I first discovered Slow by Slow when a group of my mom friends would meet here on cold winter Monday mornings with our gaggle of children. We would all get a coffee and maybe a pastry and sit at one of the long tables for 45 minutes. That was about the limit before we couldn't take our 1 year olds trying to slide down the stairs one more time or the 3 year olds asking for more treats...and we'd head out for the library story time. Slow by Slow was always so accommodating to us and never made us feel like a bother. We definitely WERE a bother. :) The downside is that the seating area is narrow and it can get quite crowded early in the morning. Their main entrance is also on a lower level so to get to the seating you must go up stairs. These two things mean that getting strollers in and out is nearly impossible. I imagine the same could be said for folx in wheelchairs or with other accessibility needs. There must be a ramp behind the back door, otherwise they'd be out of ADA compliance, but I haven't seen it with my own two eyes. However, the most important thing is their coffee! They are true to their name. It is slow. They do pour over for their regular coffee and like all good things, it takes time. I'm traditional in my coffee tastes and have only had their iced drip coffee and hot drip coffee. Both delicious and smooth. I have also had a muffin. Well, I had a small corner of a muffin because my ravenous child devoured the whole thing before I made it to our seat with my coffee. :-| All in all, Slow by Slow is a great place to hang out and drink beverages, though it does present a pickle to people who generally avoid stairs. read more

Such a fun little spot for coffee! My little ladies love to get coffee and a treat after dance class, so today we decided to try somewhere new. And I'm glad we did! I was going to try their seasonal candy cane forest, but they were out of crushed candy cane for the rim. They made it with the chocolate ganache and mint syrup and - yum! Then it came in this adorable pink cup and I'm sold. The kids tried a chocolate croissant and a GIANT oatmeal raisin cookie. Both were tasty! Though I wish the croissant would have been warm. Husband had a vanilla latte (that I'm just now realizing I didn't sample...) and a raspberry danish (that I ate half of ). It's a quiet spot, so luckily the kids were feeling pretty chill. Finally decided to check this place out after hearing all the good reviews. They have a decent amount of seating. Not my ideal place if I were going to get some work done or study since all the tables are big. There are a few outlets along the wall if you need power. Good drink and pastry selection. I went with my go to cold brew and chocolate chip cookie (the banana bread looks really good too). They don't do a typical cold brew. It's a Japanese style. It was really good though. The cookie was good. Crunchy, but good. I like them more crunch on the edges and soft and gooey in the center. Overall this is a good local coffee shop (I'll always support a local place over a chain). Service was quick and friendly. The one downside is they aren't open very late. read more

Way to go, Slow by Slow. Pour over coffee was artistically presented and the recommended bean by a friendly barista was exactly to my taste standards. A robust, not acidic cup made my taste buds smile. Cheers to a staff of educated and welcoming folks. By the set up of the place, one might walk in and expect a level of snooty coldness. Greatly pleased that's not the case at all! At around 3 bucks for a pour over, it's not cheap but fair enough for some tasty, no sugar and fake crap coffee. Had a decent almond croissant alongside my brew. That was good; if I were to guess, it might have come from Gaston's Bakery. Black and white titles give the place a retro feel. Indigo and I were on the town for a boutique day downtown. I've seen the reviews, the pictures, and I'd say they're all accurate. The place has an approachable chic, hipster vibe. The type of place that would instagram well. I ordered banana bread and was debating coffee. I realized that it would be foolish not to get coffee since I was already there and paid for street parking insanely close by (I'm hardly that lucky). I ordered a vanilla latte made with almond milk. The broista whipped up beautiful latte, but realized he made it with milk. I tried to convince him that it was fine but he insisted that I get what I originally asked for. So he made it again, and it was beautiful as well. I felt bad drinking it but it was delicious. I'm not a coffee snob, or coffee expert, however this was the best vanilla latte I've had. I'm not knocking my everyday latte mind you. They do the job just fine, like my favorite jeans. But this latte is more like my date night heels. Service was excellent and entertaining. Atmosphere was just lovely. If you're feeling fancy, this is the coffee place for you. Indigo gives this place 30 stars for fancy... I stopped in here for a quick cup. Staff more interested in having a conversation amongst themselves than taking care of customer. Took my coffee outside to enjoy the weather and the female staff member comes out talking to two guys sitting next to me stating how hungover she is. Really bad experience here. I think this is my new favorite spot for coffee! I have browsed most of Boise in hopes of some tasty, well done coffee. Up until now, I was just settling. Slow by Slow knows what they are doing. The coffee is just right, fresh, and incredibly tasty. The menu is simple (that's how it should be!) and the atmosphere it's right for everyone. Want to hang out? Long tables for friends. Still a 5-star experience. And I still stand by everything that I wrote in my last review. There is one thing, however, that I would like to expound upon. Most of the time when I come to Slow By Slow there is a long line behind me. Because of this, I have never taken the time to thoroughly look through the menu. I usually just ask the barista what espresso they like best, and that's what I've stuck with. This past weekend I made a visit here, and while I was waiting in line, I realized that there was no one behind me. I took this moment to read through the full menu and decide on a drink, and here's what I decided on: Mocha, but not just any mocha. I selected the "dreamboat" espresso, which has undertones of orange blossom. Along with this, I added in "Old Fashion" flavor (+ $0.50 more), which also had undertones of orange in it as well. The combination of these slightly fruity undertones and the rich/bitter chocolate was heavenly. If you took the time to read this whole update, you should make the trip to go try it. The coffee here is solid. The chocolate is better and the setting is best. The staff is awesome and so accommodating every time I've gone in. They clearly gave excellent taste in their selection and it's a good mix of a social and study space. What a lovely little treat this coffee shoppe is. I met a friend here for a meeting and it was the perfect spot to start our day! Right on 8th the location is phenomenal. The big window front allows a lot of light inside, and I love the tile on the floor. There is limited seating unless you like to share tables because the majority of the tables are 6 Tops. I must have caught this place on a bad day because my and my gal's drinks were TERRIBLE. And served with a large dose of attitude. I love good coffee. I grind my own beans and have several methods of making it that I enjoy. I was happy to see they had a pour over option on the menu with three types of beans to choose from. Ask I asked our server which would be the lightest roast and got nothing but attitude in return. None seemed to be the answer. Then I dared to ask for cream and sugar! This was met with total contempt and when I did get my drink it had no sweetener and an eye dropper of milk (not cream) in it. My gal had some type of hot cocoa drink that was weak and lame. Eleven dollars later we left our 3/4 full cups on the table and went on to find a real cup of coffee elsewhere. Go fuck yourself! read more

Cute place as a first impression. Nice to see there was an option for espresso beans when ordering espresso based drink. It all kind of went downhill from there. What good does it do to make everything so measured and precise if the end result is mediocre at best? I ordered a 12 oz mocha w/extra shot. Here they apparently go by grams and volume but its equivalent to 4 shots. Same amount of espresso for my husbands 12 oz latte. First impressions would be of the lovely cup of simple art. I am a sucker for this. Then you notice the micro foam is not quite right? Way too many bubbles. Second, the drink is way too hot. I know many people prefer their hot coffee based drinks to be pipping hot but for quality espresso based drinks that is not good. Third (and most important) the drink itself was terrible. I chose the ritual espresso bean as my option and I don't know if it was the bean, the pull, or the chocolate they use but it was way to "bright" and acidic. Not palatable at all. My husband is less picky but half way through and a few degrees cooler he straight up didn't care for it either. Nice concept but end result lacking for sure especially at those prices.
