Disappointing, but large selection. This market is a traditional karinderia style (cafeteria) where many dishes a prepared and you select it behind a clear window. The value is quite good considering how much food you get, but as a Filipina, I'm disappointed in the quality and taste of what is provided. Most of it looks good, but everything seems dry, lacking or other. The marinade for the pork/chicken bbq is tasty, however, they are so stingy, much of the meat consists of chewy fat that doesn't break down. Cheap. It also isn't cheap for a stick of bbq. Kaldereta -Stewed meat, usually beef or goat with veggies. Tasty, but once again, the meat has way too much fat, and the meat ratio in the stew is totally not worth it. Adobo - tasty sauce, with the same problem of too much fat, little amounts of meat, and poor quality. Kare-kare - decent, but lacking in flavour, good on the amount of veggies in the sauce. Lumpiang shanghai - dry inside and outside, lacking flavour, like it sat for way too long or overfried. Mind you I have gone when they opened and it was 'fresh ' or newer. Ginataan - Thick coconut stew usually with eggplant, pork, and squash - okay, but the ginataan lacks some flavour. Pancit - Okay, generous portions, sometimes can be dry and I can't describe it, but the taste seems....off. All in all, my experience with cafeteria style Filipino food here in Lake Forest left a lot to be desired and I would rather cook this at home. I can agree the value can be good, particularly if you go on days when there are specialist, but if you get can get past that flavours being lacking and a bit uninteresting. I love Filipino food and am always seeking a warm hug from flavours and dishes I grew up eating. read more

Phil House is inside the Pacific Islands, a Philippino grocery store. It has a large variety of Philippino prepared deli items, meats, and seafood. Very authentic. Like most asian fast food and deli shops, you will find asian stews, whole fish fried to golden, shrimp cooked with head and tail on, all types of skewers and bbq meats, etc. There's always a long line there, especially right around lunchtime or dinner hours. I ordered a couple of skewers but they were too fatty for me. I know most people like some fat on the meat but I do not like it. Phil House is located inside the Island Pacific Market in Lake Forest. They offer casual dining in a turo turo (point point) format. We shared the bbq chicken skewers, that also inc pancit bihon, rice and a side dish. It was a lot of food for $14.99. We couldn't finish it. They also sell Flip faves like lechon kawali, goat and halo halo. There is ample seating, and the staff is super nice & helpful, even if you don't speak Tagalog (like me - LOL). If you drop by the market, it probably makes sense to grab a bite to eat first, so you don't shop while you are hungry. I love the food here. It's exceptional, not greasy, not salty, just incredibly delicious. However, I am very upset with the plastic food containers they use here. They obviously do not attempt to recycle them, and they go right to the landfill where they add to the pollution. Phil House Lake Forest could use commercially available, compostable, paper based, hot food, containers, that do not pollute the landfill. Phil House in Lake Forest has been our new go to place for Filipino food. I have experienced their dine in, take out, and catering services. Favorites: sisig bangus and pancit bihon (half tray has cuts of lechon kawali). Also liked their beef kaldereta, beef steak with onions, and BBQ pork on a stick. So this is your typical grocery attached cafeteria style Filipino "fast food" place. It's part of the allure and experience and the service and ambience would be the best you could expect from such a setup. Food wise, I would say they're above average. Pancit (Bihon and Palabok) seem to be always tasty. We've tried the Lomi, Bicol express, Pakbet (with coconut milk) and we like them. Bbq pork and chicken skewers are solid though the taste is average. Only dish I've tasted which was under seasoned was their crispy pata. We come here to get items to add to our dinner all the time. This is the 2nd time in a matter of days that I've encountered some of the rudest Filipinos ever. Please...if you work in a service industry, try your best not to be rude but courteous to your patrons. Inside of the Island Pacific Market, Phil House is serving up Filipino cuisine; my comfort food, my heritage. I grew up in a household where Filipino food was regularly cooked, and as a child, I didn't appreciate it. My mom would pack up chicken adobo for lunch when I really wanted Lunchables. Years later, I start learning how to cook Filipino food. And in more recent years, I've started searching for good Filipino restaurants. It's not a mainstream cuisine, which makes it considerably difficult to find, but I always keep my eye out for the opportunity to experience that hidden gem. Unfortunately, I have mixed feelings about this place. And with that, let's jump right in. THE FOODS | Filipino cuisine ranging from pork adobo, bistek (beef steak), pancit (noodles typically stir fried), lumpia (egg rolls), etc. I got carried away and decided to sample several dishes... - BBQ Pork Skewer | Firm, but tender inside and juicy. Sweet with a little acidity. Try it! - Bistek | Lemony, salty, tender beef steak (sirloin). The only thing missing are sliced onions to balance out the lemon acidity. I still think this is worth trying out though. - Pancit | Thin vermeclli rice noodles with cabbage, pork, shredded carrots, and fish balls. It's umami and slightly sweet. Recommend ordering this. - Liempo (Grilled Pork Belly) | Pork belly meat with savory flavors. However, the texture is rubbery. - Dinuguan (Pork offal stewed in pig blood) | This is about as weird as I get with food, and it's only because for years, I didn't know what it was. Now that I know, I'm past the blood part, which is boldly flavored with vinegar, various spices, and brown sugar. The meat is inconsistent though; some are tough and dry, others are moist and tender. - Pork Adobo | The sabaw (soup) part is delicious! Sweet, salty, and vinegary. However, the pork is disappointing. Most of it was really tough and rubbery with very few being tender. So, I will say that this place uses chafing dishes to keep food hot for an extended period of time (usually 2-6 hours). It's best to order earlier in the day to increase the likelihood of receiving freshly made food. The longer it sits in heated food pans, the more it ends up drying out the meat. And really, a lot of Filipino dishes can't be quickly cooked; it takes time under low heat to ensure the meat is tender. The best Filipino food I've had is usually cooked at family gatherings or at a restaurant where it's cooked in smaller batches. It's just the nature of the beast. Another eatery inside Island Pacific is Phil House. I was so excited when I first came here. They have so many of the Filipino foods that I've been craving for. I was overjoyed that I bought more than I could eat. I forgot that my kids nor my husband like Filipino food and ended up trashing most of the food I bought. As much as I would like to give this place high ratings, and as much as I've been craving for Filipino food for the longest time, it was so disappointing. Their food is crap! Out of the six items I bought, there was only one I like which was the PAKSIW NA PATA (pig's feet stew). All else were trashed: BBQ PORK STICKS - It was dry, and the flavor wasn't good. I've been here 3 times now. The food is typical of "turo turo" style filipino restaurant. It's good enough. The food is decent but nothing special either. If you need a quick fix of Filipino food is not a bad place to go to. They do have a larger selection of food though, and they do give you more for the price point. I ordered a combo...it came with 2 barbecue sticks, (which most places gives you only 1) a huge container of pancit (instead of rice) and another side order for $16...you definitely can make 2 meals out of it. The service is fast. The ambiance is typical....plenty of places to sit at. This place is located inside Island Pacific Market and has plenty of parking. I came here with some family for lunch. We've been wanting to come to this market for a while and try this place. I got a two item combo of diniguan and sinigang. We did, however, share most of the food that we all got, so it was pretty much family style. My family ordered for me, while I got us a seat. Most menu items here are pre-made and served up right away. Coming here earlier in the day like we did guaranteed that most of the food was very fresh. They only had plates here though and no bowls. So I had to spoon my sinigang, which is usually a soup, over my rice. It had a clean flavor though and there was big pieces of pork and veggies in it. My diniguan was also pretty good. It didn't have too strong of a vinegar or salty taste. It went well with my rice. I also had some lechon, pancit and fried fish. The lechon was crispy and meaty. The pancit noodles were cooked perfectly and flavorful. The fried fish was crispy and fresh. We also got some Halo Halo for dessert and it was delicious, a great way to end a meal here. They shave the ice fresh and assemble the desert right in front of you after you order. We had a really good lunch here, I'll probably come here again when I'm craving some Filipino food. read more

First time to check their food. Halo halo is very good. No hard beans, not too sweet, puff rice topping (pinipig) is very crunchy and the ube ice cream topping is huge(one big scoop). The bakery by the entrance serves empanada. My daughter says it taste very good and homemade (lots of chicken filling). The grocery area is clean and well stocked. One cashier is very nice to my son who did his first unassisted shopping. At the dining area, it seems to be really crowded at lunch time, but we were able to share a table. The dining area became desserted after 2pm. We get to hang out a little longer and enjoy our snack (crispy chicken skin). We will definitely come back. Sorry, Pinoy Pam. This will be our to go area from now on. Why 4 stars ? The server (older guy) by PhilHouse is kind of rude to a customer. New customers like me tends to ask questions a lot. Came here today just to buy empanadas next door (which are amazing by the way). My wife and I were super hungry so we decided to give this place a try. First time here, so we ordered specifically (2) two items. One Item is lumpia shanghai (8 pieces) and pork bbq stick. The other two items my wife ordered squid and beef caldereta. The pinoy cashier wanted to charge me 2 two items & extra charge for the squid and beef caldereta (which I understand bec the choice of meet). But to be charge a full two item and to be charged a full side of 12 pieces of lumpia. I had to try to explain to the rude cashier that Kuya who prepared our food that I specifically wanted just two items for me, exactly why he only put 8 pieces instead of 12. The rude cashier first charge me roughly $35, when i saw the extra charge for 12 pieces of lumpia, he changed it to over $40 and made a smart remark saying it was less before i said something. So just watch out this place will over charge you without even knowing it and most filipinos wont even notice. The cashier continued to argue with me a even caused a scene and a long line behind me. Rather than continuing to argue with the cashier, i simply walked away and brought my business to Pams best, which was a much better decision. Filipino's shouldn't be ripping off their own people. UNSANITARY. We went to this place to check out what they got. If you round the corner by the cash register and you look over the counter, you will see where they prepare the desserts behind the glass case. The place was ABSOLUTELY BUZZING with flies... at least it was when we went there. It's not like one of those cases where a fly (or two) accidentally got in because someone left the door open... there were a LOT of flies. A LOT. They were buzzing around, landing on the food... and the employees walked around oblivious to it. They're gonna' serve this food to people! To make things worse, while we were there staring dumbfounded at the scene... an employee comes by to work on the trash right beside the food... causing an even bigger flurry of buzzing flies going back and forth between the trash and the food. I did not understand why the menu stated $1 added to meat dishes. So was it already added to the listed price or will it be added on checkout? The soup with beef, green beans and potatoes was just salty. There was no beef broth taste in the soup.
