    Pelmeni and vareniki
    Claudine R.

If you like Russian food, this is definitely a good place to start when in Brighton Beach. This is my second time here. There were 5 of us and had a wonderful meal. We mostly ate appetizers since we wanted to try other places as well. We enjoyed the pelmeni, vareniki, potatoes with mushrooms, blintzes with red caviar, lamb kebabs, smoked mackerel with potatoes, and the pickled fruits and veggies. It was unique and I unexpectedly liked it. With that said, I'm already thinking of going back in 2 weeks. Russian food for me is a great comfort food, especially the dumplings that feel like a warm hug on a cold and rainy day. Why not 5 stars?? I think the dishes were way overpriced with the food ratio.

First off, I would be lying if I didn't say that I wasn't compelled to go to the restaurant because of the giant bear statue that they have out front. I mean where in New York City are you going to find anything like that. That being said, it was overall a good dining experience at an authentic Russian restaurant in Brighton Beach when I had dinner there. The service was very friendly and attentive. I initially was going to order the iced tea, but the gentlemen recommended I get the compote and it was tasty. We ordered the lamb pelmeni, beef kebabs, salmon kebabs, and caviar with crepes. All were very good, especially, the kebabs. I will say that compared to other places in the neighborhood, the bread was a bit underwhelming but other than that it was an enjoyable dinner. Like other reviewers have said, the music can be a bit loud, which is why we opted to sit closer towards the entrance. If you're looking for authentic Central Asian or Eastern European cuisine, I would definitely recommend going to Brighton Beach and I would definitely recommend checking out of Skovorodka.

Really good and reasonably priced Russian restaurant in Brighton beach. The pelmeni were definitely fresh as they were 10x better than the frozen pelmeni I bought and cooked at home from Tashkent next door. We didn't try any soups, but we got lamb shashlik (Russian / Georgian version of kebab) and it was perfectly cooked and the sauce was a nice addition. They had several types of decaf hot tea which was appreciated. Will definitely be back when my babushka comes to visit me in NY :)

Famous Russian friendliness and hospitality, experienced first hand.

Great place to experience famous Russian friendliness, hospitality, and quality of customer service. We didn't get to taste any food but we did learn a few Russian choice words and phrases. So we give them 2 stars.

Great spot to go to if you are in the area. Stopped by for blintzes, pierogi, and crepe with caviar and they did not disappoint. The crepe dough + cheese filling was definitely sweet so keep this in mind when ordering. Traditional restaurant that I am eager to visit again and try more menu offerings next time I am in the area!

The restaurant is nicely decorated. Food was okay, a bit bland (needed some salt and black pepper). I think plating does the food injustice because the plates are huge so the food portion looks little and skimped. If they had smaller plates and had a nicer plating it would help the presentation. People eat with their eyes first, so seeing what I got kind of turned me a little away.

Chicken stroganoff. Would recommend over the steak. Better deal.

Short review: Highly recommend the dumplings and the chicken stroganoff of all things. I decided to upload a modern menu as well it hasn't been updated on yelp for years. Otherwise, this review is from back back in April (sorry for taking so long.) We had a mix of food from this Russian/ Ukrainian spot. Our waiter was nice. For drinks they had Baltika (which I had) along with Georgian wine and some other wines along with liqueurs. As we ordered a lot, I'll be listing them below by section. Appetizers/salads: Herring with potatoes: Nice garlicky potatoes. Vareniki with potatoes & sautéed onions: Very good version. Nice dumpling texture. Siberian Pelmeni- Traditional boiled dumplings with meat: I preferred this over the other dumplings even though both were excellent. Meaty and delicious: Avocado salad: Nice fresh avocado. Had some tomato as well. Salad "Kavkaz- Pickles, veggies, feta cheese, and cured beef (basturma.) Very uhh Russian/Eastern European salad. Tasty though a ton of pickles. Mains (most came with a side which I am listing after with brackets.) Beef stroganoff (mashed potatoes:) There wasn't that much beef but it was tender. Very rich but I preferred the chicken version. The chicken version was a lot cheaper (I believe $9) and the sauce made the dish more than the actual meat. Pan-fried calf liver w/caramelized onions (home fries:) Very tasty not overly cooked liver with not so much breading. Home fries were fine. Wiener schnitzel (pan-fried veggies:) Also quite good. Nice light fry again. The veggies consisted of roasted pepper and cauliflower which was unexpected and quite good also. Grilled salmon w/spinach sauce (pan-fried veggies:) We got this as a lighter dish but I'm not that big of a fan of salmon usually. The spinach sauce was light. Alright. Desserts: Crepes with fresh apple filling: They weren't that big but the filling was tasty. There was also a bit of chocolate sauce. Apple strudel with ice cream: Massive strudel. The apples could have used a bit more flavor but it was fine especially for the price. Vareniki w/cherries: Disappointing. Needed more sour cherry and these unlike the other dumplings were gummy. Outside of the desserts being just alright (gives a reasoning to go to Tashkent instead which isn't a bad thing,) the rest of the food was quite tasty. Nice staff as well. No real complaints. It's just generic tasty Russian food.

I'm on the fence about this place. The service was ok. The music was ok, good enough for older crowd . Good was not bad but portions were small and prices were way too high for those portions.

We enjoyed our lunch at this place! The pan fried potatoes and the Kharcho soup were delicious, the chicken borscht was okay, nothing special. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted warmly. We were helped with our choice and served well. Ambiance was calm and cozy. Nice place to have lunch/dinner imo.

I really wanted to try Russian and Ukrainian cuisine while visiting Brighton Beach during a recent stay in New York City, and Skovorodka definitely fit the bill. It is a short walk from the Brighton Beach Avenue Q train stop. Just look for the brown bear statue positioned in front of the cafe. Skovorodka is one of the few places in the NYC metropolitan area where one can try Russian beer like Baltika or Russian vodka. Got a chance to try the borscht, which was delicious. My first experience with Russian cuisine many years ago was with pelmeni served at a dinner party. I had my heart set on trying pelmeni again, but after seeing photos of the delicious red caviar and crepes, I ordered that with a plate of mashed potatoes. Loved the decor at Skovorodka, and enjoyed sipping from a glass of Baltika. P.S. the borscht at Skovorodka, heavy emphasis on beets and cabbage, is more on the savory side and is quite good.

Incredible food and ambience like walking into a local place in Moscow. Everything we had was fresh & homemade.

Once stepping into the store, you are met with large freezers and fridges stuffed to the brim with all things Ukrainian. Many of their dumpling items are in large packages (2-3lbs a pack) and range from $8-$15 per lb depending on the filling. $15 a pound for their lamb and short rib Pierogis. Price-wise, it's very fair! And you can taste to quality and heart they put into these Pierogis. Can't go wrong with any flavor. I got the lamb and it was stuffed with tender lamb pieces, no filler. And they make for great quick meals! I also snagged a box of cabbage rolls stuffed with a pork and rice filling. Simple home-y flavor and better than rolls I've gotten from restaurants. Just reheat and it's ready to go! $15 for 5 large cabbage rolls was a great deal as well! Would get again. The only thing I wouldn't get again is their soup dumplings, as it was a bit difficult to cook and was a little too doughy near the top of the dumpling. Flavor wise, it was delicious and had a nice broth (assuming you didn't pop them. Only 1 didn't pop). But it was a difficult item to cook right in boiling water, like the instructions mention. Perhaps, user error. Every item is sold by weight and labeled after selecting your items. But they're happy to check the weight/explain price before purchasing.

For $4, I added the bacon/kielbasa/onion topping, which came in a little cup; it's worth it. Both pierogi options were great, but I actually thought the BEC was the star of the show. The egg was not runny and the bacon was chopped very fine; the filling was seasoned well with salt and pepper. My husband really enjoyed the short rib pierogi. Next time, I'll try the potato one. Service was fast and the prices were reasonable. The space is very retro with interesting art on the wall. I had a cup of borscht and an order of dumplings, which were both great. The borscht was something I will crave for a while. The broth just had an incredible, balanced flavor. I thought since my food was pretty warm up and serve, that it would be a quick meal, but the service was pretty slow. I sat and waited a while. It was Mother's Day, so I think they were busier than usual with catering orders and moms and grandmas stopping by for desserts for brunch at home. So the pace of service may have been affected/out of ordinary for that reason. For those visiting for the first time: Take a look at the menu upstairs on the sidewalk before going down to the restaurant, because there was only menu downstairs at the counter where you order, so anyone coming for the first time will have to flip through the menu while holding up the line to order unless they know what they want already. When you go downstairs, the restaurant is behind the first door to your left; it's not well-marked. A lot of reviews say it's cash-only, but that may have been under the prior owners/management, because they definitely took credit cards/Apple Pay when I was there last weekend. If you love Ukrainian food, Streecha is well worth a visit. I love its no frills, classic approach to dining. We wanted to try a little bit of everything so we settled for half a dozen of meat verenyky, a half dozen of potato and cheese verenyky, borscht, and stuffed cabbage. Our favorites of the bunch were the stuffed cabbage and the half dozen potato and cheese verenyky. We only wished everything was hotter because it seemed only the potato verenyky was hot. But as a self-service kitchen that relies on the help of volunteers, it wasn't surprising. Sheep by Barashka (or in other words rather humorously when translated Sheep by Sheep) is an Azerbaijani restaurant (specifically Gorsky) similar to Village Cafe or Baku Palace with the prices on the menu being somewhat in the middle though closer to Baku. Like those spots, you go here and have one of two experiences depending on whether someone speaks Russian/Azeri and whether you're here for a party. It's part of the experience and luckily I was part of the latter. When my part of the group arrived, there were several salads such as an avocado salad with tomato, eggplant salad (basically the same thing as Turkish Soslu patlıcan,) and an Achuchuk salad (tomato and onion based.) There was also herring which was tasty. Soon arriving were some hot appetizers. There were two variations of Kutab/Qutab which is essentially a flatbread either stuffed with meat or with greens with both being outstanding and in my opinion a bit better than the other spots I mentioned. There was also potatoes with mushrooms which was okay (I prefer more of a crisp) as well as Khachapuri or cheese bread which was salty and delicious though perhaps a bit too buttery. The main dishes were the standouts. The sturgeon kabobs were outstanding with very tender flaky fish which paired nicely with the pomegranate molasses/narsharab found commonly in the region as well as another cold sauce which I believe was tomato based. In terms of meat, their specialty is chalahach or in other words baby lamb chops. These were meaty, tender, and some of the best I've ever had. The lulya kabob or ground lamb kebab was also tender and delicious and I would recommend them. The rest of the meat was also good but these were definitely the best. I don't remember having dessert. The food overall here was delicious and I can see why this has become a preference for them. There is apparently live music here but they weren't in that night which I didn't mind as it was easier to talk. Good food (especially the main dishes) and friendly staff. So I ordered kebabs. 10 min later he came again and said they are out of it as well. Like how the waiter can not know what they have?!! Ended up with grilled sturgeon, which came bare on a plate, not even a leaf of green or anything. Wanted to give 3 stars or even 2, but gave it a second chance. Second visit they had everything and it was delicious. Apart from potato kebab, which ended up being just a puree on a stick. Nothing exciting. Food is really good but quite pricey. Especially for the area.

We were walking around in Greenpoint and suddenly the neighborhood turned Polish, which is super…read morebecause I love Polish things...especially stuffed cabbage. I saw a couple pointing and nodding, so I asked, is this place amazing? They said yes. We were sold. We were wanting a drink and conveniently, they had a bar. Polish beer and incredible Polish cabbage on the way to meet friends for dinner at another restaurant? Duh!! Im Jewish - not religious - but it's important because beef/rice is the norm in my world. Karczma makes a pork version which was so so good. Big fat pieces. Thick, perfectly wrapped cabbage. Juicy, flavorful filling. The sauce was bright with tomato flavor. The wagon wheel decor was a curveball, but the warm and comfy vibe in the restaurant is what mattered most. We loved it.

Well, it has been 11 years since I first reviewed this place. Time flies! I have not been here in…read moremaybe 6 years and I can tell you the food is very sad now. I got the schnitzel (breaded chicken cutlet) and it came with a side of coleslaw and mashed potatoes. You used to be able to pick two sides, but anyway... There was zero seasoning in the whole dish. The coleslaw tasty like nothing. It was full of mayo but tasted like nothing. The chicken was super dry and tasted like it had been fried yesterday and then heated in the microwave. The mashed potatoes had an annoying amount of chopped dill on top, but no salt. The biggest sadness came when I tasted the pickle soup. It is a shadow of its former self. It is light on pickles and full of under-cooked potato cubes. It was badder than bad. What is going on here? SAVE YOUR HARD EARNED CASH!

The server was friendly and helpful with my questions on the menu. I got the Bryndzové which is their traditional Pierogi. I got it prepared as recommended, which is boiled and with bacon. It was tasty! The bacon definitely adds a salty bite to mellow out the richness of the pierogi. I was worried the sheep cheese would be too pungent, but it wasn't. The filling I chose only comes as a full order of 9. If you are torn between a couple choices, I would do two half orders of 5. On the side I got their Fresh Cut Fries. These were excellent. I love a fry, and these checked every box for me. They were well salted though. If you have any aversion to salt, I would ask for light salt. Hoping to return again before my Brooklyn trip is over - there's several more I want to try!
