The saltiness of the chip really cuts the heat of the hot honey and blends the flavors well. Wish they'd said the menu was changing -- it would've saved the surprise. The options felt a bit limited this time, and while everything was fine, it wasn't quite what I expected. This place is interesting. It is located right off Washington Ave. and doesn't have an inside front. The outside front has a bunch of standing room seating. You can order online or order at the window with a lady. When we went on a mid Sunday, half the pastry items were sold out. I guess if you snooze you lose. The place was featuring different weekly soft serves. We got a birthday cake ice cream with a croissant cone. It was so big. The soft serve didn't taste like birthday cake ice cream to me. The croissant with the ice cream in the middle was delicious. I really wish it had been only like an ice cream croissant sandwich feel to it. read more

An excellent almond croissant! Nice flaky bread, very nicely made, and less on the sweet side than other shops, but definitely sweet enough. This pastry didn't leave me with that sickening, greasy feeling like other shops. Service with a smile. Give it a try! Other pastries that looked intriguing: mortadella with pistachio, blueberry lemon, and something with mango. They have unusual ice cream flavors, too, and right next door is a very popular pork sandwich shop. This is all takeout, so be prepared for that. tl;dr this bakery's bite-sized treats feel underwhelming and overpriced; stick to the magnificent pork sandwiches at its sister storefront Small Oven Pastry Shop and Porco's Porchetteria are contiguous storefronts owned and operated by Chad Durkin, a nationally-renowned pastry chef. Small Oven represents the confectionary complement of the operation; the bakery is best known for its rotating lineup of whimsical petit fours, but the team also crafts dessert bars, cookies, pastries, and coffees. Although Porco's is my preferred pork-sandwich purveyor in Philadelphia, I only just made it a point to try Small Oven. You can't miss Small Oven's baby blue facade against the drab Washington Street backdrop. Both the bakery and sandwich shop are takeout-only affairs -- for Small Over, ring the doorbell at the window to the left. The converted doorway has multiple shelves displaying the entire pastry lineup and a laminated beverage menu. The adjacent walls and nearby planters are outfitted with narrow wooden counters if you can't wait until home to enjoy your food. I was ordering a porchetta sandwich online, and I noticed that Porco's shared its ordering portal with Small Oven. Intrigued by the options, I added two Bite-sized Desserts to my order: the Pecan Passion Fruit Bombe and the Mocha Mousse. The bombe showcased the most lip-smackingly delicious passionfruit mousse that I may ever enjoy in this lifetime; however, it was brought down by a brittle, clashing chocolate shell. Meanwhile, the mocha mousse did feature semi-sweet flavors of coffee and chocolate but was too restrained to making a strong, single-bite impression; further, I would've preferred if it was denser. The packaging was impeccable. Both pastries were plated precisely on wafer cookies, which in turn were icing'ed down to mini cake boards and placed into a sturdy, cubical cardboard box. Even after being bagged with my heavy sandwich, the pastries remained picture-perfect. Each petit four ran $3.75 and represents 2-3 true bites. As far as those bites actually tasted, both pastries were good -- but not great. For the price, you almost certainly would get more bang for your buck from the remaining, normal-sized pastry lineup. If I ever order from Small Oven again, I will be sinking my teeth into one of the hefty dessert bars -- but only if I'm already at the store to indulge in a top-notch Porco's sandwich. read more

This place is so underrated! Coffee is always on point and their pastries are divine. I can't believe they aren't constantly sold out. Get yourself a cardamom bun and a masala chai on a rainy day. Service can be a tad slow if they get busy so definitely order online for pickup if you can. I've been wanting to try the soft serve and work weekends, so I made a pre-work trip for post-breakfast sweets. They had a canopy set-up for their order window, due to drizzle. I got the strawberry matcha cookie, one coconut cookie, and the chocolate stout/gorgonzola swirl. Customer service was super personable. The soft serve was ok. The chocolate stout had good flavor, but the Gorgonzola tasted like vanilla. I even dug in the cup to see if it was a fluke. Was really looking forward to the funky combo. The strawberry matcha cookie was really balanced. It has chewy texture and is strikingly true to what a strawberry matcha beverage tastes like. The one coconut is a little more crumbly in texture and cakey. Excellent coconut flavor. I'd definitely recommend trying a baked good. Maybe skip the soft serve. read more

Their mini desserts (seasonal) are so adorable and tasty. It's hard to turn down these aesthetic bite sized goodies. They sell them for around $3.75 per pop but if you get the half dozen it's $3 each! They also have cookies and other savory & sweet pastries and bread. I didn't realize this place was attached to a cafe... so they also serve regular food next door. We got the spiced apple, hummingbird (pineapple and banana), white chocolate pear, and the raspberry rye. The lady gave us chocolate praline instead of the raspberry rye. My favorite is the white chocolate pear. The flavor was the most unique since pear isn't a common fruit used in desserts. Least favorite was the chocolate praline since the flavor was so common. It was good but nothing special. Highly recommend getting the petite desserts in bundles. It's so addicting you'll definitely want to eat more than one. I tried two pastries (ham+gruyere croissant and a pain au chocolat) and an almond ricotta cookie with lemon glaze from this bakery. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed with the pastries--they were flakey but dry and not as buttery and delicious as I expected. The almond ricotta cookie was soft and pretty large with a strong lemon flavor (I couldn't really taste any almond but I'm assuming the almond was the type of flour used maybe?). Anyway, not a pastry shop to go out of your way for but maybe the sandwiches are better! read more

I came around 4 PM on Sunday to try their mixed berry and mascarpone swirl soft serve. I came late, and they were out of the mascarpone by that time, so I just got plain mixed berry. I'll be honest, I didn't like it, but not because it was bad- I thought it was very tart and needed some sweetness to cut the tartness, which the mascarpone would have done. That's not on them though- it's just my personal preference. Because I didn't eat much of the ice cream, I then went and got a hand pie, which I thought was absolutely delicious. I will certainly be back to try more soft serve flavors and pastries- I'll just be sure to get there early so they don't run out! Service was wonderful, and everyone was kind and friendly. read more

My friend and I were super excited to try out Small Oven Pastry Shop as soon as they opened because of how beautiful the mini pastries looked. Turns out they were not only beautiful, but also delicious, well crafted, and unique! The sight of the pastries and their descriptions on the menu were enough to make our mouths start watering. Each piece is $3.50. We shared the Apple Tarte Tatin, Pistachio Tea Cake, and the Hazelnut Paris Brest. All were amazing, but the Pistachio Tea Cake was the one that blew me away. Shortbread crust, pistachio frangipane, and pistachio ganache - holy moly! The Hazelnut Paris Brest wasn't my favorite but it could've been because the crunchy texture made it difficult to eat without spraying crumbs everywhere. I can already tell that Small Oven is going to be extremely detrimental to my wallet, but boy, is it worth it! The sweet treats here are beautiful, intricate, and delicious! My friend and I came here on a Saturday afternoon and got 3 mini pastries to split. My favorite was the Apple Tarte Tatin (pressed caramelized apples, caramel mousse, rosemary sucree). The rosemary sucree was so delicious and gave an incredible depth to the tarte tatin. I also loved the Pistachio Tea Cake (shortbread crust, pistachio frangipane, pistachio ganache) - it was so smooth and creamy. Finally, we had the Hazelnut Paris Brest (toasted hazelnut pate choux with praline mousseline, hazelnut crispy). While this was probably my least favorite of the 3, it was still gorgeous. I can't wait to come back and work my way through the rest of these delicate and delicious desserts! read more

So nothing but truth here and that's what my review is about- my rating of my overall experience at your establishment, as it should be. Also want to point out I did not tell people not to go here anymore, just don't buy the cake slices because they are outrageously expensive and mediocre. I also review the taste of the items, as It's all relevant. Also Please understand I did say something at the moment, how do you think I learned it was $20! I didn't see a QR code, might have overlooked it But I did have the paper menu and there was the chalkboard menu (or whatever it was) and we also looked online later and none of those things mentioned the cost of the cake at that time that I could see. Your own response to the original review just confirms: 1. the cake slice is not prominently displayed 2. That the cost is actually $15 (still ridiculous for slice of cake) which means I was also incorrectly charged for the item. 3. That I was giving my patronage to your small business while we are in a pandemic 4. I didn't demand a refund from your business (because we are in a pandemic and you are a small business). So if you are upset about my truthful review that warned people about a slice of cake (because again we are in a pandemic and people might not have $20 to spend on cake slice). Acknowledge I might have been overcharged and not offer to look into it to correct it. Not take into consideration to maybe just put the price somewhere people can easily see it irl. I have a really a bad sweet tooth and walked like twenty blocks for a pickup order. Is this dedication? Anyways this place has been on my radar for their super pretty sweets. I ordered a selection of 8 cold pastries and two macarons. The macarons were raspberry and salted caramel! Good price at $3 for 2. The cold pastries were super good although I wish I was a larger variety. In the eight I got, there were only three varieties, the pistachio tea cake, creme brûlée tart, and chocolate tart. Anyway, they also have a lot of dry pastries like croissants and galettes as well as baking pantry items. If I didn't live so far away, I'd definitely come here more! read more

This place isn't really close to me but it's worth the trip when I need a reallllly delicious treat. The pastries and sweets at Small Oven Pastry Shop are here to satisfy all my sweet tooth cravings. They were open the morning of Thanksgiving so I preordered a chai cinnamon bun, apple cider cookie, and slice of pumpkin tart. I know they will all be incredible because I have tried so many of their pastries and literally each one is perfection (both the way they taste and the way they look). The employees are really nice people too. I also like how you can order online, or right at the window. Easy. There are some bar height little counters out front where you can hang out and eat your pastries in case you just can't wait until you get home (guilty). read more

I tried a medley of treats from Small Oven at a Super Bowl party I attended back in February and they were all delicious. Today, my husband and I treated ourselves to some breakfast pastries - an absolutely perfect chocolate croissant for him, and a delicious slice of coffee cake for me. In addition to baked goods, Small Oven also offers salads and paninis. I tried one of the salads last week and it was super fresh and satisfied the need for something healthy. Best of all, their sister business, Porco's, has a take out window so you can place your order online and pick up at the window without ever going inside. I love Small Oven and Porco's (the establishment is two identities under one roof with a window that you order from.) The leek and feta croissant is my favorite- I crave it often. Their sandwiches are solid and are served on fresh, generous portions of bread. The salads are actually worth buying because they don't skimp and I have yet to find wilted leaves. Their soups are super tasty and make a quick and affordable lunch. The ice cream in the summer time is much awaited in our household. We're really happy that they're so close by and that the quality is so good. The staff are so sweet and they're efficient with getting orders out on time. read more

We ordered in the mist of quarantine 2020 for pickup; a dozen of small cakes/pastries, OG, breakfast sammie on croissant, and a macaronsandwich. They were out of those and replaced it with a chocolate croissant and cookies sandwich which was more than generous. The OG and breakfast sammie was more on the greasy side for me but the boyfriend loved it. Definitely for someone with a big tummy. The dozen cakes was quite a sight and I would pay for them again. Small Oven is attached to Porcos Porchetteria, and is alone worthy of a stop! Their bakery creations are absolutely gorgeous and totally drool worthy! They sell them per piece or $36 for a bakers dozen. They're total show-stoppers!! We sampled the apple tart with rosemary shortbread and the chocolate caramel eclair. Insanely Delish!! We also sampled Nutella filled to order fresh donuts, which are only available on the weekends. Hot and outstanding! We also sampled their hearty, crispy ciabatta rolls that come with their signature Margherita Buffalina pizzas. These are also only available on the weekends!! The baklava cupcakes with cream shooters are up next for us! You honestly can't go wrong here!! They have all of your caffeinated favorites to go along with your treats, as well as non alcoholic drafts! Also, it can't hurt to grab a pork or veggie sammy to-go for later either! Really solid spot to grab some pastries and is located right next to Dock Street Brewery. There's a small communal table inside for seating, but that's about it. Hopefully they'll add some seating outside as it warms up. In terms of the actual pastries everything looked amazing so it was hard to choose what to try first. I got the pistachio tea cake and the apricot praline; both of which were really well made. I usually prefer more dense and less sweet desserts, so the pistachio tea cake was perfect.
