We also had their tri tip sandwich sang their tri tip burrito, I think I'll favor the burrito more because I didn't want to keep dipping. Corn dog was the best I've ever had (would seriously come back just for this). Fries were good. Staff was nice. The not so good: the wait time was excessive for no other orders between when we ordered and getting our food (10+ minutes). I thought the prices were a bit high for what you got. The biggest let down was the chowder...great taste but 90% of it was potatoes. The onion rings are breaded (picture on menus shows battered). Seating is rustic, very rustic. No shade/covers. Sand is everywhere. All seating is bar-height stools. If you're staying nearby, I highly recommend taking it back to your lodging. Would I return? Probably just for the corn dog. read more

Honestly didn't expect much from this place. Got the chicken tenders and fries. The chicken tenders were absolutely perfect. They were fresh and juicy and tasted great. My friend got a corndog for 8 bucks and at first it looked like a rip off but when we got them they werent your average corn dogs. These things were pretty much a costco hotdog turned corndog. I'm not a huge fan of the super thick, floury chowder that a lot of places serve; Slappy's version achieves a perfect balance - not too thick, but creamy enough for folks looking for a substantial soup. It was also expertly seasoned, with enough herbs and pepper and salt to make it interesting without overwhelming the clam flavor. I really must have caught this place on an off day. My fish tacos were supposed to be with fried fish (I asked the woman at the counter specifically and she said absolutely) but they came with grilled fish, and instead of being served with onion rings like the menu said they came with curly fries. The tacos were unfortunately bland and there was way too much onion. Even after letting most of it fall off, there was still an overpowering onion flavor. The real miss of the day was the chowder. In addition to being bland like the tacos, it just wasn't done yet. There was separated starch chunks in it, the potatoes were still crunchy, and in the three bites I tried there was sandy grit in each one meaning the clams weren't properly cleaned. I could see how if this recipe were executed well that it would be good chowder, but it was not. It was very very bad. They don't have a phone number up, so you can't call if something goes wrong. I'm going to go head back and politely ask for the money back on my soup. The tacos are what they are and I already ate them. But this experience was so bad it made me open up Yelp and leave a review right away. UPDATE: It turns out the lady working there was not good at communicating that she didn't understand english. In my best attempt at Spanish I told her "I don't know if you don't understand me" and while she gave me my money back for the soup, she was otherwise dismissive and never apologized. My family and I went offroading in the dunes one day and hung out on the beach another. Both fays we ended up grabbing dinner from slappys. Portion of food was more than enough. We ordered the tri tip sandwich, fish n chips, shrimp n chips and clam chowder. First day we ordered and ate on the beach in the back of our gladiator. Second day we ate on the beach again, but inside the gladiator while I aired up our tires. Did not get a picture of tri tip sandwich. Was too good to stop for a picture. Smoked tri tip, you can taste the smokiness. We also ordered a side of onion rings, all were very good. There were much more that we wanted to try. It'll have to wait til our next trip. I don't know about anything else on this menu but I just had the best soft serve cone I have ever had in my life. I walked up feeling blue, one of those days. I had driven a half hour to Oceano Beach, not realizing that the space in nature that I had chosen to pray at and stare at the waves was for vehicles, not wanderers. It was a great location for all those families who wanted to pop open their trunks and be loud and grill hot dogs all day. But not so much for quiet me who just wanted to relax and think. It was amusing, but not ultimately peaceful. As I trekked for blocks back to a car that I didn't realize I could have parked on the beach for five bones, I saw this shack. I started to walk past, having not woken up in the morning craving a cone but I saw it on the poster, next to their sandwiches and such. That swirly, icy confection - something about it said, "comfort." Someone in front of me had the same idea and had ordered two. They were colossal, so when I stepped up, I asked for less ice cream. The server looked at me, confused, and said something to another worker, who looked slightly askance. The server came back to me and said, "How about I put it in a cup, so you can have both?" Where do you offer to give a business a break and they choose to indulge you anyways? Maybe when you look sad, and seem like you need a little lift. Mission accomplished. That ice cream was so authentically good. Creamy, cold, no artificial aftertaste. The chocolate tasted like chocolate and the vanilla like vanilla. It didn't dissolve into foamy chemicals.
