Big fan of shabu shabu after my recent trip to Japan and I've got to say the sauce and broth here are really reminiscent of what I got to taste in Japan. I noticed most other restaurants use pre-made ones like Kewpie or Kikkoman, so I can really appreciate their efforts to freshly make their own - it reflects in the taste and texture! The plaza that this place is located in doesn't have much to offer, but the quality and taste here is enough to have me coming back for sure! read more

This is my whole family's favorite spot. Every time there's a birthday or occasion to celebrate, we're going to Slice Shabu. The food is incredible and with the hot pot experience, there is extra time to catch up and chat. I highly recommend the spicy miso and the 1855 Ribeye. My mom and I usually order a larger portion to split and it's perfect. Of all the hot pot places I've tried, this is my favorite for the food quality itself. 5/5! read more

I came here with two friends and found parking pretty quickly. The restaurant is located in union market (when you go up the escalators to the left, across from BWW). Once you enter, you go all the way down and it will be on the left hand side in the corner. There was a waiting list but no wait so we got sat down pretty quickly. The vibe was pretty relaxed and not too loud. Our server was Ali?? He was funny and went over how people usually eat the meal since I only had shabu once before and needed some guidance. The service was great and very quick! The lady that was getting our refill and checking in on us was ON IT! As for the food, I got the spicy miso broth with toro beef and it was DELICIOUS! Not too spicy and not too bland. I enjoyed it a lot ! For sauces, I got the spicy garlic (eh wouldn't get again) and the GOMA (I recommend this one) I didn't know what it was but was pleasantly surprised. Babe wanted boba, but he was extremely hungry, so we decided to stop in here since it was close to a boba place. Personally, it's been a few years since I've last stopped into the Union Market in the Kaleidoscope, but boy oh boy, how things have changed. We were quite confused on how to locate Slice, but if you walk past all the empty shops (can literally hear a pin drop here), you'd find Slice in the far back left corner. We arrived right around opening so there wasn't a hostess at the front to greet, but they only had one person managing the entire dining room. She was fabulous by the way! Menus are available by QR code and you go down the list for selection. Choose your meat/protein starting at 4oz, 6oz, 8oz and 12oz. We both decided on 8oz. Babes got the lamb and I got the ribeye. The lamb was a bit tough and dry. The marbled ribeye was the better choice as it was very tender. For broths, only miso or kombu are $0. Everything is else is an extra charge ranging from $1 - $3. We got the free options since we were already spending $30 odd bucks for protein alone. Other things that come with your meal include two choices of dipping sauce, veggies, choice of rice (white or brown), and noodles (ramen, udon, glass noodles). Veggies and rice are unlimited. Glass noodles are $1 extra. We got three rounds of napa (about 3 leaves for refill portion) and an extra bowl of rice. Overall, it was a bit much to be spending $70ish bucks for lunch. We weren't huge fans of how they served all your food in these bento type boxes as it took up so much table space. It was aesthetically pleasing, but once you've cleared all your veggies or meat, it felt cumbersome. Nice to try and we did leave feeling full, but I don't think it was worth it. read more

This is not only a great shabu-shabu place - it's one of the best restaurants in South Orange County IMO. Gotten a bit more expensive but still worth doing on a night out. Walked in at 820pm on a Tuesday. Girls behind the bar instantly started looking at the clock and the TVs at the bar were off. The Ultimate put off was when they started out with "just so you know last call is in 5mins" in a way that gave off they were hoping we'd say nevermind; We were desperately wanting to try this place and we're already aware of the time they closed prior to arrival. As someone also in the service industry we were ready to be respectful of this and get our orders in quick/be out on time. When they were seemingly annoyed once we had said, "that's okay well be quick" and had to run back to the kitchen/ we overheard them yell to pause closing duties we changed our minds purely based on our first interactions and Tha moment. Overall not a great experience welcoming experience or first impression. You would think with a location in a dying shopping mall you'd be open to trying for all the business you can take and focusing on making great first impressions. I had never had Shabu Shabu before but I was pleasantly surprised at our amazing meal. We all ordered the top of the line beef and it comes very thinly sliced (hubby added salmon). You choose a broth and a combination of noodles or rice and it comes with a good assortment of veggies. I love the Sukiyaki broth it is delicious and they have a habanero oil and two drops is plenty! You wait until your chosen broth is boiling and you drop all your veggies and noodles in the broth then you cook your meat and eat it right away. It will blow you away. The meat melts in your mouth! Delicious shabu! Highly recommend! We usually make a reservation as it can get pretty busy, especially on weekends. There's not many people serving the restaurant, but the service is still excellent. There are a lot of customizations, such as choosing the meats, sauces, broth and noodles. The meat is delicious. Highly recommend the chicken broth for the base. The veggies come with unlimited refills and taste good dipped in the sauces they provide. Let me say the food and service were VERY good. Kind staff and high quality meat. I truly want to give this place a 4 or 5 star, however one thing that was sad to see was the health ramifications of eating there. There is zero reason why a restaurant should allow a nearly scolding pot of liquid to be poured into a plastic bowl to eat out of. This leaches and releases dangerous levels of PFAS and other forever chemicals into the food. This is so easily avoidable and comes across as negligent or lazy. I hope they put the same effort into their utensils as they do their service. Easy fix! Customers should be able to enjoy this restaurant without worrying about damaging their hormones. I am a sucker for some good hot pot and this place did not disappoint! This restaurant is located in the Union Market shopping center. You can park in the parking garage and go to the top floor and it's on the opposite side of the elevator. I think the location is great considering you can shop around while you wait for your table or after you eat. We got some drinks at the bar near the restaurant and waited until our table was ready. I will say this place is a bit pricey... but it will fill you up if you order right. I typically eat a "large" plate at other shabu spots so I opted for Combo A where you can choose 2 out of 8 meats but there is also Combo B where you can choose 2 out of 4 premium meats. They both come with 2 sauces, choice of 2 rice/noodles, veggies, and 2 soup bases. It was more than enough food and probably a bit too much lol. The also have an option if you are sharing meat with someone to add a share plate that comes with a pot of broth, 1 sauce, rice/noodles, and veggies. They also offer plates of meat by the oz. Went for lunch with 2 friends. 1st time for all of us. Unfortunately, Union Market was desolate, so sad to see it this way. Such a great venue. Anyhow, the 1 employee was attentive and very helpful explaining everything. I am plant based so he gave me suggestions to order. My friends had different meats and vegetables. Everything was fresh and delicious; the service was great (we were the only ones there sadly) We will definitely come back. It was a fun experience cooking our food while we chatted. We've been here 3 times now. The food is good and the staff is nice. It's a small place but we've never wait long for a table. It's a little on the pricy side compared to other Shabu places I've been to. Also be sure to review your bill. The last time we went it'd was still during happy hour and we ordered a couple of beers. I came here with a friend for dinner. We just happened to come upon it at the Union Market. The Union Market itself is pretty dead, but this place was the most crowded. We got a seat at the car right away. It's a little expensive for shabu, but it was dinner. We both got a 2 protein combo with was about $30. I got the salmon and short rib with miso broth, white rice and udon noodles. Out waiter was really nice, he did make a mistake with our proteins when he first brought out our plates, but he apologized promptly and fixed the mistake quickly. The food was really good, all the meat was a good quality and easy to cook. I like how it was all organized on a platter. I think next time I'll get the short rib and rib eye. My husband and I used to come here all the time when we lived in the area, we moved away then came to visit family this week. We came to eat at this restaurant today, ordered 3 of their large portions of meat, and part way through my meal I noticed something sharp in my mouth while chewing. It was a chunk of steel wool. Luckily I took it out of my mouth before swallowing or i would have had to go to the emergency room. We showed the server, she took it and apologized, and gave us the "employee discount" on our meal which ended up being a whole $12 off... the total bill was $176 after we tipped about $30, since I work in the service industry and understand they survive on tips, i wasn't going to stiff her just because I was angry, but 10 percent off for almost swallowing a piece of steel wool is infuriating. I may be confused about the rules of steel wool in food service, but I thought it wasn't even allowed because of contamination risk, like what happened to me today, and because it holds bacteria, and can't be properly cleaned out. Slice Shabu is one of my favorite shabu spots that has been around OC for awhile. There are 3 locations. This one is in Mission Viejo, at the Kaleidoscope "Mall", located on the 3rd floor at the food hall. The menu is pretty easy to follow, tap to scan the QR code. Tables were wide enough and I love the Bento style set-up. My server's name was Cindy, and she's so sweet and accommodating. She definitely needs high praises here! I ordered the 6 Oz grass-fed rib eye with the tonkastsu broth. Everything from was super fresh! I always have a great time at Slice Shabu! This is an extremely small location, though, so MAKE A RESERVATION! This location is located on the second floor of the mall. There is a large parking garage with plenty of free parking, which is pretty convenient. I went on a Tuesday night thinking that we didn't need a reservation, but there happened to be a few large parties, so there was a bit of a wait. That was my fault! We waited around 30 minutes or so, but the food is always worth the wait. I ordered the pork bone broth with 8 ounces of the basic short rib (not the wagyu). I also got the goma & ponzu sauces, ramen noodles, and white rice. Overall, the food was fantastic. I pride myself on trying new Shabu spots often, but I have yet to find one I like more than Slice. Their goma sauce beats any other one that I've had, I think this is a huge part of why I like Slice the most. Nancy and Diwas both served us, and they were so friendly and upbeat despite being the only servers in an absolutely packed restaurant. They were clearly hustling all night, and I think they did a great job of managing all of the tables and making sure everyone had great service. I went to Slice Shabu with several girlfriends last night. What a disappointment! I ordered a two protein dinner with lamb and shrimp. The shrimp was fine but the lamb was inedible. What is more, it looked like a brown ball of fat and was chewy as well. There was an additional up charge for certain sauces and broths but you were basically boiling your dinner. Very confusing as all items had different cooking times. The noodles were impossible to retrieve from the broth with any of the utensils that we were given. There were little black bugs flying in the restaurant because it was located in an open air food court. The service was good but there was no ambiance as the food court was mostly concrete. My advice....hard pass. read more
