My dad loves coming here and I don't mind joining him when he chooses this as his brunch pick. I'm typically not a diner person but will give them a shot if someone recommends it. I came in on a Sunday afternoon with him and we were quickly seated the service was all right..... nothing out of the norm but I wouldn't say it was bad at all. The menu has some good choices to choose from and the selection was good enough that you won't feel desperate to make a decision. I ended up ordering the California turkey burger with no bun. It was pretty good , but it seemed to be missing that special *something* to make it memorable. Went on a Saturday night and when walking in the place was empty and smelled like moth balls or some type of cleaning product. We were seated right away. We noticed immediately the music that was in the realm of rap music. Not dinner music. We even commented on it and our server said he just tunes it out in his head. I'd learn to build a time machine to undo this mistake! Used to love this place years ago, visited for the first time in a while and what a mistake. Reheated potatoes, bland eggs, burnt "organic" toast and the weirdest tasting sausage I've ever had. Not flavor, but texture, it was weird. We went to the Skylark diner for dinner. I got the French toast with fresh berries and my friend got the margharita pizza! The French toast was thick and fluffy, perfect with some butter and syrup. The fresh blueberries and strawberries were the cherry on top. This time around I did not get a smoothie, but I did try the orange juice which was just as good. I like how extensive the Skylark menu is, they have a variety of different foods to try. From teriyaki glazed salmon to chocolate chip pancakes. I also appreciate how they have breakfast all day! The service was good as well. Our server was very nice and recommended us different plates to try, which we kept note of for the next visit. I liked the retro atmosphere of the diner and how colorful it is. The booth seats were also very comfortable as well. Although we did not get drinks, we were stunned by the giant bar in the middle. The flashy neon lights during the evening were pretty as well. Overall, I loved the kitschy architecture of the diner. The outside sign is one of my personal favorites! read more

I arrived at the Skylark diner around 4 pm on a cloudy Thursday. At first glance the diner had an interesting retro design that I thought was unique. I entered with a few of my friends and we were warmly greeted by one of the waitresses. She politely asked us if we wanted to sit at a booth or counter to which we asked for a booth and after being sat down we were given a few minutes to make our orders. I decided on the sky blue burger with fries as it seemed like an interesting choice consisting of onions, blue cheese and chipotle mayo. However even though the diner was pretty empty at the time it still took a while for the food to arrive. The burger was amazing and the fries were extremely fresh. Overall, the experience was nice and I will definitely be returning some time soon. read more

The food and drinks here were great. The prices for the area were reasonable. I definitely plan to visit again despite their need to do a deep clean. The bar area had gnats flying around. I appreciated that the server was using several cleaning products to clean the drains below the beer taps but the vents were covered and the bathroom was disgusting. I'm not sure why I went back... the gnats grew larger, one even took a swim in my drink. I was hoping they had cleaned up a bit but I was wrong. We stayed and tried to enjoy ourselves. The nachos were flavorful (for non-fresh items) but greasy, the quesadilla was good, and drinks were strong, once big free (that's why I go back‍) They need to close down and do a deep clean. On November 29, 2023 I visited the Skylark Diner at around 10am for breakfast with my family. The Skylark Diner sits right off of Rt.1 where it has a sizable parking lot where we parked. The architecture of the diner resembles a lot of features of postmodern retro remodels with a vestibule in front, tall and garish facade, and a lounge. The cost was a little bit more on the expensive side with our bill totaling to around $90 for four people but the portions were pretty generous and the menu seemed to be of a higher quality than most places. The diner was very clean and stylish and the service was excellent. I ordered apple French toast but when they brought out banana French toast instead the waitress offered to make it up to me by bringing an extra side of bacon free of charge so that I wouldn't have to wait for another meal. Our total stay lasted around an hour and we were seated immediately, our orders were taken promptly, and our food came out in a respectable amount of time. The apple French toast I ordered was part of an autumn special menu that lasts through the latter part of November that includes many other special menu items. Overall, the Skylark Diner had tasty food and a hospitable atmosphere and I would definitely visit it again. read more

I've been here a couple times before and have always enjoyed my time and meals here, but this time it was very disappointing. I had the crispy French toast a few months ago and I was very happy with it, but this time is was terrible. They use thick bread, which is good, but they didn't soak it in the egg batter and the inside was just dry bread - see picture below. The diner decor has also gone downhill. It was 9am breakfast on a Monday so it was fairly empty and they sat us as a filthy booth. Granted my father and brother were about to go paint and help with renovations so they were wearing older clothes with some paint stains on them, but I was in a dress to head to work later. I know we were dressed a bit oddly, but did you really have to seat us at a dirty booth? See picture attached Server was average - heard me discussing my displeasure with my family but never asked if everything was ok, just brought me more maple syrup even though I didn't request it. I was hesitant to call him over and explain my bad French toast, was hungry ate about half and just wanted to get to work. Skylark is in some ways the embodiment of the New Jersey diner experience and in other ways a subversion of it. The veritable army of bustling blue-clad servers and the large menu are hallmarks of Garden State eateries of this sort, but the elevated cuisine and elevated prices set Skylark apart. There exist both better and worse (and certainly cheaper) diners aplenty, but Skylark's international focus sets it apart. Like many Jersey diners, the exterior and parts of the décor seem like they haven't changed since JFK roamed the White House. But Skylark plays retro-futuristic to its competitors' retro, sporting a look that would be right at home in The Jetsons. Seating is plentiful, which is a plus given that this place gets quite busy. Despite the eatery's reputation, Skylark does offer a number of diner staples. You can still get a cheeseburger, a Greek salad, an omelet, and a BLT here. However, it just so happens that you can also get tuna tostadas, lobster mac and cheese, a salmon kale-quinoa salad, a bulgogi pork chop, and Guinness-braised short ribs as well. While this may seem like a lot of posturing - and while Skylark isn't going to beat out steakhouses and good Asian joints - the concept wouldn't have worked for as long as it has if the kitchen didn't have a clue. Among these myriad options, our group settled on a baked spinach, artichoke, and cheese dip, an Argentine baguette (sirloin, onions, and lettuce with a chimichurri sauce), and a Basque breakfast sandwich (chorizo, egg, manchego, and piperade on ciabatta). The food was a bit uneven. In the plus column, the dip was warm and satisfying, the meats were not overdone, and both sandwiches were bursting with flavor - the chimichurri sauce was a very nice touch. In the minus column, the Basque sandwich was a bit dry, a side of Mediterranean chickpea salad was disappointingly bland, and a side of fruit salad included some questionable-looking grapes (which, to Skylark's credit, were replaced). Skylark sports elevated prices to match its elevated cuisine, but even then, it isn't exactly thievery. Our dip ran $9 and the sandwiches (with one side apiece) were $11and $9 respectively. Servers are polite and professional though they seemed hard-pressed to keep up with the restaurant's busyness at times, and the wait for food reflected that volume. Not Your Ordinary Diner is Skylark's motto, and it fits. The ambitious menu outclasses other diners by far and the food delivers on flavor. However, uneven execution and immodest pricing keep Skylark from soaring high. read more

So I was in a mood to try different foods today and found out about Skylark Diner. This diner immediately caught my eye and went there to try it. I went around 2 pm on a Tuesday and it was fairly empty. When walking in I was greeted by someone at the center table, kind of like a circular island, and was led to my table. The service was good and can fairly say I enjoyed my experience. I felt like I was in a different world when seeing the windows and the Googie-like architecture within the place. As for the food, I ordered waffles with strawberries. VERY GOOD. I also took advantage of their takeout option and got a coffee to go. The food was very fresh and very calm atmosphere. Not too busy like I said earlier but I can see this place operating at peak hours. There's also a theme night apparently and a lounge for people to BYOB and hang out. Very cool place. read more

I love this place but I just have a complaint about the discrimination against tea drinkers. You can have as much coffee as you want but I can only get one tea bag and as much hot water as I want. They even charge more. Same thing at most places. For a small, medium or large tea, you only get one tea bag. Basically, you are paying for more hot water! We came here on our first date 10 years ago. We had our post wedding brunch here 7 years ago. We make a point to come here at least on these anniversaries. A lot has changed over the last 10 years. The look and feel has always been spot on, an upscale Jersey diner, and the menu has generally reflected that. Since the pandemic they have streamlined the menu, particularly on the lunch/diner side of things, and my favorite breakfast item (the turkey hash) has been taken off the menu as well. We went tonight to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Service was fast and friendly. We weren't in a drinking mood, so we each had an Arnold Palmer, which were made as requested with unsweetened iced tea. We shared the fried calamari for an appetizer, it came out hot and crispy and the dipping sauce was flavorful. For our entrees I had salmon and the wife has the steak. The steak was cooked to the requested temperature and was tasty, with a generous portion of herbed butter on top. The combination of side was an eclectic mix of carrots, fingerling potatoes, green beans, and olives, needless to say my wife was not a huge fan of it. My salmon was cooked well, but a bit salty. My sides were also a strange mix of sweet potatoes, corn, farro, tomatoes, snap peas (that did not have the string removed) and pickled Fresno peppers. Uh, no. This diner puts Jersey diners to shame. We met one set of our parents here yesterday afternoon for lunch. It was not busy and they had plenty of people on the floor, yet service was ridiculously slow and vaguely incompetent. Why does it take 10-15 minutes to bring out a beer and apple juice? The apps the folks ordered were kind of OK; the calamari was crispyish, but the Mediterranean flatbread had a stale crust that was impossible to cut through. The healthy start breakfast had a beyond bland omelet and three shriveled up sausages that looked like, well, use your imagination. The city grill sandwich was awful: stale bacon, horrible pastrami, and soggy AF. The parental' dishes looked OK (one grilled chicken sandwich and one fried one), so we possibly just ordered wrong. Fries were a B. We would have landed on three stars even with the terrible service, but then our daughter's ice cream sundae came out. First, she ordered vanilla and chocolate, but ended up with strawberry and chocolate. And the ice cream seriously tasted like frozen air infused with artificial flavor. First, the greeter was socializing at the empty counter which meant we had to yell across the room and our voices landed on the bare walls. Once we all were seated and ordered our beverages... I never received mine after reminding her twiceFast forward to the food arriving, which was disappointing. The most straightforward items were botched. I ordered Margherita pizza. The presentation looked good, but it really could have been served much hotter. The Cesar salad was the best The chicken breast sandwiches seemed to be eatable, even though it was kind of overcooked. The chicken pot pie would have been better prepared by a preschooler. The ‍ chef covered the top of a small dish with a piece of pizza dough! I mean, really. I suggest taking it off the menu.
