I can't say enough about this business. I have a 12-year-old grandson who is crazy about all things aquatic. As a certified scuba diver, I knew diving was something he would love. Our issue was time. With summer sports and activities and the impending start of a new school year, our options were limited. Anthony worked with me to craft a private program that both my grandson and husband would love. I've been a PADI certified diver since 2002, so I did a refresher course while they worked for their open water certification. Anthony arranged a pool dive and four open water dives. I popped in the shop to take a quick look at their inventory. It was my last day in town and unfortunately I didn't have enough time on my trip to book a shore dive with them. However, when I called them last Thursday they were super kind and accommodating in order to help me find a boat charter going out that weekend. Thanks to their recommendation, I ended up having a great time down in Ventura diving the Anacapa island off of the Spectre. It was nice to meet the shop personnel and they even had four different types of gloves in my size(xs)!! I was so thrilled to have so many options because it's often hard to find such a small size without having to make a blind purchase online. I was given full detail on all four types of gloves and it greatly aided me in making the right purchase. The kind shopkeeper also pointed out that I should snag a California dive flag sticker because it was my first time having completed dives in California and he said I earned it. They sure do know how to make a visitor feel welcome and I can't wait to return to the area so that I can dive with them! read more

What a great locally owned dive shop! This place has it all. My boyfriend and I got PADI Open Water certified with one of their Dive Instructors, Morgan. He was a great instructor that walked us step by step along the way and was more than willing to answer all our questions and help us out. So you looked up something like scuba diving, scuba gear, scuba lessons or you're just plain looking for a scuba community in or around San Luis Obispo. You're seeing two high five reviews on SLO Ocean Currents, now here you are in the trenches reading why. Here's why: Who am I? I'm not some employee trying to sweeten up the yelp pull (just see my other reviews to know that). I am a hard working 30 something guy getting married soon and taking a trip to the Caribbean (guess what the highlight of that trip is going to be?). I actually got certified through NAUI when I was 17 but since I haven't had a chance to dive much in all that time, I decided to get re-certified with my soon to be wife. We came to SLO Ocean Currents after all the good feedback we saw on various sites. I'm now doing my part to keep those positive vibes flowing... One for each star: 1) Gear -- They don't sell crap and there is a good range of selection. By in large they're selling Aqua Lung and Suunto products along with other brands of quality periphs (accessories, masks, fins, snorkels). I feel they sell gear that's focused towards function for a practical recreational diver, much less boutique eye candy or bottom barrel stuff you'll regret owning after your second dive. 2) Service -- Completely no BS. Morgan seems to live there, so does Jeff. Everyone there is friendly, knows their stuff, they use the gear they sell and you can trust them on their advice. Of the purchases I've made at the store, I've been EXTREMELY satisfied, I plan to make more purchases in the future. They run deals, closeouts, rental packages and more that can compete with craigslist and other online prices, just ask them. Morgan and Jeff don't pressure the up-sale but they will tell you what you're paying for and provide logical reasons for spending more on some gear and less on others. It's like buying flight equipment from 17,000 hour pilots, they tend to know what you need probably even better than you do. What's more, they'll look at and service gear you bought second hand (if they are equipped for the brand you bought). 3) Training -- You're going to be a safe, confident diver through these guys. Coming from someone who has already gone trough the certification process once before, I can tell you that this PADI experience was more comprehensive and thorough than the last. Morgan was our instructor but all of the instructors are consummate professionals who are overqualified but still bring sense of fun to the class. We opted to do the open water boat dive to the Channel Islands which was completely and totally worth it. I can say honestly that I feel very confident with the skills I have learned and I'm ready to go on my next California dive as soon as possible. 4) Community -- Good People. I now know Morgan and Jeff but everyone I've met affiliated with SLO Ocean Currents has been extremely genuine, knowledgeable and open hearted. They love what they do and they're looking to get people connected. Getting into SCUBA really is like getting to know the larger part of our planet but it feels going to another planet. 5) Reliability -- Like having friends on the inside. I trust this crew and I know that if I get some gear from them, they've got my best interests in mind because they want to see me again. If I bring some gear in, I'm certain they'll shoot me straight on it. That's why I'm a firm believer in supporting local businesses. Online might be a little cheaper but it's also completely impersonal and does nothing to help the local community. If all that didn't convince you to stop in, I don't know what will! This is the place to go for snorkel and scuba gear! The products are a little on the pricey side, BUT they are really high quality and the salespeople are especially helpful and knowledgeable. I went in looking for snorkel gear and they have a wall of snorkel masks to fit every face. The salesman, I think his name is Morgan, hung out with us while we were trying on different masks and told us the benefits and drawbacks of every single one, which was incredibly helpful as I am a novice snorkeler. He was not at all pushy and completely stoked on snorkeling, diving, and scuba, which got me excited about snorkeling, diving, and scuba too! The store employees teach the ASI scuba classes at Cal Poly as well as their own classes through their business, which sounds really fun. The ASI class goes around and dives along the Central Coast and finish with a trip to Santa Barbara and the class out of the shop does the same Central Coast dives with a final dive at the Channel Islands. Overall, I really appreciate their enthusiasm and customer service. I'm definitely planning on taking a scuba class from them. Way to go Ocean Currents! read more

I just had the pleasure of spending about a month with the crew at SLO Ocean Currents. What a great group of dive professionals. My 12 year old daughter took their open water certification course and just graduated as a certified SCUBA diver! Whoohoo. Jeff was her instructor for the majority of the course. He is very knowledgable, patient and a lot of fun as well. He was such a great instructor and super great with kids. I would recommend him in a second to anyone. Steve was also amazing. He is earning his dive master certification through the shop and assists with all of the pool and ocean classes. He is very supportive and also great with the class. Morgan joined us for our last certification boat dives off of the Spectre boat in Ventura (Jeff had a vacation planned for the tropics). Morgan was also great. He is super knowledgable about ocean life and made everyone feel comfortable on the boat. The owner of the shop Anthony is easy going and always happy to work with you. Not only an amazing dive retail store, but excellent customer service. The staff is highly experienced and very passionate about diving. I like that each instructor has their own specialty whether it is talking to Morgan about underwater photography, Jeff about hunting, or the owner, Anthony about great dive spots around the world. I recently participated in their annual Halloween themed day in Morro where we carved pumpkins and did a "pumpkin" hunt, all underwater! I was waiting a little bit to write a review on this place and now that our certification process is done I feel enticed to write a review. My boyfriend and I recently got certified by Ocean Currents. Jeff was our instructor. To start, Jeff is absolutely awesome and probably one of if not the most qualified instructor around. He was an exceptional teacher and was extremely personable. At the end of our certification process we went out to go diving through the Spectre Boat. The experience was amazing and Jeff did a great job at pointing out a lot of cool underwater life that probably would have been missed otherwise. The store itself is also great. There are a few core people that work there it seems like. Every time I have walked into the store I got amazing customer service. Morgan and Jeff take the time to explain everything to you. Their enthusiasm for diving is transparent and I think that shows in the way they treat everyone that walks into the store. The store sells mainly Aqualung equipment which is not cheap by any means. However, they are selling great equipment which will probably last a long long time. Overall, every time I walk into this store I feel like I'm a VIP! I'm getting certified through SLO Ocean Currents and when I went to pick up my gear before my first ocean dive, the guy working was incredibly rude to me. He made multiple very condescending comments towards almost everything I said. He expected me to know everything about diving even though this is my first dive and spoke to me like I was dumb. I've heard really great things about this dive shop so I want to write this in hopes that there can be an attitude adjustment of this employee and his behavior towards customers is not tolerated anymore. On the other hand, Morgan was incredibly nice and knowledgable when I talked with him and I hope that he can help straighten this guy out! read more

This is a great place if you're wanting to learn how to scuba dive or simply just go diving with this bunch. Our two kids ages 13 and 16 just got certified. Our 13 year daughter was a little skittish on some of the exercises but Morgan, her instructor, was extremely patient with her. Seriously the best guys around to learn to dive with! I bought the class package for my boyfriend and I for his birthday to get certified over summer. Had an awesome experience throughout the class and felt that everyone got the needed attention to make sure we were all comfortable enough to start diving in the ocean. After getting certified I've stopped by the dive shop for gear, to see what new classes/trips are coming up, or just to chat. Everyone there is always willing to discuss diving with you whether you're a novice or have been diving for years.
