1/19/2023 I had a dream last night. Dr. Giangola was taken away in handcuffs, the door to the Animal Health Center was permanently closed with chains and padlocks, and all the dogs who died due to his "care" came back to life, including mine. Sometimes I'm afraid to close my eyes at night. I see dogs coming out worse than when they went in. I see dogs turned to ashes. I see people like myself sobbing. Some dreams are wishful thinking, some dreams are prophetic. It is too late for my cherished dog but you can save yours. I did my research. I am writing this review one year after Dr. G dropped his Brooklyn clients. I have a vet-aggessive pup. He's terrified of white lab coats. Giangola was the only one who was able to muzzle him. I can wax poetically about how horribly he treated his Brooklyn patients. This post isn't about that. It turns out he never tested or treated our pup for heartworm. EVEN AFTER I ASKED HIM!!! He never checked his heart. I recently found out he has a heart murmur. After a vet visit with a qualified veterinary doctor. I'm so livid with G. Dr. G is one of the most knowledgeable and compassionate veterinarians that I have ever known, and I have had my dogs treated by many over the years. Can't say anything about Dr. G since I didn't get past reception... But I left a message on the answering machine telling them that I was going to do a walk-in at 9am when they opened. I had taken my kitten to the ER the night before and needed her to go to a regular vet just for a check up because of her vomitting. I was counting the minutes for when they opened so I could try to squeeze in. I had just adopted/rescued her and felt that it was wonderful of Dr. G to offer a discount for rescued animals! So I initially came in for that very reason. As soon as I walked in, the front desk lady didn't even look up or say hello. I put my stuff down and told her I had left a message, which she obviously hadn't checked yet. She gave me some forms to fill out, I was kinda surprised they ask for so much information. ie: your drivers license number, state of registration, credit card number, exp date, etc. It makes me nervous to leave my CC # flying about! (It's funny that the front lady sounds SO SWEET and syrupy on the phone when she picks up, but when she talks to you in real life, its like back to her normal whatever voice. Like, HUGE difference!) Anyways, I asked her about the discount I saw on Yelp for rescued animals. Without batting an eye or even looking up from what she was doing, she said that they no longer do that anymore. Oh. So I decided to take a look around and found that Feline Health just a few blocks down offers a 50% discount for your first time visit. Since I had just spent a few hundred dollars on her ER visit the night before, I was sold enough to leave. I hadn't found my main vet yet and wasn't really committed to anyone at the moment. But at this rate, this particular vet wasn't really luring or welcoming at all. As I left, she didn't look up or say goodbye. Awkward!! read more

A simple question, "There's no way to be squeezed in before the holiday?" was met with a snarky almost sarcastic response that my mind has promptly erased and replaced with high levels of anger. read more

I heard about Dr. G from a fellow dog owner on my block....she raved about Dr. G so I made an appointment with the doctor, and have been so happy with his care of my dog. He is fantastic and is very careful and conservative with his care. My dog was limping and rather than jumping into surgery, Dr. G put my dog on a prescription to see if surgery could be avoided. In the end, surgery was necessary and my dog is walking perfectly. I am so happy to have found Dr. G who really cares about all animals. read more

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Giangola and his marvelous staff. I first met him after adopting my three cats from Kathryn, the rescuer at Spoiled Brats. He saved the life of my youngest, who was found weeks old and near death in a lot where someone was poisoning the cats. Her hind legs were paralyzed; she had maggots, worms and urine burns on her abdomen. The people who found her took her to another vet who wanted to euthanize her. Then they took her to Dr. G, who brought her back to life. I also reviewed this practice under Animal Health Center. My kittens were treated here a number of years ago when I was fostering them for a rescue. Even though this incident was several years back, I am going to leave a review here because the care my kittens received was so substandard. Dr. G is a very nice guy and he did help one of my kittens. However, the general standard of care provided by this office is very poor. One kitten came home from routine neuter surgery with a bloody leg. They did not put bandages on the IV sites on either cats' legs; that's usually routine after a surgery involving an IV or catheter. They did not provide post-op instructions, either written or verbal. One of the cats had stitches in the abdomen, but they did not provide an e-collar. The pain medicine they prescribed, Metacam, is actually considered very dangerous for cats. There are a ton of other pain medicines they could have prescribed for post-op pain that are considered much safer, such as buprenorphine. They applied one of the kittens' microchips so poorly that it immediately migrated down the cat's leg. And they couldn't find the tag with the serial number that goes with the microchip. Needless to say nobody ever called to see how they were doing after their surgery. And the exam and waiting rooms do not seem to be as clean as those I've seen at other veterinary practices. I could go on. The staff is horrendous, as well -- they're openly hostile and nasty. Once I ended up waiting an hour when I just needed to pick up antibiotics. When the kittens were neutered, nobody called to tell me they were keeping the cats overnight. When I arrived the next morning to pick them up, the receptionists were late to open and it took an hour for them to get around to retrieving my cats so we could leave. As soon as my adoption was finalized I got the kittens OUT of this practice and took them to a much better vet. read more

I was seeing some poor reviews on here, so wanted to add my experiences with this office! I'd like to start out by saying Dr. G is a really stellar guy. He gives a TON of his time to healing pets from shelters at a discounted rate. He has been most reasonably priced when I have had an issue. He's always busy, so there may be a wait, but when it's your turn he will take his time with your beloved, so you never feel rushed. He's thoughtful in his diagnoses and doesn't - forgive my verbage - screw you into having a million tests done. He saved my little kitten. She was better within DAYS after seeing Dr. G. -Our big boy was treated today and is on the mend. It's important for me to go with someone I TRUST and Dr.G is as good as they come. Ok. Just happened to click on Yelp to find the office phone number, which I had misplaced. Kind of surprised by the negative reviews. You find that anywhere where people are mad. Saw it for my personal internist as well. I have had nothing but good experiences with Dr. G. He always gives me plenty of time and deals with my questions thoroughly. He can take awhile to get back on questions that are not urgent. Yeah, I think he is overworked. The place is small, and if you pick a jammed up time, the wait is long. But I started off at a fancy office with more space, and was totally alienated by the vet and his other support docs. My dog is 12 and has had separation anxiety her whole life. Not an easy situation. Dr. G gets it. The staff has never given me a problem. I know dog rescuers who swear by his abilities and empathy. I would not hesitate to recommend him. read more

Dr Giangola is crazy busy, so if you take your animal there be patient. The staff is amazing and kind to all the animals , they try their hardest to keep things moving smoothly. Dr Giangola is a no nonsense Dr , very conservative and not out just to sell you things that are not necessary, he just wants to see your pet be well. Echoing other reviews: Dr. G is a very caring but his office staff and polices are abhorrent. I have always had to wait 45 minutes to see the vet. At my last appointment, I asked to reschedule because 25 min had gone by and the receptionist had no idea how much longer I might have to wait. I was told I could reschedule for a $25 fee. Get heckin' real. I asked if they were willing to lose a patient over it and the they said "that's the policy". K Bye felicia. Also, do NOT go to the other vet under any circumstances. I forget his name but I took my dog to him once when Dr G was not available and ended up with a $550 bill for anal gland expression. He insisted my senior dog needed a certain blood test because of his age but failed to mention it was a $400 test. Then, a week later I had to go back to Dr G because the anal gland was infected. You might as well just go to AMC where at least you get your money's worth. read more

I've been taking our two cats and two dogs to Dr. G. for the past six years. I am very, very happy with Dr. G. He's extremely caring, spends a lot of time to answer all of your questions, and doesn't rush through appointments (which is why there can be very long waits). I can't speak to whether they double-book or not, but in my experience, it seems that they allow 15 minutes between appointments, when in fact, Dr. G. will often spend closer to a half hour with each pet - which, in and of itself, is great; but obviously, appointments should be spaced further apart. The rude receptionist several reviewers mention is no longer there, and the office is definitely better run than it was six years ago, when we first starting going there. The waiting room is indeed very cramped, and no, the office isn't luxurious, but I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. G. himself. And, the staff is very nice now, too. I didn't initially choose Dr. G. for his lower prices, but the prices are definitely lower than most vets on the UES. Plus, they do give you a multi-pet discount, if applicable. I've just learned over the years to try and get the first or second appointment of the day to minimize (or eliminate) the wait. For what it's worth, when Dr. G. isn't there and another vet is working, there is no wait at all. Now, that may suggest that the other vets aren't good, but I've been very happy with the other vets I've seen there as well. It is also a testament to how much people like Dr. G., and how they're willing to put up with the waits so he can care for their pets. read more

Dr. G has personally saved the life of several of my kitties. On top of that he has always given me a discount and has been compassionate and kind. I live way across town and have at least 30 veterinarians between me and his office, but I wouldn't go anywhere else with my beloved animals. Let me start by saying I am the biggest animal lover and I am so incredibly grateful for all people who help rescues and donate their time and attention to those in need. Dr G is apparently one of those, or so I was told. About 6 months ago I started fostering a tiny little pitt bull for a shelter in Brooklyn. She was going to be put down, so we welcomed her into our home and quickly fell in love with her. We adopted her soon after. She was the sweetest dog in the world, but we knew we were getting an animal with some medical issues, however we were told that the shelter had an relationship with Dr. G and that anything we needed we could go to him. We knew that she had puppies in her past and she wasn't spayed, and in some of her mammary glands she had small masses. We were told we shouldn't be concerned and once the vet spayed her they would go away. So we tried to make an appointment at Dr. G's and no such luck. We couldn't get in to see him anytime in September and we were a little concerned that if we didn't get this taken care of she could have some serious problems, so we decided to take her to one of the mobile ASPCA vans that do free spay's for Pitt Bulls. We took her and were told by the wonderful ASPCA vets that these masses could possibly be cancerous and they could not spay her, she needed a biopsy because there was obviously more going on. We then took steps through the shelter to get an appointment with Dr G to get them aspirated in October, November rolls around and we hear nothing. I called Dr G's office to try and get some answers and none of my calls were returned. I had to call and email the shelter workers to find out, and we were told if there's no news that's good news. So we were told just take her to Dr G and get her spayed and he would just be able to removed everything. Throughout the end of November we could not get Dr G to call us back to save our lives! And no one would make an appointment with us because it had to be Dr. G that set the time and date. As December approached we noticed the masses were starting to look larger, her breathing was becoming heavier, and she wasn't really eating as much, we knew she needed to be looked at immediately. Called and called...and called explaining the details of our situation and nothing. I finally started to show up at the place and Dr. G was never there, so I left messages in person with the receptionist. Still nothing. Finally we just brought the dog up one Thursday and insisted he look at her. Dr. G was not there and the other Vet took a look, Xrayed her chest for the breathing and did some blood work and were told we would be called the next day. We got no call. So I called...again and again and again. Nothing was returned. At this point her mammary glands were so swollen and it even looked like some that hadn't been swollen before were now enlarged as well putting pressure on her bladder making her loose control, and she just couldn't get comfortable, not to mention she wouldn't touch her food. We became incredibly worried. So I again called every damn day multiple times and went in every day and basically ambushed them until Dr. G was there (DOING NOTHING I MIGHT ADD especially not returning any of my lets say 30 messages!) asking them to please explain what was wrong with our dog. No real explanation was given, but finally Dr. G said we could bring the dog in the next day to do some more blood work and run other tests. Dr G wouldn't be there, but the other vet would. My boyfriend took her up the next day and they ran more blood work and got a urine sample and got some very disturbing news. Apparently even though they had biopsied her back in October, they never technically said she was cancer free (even though we were never told this until last week) and just by looking at her swollen mammary glands he could tell whatever she had spread a lot within a week. They said they needed to keep her over night and get her fluids and treat her for possibly pneumonia. Also she may have kidney failure just by looking at her urine. Needless to say were couldn't sleep that night. The next morning me and my boyfriend went in to see her. Let me just say that the receptionist felt very sorry for us as soon as we stepped in the door. Our poor dog was so skinny at this point and just looked near death, which we shortly found out she was near death. Dr. G was not in, as per usual in our case, and the other vet was there and told us she just had so much going on we had a decision to make and that we could come back later and Dr. G would go over in detail what was wrong with her and we could decide. So we went back later and Dr. G explained absolutely nothing to me. NOTHING at all. We then took her and went down to Tinton Falls 24hr Vet Hospital and were told if she had been seen earlier it may have been treatable, but it was now to late. So we had to put her down. I will never forgive myself for not going somewhere else sooner. read more

Writing this review is difficult because Dr. G is pretty awesome but his staff is AWFUL. I went there several times and all of those times I had to wait for at least 3 hours to see Dr. G. Every time I called his office his secretary was full of attitude and would always put me on hold for 20 minutes then hang up. It is very sad that such a good vet has such awful staff. ZERO STARS! AWFUL STAFF AWFUL DOCTOR listen to this story. i was recommended by a friend to take my cat here for a neutering friday morning because of the price. so i thought why not. what could go wrong. boy was i wrong. look at my picture! when i got my cat back the tissue was sticking out because it was "filling with blood". it was so swollen. i asked the women at the front before i left if he needed a cone or medication, he is a a bit of a wild man so a cone may be a good idea. she said no in a snotty tone. so i left got home and the other side of where his ball would have been started to fill with this "tissue filling with blood" as well. so i called them and asked is this normal...now i have worked with animals MANY MANY years i have NEVER seen this. they said they never have seen this before. which dr g says they have all the time and the staff misinformed me about. so i took him back in on saturday and they had to put ice on it to keep the swelling down and that they had to push the tissue back into his scrotum. they do not know what they are doing!!!!!! ontop of all this they kept him in his tiny carrier the entire day and he went to the bathroom on himself. the staff said he was scared and soiled himself. sorry i dont think so. he has never done this. he is the alpha cat he is not scared of anyone, anything. oh and they ended up giving us medication and a cone which i had asked for the first time around. so take your animals there and see what happens. good luck! Please please please think twice before taking your animal here. there are better choices. the aspca mobile unit is a zillion times better then this place and they will even give shots and a cone included. and its cheaper. and its a lot cleaner. read more

Months after I left this vet swearing to never return, they have found a way to zing me again. I needed new heartguard medicine for my puppy, as I have run out of the supply Giangola's office gave me, so I asked my new vet for a supply. They asked if Dr. Giangola's veterinarians gave him a heartworm test (which all puppies should take before getting medication, as heartguard can be FATAL if they test positive.) I wasn't sure from my records so my new vet offered to call Dr. Giangola's office. The verdict? My puppy had NOT been given a heartworm test, and Dr. Giangola's receptionist claimed they only gave me one month's worth of heartguard. Guess again Dr. Giangola's staff. You gave me three. For all those who are serious about the care of their pets, STEER CLEAR. Seriously, RUN AWAY. read more

First, I LOVE this vet. He's the best vet ever. Dr. Giangola changed my life for the better 17 years ago when I started going to him. I trust him like no other vet in the world. Why the one star/bad review? First, the female receptionist is hostile, rude and unprofessional. There's a new male receptionist as of February 2018 and he's lovely, much better than the female one as of late 2017. But that's not good enough and I'm disgusted with this practice as of late, and had to warn people. The waits have always been long but until now it was more than worth it to work with Dr. G, a first rate vet. Dr. G had been awesome over the years. But he seems to be changing - suddenly and inexplicably - based on my recent experience with him. The abhorrent treatment I've received in recent months starting when his Brooklyn practice closed down with no warning and despite my cat having started at the Manhattan location in 2001 and migrating to Brooklyn for convenience sake, being booted as a Manhattan location customer with no explanation - solely because we used his Brooklyn location more than the Manhattan one and he's "not taking his Brooklyn customers in Manhattan". I made an appointment with Dr. G for a Friday, then got a cryptic call on a Wednesday evening saying "please call us about your upcoming appointment" (no explanation), and the office was closed Thursday so I was unable to find out why they had called and planned my day around the scheduled appointment. I tried the office number over 10 times during their office hours the Friday morning of my afternoon appointment, with no one picking up. Hours later I finally reached someone and learned that they had cancelled me out the day of the appointment and clearly weren't trying to bother letting me know. When I asked why, I was given no reason, just that this is the "policy". Had I missed the call and shown up, I'd have wasted hours of my work day for nothing. Completely unacceptable. They have a $25 cancellation policy if you cancel under 24 hours before the appointment. It obviously doesn't go both ways and they can waste peoples' time without consequence. Dr. G seems to no longer value his longtime customers who think so highly of him. This practice seems to be changing for the worse, fast. I'm horrified by how shabbily I was treated, and how I was turned away without explanation after so many years of being a good customer. I hope his treatment of his customers changes for the better, or he deserves to lose a lot of business. read more

My first experience with Dr. G was as good as it gets. I rescued an abandoned cat from an eviction performed at a building I manage. Dr. G gave him a thorough exam, took the time to speak with me about what will need to do to keep my new little guy healthy and happy, and made the whole visit pleasant in general. Yes, Dr G's waiting area is tiny and definitely not luxurious but his staff is great and he's the best! What better recommendation can I give - my dog is 17 years old, still enthusiastic and happy to be alive and I credit Dr G. He doesn't over medicate or over test. He's sensible and his approach has worked beautifully for my dog. I feel like we're a team, working to keep Chloe on her four little legs as long as possible. read more

I can't believe some of these bad reviews. Yes the waiting area is small, but Dr. Giangola knows his medicine and is able to deal with nervous animals beautifully. I have been going to him for over 10 years. The office is hectic at times with phones and clients but if you have patience, your pet will receive great care. Dr. G will take the time to explain things to you and has a great sense of humor. I drive and parking is quite difficult. Dr. G has been there for me. Another vet works in his office and I cannot speak much about who that might currently be. I think I understand though, he has a very busy office and the people happy with him are not bothering to post reviews. Dr G is the most caring animal doctor in the area. I have been going here for 8 years with my dog and trust him 100%. He is caring and takes his time , answers any questions you have and treats my dog as he would his own. Terrible. He came very highly recommended but as soon as I saw his examination table that was chest high with no steps for the pets to get up I was nervous. Then when he picked up my dog with one hand under her belly and one hand yanking her collar up I was convinced I was in the wrong place. When she freaked out midair he put her down and told us he would need to muzzle her because she was dangerous. Maybe its me but if I choked animals I would expect them to get angry in return. Needless to say we found another vet. PS aside from the choke she had just recently been spayed and had fresh stitches on her stomach, right where his other hand was. He didn't do the spay himself but when we walked in we told him when and where the spaying was done. All in all a bad experience for me and my dog. read more

It's true you do have to wait sometimes & the office waiting room is tiny but what is that compared to the loving, care & correct diagnosis & medication to keep your pet alive. My maltese was near death after having his teeth cleaned at another vet's where he ended up w/ a collapsed treachea. He was coughing & very weak after 4 days seriously close to death. Dr. G took an x-ray & discovered my dog had CHF. Thank the stars a resucer told me to take hiim to Dr. G , It is now 6 months later he is still with me. Lots of meds and he may not be here with me much longer but I have been grateful every single day to have my dog with me. I am not a wealthy woman & the Dr. made it affordable for me to keep my dear one close, comfortable these last 6 months. I'm not sure how much longer he will be with me but I will be forever grateful to Dr. G & his polite staff for all their help managing a very difficult case. read more

We took our 10 year old dog in for her first visit with Dr. G about a month ago and decided to get her teeth cleaned as well. Thank God we did, and thank God Dr. G was thorough enough in looking at her mouth while she was under that he caught a melanoma in her mouth. After biopsy and further tests it looks like we caught it early - his referral to an oncologist at Blue Pearl was terrific and Dr. G is going to perform the follow-up surgery to clean out the spot - with minimal discomfort for my dog. I am so lucky he caught this. He has a tiny storefront on 1st Avenue, I know it doesn't look like much, but there is a deep well of knowledge there and he is a terrific vet. Dr. G MAY be a good doctor, but he clearly does not have any filter when it comes to hiring compassionate and respectful staff. First they tell me that they didn't have my dog's records, when in fact they had... THEN she gives me the wrong fax #, when she's worked there for several years. After I get there, a very overweight woman looks at my dog and grunts and says "umph, chubby.." They dont' tell you anything as we all pile up in the waiting room (talk about TRIPLE BOOKING...). Then they repeat the same BS to you over and over again, while these poor animals are over anxious and trembling after waiting 2 hours. Don't bother!!! Awful. read more

Dr. G, as we are taught to call him, is overworked. He has at least two offices, one in Brooklyn and one in upper Manhattan, the 80's. Anjellicle cats uses him for the discount and recommends him. The wait in his cramped waiting room can be three hours. So his overhead can not be as much as Feline Health, for example. I had one especially bad experience with him, where two and a half hours after my "appointment," he flushed my cat's bladder without sedation, in order to get home earlier. It's been a long time but I can still hear the scream. No one is allowed in the kennel area because it is sad and filthy. I will not return and I actually returned my cat, because Dr. G insisted on surgery to feminize the kitty, that I could not trust him to do. Besides he said "cats always scream! Sedation is dangerous." Do you usually do this without sedation," I asked. "No," he said. read more

We also can't say enough about how much we love and trust Dr G: smart, kind, knowledgeable with great instincts - well worth the car rental to drive from the west village to the upper east side. I am picky about vets, ask a lot of questions and expect a smart, thoughtful opinion and approach. Over a decade-plus, I have come to trust Dr G completely - and although, admittedly, you will wait a bit in the waiting room, the care your pet receive is well, well worth it. Doctor Giangola really cares about the animals, & does not overcharge for his services. Be prepared to wait.... the office is always busy & appointments run late.. but it is worth it to get such a gret vet. His office does work with many rescue groups, so they are constatly taking care of emergencies. read more

I have been going to Dr. Giangola for 4 years here in NYC. Our cousin is an animal rescuer and recommended we go to him. we have treated 2 dogs and a kitty with him since. Contrary to some of the bad reviews, he does great work, and the wait time is not a problem - we show up, we wait a little, and we get seen by the doc. If you want to truly know about him, look at the "filtered reviews." Yelp tends to filter out the good reviews if a business doesn't subscribe to them. read more

I have been using Dr. G's for a few years now, both for a guinea pig and for two dogs. The good news is that he is very reasonable in terms of fees, and you can just walk in and wait to see a vet. The bad news is that the office is tiny and the waiting room can be crowded. The people are pretty nice and Dr. G is very empathetic and seems to be competent enough. I'm not sure I go there for something very serious or unusual, but for routine stuff he's my go-to vet. read more
