I've been to smallSUGAR a couple times. This place provides great service, good prices and a chic venue. The bakery is tucked inside the alley and has plenty of seating inside and outside. Prices are fair, no tip needed and the selection is great! I appreciate how friendly the service is. My favorites are the bread plate and Hong Kong Milk Tea. +1 Vibe +1 Taste +1 Presentation +1 Service +1 Value

I was pleasantly surprised to find this cute coffee shop! I ordered the Avocado toast with bacon, soft egg side, almond croissant, cinnamon cream cheese danish, and a small coffee. Everything was fresh and delicious. The coffee was one of my favorite roasts in Columbia a great balance. I waited almost 10 minutes for a basic drip coffee. I came for the coffee, however left with a new cute place to visit. This place had plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. I was also told they have sister restaurants, so hoping to try those.

Great breakfast spot when you want something new, fancy, and worth culture. Excellent fusion of breakfast items from around the world.

This was my second time visiting smallSUGAR, but my first trying their savory options. So while I was expecting quality, I found myself surprised just how much I enjoyed my breakfast. After placing my order I found a seat outside in their lovely covered space surrounded by greenery and waited for them to bring my drink and food to the table. My London Fog was pleasant, and while nothing about it stood out, I'd order it again if I was craving one. The bread plate and Shakshouka-ish, however, were worth the visit alone. Both ran around $15 and were packed with flavor - the stewed tomatoes of the Shakshouka-ish even made my nose run due to some welcome heat. It's clear why some have made smallSUGAR a staple.

Awesome food and service! Recommend the shakshouka-ish and strawberry pistachio pastry. The Hong Kong milk tea is also pretty solid. The shakshouka had depth of flavor with many different seasonings. Egg was cooked perfectly. Pastry was lightly sweetened and very flaky. Would definitely come back to try other dishes.

I've heard about smallsugar for years and this is the first time I have visited. Let me tell you this place is incredible! Everything we got was amazing. So fresh and delicious. The staff was so kind and accommodating and the location was unexpected. I loved that it was tucked away and also had a nice outdoor area. I will definitely be back ASAP.

Just had the most interesting exchange here. I asked, how do I leave a tip? Staff replied, we don't accept gratuities here because we all make a living wage ... that's our mission here. Please just leave us a review. Brilliant! Love it. Will order a take out on my way out.

I finally made it y'all!! I made it to smallSUGAR and I really enjoyed the laid back vibe and the friendly atmosphere. I wish I would have gotten the young girl name who was working the front on that day. She was so nice and pleasant. She really made the experience a really positive one. The coffee was great. I enjoyed the rich flavor and hints of sweetness. I also love the fair wages fair prices model. This is a great spot to work on the honor hang with friends or meet with colleagues. I'll be back to try lunch soon.

smallSUGAR is such a gem! Having visited twice now, I would say it's one of my Columbia favorites. The first time, we visited for breakfast and found the place mostly empty on a Friday (late) morning. The interior had a cozy ambiance with exposed brick walls, covered in paintings for sale. We ordered at the counter and I chose a Hibiscus Iced Tea and Mushroom Tartine with Smashed Avocado. Service was friendly and pretty quick. My Mushroom Tartine was very tasty, and the portion size was perfect. The Smashed Avocado ended up just coming in a little bowl on the side, but it went well with the small mixed green salad. The Hibiscus Iced Tea was very refreshing and not too sweet. My friend got the smallSUGAR Breakfast, which she absolutely loved. The second time, I visited for lunch and had an equally great experience. I ordered an Iced Bourbon Caramel latte, which was decent - not quite strong enough for me. And for food, I chose the Turkey Melt with Za'atar Carrots as a side. The Turkey Melt was delicious and very filling, and I loved all the melty cheese. The flavor of the Za'atar Carrots was awesome, and although they slightly overdid it with the flaky salt, I would get these again. I also got a Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookie, which was fantastic. Overall, an awesome cafe with a good mix of healthy and decadent options!

I love smallSUGAR! The historic brick building in the Vista is gorgeous and the decor is all clean lines and surfaces, dahling. Plenty of outdoor seating. The greens and grains salad is chock full of perfect local lettuces and kale, lightly dressed, and pretty to look at. The coffee is very good. I had a cortado. The pastries are ginormous but I decided to wait for cheat day. They add a service charge to your bill which takes the awkwardness out and ensures the staff have a living wage. Having worked in the service industry for years, I approve! Everyone seems friendly and happy to work here.

Was looking for a little cafe that we could hang out at. Parking a little tricky but was able to find a meter a couple blocks away. Inside was cute but a little small with ~10 tables. We were able to hang out and it was lovely. I got a little hungry and ordered the turkey melt. Prices are a little elevated because they say the extra fee goes to their workers. I felt like the workers were all treated very well and they were all hard workers. The sandwich was good! Loved all the flavors. I also loved the side carrots. Overall a very nice time! Glad we tried it!

smallSUGAR is a must try spot in Columbia!! I came here for a coffee and a pastry and I was so impressed. Everything looked and tasted so fresh and high quality. The place itself was also massive with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Service was great and the staff were very kind. I would absolutely recommend everyone try this hidden gem if you are in the area! I can't wait to come back soon.

The place is very well air conditioned, and the space is very intentional. Visiting from out of state the waitress seemed a bit shy/new but curious about Wisconsin she warmed up a little bit. It's really cool that you can see the chefs in their element behind a glass wall while you wait. The silverware, or should I say Goldwear was beautiful. I started out with the All American Spritz- it was good but nothing extraordinary. However when I tried the pistachio martini, I was in disbelief! I was skeptical to order it as I've never even heard of one before and was unsure how pistachio would translate into a martini. It was creamy and somehow savory and sweet at the same time, the alcohol taste was nonexistent. And the rim was coated in pistachio crumbs. Both the drinks presentation was beautiful. I personally ordered the bbq chicken sandwhich, with mac and cheese instead of fries for the side. The sandwich was smoky, I could not stop eating it! If anyone was wondering what so special about the mac and cheese, it's the name of the noodles. And yes, the waitress will sound it out with you lol! The Mac and cheese wasn't creamy, and I found it a bit bland unfortunately. There was no order the same in the group I came with. The truffle fries were on the thinner crispier side, neat that there were different color of potatoes used. The duck wings came out like their very own presentation. I tried the alligator bites, that were served with 2 sauces, I thought there were kind of chewy , and weird enough I guess I have a preference with how my alligator is served since having tried some at the Wisco State fair. I love that the menu feels curated, you know what you're there for and it's not overwhelming to pick from the options of something new. The bathroom was very cute too! And the bar area was lit up, a cool atmosphere.

That created a slightly rushed feeling right from the start of the experience. When the food arrived, it was not served hot. The fries were seasoned but came out cold, so we had to send them back. The service also felt a bit disengaged, as though the server was ready to wrap things up, even though there was still about 30 to 45 minutes before closing time. That said, once the food was remade and served hot, it was really good. My salad, however, was not the same experience, as the lettuce had brown spots throughout, which took away from the overall quality. You can tell the kitchen has potential when the food is prepared properly, but consistency is the issue. The ambience is very cool and visually appealing. It is a bit dark for my personal preference in the evening, but I can imagine it being bright and beautiful during the daytime. The cocktail I ordered was just okay and didn't really stand out. Overall, there is definitely potential here, but improvements in consistency, service attentiveness, and food quality control would really elevate the experience.

We ended up stopping at The Grand around 9/9:30pm on a Saturday. Upon entering the hostess informed us they were currently only serving the late night menu. We said no problem and elected to grab seats at the bar. There were several empty tables and a few empty seats @ the bar. However, the only two seats together at the bar needed to be cleared from the last patrons that were seated. We stood there for over 20 mins while Jacob continued to walk by never acknowledging us or the fact that we couldn't sit. When he finally cleared the dishes he just walked away, never cleaning the area. When he returned he still never greeted us or apologized for the wait, the mess... nothing. Jacob: What are you having? Me: Well hello... Jacob: Yea... what do you want? Me: Wow... ok. For starters can you please whip off the bar so we can properly have a seat. There is still food residue here from the last customers. ** we get a visible huff** He wipes down the bar and we proceed to order drinks, while he never really speak any more it's all via motions and body language. Amongst ourselves we check in with one another to confirm that we both were feeling very unwelcome. Instantly we decide that we will not be ordering anything additional and will be leaving after this one drink. Which is just as well because Jacob never returns. Someone , whom I can only assume was of a mangement status, asked if Jacob was helpful and we promptly and simultaneously said no and that we would like or bill. She shook her head in utter disbelief and disgust but then she also disappeared. Just so happened that Diamond, whom was on the other side of the bar happen to walk pass. She stopped and asked if we were ok after witnessing our frustration. We explained that we wanted the check and why we were leaving. She was super apologetic and closed out our tab. Her energy literal turned the experience around and if she would have came to our rescue sooner we would have considered staying. Thank you Diamond. Just A Note: Unfortunately, bad first impression because The Grand seems like it may offer a good time with the bowling lanes in the back.
