more

I do not recommend Skippers Seafood Market. I first visited about three years ago after reading several positive reviews. At the time, I was not very impressed with the selection or prices, but it was convenient, so I decided to give them another chance. I returned last year and was even more disappointed. The selection was limited, the prices seemed high, and I questioned whether the seafood was any fresher than what I could buy at a grocery store. This year was my final visit. The selection was the worst I have seen. They only had large shrimp, a few small shrimp, and two fish options, both in large cuts. When I asked if they could cut the fish down for my small order, they would not. To make matters worse, the prices were about 30% higher than the Winn-Dixie right next door. Based on my experiences over the past three years, I cannot recommend this market. The limited selection, lack of flexibility, and significantly higher prices do not justify shopping here when better values are available nearby. read more

Order in and take it home! They do have outdoor seating. Different types of shrimp. Steam it, corn on the cob and potatoes. All bay seasoning and other types of seasoning available. $17 a pound. I got 3 pounds of shrimp corn and potatoes for $80. It fed three adults easily, we had 25 shrimp left over. every pound is about 30 shrimp. read more

Stopped here just before my beautiful vacation ended. I had THE best experience! I couldn't go back home to Kentucky without some fresh shrimp and crab legs. The service was wonderful, and felt like being at home. The shrimp was amazingly FRESH, and extremely yummy! Very nice, but small, seafood market. We had to try back 3 times because they were sold out of fish. Finally, around 2pm the fresh fish arrived. We chose the flounder and it was delicious. We also got one of the key lime pies. The man behind the counter said his mother makes the pies. He offered a money back guarantee if it wasn't the best we had ever had. Well it was. I am super impressed with the customer service provided, as a start. I called to ask a few questions before going and the young man was friendly and helpful. Seemed genuinely happy I was calling. We got 4lbs of royal reds, key lime pie and their cocktail sauce. They steamed and seasoned the shrimp to perfection. The key lime was delicious. It is a light custard type and was very good. The cocktail sauce was good. The fish looked great, but we didn't try any. They took great care of us and we will be back soon. read more

Seafood is expensive we all know that, so when you shell out money for fresh you have to get good quality & service at the counter. We got that & more here at skippers. My friend & I were just looking for steamed shrimp for lunch but also finding a place to grab scallops & other stuff later in the week. While we were waiting for the shrimp the owner or manager or something asked if we had a grill & we said yea, he then proceeded to GIVE us one of the yellowfin tuna steaks because he was switching it out with some fresh cuts. We took that bad boy home & grilled it for an awesome lunch. We are making a list of what we are getting when we go back tomorrow & we will be buying a tuna steak (at least one). read more

we have tried a few different seafood markets during our trip this week, but have come back to Skippers 3 times. The gentleman and young lady running the store were an absolute delight to speak to tonight. We cannot wait to return to Miramar and purchase seafood here again. Went here probably 4 days of our 8 day vacation to buy food to cook. We shopped around in about a 30 min driving radius and this was the least expensive and best quality we could find. Waking in and smelling the fresh seafood was nice, immediately greeted with friendly faces and excellent customer service. They steamed our seafood per our request and everything turned out delicious! We had gulf shrimp, snow crab legs and their smoked tuna dip. My husband, daughter, and I ate at Skipper for the first time last night. Shrimp, Royal Reds, crab leg steam-pot with house seasoning, corn and potatoes was outstanding! We sat out in the patio that had plenty of picnic table seating and really enjoyed ourselves. Lots of locals showed up and took their orders to go, so you know this place is the real deal. I don't need the lady at the front counter to give me a big hug and love me around the neck to have a good experience. If I'm so insecure that I need the fish lady to make me feel special then go to Red Lobster and don't bother with fresh fish. My wife's family introduced me to Skippers years ago and that started my love for his smoked tuna dip. We buy it by the tubs and usually eat at least one before our trip is 1/2 complete. I have called Skippers and had it shipped in dry ice ....the shipping cost more than 2 tubs! I've even tried duplicating the recipe and then fell back to bribing some friends on vacation to make a 90 mile detour to pick us up a cooler load on their way back to Texas. This week we had mahi-mahi and grouper one night that was the best I've ever eaten. Skippers may not have the friendliest staff or a waiting area that feels like a fish cold storage plant. It's a fresh fish store and even fresh fish right out of the ocean stinks! I'm going back shopping at 10am tomorrow right when they open! read more
