Service probably lacked just a notch, but no big deal. I had the shrimp po boy, which was probably a 4 out of 5 stars. Husband had the fried grouper which was a solid 5 stars. For appetizers, we had fried grouper bites and fried pickles. Lots of fried stuff, but also burgers, etc. for kids. Hushpuppies were yummy! The grouper is awesome but the hushpuppys are from mars they are crispy and yummy and fun all wrapped up in a golf ball size tasty ball of yummyness. You'd think that for $15 a breakfast buffet served on a paper plate might be tasty. You would think wrong. This buffet featured wet and cold scrambled eggs, soggy bacon, cold pancakes, cold french toast, and cold syrup. Add to that the $8 frozen "Margarita" made (apparently) without tequila and the impression is one of a restaurant that just doesn't give a damn about their customers. Message received. Food is just okay. Both times i've been the service has been sub-par. All the plates should come out at once. It's so awkward when one person gets his food and watches it get cold because he doesn't want to eat until everyone has food. The food isn't bad, it's average and should maybe be $2-3 less per plate for what it is. The courtesy dock for the restaurant is SO BAD and on the most shallow portion of the cove so you may want to drive here. The setting is great - it's beautiful to be outside on the porch on a nice night and see the water from way up high. ABSOLUTELY AWFUL EXPERIENCE DO NOT GO HERE, will never ever be going back. Ordered a side salad with my burger and my burger was brought out without the salad, the food runner asked if we were missing anything so I told her the salad. She then proceeded to ask me what kind of salad and I told her and she did a celebratory fist pump and brought it out. Now that's not a bad experience you may say but it's what happens before she brought out the salad that will disgust you to your core. They had made the salad a little before our food was ready and tried to take it out to a lady but she no longer wanted the salad, they then proceeded to take the salad back to the food station and the waitresses snacked on the items from the salad with their bare hands. Is that the same salad she fist pumped for in celebration that they didn't have to have the whole salad wasted and they could bring that to me? If you said yes then you are correct! This waitress/food runner was also seen cutting up items in the back then licking her fingers and then going right back to cutting. She was also spotted grabbing something out of the dumpster before she went back to the kitchen to do the previously mentioned. After we told our waitress what happened she went back to gossip with the other girls about us so we got our checks and left. When we were leaving all the waitresses could be seen out back smoking their cigarettes and drinking beers talking about us as we could hear them mention us and the situation that just occurred. So it's safe to say they lost our business due to health issues and poor service and it's awful cause it was a close boat ride for us. read more

Skogies is a great place to go after a day out on the water. They have kicked it up a notch by adding servers, more boat slips and even a nice guy that came and picked us up at the dock on a golf cart. Tonight was the only time I've ever gone and not been 100% pleased. I've had enough good times there that I'm not going to stop going just cuz we had an inept server. If it continues, then maybe my opinion will change, but I hope it's an isolated incident. Side-note: The fish tacos were awesome but DON'T order the shrimp scampi. read more

I just don't get it. This place is a great idea, just boat up and eat and have a beer. But the "eat" part is really really bad. After four meals there, we're about ready to give up. Flavorless: meatloaf, blackened grouper (can't they put some sort of sauce with it?), garlic mashed potatoes; over cooked mac and cheese; mushy New England clam chowder (really weird texture, actually); over-salty fish dip. We have also taken out of town guests on a few occasions and we all agree the food is very good for a casual lake spot. Once upon a time 5-7 years ago Skogie's was terrific. Then new management came and watered down the quality and added cheap crooner-type entertainment (aimed at taking your mind off the quality for sure). Years later I found myself eating breakfast there. Weak food. Extra large decent tasting biscuits, but the cheese grits were as cheap and pointless as it gets. Are we in the south? Hash browns were half-way brown half-way cooked with a smattering of what seemed to be tomatoes and peppers (why I know this is I had very little in my potatoes, but my wife had a 50/50 mix of potatoes and veggies). sausage gravy was passable, but nothing could be called "very good". look at it this way, you'll get a better breakfast at the Waffle House than Skogie's. read more

We came here by boat on the 4th of July, and it was a great summertime meal. My family comes often, but this was my first trip, and I loved it. We started with yummy hush puppies and perfect fried green tomatoes. I had the cajun group sandwich with sweet potato chips and my sister's corn on the cob. The fish was delicious and the corn was bright and fresh. The chips were too sweet for my taste, but still pretty good. My tiny sister got an order of tiny corndogs, which were delicious and amusing. In the interest of full disclosure...I live on Lake Lanier and there is nothing more fun than having a destination when you hop n your boat and take off. So when I rate Skogies a 4 star it may get a half a star more that it deserves for this reason. Here's the scoop. The Atmosphere (yes, CAPITALIZED) because it is great. Skogies is located in the middle of Gainesville Marina on Lake Lanier atop a nice knoll over looking a cove and marina on the Lake. It is not a fantastic view but it is very relaxing and different. There is something fantastic about the "Marina Life" and being around boats. You are likely to consume one extra adult beverage just by being here. ***Oh, important point: It is BYOB at Skogies. So just bring anything that you want to drink with you!!! We always sit outdoors at one of the tables although there is a big screened in porch to enjoy. I went for dinner and then for brunch at Memorial Day. The food is beachy with a seafood theme although they do have chicken fingers, burgers, shrimp, great seafood chowder, etc. I would recommend the grouper po-boy or the fish tacos. The brunch is good to where we had the egg sandwich for only $4.99 and the eggs benedict. Great place to bring the young kids because they can run around outside and not bother a soul. The service was OK by a nice young waitress staff but both times we had confusion on our bill. No biggie, all worked out but when you are relaxed and you are ready to leave...you are ready to leave. I would recommend Scogies for its great atmosphere and its food. If you can catch the live 2 man band and enjoy a few old rock songs...I actually would give it a 4.5! We have been to Skogie's before about three years ago. We visited with family for a late lunch hoping we would avoid the church crowd. The waiter was polite upon arrival and we found a booth right away. I am assuming our waitress was fairly new as we had to ask multiple times for more ice, silverware and drink refills. I was disappointed to find "Asian grouper" on the menu. It is also known as tra, is farmed in Vietnam and is listed as one of the "dirty dozen" by foodandwaterwatch.org. I had the chicken salad and my table mates all had chicken sandwiches. The fries were cooked perfectly and the sandwiches were hot and tasty. My salad was wilted and appeared to have been sitting under the heat lamp for a while. The kitchen was very slow, our food came out about one hour after we ordered. Had my first Skogies visit this weekend. I could not have been more pleased! First off, any place you can get to by boat is A-OK in my book. The wait staff was super friendly, and we were able to get a table right away. Our server was very attentive and was even more than happy to bring a bowl of water for our furry friend (yes, they are pet friendly in the outdoor area). The food was excellent. Portions were very generous. There was some pink sauce on the table that I found to be darn near addictive. In reading other reviews, I found that it is BYOB, which makes me love them even more. Side note: restroom facilities are marina-owned, and could be more private/clean, but that is just an fyi - not a negative toward Skogies. read more

This was my third visit and my wife and I love the long boat ride to get there. We were there this past Saturday, the other two times were for brunch on a Sunday, which was excellent. What a find! We came here at the request of a friend for her birthday brunch. The service was outstanding, but not at all pushy. The food was to die for...best shrimp po boy I have ever had and the blue cheese slaw...well, yum, yum!! The prices are very reasonable and the portions are quite large so you get a lot for your money. Can't believe it's close to home and we have never eaten here. Never even knew this place existed. Well, we do now and we will be back often. Suggestion for anyone who hasn't eaten here before...it gets busy busy very fast so come early on the weekend. Usually love their food. Big fan of the Crab Cake BLT. My sandwich was up to par but I wouldn't say the same for anything else. Considering we were the only customers there for lunch, I thought the food would be excellent but I was wrong. The meatloaf tasted worse than a microwaveable meal, no sauce, dry tough chunk of imitation meat. And the crab dip was all liquid with no flavor. When I mentioned it to the waitress she agreed it was watered down today but didn't do anything about it. All n all... I was beyond embarrassed that I brought my (out of town) family there. Rather than spending money on more chairs and tables, they need to invest in better chefs and servers. read more

I'm only giving them one star because half a star is not an option. The food is awful and their restrooms are just a step up from an outhouse. We had the grouper finger appetizer and shrimp and grits with steamed broccoli as a side. The grouper was ok but the shrimp were over seasoned and over cooked. The grits were awful. They were mushy, watery and bland. The broccoli was ok. This place was definitely not worth the time it took to find it. It's hidden in a marina. read more
