The menu had a lot of really good options which made it hard to choose. The sliders had an amazing smoked flavor and were served on fresh bakery buns. The chicken nachos were OK. We enjoyed watching boats come and go while we enjoyed our meal there. Would definitely eat there again. read more

The only reason I gave this establishment a three star and not a 1 is because of the scenery and location. Otherwise the food is gross and sub par. I mean one would think "it's just burgers and fries, how can you miss that up?" Well it can happen! A buddy and I went there tonight for dinner, he had the Prime Rib, which looked and tasted excellent. I had Shrimp which was tasty, however one of my shrimp had a short hair, either from mustache or short beard stuck to the outside. I pointed this out to our waitress (Nicki) she looked pulled out a napkin, I removed it from the shrimp and placed it on the napkin, she folded it over and said it must be from a spice used to season the prime rib and gave the attitude of Oh Well and walked away. Why would a spice from Prime Rib be on deep fried shrimp? We have been there several times this summer with no problems, so what has changed. They were not that busy, and there was not much response from the bar when I went to pay bill, except he was very pleasant and said he would report it. Stopped by on a calm rainy Sunday night looking for good food on our way back to WI. Nonetheless to say, we were pleasantly surprised by this place! Firstly, the location is quite majestic: think big windows, patio area literally on the water...& the river ahhhh! Secondly, the service was very friendly, prompt & personal...just like these lil gems should be expected to be! And lastly...the food! Yummy, homemade, fresh..just tasty! We started with the Grilled Sausage app: gotta try! Tasted like smokey BBQ & served with spicy jelly, cream cheese & bread...oh how that was good! Then, in between the 4 of us, we worked our way through the special of the day: "Chicken, mash potatoes with gravy & corn", "Sirloin with DELICIOUS crispy fries" & the "Beer-battered walleye with 3 jumbo scampi/buttery/naughty shrimp"... Wait staff now carries around an iPad to place your order. ok. they also present the bill to you on an iPad, point out how you can add a tip and then watch as you decide what to do for a tip. NOT OK. This was the third time we have eaten at Slippery's; the first two times we had absolutely no complaints - loved the food, the view and the service. Tonight, a beautiful fall evening, we decided to stop by since we were in the area. They were busy, but we decided, based on our previous experiences, that it was worth the wait. We were very wrong. There were two of us and we had a simple order - beer, water, salad and two baskets. We started to wonder when we saw the party next to us, seated after we put our order in, munching happily for at least five minutes on their salads before our server noticed that we didn't have ours. We shortly received ours, and if that had been the only problem, I wouldn't be writing this review! 40 minutes after we had been seated, we received our baskets (someone other than our server brought them to us). We were pleased with the taste, portions and temperature - no complaints there! We just felt like we were an afterthought the entire time to our server. She stopped by to see that we had received our food (quite some time after, but not a big deal . . . yet). She then stopped by when we were finishing up, and I asked for a box. I saw the empty table near us get a party of six seated, orders taken, and drinks brought as well as all the tables around us get refills, etc, brought to them before she even checked back. We had been sitting, not eating, not drinking, for at least 10-15 minutes. She never refilled my water (I drank my husband's). When she finally stopped back, still without the box, and I said, "We've been done for a long time", all she said was "Well, you see how busy I am" as she waved her hands toward the other tables and walked away. We had been very nice, smiling patrons until that final long wait for the check. We didn't deserve that kind of a comment. If she had even said "I'm sorry" before complaining about her busyness, I also would not be writing this review! We are not monsters, we knew it was busy - we just wanted our patient waiting to be acknowledged. Was it because we were dressed more casually than the other parties around us and had ordered inexpensive food? I had to wonder . . . We smiled and were pleasant as we paid the bill and left a traditional tip, but I vowed to write a review here as I walked out. It will be a while before we visit Slippery's again. read more

I take issue with inconsiderate boaters being allowed to bring their wet dog up into the outdoor dining area while customers are trying to enjoy dinner.......and then being allowed to stay with the wet dog in the outdoor patio bar. Seems to be more than a one time occurrence as I've been told. There are much more considerate owners and better places to spend money on a meal in the area. read more

This is probably the worst restaurant we've been to in a very long time. Talk about filthy and so outdated! It could use a major facelift and cleaning! Now the service; absolutely the most unfriendly staff I've ever encountered! Of course, the food was so bland my dog wouldn't even eat the leftovers. The fries came out in a clump of mush! The fish tacos had no flavor what so ever and tasted like a mouth full of grease! The burger looked like a blackened hockey puck! I don't even want to give this place 1 star!! Go elsewhere if you have a chance!!!! All it has is the view of the water and that is why it will get a 1 star rating! read more

Just recently got a cabin in the Wabasha area and was in search of a place that wasn't fast food that I could place a to-go order from since I had my dog with me. Called them on a Saturday and they completely refused to take a to-go order. Said they don't do them on the weekends because they're too busy. Well I can understand refusing if you're busy at that time but just not taking them period?? I questioned leaving them a negative review at that time but figured, whatever, it's a holiday weekend, and I'll be back in town plenty more times during the week where ordering to go should not be a problem. Fast forward a few weeks later and I'm in town on a Friday thinking a to go order shouldn't be a problem since I was told they just don't do them on weekends! Wrong! A very rude guy answered the phone and said that they don't do to go orders on weekends. Surprised by this, I stated that today was Friday and not a weekend and he proceeds to try to argue with me about how Friday was apparently a weekend and said very rudely "yes it is the weekend" and then promptly hung up on me before I could even finish my sentence. Seriously?? What kind of restaurant not only refuses business but also has extremely rude employees that hang up on people? Thankfully I discovered Lake City family restaurant that not only is more than willing to take to go orders at any time but the owner personally offered to have me sit on the patio and eat there when I said I had a dog. That's the kind of service I would expect from a restaurant and they will be getting all my business going forward because Slippery's apparently feels they are above customer service. My wife and I took my elderly parents their on the evening of June 30 because of the nice river view on the outside patio. However, we had to wait for about 30 minutes while others who came after us were waited on. Finally, a waitress came to our table and said she wasn't our waitress but would take care of us because she saw we had been waiting a long time, but she made it clear she was not happy about it. Thought this would be a fun destination for Father's Day from the Viroqua/LaCrosse area. Had bloody marys on the deck , then inside for lunch. Our first drink from the bar was served in a very obviously broken glass. I brought it up to the bar and they made a new one. OK. The waitress took our order on an ipad that seemed maybe unfamiliar to her. Somehow the order never made it to the kitchen. She apologized for a problem in the kitchen and said our order would be out soon. OK. Then the owner came out and said our order was lost in cyberspace and apologized again, and said our order would be out soon. OK. The food was good! Then came the bill. It was very awkward having the total announced at the table. I would have preferred to pay it at the bar, but was told that was not possible. No adjustments were made for our hour long wait and I felt on the spot with the signature waiting on the ipad and the waitress pointing out the tip option. Leaving the restaurant I used the washroom and there was no soap in the dispenser. Not really a big deal, but it felt like the last straw as far as attention to details. We went to the Eagle Center on a Saturday and then decided to try Slippery's. We got there at lunch time and were seated quickly by the hostess. After waiting about 5 minutes, our waitress finally showed up and got us drinks and we ordered the special (pulled pork sandwiches). It didn't look to be that busy but looked like they didn't have enough help. We waited for a half hour without the waitress coming back for refills. We flagged down another woman who said that they had 17 people on the patio they had to serve and it backed them up. She told us to keep drinking while we wait and brought us refills. There was a table of 6 next to us that had ordered as we got there. They got their meals and were able to finish them, pay the bill and leave. Another table behind us ordered after us and got their meals. We ordered the special, which was the pulled pork sandwich. It's called the special because it should already be ready to scoop up and serve quickly. It's planned ahead to be that way. The special also came with cole slaw and chips. Nothing had to be cooked to order (which is what most of the people next to us had ordered) so this should have been easy and quick. Again we waited without our waitress showing up and after waiting a total of 70 minutes we said the heck with it. We flagged down the woman who had gotten us the refills and told her we were tired of waiting and wanted to just pay for our drinks. She said she told us, rather snippy, that there were 17 people they had to take care of first. Yeah, but 70 minutes? Really? Weren't we inside and they were outside? So you blow everyone else off for an hour and cater to just them? What about the people who came after us and got their meals? She replied with a snotty "Just leave!" This was the owner. We couldn't believe the way she acted. If you are busy, the thing to do is make sure you keep your customers informed and at least check back with refills. We will never go back. Horrible experience and a huge waste of 70 minutes of our time! read more

We have gone to Slippery's three times in the last two months, the most recent being this evening. I thought perhaps the poor service, mediocre food, and messed up billing to be an anomaly the first two times, but three strikes and you're out. Tonight, there was not one error on our bill, but four, and unless we had asked for a breakdown of our bill, we probably would have just paid it without question. That's unacceptable. After taking our initial drink order, it was about 10 minutes before they were brought to the table, and with two being soda with free refills, we thought someone would come before our meal arrived to make sure that was done. It didn't happen, and when we asked for refills, water was brought, not lemonade. Our meals were marginal; that is, just barely ok. I ordered a Philly steak sandwich which had more cheese than steak, and there wasn't much cheese. Adding it all together, after three consecutive poor showings, we're going to look for a different place. I think that Slippery's rests on its reputation and the free marketing it received from the movie "Grumpy Old Men", and it's not deserved. In summary, Slippery's is high priced and over rated. If you have any other option, I'd encourage you to go there. read more

Worst service EVER. We eat out more than once weekly and this is the worst service we've ever had. It wasn't even busy, 8 people in the restaurant, 6 outside and multiple servers working. We were completely ignored until we had one bite left, then we were asked if it tasted ok. Tried to get our waitress for more drinks, no luck. Tried to get the side of mayo that was supposed to come with the blt. No luck. Finally cornered an older server and she gave us a small packet out of her pocket. Hmmm..not exactly a "side" of mayo. In the blt the tomato was WHITE, there was one 3"piece of limp lettuce, and the bacon wasn't done. Decent cheeseburger, but WAY over done, ordered medium well, got more than well done. Nice view of the river. Maybe ok if you sit at the outside bar area and get your drinks from the little hut. Don't eat here, and DO NOT expect to be waited on. Our waitress wandered around, filled ketchup bottles, etc. NEVER checked with us, never even looked toward us. We are a couple in our 50's and were dressed decent. You would have thought they would have realized a good tip might have been coming. We would have ordered multiple drinks, but no waitress. We tipped accordingly. read more

We stopped in after hitting the National Eagle Center...which was awesome. We entered about almost 3, so it was not close to the dinner rush. We had to seat ourselves because the hostess was sitting at the bar with other employees. No one greeted us or acknowledged we were there even though they watched us seat ourselves. The service was horrible all around...The hostess was sitting at the bar taking her ponytail out and fluffing her hair repeatedly. Thank goodness no one was sitting on her side of the bar. Another waitress was rolling silverware at the bar and was on her phone. This should have been done at a table near the back...not the first thing customers see when they walk in. The bartender and another server...not the one rolling silverware were talking over the bar during 75% of the time we were in there. The bartender's back was toward the customers on the back side of the bar. It took a long time to get a server to our table...did I mention there were not many people in the place.... We had to go hunt down 2 children's activity sheets and crayons. When the waitress came to take our order...we had to ask for the children's menu. We had to flag down a different server to get our table cleared from the appetizers and to get drink refills. The food was not that great nor were the portions that large for the prices. 75.00 for 4 adults and 2 kids without any alcohol. Some of the food was cold. After dinner...the silverware waitress was sitting at the bar cashing out and counting tips. I hope this day was random and not how customers are treated daily. We would not send anyone here. We usually tip over 20%. The 10 % was a gift. read more

The burger and the price were average. I didn't order anything to drink because they didn't offer my choice of soda. So I decided that I would order dessert. Big mistake! The cheesecake that I ordered tasted like wax. I think it sat out for a couple of days. It was as hard as a rock- I actually thought it was frozen at first. They did take it off my bill, but I was not pleased. I think they should play up the river more. It was quite dark inside and the service was horrible! One cannot tell if they should seat themselves or wait to be seated. There seemed to be several dining/ drinking areas and it had a chaotic feel. There was no flow to the place. How long can they rely on the movie for business. Although I love the movie, many people have not heard of it and I think they should start relying on better food, service and atmosphere to stay afloat.. Flooding of the place will surely sink it...
