This place was terrible! Young elementary school kids were serving and working. It's 93 degrees outside! Everything was dirty. Mosquitoes were bad. I originally got lemonade it tasted like water I asked for sweet tea instead. It took forever for me to get it. They gave us styrofoam cups half full and I only got one refill half full no lids. Bugs would fly in our drinks. It's very hot and there is no inside. I am 8 months pregnant and needed something to drink but I didn't want to ask again because the first time I asked he gave me a bad look and it was only half full. I got the shrimp and half was the right kind of shrimp and the other half was small and fishy. My husbands fries were cold he barely got any. He got no sauce on his po boy with barely any shrimp. My fried pickles and hush puppies were undercooked. I feel bad for the cook he was cooking and serving us! Plus there is a 3.50 extra charge for some boating thing. It says no opened on yelp but it is open. I just don't recommend eating here. read more

Ok so I haven't been to scogies to eat thought about it read reviews and it appears that 25% gave 5 stars and 25% gave 1star 50% are split between the two. My question is whether the owner and staff read this? I will be there soon as a diner to see what happens to me. I mean who cares about what other people think. As long as you do me right? I think you all are great maybe you can find some way of changing the look inside and outside, for some stuck up boat people and some car people. This place is really actually pretty cool. It is my kind of lakefront shack. We love the boat ride over here and it is a lot easier to get to than pelican pete's. Although, I have not tried PP's food. The service here is pretty good to me. They try their best to get the food out while it is hot when there are lots of hot sweaty lake folk everywhere. We ordered the following: Fried Smoked Provolone Wedges- These were pretty uneventful for me. I did not get the smoke at all or the sharpness of provolone. This was really more like a normal mozz stick in flavor. MEH. Smoked Mahi Fish Dip- OH YEAH. OH YEAH. OH YEAH! This is what I was looking for my entire life. This is the bomb.com. You need to try this. It is perfectly smoky and has a nice crunch of celery and is cold and yummy on a hot day. GET THIS. Grouper Fingers- These are pretty good too. Not dry or full of breading. They're perfect really. Nice work. Also... SKOGIE SAUCE- I have no idea what the hell is in this thing, but I could drink it basically. Dip everything in it. You're welcome. I ordered the Sampler Platter- (contains: 1/2 Grouper or 7 Fingers, 3 Shrimp, 2 Oysters, 2 Crab Balls, 2 Hushpuppies, & 2 sides.) I gave away my oysters because EW. But the hushpuppies are homemade and have bites of corn and onion in them. They are great. Hot, crunchy and soft in the middle. The shrimp is pretty good too. Nothing special. The crab balls were not up to par at all. It is basically a hush puppie ( not as good as the homemade ones mentioned above) and a TOUCH of crab. Nope, not for me. Oh my GAWD! We were out boating all day and had to come in for some snack. Good thing too, because this was a real treat! I got to try hush puppies and fried green tomatoes for the first time. Not a good experience :(. I have enjoyed this restaurant for the past 10 years and that is why it's so disappointing to write about the review. But after asking four different staff for a menu and all of the responses were "well I'm not your server" I decided it was appropriate to drop a one star on the restaurant I've loved growing up. At the time we entered we were the only three guest at work the restaurant and I understand restaurant make the silly stupid mistakes when there not busy because everyone seems to let the guard down, but this was just a pathetic excuse of an establishment. I got the chance to meet the owner and explain that I have been supporting his restaurant for over ten years and he obviously didn't give s single sh*t. read more

Stumbled upon this place on the Sunday evening of Memorial Day weekend. Lakeside...awesome atmosphere for evening dinner at the lake. Families all around eating outside on picnic tables. We are on the screened porch. Prompt service. Smoked Gouda and shrimp fritters were great...but didn't see any evidence of the shrimp in them. Also ordered the Mac n cheese fritters and chicken tender dinner. All good. Really a cool local "beach like" joint. Will bring friends back. read more

Don't expect too much and you'll be fine. We sat on some old patio furniture outside on the grass. My wife had the shrimp and grits with hush puppies. I had a crab BLT. Neither were particularly good. My sandwich had a stale bun, tasteless lettuce and tomato, and the crab was fairly tasteless as well. My side had part of a bread tag on the plate. My wife's meal was pretty similar. Our server was attentive, but the food took quite a long time, and she brought the bill before we were finished, even though the restaurant was half empty. I wouldn't go out of my way to go there again, but if I had a boat at the marina, I'd probably eat there. read more

Went Skogies Sunday they said they only serve Breakfast buffet from 10 till 2 pm. We asked about regular menu. Because we saw other people eating cheese burgers and chicken fingers and fries they said that was because of dietary reason. Are you joking will never go back. read more

DO NOT GO!!! The only seating is outdoor only, there was no AC or fans out. We were mislead thinking there was indoor seating. The tables were very dirty and bugs were everywhere. The server warned us about the Yellow Jackets that were everywhere. When bugs were in my drink and I asked for a new cup he dumped out my drink in-front of me and refilled the same cup. The sweet potato tots were bitter and not good at all! The wings were very basic and cooked okay, but definitely not worth the rest of the day. There was a very dirty child running around, serving food and doing serving tasks one was around 8-10 and one under 7. Super expensive. We were not given caps for the cup and when I asked for a lid, or lemon, or anything else the answer was "I don't think we have that, I'll see what I can find." The mustard was COVERED in dirt and grim and I was scared to use any condiments. If this is how it looks to the customers, I am scared to see the indoors! I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. The service was awful, the food was basically cafeteria food, and the atmosphere was just okay. I'm not usually one to leave reviews, but I felt compelled to since I was very unimpressed from the start. The alcohol is very well priced, but the food is where they must make their money since it's overpriced. Our waitress comes to take our drink order, and she appears to either be overheated or sick. She was incredibly underwhelming. She got our drinks, and she served me the blue MoFo alcoholic beverage which had barely any ice in it. (It was 90+ degrees outside). We then ordered the zucchini fries from another waitress who wasn't our original girl because our original girl was nowhere to be found. This waitress then appears visibly irritated with our waitress for not taking care of us. (I'm pretty sure our hero waitress was a manager). The zucchini fries were very limp and greasy- not what you'd expect at all from a fried appetizer. Then our food comes out, and it looks incredibly subpar with minimal effort put into making it. I ordered the grilled fish tacos, and to my surprise I'm served mostly tortilla with some cut lettuce and tomatoes, and a skimpy piece of fish in one of the tacos. (It appeared to be cut in half of what it was supposed to be). Overall I was just so shocked, and this added to the underwhelming feeling I already had for this place. Thank goodness the manager came over and helped settle our concerns by bringing me another piece of grilled fish to make up for the skimpy piece I was served. If not for her I would be leaving a 1 star review. She was the only thing that gave me a glimmer of hope about this place. (She has long, black hair, a nose ring, and she's very slim and slender- pretty face). Our original waitress then comes by and tells us she isn't feeling well, so Amber (or a similar name) has been helping serve us. I hope this manager-seeming employee gets the wages and raise that she deserves! :D I worked retail management for years, so I know that it's difficult not only serving the public but also worrying about your employees as well. Has so much potential to be better.... Service is horrible and food sub par... Came for the first time of the season on a Thursday night... hardly anyone here... waitress never checked on our drinks. We had been waiting 30 min and then she came and told us they "just ran out" of mini corn dogs, what my son ordered... waited another 30 min for our food and my order was wrong and cold. Had to get another waitress to help us... just sad because it's not even the busy season yet. It's a great place for a snack or a meal if you are at the lake or the marina. If the constabulary are looking for you you are going to see them first high up on this lakeside hill. It's casual, a relaxed atmosphere. Sandwiches are good, especially the grouper. Solid burger if that's you choice. Service is agreeable. The years have been kind to this old shack. They keep slapping paint in her and it'll keep the rain off of you but it's not the kind of place you want to take your mother in law the first time you meet her. read more

I went twice. Once with my friends who live on the boat and another time (same day, later in the afternoon). Do not expect much from their food. Is mostly bar fare (Breaded/fried) The first visit itself was good. 3 star for the food, 5 for the kind attentions of the bartender... the second one was non-existent due to the fact we were ignored while we were out in the picnic table area (We had a dog). I went inside after a long wait and me trying to get someone's attention, to let them know we needed someone and waited another 10 minutes. Nobody ever came. Great place to eat seafood outside. You are about 150 feet from the water. I like the shrimp and grouper fingers. The portions are a nice size. My wife and I split an entree which includes 2 sides. Instead of 2 sides we order 3 to fill us up. It is BYOB but you have to pay for a cup to drink and no outside containers can be showing. As for the price, I say for seafood it is about the right price for the area. The entrees are any were from $10 to $16 or a sandwich/burger for $8. This place is closed during the winter and opens sometime in April and closes around September. read more

If you want food, service and coffee that is drinkable do not go here!! The coffee was some sort of black water. It was the hands down the worst coffee I have ever had! My girlfriend and I order scrambled eggs and a biscuit and eggs benedict and home fries. Well that literally took 53 minutes. There were a total of 13 people in the restaurant including the two of us. The food was ok, cold and really nothing special. I could have made the same thing at home in 10 minutes. Hit this place up since we were in the Gainesville area over Saturday and saw the reviews. Just the type of place I like, lots of local color and kitsch. Was greeted and sat right away. Got the Boom Boom shrimp as an appetizer - very good. Shrimp perfectly fried is a sweet/savory slightly spicy Thai sauce. Our entrees were blackened shrimp with black beans and yellow rice and hushpuppies - And Grouper with lemon pepper, Hushpuppies and fries. Hushpuppies on both orders were overcooked - dark brown and oily. Kids chicken was a bit overcooked and very salty, fries were good hot and crisp. The yellow rice looked like a Lipton mix pack with black beans added. There was a strange flavor that I could not put my finger on in both the beans and rice (took separate bites of each). The grouper was tasty, but salty, the blackened shrimp were good, but not great. Judging from the reviews, the fried items seem to be the better/popular items. If we had only had the boom boom shrimp with fires, I would have given a higher rating. Would like to go back and try again with the fried items or the brunch. We've been going to Skogies for years when visiting family who live on Lake Lanier. It's a flip-flop, swimsuit, just-off-the-boat type of place. Service has always been pleasant for us. The food is consistently average. A bonanza of fried this and that with a smattering of I-wish-I-was-gourmet items. The kitchen is not fast. Go to the restroom before you go unless you like public park facilities. The hush puppies, fried shrimp and sweet potato tots were tasty. Shrimp burger was a pass. In short, this is a lakeside fried food joint not a linen tablecloth bistro. Dock the boat, put on your flip flops, order some fried stuff, lose the iPhones, be patient and enjoy your company. read more

Our waitress who took our order was friendly and down to earth, but the food was delivered by just the opposite & one could tell of her unpleasantness. The grits were way too sweet for southern roots and the home fries came from someone's freezer. But the "cat head biscuit" fluffy & toasted perfectly, and whatever else you order, omelettes, sweet potato pancakes, 3 eggs over easy... just make sure your stomach is ready to absorb the abundance; for this breakfast stop isn't shy to fulfill the first meal of the day. Skogies has steadily upgraded over the last few years. They still have outdoor dining and screened porch dining but they now also have indoor (air conditioned) dining. Also, they used to have you order at a window and then they would bring it to you - but you now have the option of table service - and the service is very good, a family feel. Their best dishes are their Shrimp (coconut, fried or grilled) and their grouper. Side dishes are uneven at best. French fries tend to be overcooked, other sides are marginal. Price wise I guess the seafood is OK, but I believe they need a few more low cost options on the menu - It was $60 for three of us and that was with two of us drinking water and no deserts. Their prices have edged up over the years. The atmosphere is good - we like to come by boat - you dock at the Gainsville Marina behind the gas docks then walk up. If you call them they will come down in a large golf cart and drive you up - but it's only about 100 yds. walk. But you can also drive in - just tell the guard at the entrance to Gainsville Marina that you're going to Skogies. We also come in by boat sometimes in the afternoons and just buy ice cream. On holiday weekends they have live music on a stage they built outside. It's fun to sit and watch Lake Lanier and all the cool boats in Gainsville Marina. read more

Went there for brunch, it was mediocre. I felt bad for the waiters because they were taking the buffet orders and running them back to your table. Even though most employees had a face mask, almost everyone had it off and hanging from one ear. Not very useful at that point! I got the sampler and my husband for the crab and shrimp Alfredo. On my sampler I opted out of the oysters for extra crab balls. I also got cajun grilled grouper, fried shrimp, fried okra and Mac and cheese. I am not a fan of the way they fry their food. Very thin batter and barely fried. Really really soft and it has no flavor at all. So the okra and the shrimp weren't all that great. The crab balls were pretty good. Lots of crab meat. When I substituted the oysters for crab balls I guess they thought I wouldn't realize it, but they threw hush puppies in there instead. They look identical so maybe it was an honest mistake. The grouper was very good though. Cooked just right and the seasoning was good. The Mac and cheese was definitely not good though. Looked and tasted like it had been reheated four times. My husband's Alfredo was pretty good. The sauce was very thick consistency though. Not something I was used to. It would be nice if they added a tad bit of seasoning in it. The shrimp an crab that was in it was very good. The service was great though. The servers were constantly checking on us and the food was brought out in a timely manner. The food is really good, and the atmosphere is certainly "laid back lake"! As for cleanliness? Come on Skogies! You can do better! You already look like a Tijuana picnic with tables scattered across the yard, but you can easily clean and slap some paint here and there! Throw away the junk. It's a regular spot for us, so 4 stars is probably generous, but it could be a GREAT spot with some elbow grease and at least a minimal "give a sheet" attitude. read more

Fun place for a casual dinner on the lake! Tin roofs, bathrooms outside (clean enough!), casual seating inside and out with a nice view of the lake. Service probably lacked just a notch, but no big deal. I had the shrimp po boy, which was probably a 4 out of 5 stars. Husband had the fried grouper which was a solid 5 stars. For appetizers, we had fried grouper bites and fried pickles. Lots of fried stuff, but also burgers, etc. for kids. Hushpuppies were yummy!
