I was meaning to go to the Portland Bottle Shop and walked in here. Street parking which can be a problem during busy times in this neighborhood but was ok today. Service was ok. But this felt like some dude's garage. Darts, a tv with video game console, pinball, lots of beers, and sports on tvs. And a golden retriever roaming around. Random bones and chew toys laying about. There were a few groups here so people enjoyed it. But if you're at all allergic to dogs don't come here.

Great vibe, they have added more TV's, more beers on tap and some great wine choices. They are going to be open for the World Cup matches!

The Muddy Rudder can hold it's head high in this arena. The interior has a great feel as an impressive log tabletop stretches out before you when one first enters. The bar is a nice, old wooden bar with the establishment giving a very warm embrace with it's rustic decor and charm. They have outside seating, both street side and in a side patio. As for the beer selection, they do a very good job curating. For example, until recently, one could almost count on there being an import beer on tap. They also do a good job of having a wide variety of styles, they have one on pull tap (if you are unfamiliar, give it a try - you will be glad you did) and they are constantly rotating with truly local brews. They also have a chalkboard which lists all the brews, their ABV and frequently the IBUs. There are 16 rotating taps. Kudos to the person running this part of the operation. As for the food, I have never been disappointed and I have eaten here frequently. I am a sucker for their strombolis. In NY, strombolis were a go-to meal at a pizzeria, but they are few and far between in the PNW. Not only does The Muddy Rudder have strombolis, they also make them in the true stromboli tradition. Do note that the pizza dough here is as close to NY as I have found in Portland, which obviously means try the pizza as well - it is very good. They then offer other food options which have also always only pleased. Do give this spot a visit - you will not be disappointed.

I was blissfully unaware of how annoying that was in the moment (whoops) , but the staff were super nice and everything was delicious. Many years ago, the southeast area known as Sellwood was the most populated area of Portland (more…read morepopulated than Portland itself was at that time). The Sellwood area featured a racetrack, and an infamous bar called the Whitehouse (known for its gambling and prostitution), just off of what is now SW Macadam. The street of Macadam derived its name from the early process of road paving, known as macadamizing. This was the first paved road in Portland near the turn of the 20th century, and tales abound of men racing their horse-pulled buggies down this road to The Whitehouse; an early form of drag racing I suppose. Within Sellwood itself stood a bar known as the Leipzig, and for years this was one of many watering holes on the southeast side near the bridge. Years later, the original owner would sell the Leipzig to its current owners, with one caveat, the Leipzig sign was to remain, and so it does to this day. Today the attached restaurant is known as Gino's. The bar inside was salvaged from a Chicago warehouse by the current owner, and adds a more authentic old-world touch to the atmosphere of the bar (the brass seal from the manufacturer is still on the bar today). The legacy left behind by the original owner, the Leipzig sign, often makes me consider what drives men to want to create and perpetuate legacies? The fish symbolizes the many years back in the turn of the century when fisherman used to come back from a day of fishing to the Liepzig, where the owner would let them clean the fish in the back of the restaurant. I wonder too, how many of those he was given for the Saturday evening special... Distilled http://distilledpublishing.blogspot.com/
