Many years ago, the southeast area known as Sellwood was the most populated area of Portland (more…read morepopulated than Portland itself was at that time). The Sellwood area featured a racetrack, and an infamous bar called the Whitehouse (known for its gambling and prostitution), just off of what is now SW Macadam. The street of Macadam derived its name from the early process of road paving, known as macadamizing. This was the first paved road in Portland near the turn of the 20th century, and tales abound of men racing their horse-pulled buggies down this road to The Whitehouse; an early form of drag racing I suppose. Within Sellwood itself stood a bar known as the Leipzig, and for years this was one of many watering holes on the southeast side near the bridge. Years later, the original owner would sell the Leipzig to its current owners, with one caveat, the Leipzig sign was to remain, and so it does to this day. Today the attached restaurant is known as Gino's. The bar inside was salvaged from a Chicago warehouse by the current owner, and adds a more authentic old-world touch to the atmosphere of the bar (the brass seal from the manufacturer is still on the bar today). The legacy left behind by the original owner, the Leipzig sign, often makes me consider what drives men to want to create and perpetuate legacies? The fish symbolizes the many years back in the turn of the century when fisherman used to come back from a day of fishing to the Liepzig, where the owner would let them clean the fish in the back of the restaurant. I wonder too, how many of those he was given for the Saturday evening special... Distilled http://distilledpublishing.blogspot.com/

Seem stressed out that we came in at all. Didn't even stay to eat because felt like we were a burden on him for even being there. Will never go again. To bad the food looked excellent.

They are there to get you, serve you and cook delicious food…read more For us this is a special restaurant and such special food. The very best ever "French Toast". Quiet setting, seems hard to find until after you go. Definitely worth the trip. We've been going since 1984.

Nothing fancy on the inside --- I thought I accidentally walked into someone's house at first ---…read morebut maybe that's part of the charm. It's a bit dark, a bit funky, but unpretentious and authentic, kinda like it's run by a family rather than a marketing firm. The food comes out fresh and the menu offers some interesting twists (not just the usual fare) which for me took it from 3 stars to 4. The service, also, was just wonderful - friendly but pro, all the way. I had the Shirred Eggs (baked and smothered in tomato sauce), a nice change from my usual over easy order, all savory and saucy, and the hash browns they came with just took it to another level; the fluffy pucks are almost mashed on the inside, with a crust-like outer that collapses in your mouth. Perfect to sop up all the tomato sauce with. Seating is tight for breakfast in the downstairs area, and although there is a patio, I'd skip it this time of year; it's all covered with dark material and with no natural light, it feels pretty cave-like out there, IMO. Still a great neighborhood place, and a nice menu of French-forward items too, if that's your thing. No frills, just good food.
