lovely people & facility. very friendly & patient with me and my daughter every time we go. only problem is that they rarely answer the phone & that is putting it kindly. ive called on 7 different occasions (usually in the morning) to try and get quotes on certain things & they've only answered twice. why do i feel like a stalker just for wanting to ask how much something is? tried to leave a voice message like told and no response or call back. again, lovely place & people but with two receptionists i sure one of them can answer the phone for once just for a simple quote. read more

I am adding a one-star review to my previous two-star review. I had given them a small modicum of grace, but after their ( ChatGPT -generated, ugggh) reply to my first evaluation, in which they said they " couldn't find [ me] in their system". I must admit I was shocked. I can only infer from this that they do not keep legally-mandated medical records. They really should be reported and audited, which I just might have to take concrete steps to address. Beware. I'll add a few more details as to what is fueling such vitriol from my end. I took my beloved cat to them for a check-up and behavioral issues. They pinpointed what they ( and they bragged about their skill in doing so) concluded was a tooth infection requiring a $3000 extraction. I later discovered. that my cat's problematic conduct likely stems from her having been feral at one point. Any amateur animal carer should immediately spot from her ( painless) mildly-clipped left ear from the TNR ( trap, neuter, release program. They also informed me by phone that my other beloved feline had stage 2 kidney disease. I started sobbing uncontrolledly, utterly distraught. The vet said: " oh, I thought you knew". Like the other reviews here state, the vet ( whom I had never met and who was rather brusque) rushed me off the phone so fast (" I thought you knew") that I can only conclude that she did not care even one iota. In a subsequent visit, a different vet told me that my cat might live " another year or two, tops". Three years later, my 19- year-old feline is still thriving. Again, this practice should be termed "closed portal to pets and well-being" instead of " small door". And finally, as stated in other reviews, beware of their "transparent pricing". They claim they " make the checkout easy" by keeping your card on file for " easy, cashless transactions". Seriously? Post-COVID? What that maneuver really is is a subtle ploy to get you to agree to their pricing terms because there is pressure to continue once you're in the exam room. Additionally, they do this so you can just walk out without feeling the full brunt of their gutting high prices. And guess what? Their " membership", which is essentially paying them for the privilege of paying them ( you can't see the vet without forking out 159/year) is scandalously excessive. They claim you get 24/7 " virtual vet care". However, these so-called " vets on call" are pretty useless and just want you to go in for a visit. Not helpful at all. Guess what else? As a " favor" they automatically renew your membership without much notice..if you somehow miss the email, you're out almost $200 you will never see again.. My verdict? THUMBS DOWN. read more

First time there was welcoming from the receptionists to the doctors. It was pleasant for me and my little tuxie.

Extremely frustrating and disappointing experience. We scheduled a simple nurse visit for our cat through the app and received daily reminders leading up to the appointment--including multiple warnings about a $50 fee if we canceled within 24 hours. Then, just 30 minutes before our scheduled time, we got a call saying they couldn't see our cat because she hadn't had a doctor exam within the past 12 months, a "policy." This was never flagged at booking, despite all the automated notifications they managed to send. On top of that, there was absolutely no regard for our time or schedule--canceling on us last-minute after we had already planned around the appointment is completely unacceptable. When I asked if they would be crediting our account the $50 cancellation fee given they were the ones effectively canceling last-minute, the receptionist actually laughed and said no. Completely disorganized, poor communication, zero accountability, and a total disregard for their clients' time. What a joke. read more

Unfortunately I have to somewhat agree with the other negative review on google regarding Dr Annunziata. We brought our dog, Mayflower, in for a consultation regarding a possible bump/swelling on her tail, having previously been recommended for a biopsy by a different doctor at the same location. Dr Annunziata was scheduled to perform this biopsy - and I raised some questions about it prior to surgery, so we scheduled another consultation instead. I am so glad that we didn't go through with this unnecessary surgical procedure... Our dog Mayflower is a sweet and loving rescue pitbull; though she is reactive to other dogs, she literally loves ALL humans and has ZERO history of negative reactions towards people. Mayflower displayed a fearful/anxious response to Dr Annunziata, which was the first time this has ever happened with any vet. The reason seemed to be that upon entering the consultation room, Dr Annunziata did not show any type of warmth or greeting towards our dog. She didn't even let Mayflower sniff her hand, and sat immediately close to the wall/door, displaying a kind of false warmth from afar. When it came time to examine Mayflower, Dr Annunziata went straight behind Mayflower to her rear end to examine her tail - which caused Mayflower to splay and get very low to the ground - a trauma response that happens when she's afraid. Both I and the vet assistant had to explain that "she's just trying to smell you/say hi". Again, this has never happened with any doctor that has examined Mayflower, ever. I remember thinking during the appointment, "this is crazy, you're showing no warmth towards Mayflower, not even letting her greet you - and then going straight for her tail?" It's almost as if Dr Annunziata has an aversion towards dogs, or at least bigger dogs/pitbulls - which is fine, but you probably should be deferring this appointment if that's the case, and certainly not be the doctor scheduled to operate on her! The bottom line is that Dr Annunziata's bedside manner, at least for pits it seems, is severely lacking. In addition to that, Dr Annunziata had no idea why our dog would be taking Turkey Tail supplements having had two mast cell tumors removed last year by a Dr Witter at the same location. She had a very confused reaction when reading off what medications Mayflower was taking. The fact we had to explain to her why turkey tail is sometimes recommended to help with preventative cancer treatment, is a massive red flag. I've been pretty disappointed by the level of care at this small door location recently. The front desk staff and vet assistants are all awesome, but the actual doctors are a different story, with an unnecessary biopsy being scheduled and then this traumatic visit for our dog Mayflower with Dr Annunziata. Since Dr Lauren Witter left (the doctor who performed Mayflower's mast cell tumor removals), I've struggled to find a doctor at this location that I can actually trust with anything more than routine examinations or vaccines. For future visits I absolutely will not be scheduling any appointments with Dr Annunziata. If Mayflower requires any level of care beyond these routine check ups and bloodwork, I'll be taking her elsewhere. read more

Liked the vet, she was nice and competent as were all the lovely people who work there. That said, there is too much upsell and it's too difficult to contact them with the friggin app. I wanted a follow-up, but they don't answer the phone. I don't want to chat with their chatbot on the app, I want to talk to the actual human who went to veterinary school. My cat needs a follow-up visit, preferably by telemedicine so as not to freak her out leaving the apartment. I gave up after spending 30 minutes trying to call, downloading the app and chatting with a Bot. Of course, all those things reduce the amount of human time and save Small Door money. Doesn't help my pet or me so I'm going back to the old vet. Small door's membership isn't worth it. read more

Small Door is decent if you have a puppy that needs vaccines and absolutely nothing more. The second your puppy is sick - the vets here lack experience and are operating to make money (and truly lack compassion). In 2020 Small door was a reliable, albeit overpriced vet but at least kept promises of same or next day appts, 24/7 chat with nurses and helpful staff to justify the cost as a first time dog owner. After several negative experiences we recently moved to a new vet - one that is smaller and family run (also in NYC). It wasn't until I went to this vet that I realized just how much Small Door was fleecing us while providing sub-par care. I don't need spindrift and espresso when I come to the vet - I just want experienced staff that cares about making my pet feel better. I don't like to leave negative reviews without concrete feedback so I'll do that below. 1. Small Door incorrectly marked the renewal date as three years out for one of my dog's (Bear) kennel cough vaccines (this was caught by my new vet). But it means that he went all of last year without receiving a booster for kennel cough. I know this was done in error because it was done correctly for my other dog (Comet). 2. When my other dog (Comet) was sick they did blood work and held the results for 48 hours AFTER they received it despite me telling them several times that it was an emergency and I had to take him into an emergency clinic (and would have to repeat this costly blood work all over again). How did I know it was withheld? Because when they finally sent it the date that it was received by Small Door from the lab was stamped...The doctor finally looked at the results and said everything looked fine. But then two days later called me to tell me that one of his levels was doubly elevated. Despite that they still would not help to troubleshoot what the issue was - still chalking it up to "stress." At this point my dog had been sick for two weeks. There was zero empathy shown from the vet, not a single follow up call, nothing. After I begged to talk to the vet she finally called for 5 mins and started suggesting outlandish and pricey tests for Addison's disease (he had no other symptoms for this). At which point we switched to a new vet...Our new vet quickly identified that this was caused by an allergy, switched Comet over to hypoallergenic food and his symptoms started clearing up. She deduced this from the blood work and his symptoms. 3. Once going to this new vet I learned just how much Small Door overcharges customers. This vet saw that his anal glands were full - she expressed them. She saw that his ears needed to be swabbed to check for an ear infection - she did that. For none of these things were there additional LINE ITEM charges. We paid JUST the Vet visit fee of $100. Imagine going to a doctor and they charge you extra to take your temperature, to check your ears, throat - well that is what Small Door does (all the while charging a membership fee as well). 4. Small Door also employs shady business practices like introducing a nurse fee with ZERO advance notice. They claimed to have sent an email - I did not receive it and I checked with two other small door members who did not receive this as well. My advice: find a local vet that is not a VC backed business. You'll find more experienced vets who care. For context: our new vet called recently at 8 PM one night and chatted for 20 mins to make sure Comet's symptoms were clearing up and made suggested changes to his diet. And called the next day to check in and see how he is feeling. read more

It has been one huge mistake to change vets. Small Door is a scam: the only thing they're after is your money. Over a year ago, my wheaten terrier had an obstruction in his bowel. X-rays were taken and they suggested an additional $200+ to have them viewed by an "X-ray specialist". Really? Shouldn't any vet be trained to read X-rays? Long story short, my boy was put down by Dr Chan without really explicitly confirming if he had cancer. To top it off, a day after Fiston was put down, I got a message from SD asking "how was your visit with Fiston?" Shows how much they care... A year later, I gave them another chance with my new dog. Again, Dr Chan insisted on giving my dog a third booster (having already had 2 shots). When sharing that I am traveling to Europe, she was convincing me to work with a travel coordinator at SD at the price of $750! What a ripoff!!! I've been going to Europe for years with my dogs, and I know exactly what paperwork one needs. Another one: I wanted to have my dog vaccinated for Lyme disease, a $60!charge at my old vet. Sure enough, over $240 at SD. Not only should one shot be sufficient, but no, at SD he needs a booster so they can make twice the money. Small Door is purely money driven. It's taken me a while to write this review. I wanted to make sure my input and experience was accurate. I found this vet after my 4 year old cat Kenny ended up extremely ill out of no where, no signs of illness until down to his last few weeks. We have been to multiple vets that had misdiagnosed him over the past few years. We ended up having to put him down last summer. Small vet had made this as comfortable and private as possible for both my kitty and our family. The staff from the auto text nurses to the front desk, receptionist and Dr.s were all so supportive and empathetic. They sent our family a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a nice remembrance card and paw print. I have never had to put a fur baby down and not sure this is something every vet does but it certainly helped our mourning and felt as though everyone truly cares. We have two other cats, a 5 year old and a kitten 6 months. They both enjoy their visits and check ups. They get special treats and loving care. Hands down my best experience with a vet in NYC and we will continue to come back. Definitely recommended. read more
