Au Cheval is a must visit every time I visit Chicago. This was my first at a Small Cheval though and we were blown away. Very clean and well attended serving and eating areas! First I'll say we arrived 30 min prior to closing which I try to never do. The staff were still very nice and accommodating with any questions and requests we had. Ordered: Double Cheeseburger and cheeseburgers (for the kids) - perfectly cooked and seasoned patties while the bun was soft and a great envelope for the burgers. Sauce etc was great per my expectations! Fries - nice crispy outside and soft and flavorful inside! Chocolate shake was an awesome cherry on top of our experience! **Must have sides: Garlic aioli and cheese sauce** Do yourself a favor and come here if you're in a 5 mile radius or visit one nearby you! read more

I have actually never been to a Small Cheval before this trip. I have only been to Au Cheval and while this is NOT that, it is still pretty good! This is a fancier burger type of place. Still, I my cheeseburger was excellent and clearly cooked by somebody who knows what they are doing. I got the fries as well which was a nice bonus with their aioli (?) sauce. If there was any drawbacks, it was that this place is very expensive. Its also a bit oddly shaped and the experience varies based on the weather. Unfortunately, it was cold and rainy when I stopped by so everybody was huddled inside. Even so, I liked my burger and fries and even if its not as good as Au Cheval, its still miles ahead of most other fast food burger spots! read more

Despite the long line, they cracked jokes with us and really warmed our spirits as soon as we got to the front of the line. It also helps that the old fashioned was pretty dang strong! Here's what we ordered: - Double cheese burger - cheesy, saucy, delicious. packed with flavor and decently sized - Fries - For someone who is picky about their fries, I had no complaints. - Strawberry milkshake (which you can make boozy for an extra couple of bucks) - So tasty and the perfect amount. Counter-service made for a quick and easy eat. All seating is outside so keep that in mind - we went there on a HOT night but it was still worth it, and the (free) self-serve ice water jug was a major game changer. The community tables/seat-yourself model works well with this layout and overall vibe. Find a spot, make friends, enjoy your food! My only complaint: The order/pickup spot needs some better signage, because I was a little confused by the layout and saw a few others in the same boat. This was my second time here and it hit just as much as the first. The burgers aren't the best in the city but they are reliably delicious burgers. The golden fries are perfectly crispy and come with a side sauce which is so good. There is only outdoor seating, partially covered, so good in better weather. read more

staff is super nice at this location!!! we order for takeout in the winter and everything is always hot and fresh never misses. I like to order the burger with lettuce and it's a great way to get a lot of protein, their truffle aioli is delicious as well so I always get it with the fries. The small is super small and has limited which is frustrating because it gets super busy. The cashier is nice but it's more of a fast food place with quick turnaround. The burger is super good though and the fries or burger with the truffle sauce is the best and I highly recommend it. Another Chicago go-to! This is one of my favorite burger places that I try to visit at least once or twice every month. I absolutely love their fries because they are the perfect level of crispiness. I've tried their fries with the white cheese sauce, but I truly prefer the garlic aioli sauce, which is just absolutely delicious and my favorite condiment to have with fries now. Their cheeseburgers are also equally as delicious. They have tons of outdoor picnic-table seating and no indoor seating. Some of the tables are covered, but most are uncovered. Online ordering is very easy, but ordering in the restaurant is never too busy. You generally don't have to wait long if you order in the restaurant. I did a pick up order and ate in my car after a day at Lincoln park zoo. The burger was delicious, I really enjoyed the dijonaise sauce on it. They also had a thick piece of perfectly crispy iceberg lettuce that I love on a burger. I regret not getting any bacon on my burger, so I'll have to try that next time. The lemonade was pretty good, had a nice tartness without being mouth puckering. The cheese sauce to dip the fries in was very runny, so definitely not car friendly, but still very delicious. After receiving multiple recommendations to try their burgers, we stumbled upon the old town location! The place was packed so that was a good sign! We didn't wait too long to order and got an order of their golden fries, two double cheeseburgers, a shake and root beer float. The total was around $50 before tip. They only offer outdoor seating but do have heat lamps around their patio area to help on the cooler days! We waited maybe around 20-25 minutes for our food, though the shake and float came out before then. The burger lived up to its hype, delicious. The fries were perfectly crisp. The strawberry milkshake was quite quick. The root-beer float was your typical float imo. Overall good food, but had I known only outdoor seating, I would've come more prepared. I think its safe to say that Small Cheval offered us all an experience that brought not only satisfaction but also a tiny little grin amongst even the most hungover face. As an Eastern European food connoisseur new to the Chicago area, I have carefully constructed a rating system that reflects my personal thoughts, feelings, and experience. Food: 9/10 My Fiancé and I each got the Signature Double Cheeseburger which was served house style (dijon, mayo, pickles, and onions). Overall, the burger was incredible and what made it unique was its ability to offer a savory, melt in your mouth taste without the heaviness of a burger that would sideline you on the couch for the rest of the evening. To my surprise, the soft and airy bun was able to maintain its structure until the very last bite. The pickles on the burger were thick cut and offered refreshing whispers with each bite of this savory burger. We also shared the Golden Fries which came with a side of what I believe was garlic aioli. The fries were straight cut and a bit thicker than your typical fries. Overall, the French fries were good but maybe could've been a bit crispier. The real highlight was the garlic aioli. I am a bit of an aioli snob, and this aioli was flirting with perfection. The aioli came in a tiny cup, but they happily gave us more upon our request. The aioli really took these fries to the next level. Drink: 8/10 The menu had some extensive drink options which looked interesting and delicious, but the only drink we ordered was their Hopewell Seasonal beer. I believe I was served a Hazy IPA which was delicious. The hoppiness of the beer with a subtle fruitiness complimented the burger and fries perfectly. Atmosphere: 9/10 The menu is kept simple and straight to the point, which provides the costumer with an intimate ordering experience. The outdoor patio allows customers to sit where they choose while enjoying the weather. This is a great option for a quick and casual sit-down meal done at a professional level. Return Likelihood: 9/10 This was a burger that I find myself still thinking about from time to time. They have perfected their craft and leave you wanting more. The prices are reasonable, and the quick/casual nature of Small Cheval make this a place that I can easily return to for a reliable gourmet meal. They only offer outdoor seating on a first come first serve basis. But it's also a perfect take out spot! You walk in, place your order, get your buzzer, grab a seat, and wait for the the best burger of your life. I got the cheeseburger + fries (with the aioli sauce to dip). This burger is truly what I have waited for my entire life - from the perfect bun which is soft and fluffy to the incredible patty which is perfectly cooked and seasoned, it could not get any better. The meat was soooo juicy and every bite exploded with flavors from the meat, the pickles, the cheese, and the delicious sauce inside. The fries were perfect - salty and crispy. And dipping it inside the aioli only made them taste better! I could go on and on about this place, but I think you get the point. And I really appreciated they have them next to the ketchup and open to take. The burger was surprisingly great temperature and cooked exactly they way it should be.
