Short recommendations: Liver "Le Cream," Siberian Pelmeni, Spanish-Style Meat As per the name's direct translation, Stolovaya is a Soviet style canteen restaurant. The place has been open for many years, and I had passed by their quirky-looking interior several times prior to going there recently with a group. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the space started quiet, but got decently loud and packed as the night went on. To drink, a few of us had a pitcher of Kompot, which is sour cherry flavored and decently priced at $9 for a pitcher, but way too sweet for my liking. Along with kompot, there are also sodas, water, hard liquor, and beer, with most of the current beers being German imports, including $9 for a giant pour of Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse, which isn't a bad deal at all. In terms of food, I preferred the appetizers. They gave us some dark rye bread and butter to begin. As some of the vareniki were not available, we started with some Siberian Pelmeni, which consisted of 25 pieces of pelmen for the very reasonable $9.95. Along with the obligatory smetana/sour cream, we added some free grilled onions on top, and they were plump and tasty. I guess my only complaint would be that they felt a little bit watery, as perhaps they weren't drained properly, but at the price point and flavor, I can easily forgive that. The star of the night was surprisingly the $14.95 Liver "Le Cream," listed as warm chicken livers over greens. The liver was tender and tasty, and the cream sauce had a nice light mix of spices and herbs, including some horseradish or mustard or something similar for a bit of tang. Along with said liver/cream/greens, the dish also contained toasted sunflower seeds, which added a nice texture. This was excellent. We also ordered the Greek Salad for $9.95, which was different than a typical version in a nice way. Instead of a block of feta, the cheese was grated, which coated the various vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and olives in a delightfully salty mixture. I also liked the lack of lettuce, making it more similar to the traditional horitaki/village salad. My least favorite appetizer was their version of Veal Tongue Salad, or salad "Tashkent" for $8.95. The price was nice, but it lacked flavor compared to some other spots, with Tashkent Supermarket among other spots making much better versions. It was fine, but I would fill up on other dishes. The only other cheaper thing that I wouldn't recommend would be the $7.95 Lamb Kebab. The portion size was fine, but the meat wasn't particularly tender or super flavorful. The side satsebeli/tomato sauce helped, but I would recommend the various nearby Central Asian or Georgian spots for better shashlik instead. It was alright. The rest of the dishes were entrees, so they came with a choice of sides, which included either mashed potatoes, buckwheat, or rice. While I like buckwheat, another person was allergic, and some others dislike it, so my choice was voted out. We mostly got some decent mashed potatoes or some tasty rice, which I believe was cooked in some type of stock as it was very flavorful. They also came with a nice vitamin salad, a crunchy and slightly sour mixture of cabbage, carrots, and peas with some parsley, which helped with the overall richness. First to arrive was the decent $14.95 Filet of Trout. The fish was lightly fried and flaky and came with a nice homemade tartar sauce. This was good. There was also the Chicken "Tabaka" for $17.95, served with a garlic sauce. The chicken was pounded a bit thinner than some other spots and was pretty tender, but I have preferred some other places. I did like the skin, though. There was also an alright $16.95 Beef Stroganoff, served in a bread bowl. The portion was large, and the beef was tender, but there weren't that many mushrooms. I also preferred the flavor from some other places, such as Skovorodka. This was good, but not amazing. Last and best was the "Spanish-Style Meat" for $17.95. This had 3 relatively large pieces of beef, which I believe was skirt steak. The beef was cooked wonderfully, and there was some great flavor and grill marks. There was a relative chew, but not too much. This was excellent and a surprising final highlight. Another person got a coffee and some tiramisu, as they don't have any Russian dessert options like napoleon or smetanik. He seemed to like both. We overall had a good meal. It wasn't my favorite spot serving this food, but I would go back and get more of the dishes we loved. read more

Eastern European diner with a home style menu and excellent prices. Open daily from noon until 10. Pretty extensive menu with variety of salads, appetizers, meats, seafood, soups, dumplings, blintzes, and more. They had three beers on draft - a dark lager, a weissbier, and Stella. Vodka sold by the mL and served in a decanter. We started with herring, pickled vegetables, masked potatoes, and rye bread. All solid across the board. Next we had some soups. I had harcho. Savory and coriander forward. For the main course, we shared chicken tabaka, Siberian pelmeni, veal pelmeni, and potato vareniki. Chicken was juicy, crispy, and generously covered in sautéed garlic. Dumplings were all huge portions. Service was quick and attentive. Pacing of the food was pretty quick too. There was one restroom which was single occupancy and handicap accessible. Prices are cheap and servings are bountiful, not to mention the quick and high quality service. If you don't speak Russian, you can ask for an English menu! I have honestly not had any dish here that I didn't like, but depending on what you are looking for, you can make your selection: - For those looking to be adventurous: go for the assorted pickles. I'm sure you've had pickled cabbage and cucumbers before, but today can be your day to try some pickled grapes, mushrooms, or even ginger! - For those looking for new flavors: try the cheburek - this deep fried dough pastry filled with minced meat may be your new favorite thing to eat - For those looking for classic Soviet/Russian cuisine: go for (1) beef stroganoff (soft and tender meat served in a bread bowl), (2) chicken Kiev (juicy chicken filled with butter that oozes out as you cut into it), (3) any of their soups (borscht is a classic), or (4) pelmeni (dumplings filled with meat of your choosing) Honestly, though, each of their dishes is amazing, so you can't go wrong either way. Hahaha, oh my lord! My friends and I made a trip down to Sheepshead Bay to try out the notorious Russian cuisine. We were not disappointed by this Moscow-style cafeteria. The TVs were all playing Snoop Dogg videos wherein (yes) he was rapping in Russian. The food was delicious too and not that pricey. I ordered many orders of the blintz with meat, even though they were smaller than I expected. Also really enjoyed the German beer they had on tap. Good food & good prices, this place has a family restaurant vibe, they offer dishes I've never seen before and offer weekend specials, unfortunately I couldn't understand the specials because I don't speak Russian and communication with the server was also a bit difficult. Everything we tried was very good, if you don't speak Russian ask for a menu in English they have a few, I would recommend trying the cherry punch by the jar, stroganoff beef it comes inside a giant bread, & the veal pelmeni. I was hungry. I came there at 8:50pm on a Tuesday night. Place isn't exactly "poppin" and I know the kitchen isn't closed because you can see it from the main dining room. They were having a little issue with a customer who's bank said a payment went through meanwhile their CC terminal didn't show the successful payment. I stood there for 5min like "hello?? Can I get a table?" while there was a higher-up female blonde staff member behind the counter and another waiter just standing there seemingly just overseeing the situation. Then another waiter comes up to me like "can I help you?" "yeah you're still open right?" "What would you like?" "To eat." The waiter consults the aforementioned female blonde staff member and she gives the situation attitude and says "ugh let him sit down there by the entrance I don't care anymore" lol lady please don't sound like you're doing me a favor by letting me sit down and order a few dishes. Came here tonight for a commemoration with my family and had the rudest most nastiest elderly waiter I have ever met. It started when he called us the Brighton gossipers ( we are not from Brighton or it's vicinity ) when a bus boy didn't change my mothers plate ( at her request, she wanted to use her current plate ) the elderly waiter insisted the bus boy change the plate immediately or else " all of Brighton will hear how bad our service is". The entire time he was waiting on us, he had sly come backs and rude remarks at us ( we were there mourning not sure why he chose to pick at us) the waiter kept spitting Yiddish phrases to us, not exactly sure why, we are in a Russian restaurant and my family isn't Jewish. At the end the bill was 57$ plus they added $13 tax not sure how that works but the total came out to 70$. I had $12 sticking out of my wallet, the waiter kept coming up to our table asking if we were done, walking away, coming up to check the checkbook to see if we paid, not yet ok I will come back. Finally third time around he comes over to clean the dirty dishes off of the table and says," wow $12 , I haven't seen that in my 22 years of working in America". I would never come here again. Now for the food : Compot- 10/10 Beef stroganoff - 3/10 Vareniki with cheese - 10/10 Vareniki with cherries- 6/10 If not for the service, I'd give them another try, but unfortunately not in this lifetime. This has been a much loved place. The food and service was amazing. With years it has become worse and worse. Prices increased and portions became smaller. Service is not always the best. But been returning since even with B rating food was good. Sadly the last time we found unwelcome friend in the basket. When told about it , the server was taken away and nothing was done. There are flies around. But it was even worse to find one in the bread basket after eating from it. I hope they take care of this issue. read more

This is my go to Russian dining spot. The atmosphere feels quaint with some throwbacks to the Soviet Union in the decorations and you are serviced by very polite Russians. The prices of the food have always been below the average Russian restaurant. And the food here is great quality. I usually get the chicken tabaka because of how succulent and garlicy they make it here. I've recently tried the pork schnitzel and it was amazing. The egg pairs so perfectly with the crunchiness. In addition the Spanish meat might seem like a name of an entree with not much information about it, but it is sooo worth trying because it tastes like beef kebab. For garlic lovers, the shrimp with garlic sauce is really impressive. The shrimp is so huge and there is a lot of fresh garlic. Also the tap beer is larger than expected for its price.
