Keep the little vets in business, seek them out! And avoid potential disaster with Small Door (where you'll never talk to the same doc twice and you're just a number). read more

SmallDoor has seriously declined in the past few years. Their focus seems to be more on running up your bill than on your pet's well-being. They're quick to recommend treatments or products they have in stock, but they don't seem to prioritize what's actually needed. The "transparent pricing" they advertise simply means they show you the bill before asking for payment--often for items that aren't necessary or helpful. For context, we're not opposed to paying for necessary veterinary care. When our dog was young, he was hospitalized for autoimmune encephalitis, and we gladly covered two weeks of admission, an MRI, and all related care. But SmallDoor is a different story. After three and a half years, we tried to leave due to this pattern. They refused to write us a prescription for a medication our dog has been on for seven years to cover the week between our departure and the start of treatment at a new vet. To clarify, this is a medication for his liver with no potential for abuse, and we were on the verge of running out because their final prescription was only for half the usual amount (likely because we chose not to renew our membership). Over the years, we've paid SmallDoor a significant amount for medically necessary visits, but the moment we were no longer considered a source of income, they refused to show any flexibility. There was no reason for them to withhold the prescription--especially since we had just been in for a visit. They were simply punishing us for leaving. It's disappointing because what should be a place focused on the care of pets has become more about profit. read more

A mutual client sent a picture to her vet at this facility regarding a lesion on the ear, and was told it was just a scratch from playing with her other cat. When I arrived at the clients home, I knew that it was ringworm just by looking at it, but I could not fully say without testing. She just adopted these kitties from Best Friends Animal Society. I advised the client to follow up with her vet about testing it (fungal culture vs DTM, vs fluorescent light) instead of sending another picture. She followed my advice, and it was in fact ringworm. I worked in veterinary medicine for 13 years, and was able to make reasonable recommendations, and thankfully these kitties received the proper treatment right away. However, the fact that this was not properly handled to begin with shows that Small Door is just a chain of corporate practices that does not practice thorough veterinary medicine. Diagnosing through photos is not ideal, and pets should really be seen in office. This mistake on their behalf cost me a reservation with this client, because I could no longer care for this clients cats. Which also makes things challenging for the client because her flight is tomorrow, and she now has no one to care of her cats. It is very likely that this client has to cancel her family vacation during Thanksgiving break. Ringworm is a zoonosis transmissible to people and other pets, and I cannot risk other pets or my own being exposed to fungal spores from my clothing or items that come in contact with these infected cats. I gave the client an electronic pamphlet on ringworm via veterinary partners (VIN) which is a reputable veterinary website all vets use. This is not even my job anymore and I'm doing it more effectively than this practice. I will be letting people know not to go to Small Door chains when asked for veterinary recommendations and will always bring this up as an example of why there are better options, and why I do not think they practice even decent medicine. read more

While our first visit was still filled with anxiety for Elvis, their team handled him with care and provided just the right amount of prescribed medication to help him feel more at ease. After his housemate passed away, we became very concerned about his health. We decided to run all the necessary tests--a process we had previously done in LA, where it cost us a significant amount of money. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Small Door's pricing was actually half of what I expected. What impressed me the most was how they communicated. They sent the test results and the doctor's opinions in a well-organized PDF summary. On top of that, they handled the insurance claims on our behalf--a task that's typically a lot of work, especially when you travel often with your pet. I recently signed up for their annual membership during a Black Friday promotion and will see how it goes moving forward. I was a fan of small door vet for about 2 years as I had my dogs Soju and Jin signed up, and I even referred other people to them. They had a great monthly pricing model that covered preventative medicine and visits. Well they changed their membership pricing and model WITHOUT TELLING ME. I used to pay $89 per month per dog for basically everything. The new model is to pay $169 for the year, which only includes a vet visit.... If I wanted the other services like preventative medicine and treatments, I would have to add the bundle services (about $800 total) for the year and pay all this upfront in one payment. IF I HAD KNOWN ABOUT THIS WITH ENOUGH NOTICE (LET'S SAY INFORMING ME 3-4 MONTHS BEFORE SO I COULD SAVE MONEY TO PAY IN ONE GO) I WOULD NOT HAVE AN ISSUE. HOWEVER, I was charged $169 (i assumed their prices just increased) and then at the vet appointment for my oldest dog, the office manager apologized as she even noticed that no one communicated this change to me. An email was not sent to me. A phone call was not made to me. I literally found out at my dog's vet appointment. Then I left without evening seeing the vet because I was so annoyed. Then the next day, I actually get an email that my youngest dog's membership would change with everything expected to be paid upfront. The funny thing is, my youngest dog was on the old pricing model and the office didn't even realize that .So I found out about the pricing change and their office found out my other dog wasn't properly updated on their new pricing model all at my vet appointment. I was a member for about 2 years and they treated me this way. No notice about pricing changes and the expectation everything (annual fee + bundled services) is to paid on day 1. I tried getting a refund on my oldest dog but I was told I missed the window to cancel. I took my pet for an annual checkup, and honestly, it felt like all they cared about was the money. The vet was very experienced, but after discussing my pet's health, she offered me a wellness plan, making me feel like I had no other option because my total bill was going to be around $1,000, and the plan was also $1,000 (even though my pet only needed 2 of the 6 vaccinations included in the plan). The only extra benefits I would get from the wellness plan were two nail trims and an extra urine/fecal test for parasites, which honestly didn't make any sense. I told them that the prices didn't match the prices I was quoted over the phone, and they told me that no one should be giving prices over the phone. Why? Because they know that once people are at the appointment, they're practically obligated to use their services. It felt like a waste of time. I've been to other vets in Brooklyn that use the same lab for annual exams and charge three times less than this, and at least they don't make it so obvious that it's all about the money. I took my dog Archie in for a concerned visit today at the Williamsburg location. I have never been more disappointed in a vet. To start, the vet seemed very offended by my dog's anxiety whining. She seemed like it was getting on her nerves. Dog owners are already slightly embarrassed when this happens and to have a vet so off put by this was even more uncomfortable for me as a dog parent. Next, in the exam, she acted like she didn't want to touch him whenever I was in concerning a sprained muscle. She was almost like it was embarrassing to check for something this minor. Part 2 of making a dog owner even more uncomfortable. Third, she accused me of not giving him his monthly flea/tick preventative without explaining. After explaining to her that I give him these meds on a monthly cadence, she then explained that tick disease could be the reason why he was limping. Fourth, I was attempting to ask her about if his meds were okay and if there was anything I could do about his anxiety. She tried to tell me that I need to see a behaviorist asap and the meds were fine maybe to switch him, maybe not. This is not an explanation you want from a caretaker for your pet. Fifth, she told me by calling my home vet was a mistake. She said no vet should give a dog aspirin. I was offended at this because she didn't even know the context before jumping to conclusions. All in all, this vet has completely ruined the small door experience for me. It's sad because I loved the first vet so much and the ease of small door. Honestly, contemplating not renewing due to the care I received today. It was not pet obsessed or owner centric. You all should quality check your vets on regular basis because I wouldn't want anyone to feel the way I did when I left today. read more

Rude rude rude. I had to take my foster dog here as the place I normally go was too booked up. She's a two year old husky, we had known each other less than 48 hours. I had never had her in a car before. My car can not hold a kennel in it, so that was not an option. Anyways, she did pretty good but it was still stressful. We left Bushwick, Morgan L, super close at 3:30 for our 4:00pm. Between Kellog Diner and the BQE just that block it took us six stop lights to get through because people kept blocking the intersection. At 4:02 after missing the light twice I called to inform them we were stuck in traffic and we were coming the fastest we could but it was out of our hands. The guy was very rude and said "We only allow for ten minutes or we'll give your spot up." To which I tried to beg and explain I couldn't do anything and should be there by 4:10 anyways. He was rude and hung up. I got there, parked in the middle of the street to bring her in. Nearly blocking traffic, you can see my car and my franticness trying to get her in and park this way to make our appointment. I walked in at 4:11, the front desk woman was closing someone else out and finished her convo with them, I figured I'd be fine. No, she did so for two more minutes, looked at her watch and said "You're 13 minutes late we can't take you" So she made me wait, she made me later than I was then blamed me. They said they'd give me a 5pm, so we waited, I wasn't seen until 5:15 - so much for their policy. The vet herself was nice, but she did mess up weighing the dog and I had to step in. Overall location sucks. The front desk & people on the phone are beyond rude. And they are not flexible, which is unacceptable if you are a dog parents foster or full time, getting to the vet and being at the vet is often stressful. Have some freaking heart. I took my rescued French bulldog (a breed infamous for health problems) in when I got him and the doctors answered all of my questions, addressed my concerns, put me at ease and did their best to calm my poor pup during our visits. Their text service with the staff to answer questions is very prompt and they do a great job of following up to ensure you and your pet are doing ok. They asked for feedback after my very first visit and I did have some constructive feedback around the first doctor I saw- they called to address my concerns and took my feedback seriously. Dont go to this place! I had booked an initial appointment for my dog about a week or so ago for tomorrow and had completely forgotten that i did so. I have received no reminders until I got a text today where i needed to complete the intake form. I received the text at 2:20pm. (My appointment time was 2pm tomorrow). When I saw it and responded i had let them know something had come up and i had to cancel. They informed me they will charge a fee and asked to confirm if i wanted to cancel given i had given them less than 24h notice. THEY SENT A REMINDER ONLY AFTER THE DEADLINE HAS PASSED SO THEY CAN ENSURE PEOPLE CANNOT CANCEL AND THEY CAN CONTINUE TO CHARGE THEM A CANCELLATION FEE. I had asked why they havent sent a reminder ahead of time and the response i got is that they will charge me no matter what given its less than 24h. I didnt even confirm my cancellation and they went ahead and cancelled my appointment and by the looks of it, charged me $50. Do not go here - there is zero customer service, the management could not care less about the customers, and they only care about getting money from you any way they can. read more

i've been taking my cat, Otis, to Small Door Veterinary in Williamsburg for over a year now and i truly can't say enough good things about it. as a feral cat/ rescue, he can be extremely anxious and aggressive at the vet, but Dr. Marissa has gone above and beyond to make sure he feels comfortable when he comes in for appointments - she truly has the magic touch. and not only does he feel comfortable, but i also get to enjoy the experience. everyone is so kind and welcoming, the pricing is fair and clearly broken down during each appointment, and the space itself is gorgeous - not to mention there's always coffee and spindrift! the telehealth is also a game changer, as a lot of the time i don't need to go in for an appointment and can simply message the medical team when i have any questions or concerns. i will never take otis to another vet and am so glad that i found small door!!! read more

I don't think I've ever written a Yelp review before but today I took my senior pup to see Dr. Marissa San Filippo at Small Door Vet in Williamsburg. It was one of our best veterinary experiences in ~15 years, so I wanted to share. One of the reasons I chose Small Door Vet and Dr. San Filippo is because of the doctor's experience that was included in her bio on the website. She went to the University of Edinburgh, one of the best vet school's in the world (and where Darwin studied!). I was not disappointed - not only was she incredibly thorough, taking the time to check my pup out head to toe but she also thoroughly asked about his medical history and asked probing questions about his health that resulted in a more robust and thoughtful treatment program than we've gotten from other vets. She also might have corrected a dangerous misdiagnosis that we're following up on. The treatment plan she recommended was reasonable and well-explained and the procedures we discussed for the future all make sense and like things we should do. No surprising add-ons or things that don't seem necessary, and no jumping to expensive procedures before we do some testing to see if we really need them. Also, shout out to the receptionist for being super friendly and welcoming. And have to mention the space which is brand new, super clean, and full of light. Glad to have found a veterinarian for my elderly pup that is so thoughtful, engaged, and caring. 10/10 would recommend. read more

In two times we have visited, they spent more time trying to upsell costly treatments and procedures than addressing the pups current issues. I had a great first experience at this vet. I like that it wasn't too crowded, and I was able to get an appointment day of which in the area has proven difficult. I just moved to the area, but when a situation came up I was looking for a new vet. I called my old vet in the West Village (who I am still in love with), but their fecal test was going to be $95 and be a trip to get there. When I called Small Door the representative that answered the phone was so helpful and polite walking me through my options and explained the price of the fecal test to be in the $60s. So overall, very fair price for services. Although, the website said "onsite lab" but I believe they mentioned there they would still need to send it out. I joined honestly only because of the free trial exam. It made joining as a cat at the lowest tier a no-loss situation since I would have had to pay that exam fee at any vet. I will say, as nice as the facilities and staff were, I am going to have to consider renewing next year for the cost of membership. The lowest tier has no perks outside of the facilities itself, so without the exam it is a heft decision. It would be nice if they threw in something like 1/2 of annual visit, or free nail clippings or flea prevention. That would help justify the renewal cost. The take home toys for the pets are a cute bonus :) read more

I had an appointment with Dr. Fotios Bris and was blown away by his level of care and attentiveness. He spent almost an hour with us and answered all of my questions thoroughly. I could really sense he cared about my cat and wanted to help as best he could. The front desk staff was extremely friendly and excitedly greeted each pet as they arrived for their appointments. I was initially flying to Turkey - while my experience getting the necessary documents with them was good and all the paperwork was done accurately/properly, my plans changed last minute so I needed an International Health Certificate for Azerbaijan instead. The hospital said they couldn't do it because they didn't feel comfortable with the protocol for this country? Luckily University Animal Hospital helped me and provided me with form 7001 punctually. They seemed much more experienced and knowledgeable about international flying rules. Small Door is expensive and with the membership fee and all, I was expecting better service. Other than that though, Dr. Elvina and the staff are knowledgeable, and good listeners. They answered all my questions, available via email quickly. Small Door also was able to take me in an hour before my appointment, which I appreciate, because my cat was drooling. Also, they were very gentle with my cat. read more

I never thought I'd actually enjoy bringing my dog to the vet! The staff here is so friendly and our appointment started right on time. Love that they stick to schedule but also allow you tons of time to ask questions and go over all of the prices and treatments with the doctor before anything is done. As a first-time dog owner, I really appreciate how they keep all of the care instructions and upcoming vaccines and tests in the app for me so I don't need to keep track of everything myself. I recently decided to try out small door because my vet changed owners and I have been hearing all about it on social media and from friends/acquaintances. The vet (Dr Marissa) spent a full 45 minutes with me and my cat Oyster and discussed her treatment approach. Dr Marissa wanted to work together to find a solution to Oyster's food aggression problem rather than telling me some suggestions and not following up. This is the first time I have ever reviewed anything on yelp. It takes a lot to get me this upset. I brought my little puppy in for what I believed was related to an accident which potentially caused soft tissue issues. As Small Door didn't have an appointment available they said they could see my puppy in between appointments (which doubles the costs of the visit). I was prescribed an aggressive treatment plan that was completely inaccurate and may have even caused further harm to my 6 month year old mini golden doodle. Additionally proposing to add $1400 of unnecessary costs to the bill. I am highly certain my puppy wasn't even offered water in the 5 hours he was there, as he ran towards his water bowl like he was drenched upon returning to our apartment (which is minutes from the clinic). When I complained the staff opted to gaslight me rather than apologize. The clinic is aesthetically beautiful but the quality of care is atrocious. Lastly, I believe they have signed a brand deal with Purina as the vet also recommended substandard dog food during Fitzroy's first visit. read more
