I've been obsessed with shabu and I got to bring my friend here to try it out for the first time. Ordering is very simple, they have steps on how to order your shabu shabu entree. Also, don't be afraid to ask the waiter how much meat comes in their portion. The protein is rationed out in ounces! Step 1: Choose your protein- I usually get the beef belly. It has the right amount of fat and cooks fast. Step 2: Choose your broth- I get a mix of spicy miso and regular miso since I didn't want it to be super spicy. Step 3: Choose 2 sauces- Goma and Ponzu are my fave Step 4: Choose your rice- White rice all the way! Make sure to get the free refill. Step 5: Choose your noodle- Ramen Step 6: EAT!!! You would think you won't get full with the portion size, but by the end of your meal you're going to be stuffed. I always cook my ramen at the end because you have all the flavors from the veggies and meat that was cooking in the broth. Shoutout to our waitress, Christina. I came to this restaurant to celebrate a birthday of a close friend, and was put in a comfortable booth that suited our larger party. After a few minutes of contemplating as well as munching on some tasty gyoza my friends ordered prior to coming, I decided to split a shabu-shabu entree with my friend: picking Sukiyaki as the broth, Wagyu Toro as the protein, and Goma and Ponzu for the sauces. It only took a bit of time for the kitchen to prepare everything, and all our entrees were presented immaculately. For one entree, it was enough to fill two bellies! On top of the delicious food, the staff were all very quick and attentive to our needs, arriving with extra plates and spicy sauce as we requested. Near the end though, service was a bit lax- but it was busy in the restaurant near that time, which makes me a bit more hesitant to place blame on anyone specifically. For it's convenient location and delicious food, I would definitely give this place a try. If you come with your friends, definitely come with less than 8 people! I thought the first time was a fluke but I made the mistake of giving it a second chance and met some friends here... we all had horrible food poisoning and I ended up missing a week of work, I had to go on antibiotics due to it. Slowly making my way through all the eats in the Kaleidoscope Union Market. Slice was next in line and being a particular fan of shabu shabu, I was looking forward to checking them out. I dropped by during their lunch happy hour, so got a nice little discount on my order, not a bad start! They have a "build your own" type of menu, where you get to choose your soup base, type of protein, sauces, and noodles. I opted for the classic kombu and black angus prime ribeye. The meat quality was great, which is why it's a bit pricey. No complaints there. But the cuts were a bit obnoxious for shabu shabu (**see picture). I'm used to smaller pieces of meat that are pretty much bite size and ready to go. These are literally twice and some three times bigger than your typical place. And since it's priced by weight, you're overall getting the same quantity. I wasn't a big fan of the bento box setup either. It was cumbersome as you're trying to use your sauces and not make a big mess. Everything just felt really spread out. Meh. Out of the way but not too hard to find, and totally worth it. Food was spot on and the service was good. We arrived on a weeknight and still had to put our name down on the waitlist, and the staff seemed minimal but sufficient. I imagine this place gets really packed on busy nights. We each ordered the pick-two-meats option and it was a very filling meal. All our portions, sauces, veggies, etc., were neatly served in a bento style box. I loved that the shabu pots were heated on induction tops, which meant that we didn't work up a sweat just sitting next to our respective pots (I'm looking at you, The Melting Pot!). We got the tonkatsu and miso broths and both were tasty. The noodle portions looked a little small but turned out to be just right, given all the other accoutrements provided. We greatly enjoyed our meals and the experience, and laughed at the end of the meal when I finally noticed the ladle and spoon set out for us - we had diligently fished out our noodles from the broth with just our chopsticks. It's in the kaleidoscope at the very top across from the Buffalo Wild Wings in the market place at the very back left. It was hard to find when I first went and I've seen it slowly get busier and busier! Seems like one of the only places that is doing somewhat well in this building. I think everything is great. Their broths are amazing and their sauces are delish! I feel like you get a decent amount of meat for the price. I wish they would let you make reservations and they don't have bok choy or mushrooms which I thought odd and definitely miss when coming here. This was only the second time I've done shabu shabu and discovered I really do like it and wish they had locations near me. Our visit was great from beginning to end starting with a friendly greeting once we walked up. The place was very open, with a lot of natural light from all the windows. Only one other party was in there when we arrived so our server was very attentive to us throughout our visit. The food was brought out quickly and the spicy miso broth added a little extra flavor. Though our visit was great I do have a concern about their ability to stay in business at this location. No one else came in while we were there. We were there around noon on a weekday so that could be the reason there weren't many people there. Hopefully business picks up in the evenings and/or weekends because it would be a loss to the area if they had to close due to lack of business. Shabu is not a fast meal, but it is a great one I had Aaron's review open when I sat down, so I wouldn't be lost. Shabu is not difficult -- it's basically making soup and dipping things in it -- but there are a few steps. Choose your soup base, your meat, your noodles, your sauces. It all cooks on a burner in front of you (conduction heat, so you don't burn yourself). Many thanks to Nina, who was working the bar and room during an odd 3:30pm dinner rush that day, and who took the time to walk me through things. I ended up getting miso base, 6 oz chicken, udon noodles, goma and ponzu sauces. She taught me how to flavor the base w scallions and garlic, adding daikon and scallions to the ponzu to thicken it, adding ground up sesame to soup and ponzu. On the first really cold rainy day this season, I seized the opportunity to come here with my family. It's located in the back of the new Union Market at the Kaleidoscope. If you've never had shabu, you pick your protein and broth, and you get rice and an assortment of veggies to eat with it. Ribeye is the typical choice, but they have seafood, chicken, pork and lamb here too. At dinner, most of the regular portions come with 6 slices and the large has 12. The large is worth it if you're hungry. Their slices are larger than most places. They have a few different ribeye qualities and I chose the 1855 Black Angus Prime Ribeye ($26/ large). It had nice marbling and was more tender than the Premium Black Angus. The Organic Prime Ribeye was a close second to the 1855. I would avoid the scallops, they were fishy tasting and tiny. They ran out of pork bone broth when I was there, so I tried the spicy miso which was pretty spicy. Any broth besides the original kombu is an additional $2-3. Their veggies were fresh and nicely presented. They give chow mein and udon noodles for your soup which is cool. We also shared a plate of Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura ($10). The batter was light and crispy, but greasy. A little pricey for what it is. I would only get it again during their happy hour when it's half off. I enjoyed the food, but the service could use improvement. They may have been understaffed, but everything took longer than it should've. Also, servers at shabu places will normally take the time to explain things to you especially on your first visit, but they didn't give that personal attention here. read more

This place had some fancy sounding meats like wagyu kobe short rib, black angus prime ribeye, wagyu kobe chuck eye, etc etc. Honestly I had no clue what the difference between them all were and I ended up getting the toro (beef belly) so I guess it doesn't matter. Our server also couldn't really tell us the difference and didn't know which was what when served ‍ Anyways, when we first arrived, we wrote our names in the waiting list. There were a lot of people there and indoor dining had become an option. They used plastic dividers inside between tables to enforce social distancing. The wait took maybe 10-15 mins for a table to open up. Server was friendly but seemed annoyed sometimes when assisting my table. Had to share split pot with a person in my party across from me. i got the pork bone broth which was okay. The server gave us the option of adding chili oil to our soup. Beware, that stuff is hella spicy if you want it. If you are sensitive with spicy, one drop might hurt you. The sauces were okay. On their own it might have been mediocre so I mixed my ponzi and spicy garlic and it was pretty good. I really loved their toro. One of my favorite cuts. I could probably inhale it like air. It was nice and fatty and melted in my mouth. The 14 oz toro is a really good deal and affordable compared to the other options. My family's Christmas Eve tradition is to eat at a Japanese restaurant with my Japanese side of the family. The problem is, all the places don't take reservations. Luckily, Slice Shabu did and it wasn't too crowded either! In addition it is much closer to our house than Irvine or Costa Mesa. Seriously, this Shabu Shabu place is legit and delicious. It's located in the back of Union Market at Kaleidoscope. They changed their name about a year ago and I hadn't dined here after they rebranded. But, it was still the same, yummy food! I am obsessed with how they serve you everything in a bento box. It is so organized and keeps everything separated nicely, so you don't have to have like 4 different plates in front of you. Shabu shabu is always pricey, so I don't really care about the price here. Their apps were ok. I really liked their edamame. I know some people just think edamame is edamame, but I know when it's a good one. The chicken karaage was not your traditional Japanese karaage. It looked like chicken strips and was not flavorful at all-I had to douse it in the mayo sauce. The gyoza was greasy and fried; I did not care for it because I like steamed/pan-fried gyoza. I had the 1855 cut-it is marbled and I prefer it over the meats that are more fatty. The price is in between the fatty cut and the least fatty cut. You can't go wrong with this choice. 6 oz. was plenty for me. I ordered the tonkatsu broth (extra chrage) brown rice, and ramen (you can choose udon too). I love the sesame sauce (lighter sauce). It's soooo good and I douse my meat and tofu into it. I was too full to even eat my ramen noodles, and they give you plenty of noodles. I think my rice filled me up first. The presentation of the dish is cute in its bento box styled container but it was not a practical design since you'll be using a bowl to eat most of your foods. Given the limited table space with the stove and this box, this is not ideal for large parties or the bar. The broth was delicious because it had the savory and spicy kick to it. Everything else was meh. The udon serving was tiny which I wasn't expecting. The veggies I got had spots on them? It didn't come off when I scrapped them so I figured it wasn't that it wasn't washed but still slightly unsettling to eat. For a small woman, the 4oz was just enough to make me feel satisfied but not full. If you're any bigger than 5'4'' you'll need more to sustain you. Service: One thing I learned is that since this is inside Union Market lots of people browse all the shops before settling on one so standing at the front of their shop isn't enough to garner their attention.
