I was in for recall work. Staff were friendly and I was processed right when I drove in. It was nice to get a ride to work (not that far, but still). No rides BACK to the shop, but I had a ride anyway. The service was performed and the car was ready when I was done with work. The service included a multi-point inspection, which may feel like they're digging up work - but in my case it confirmed all was well. The pointed out a few small light bulbs that were out, which I was able to fix on my own (for a fraction of the cost). I rarely get service at dealerships - they are way more expensive than regular mechanic shops (which are more expensive than doing it myself!). In a pinch, they would do - but dealerships, for me, are primarily recall or warranty work. read more

Went a second time and they kept trying to get me to buy and replace new tires right on the spot when i was only there for an oil change. they even brought out the "tire expert" and he tried to convince me and said i wouldnt find a better, but i found a better deal for $500 cheaper read more

Horrible customer service which bothered me because it had been great for the 5+ new vehicles (and one or two used) that we purchased from Smart over a 23 year period. I finally asked what happened and a service person said the business had changed hands around the time this downhill slide began. Explains it. Express lube? Gone! Easy appointments? Gone. Wanted to buy 4 tires in the fall: oh you'll need an appointment for that and we can't even tell you when. Costco could (and did) get me in later that same day. Lifetime rotations free and it is much closer to my house. Also free puncture repair. Costco wins. Me as a future Smart Motors customer? Also gone. I love Toyotas but I can see Fords in my future. What a frustrating and disappointing experience I have had the past month with Smart. We've been loyal customers for more than a decade - my husband and I took two different cars we've owned here - and I'll never be back. After taking our car in 2 weeks ago for a broken patch that was fixed, along with other issues they found (totaling ~$600). The inspection they did turned up nothing else wrong. After a week or so, our anti-lock brake system light came on, so we brought it back to be checked. They then told us we needed all our tires replaced ($1600) and when I asked why that didn't show up a week ago, they said their measurement tool must have been mis-calibrated. So we OKed the work assuming it was necessary and let them run a diagnostic. They then quoted us another ~$3500 in repairs later that day, none of which had been mentioned at the last visit. When we said we didn't want to do any of the work because it made more sense to trade it in with repair costs so high, they still did the tires, which we then had to wait to be changed out again and we're still charged ~$600 - for nothing! Absolutely avoid this place at all costs. I dropped my car off for something as basic as an oil and filter change, and less than two miles after picking it up, my tire pressure suddenly dropped to 9-10 psi. That's not a coincidence -- either gross negligence or someone tampered with my car. To make things worse, my brakes -- which their "inspection report" claimed were in excellent condition -- started making bizarre noises right after the service. When I called back, they couldn't get me in for five days to look at a problem they likely caused. And get this -- they said if it turns out not to be their fault, they'll hit me with an outrageous bill just to diagnose and fix the issue. Unbelievable. This shop is either incompetent or shady -- or both. Keep your car far away unless you enjoy surprise issues, poor accountability, and being treated like a wallet instead of a customer. read more

I had an appointment for a basic tire rotation. When I showed up on time, I was told it would be a one hour wait. I didn't have an hour, that's why I made an appointment. Now I have to come back in two weeks and hope they didn't overbook again so I don't waste another afternoon. What's the purpose of having an appointment? Very mixed to negative feelings on the service I got at Smart Motors. I purchased my car from them about five years ago and when my stereo and touchscreen completely stopped functioning, I decided to go to them versus my regular mechanic (Zapata - the best) knowing that Smart knows Toyota cars. I assumed they could fix the issue so I was fine paying a $156 fee for "diagnosis". Unfortunately, they could not fix the issue and said it would cost me $1,300 to do it there. I declined and assume I can find somewhere cheaper, and realize I should have done that in the first place. I don't like being treated like a clown sent away on Tuesday told I had an appointment for Friday at 7am and then told express takes cars first come first serve. On a prior visit I was there at 630 am waiting for the 7am opening and I was kicked to the curb because they said the people that arrived behind he had appointments! We had an appointment set up to bring our Toyota in for an oil change and tire rotation. We get 5 free oil changes since we purchased our vehicle there. The first 2 times service was great. Last night we dropped off our vehicle for today's appt and never heard from them that it was ready. We stopped in, mind you this was across town, and at first they said they didn't have a record of an appt when we had clearly received a reminder yesterday. Then they said we had one for 10 PM. Um, duh... we dropped the keys off last night for the appt! They had no answer to why they didn't get our car in when it was on the books for the appt. Oh, and our free oil change expired, too. Learned the family had sold the business to a larger dealer group back in January 2024, which explains the 180 degree turn on customer service -- from one that was customer-forward and incredibly kind to one that is indifferent (at best). The employees don't seem engaged or motivated, there is no sense of customer engagement, and the service charged for was not actually performed. Shockingly bad experience. read more

Now I find out they overtightened my oil filter so much that a different oil change shop can't even remove it. Plus, they forgot to put in 1 of the skid plate bolts. I had a scheduled service appointment for an oil change and tire rotation on 3/27/24. I arrived at 7:30 am for my 7:45 appointment. Every spot at the Express Lube had a car waiting, even though only 2 of the "Appointment Only" bays were open, including Bay 7 where I was scheduled. I was checked in at 7:42 am. At 8:30 am I looked outside and my car was still parked outside. I was unable to wait any longer as I had another commitment at 9 am and had to leave. I talked with the Manager, who apologized and told me they were short staffed. I asked why customers without appointments were getting service and I wasn't. He told me that some people arrived to wait in line at 6am which is why they were getting service. I said that customers who made appointments should be prioritized over those without appointments and was told that my car was up for service next, but I was not able to get service because I had to leave. I was very upset and distressed and feel strongly that Appointments should be honored over those without appointments. It is irrelevant that they "got in line" without an appointment and got their vehicle serviced ahead of me. If the Shop was short staffed in the Appointment Only Bays, people with appointments should have been serviced in the other bays and those without appointments should have to wait longer or leave. I am so incredibly disappointed in this (new?) service arrangement and wonder if the problems are related to the sale of Smart Motors (in Jan 2024) to Baxter Auto Group out of Nebraska?? (By the way, I purchased my vehicle new, in Feb 2011 at Smart Motors and have always had it serviced there. I have never had such a terrible experience and will not go back!) read more

I had never been here before for service. I inherited my wife's Lexus RX 350 and I've been caring for it for the last year. Six months ago I had a problem with my oil filter which somehow became blocked. I had to have it towed and serviced somewhere else. Today I went for a oil change. My service man was named Tyler. After he removed the oil filter cap, he brought to my attention that there was something wrong with it. That was why I had the blocked oil filter previously. Fortunately he had a replacement cap and within a few minutes it was installed and I was on my way. The entire experience at Smart Motors service was exceptionally good. They have a spotless garage where they work. I think there were six service bays in the express section that we're going throughout my stay. The waiting area was well appointed. There were areas where you can sit and work with your computer, watch TV, enjoy fruit, Donuts, beverage. The checkout process was smooth and the reception staff was very helpful. As part of the service, there was a self-service car wash. My experience today deserves the five stars and I'm very appreciative to Tyler for explaining the defect in my oil filter cap. Just took advantage of a September service promotion, "Toyota Complete," one price for synthetic oil change, tire rotation, and multi-point inspection overall. Service writer, Ed, was both knowledgeable and friendly. Time required was only about 1 hour, and that included a complimentary exterior car wash! The price was great, I'm thinking I saved about $25. In a business where it's *sometimes* hard to feel trust, I can honestly say that I have complete trust in all the departments I've used at Smart Motors. I have to qualify: I did *not* receive service here. But that's actually the good part -- I came in with a 2000 Toyota Corolla that had been vandalized, the stereo stolen and the dashboard ripped out. The repairmen told me honestly that the wiring I needed would cost $700 for them to order, the dash would cost $75 and the labor would be at least $400. Not a great deal. So they sent me to a salvage yard where I found a part ($68) and then to another business, AMS, that installed a refurbished radio and the dash in less than an hour ($50). The guys at Smart Motors were super helpful, even calling ahead to make sure the AMS folks knew who I was (!!) and that they knew how to help me. Even though they haven't received a dime of my money yet, I had such a fantastic experience with Smart Motors that the next time I need service, I know where I'm going. read more

Just had recall work done on my daughters 2003 Toyota Corolla. Nothing else authorized. Instead of calling me they called my 17 year old asking if they could do additional work. Since she is a minor this is not legal. When I called inquiring about the work and why they did not call me I was transferred to numerous people with no luck.I finally got Nathan who did not like my questions telling me he was with a customer and hung up on me. What? I'm not a customer? I got a call from service manager who was equally as arrogant and he told me all parts would be removed and there would be no charge because what Nathan did was not correct. I am happy for that but my daughter still ended up waiting an additional 2 hours for her car when it was done and sitting in the parking lot, nobody having told her it was done. I just had my Prius serviced there because I also had a recall. Oil change, check fluids and tire rotation was $133. They did not rotate the tires. I recently drove through some mud on the left side of the car and those tires were still on the left side of the car. I did call to complain, and was told it would be "passed on to a manager". Also, I have tires that are two years old. (I bought them at Tires Plus) I drive about 20 miles round trip to work and make the occasional road trip. They told me I "could get through the summer on these tires", but would need new ones in the fall. No way have I driven 50,000 mi. on these tires. I'm going to stick to Tires Plus for my service and tire rotation (that's free because I bought them there) going forward. read more

I bought my 2010 highlander here and have had it serviced at Smart for the three years I have had it. I have never had any problems and have always been treated like their best customer. Their waiting area is always clean and the complementary food and beverages are first rate. I recently had a break job done and it was completed in the time they said and I was given a loaner car at no cost because I bought the car here. They are very organized and its a pleasure doing business with them. I find it hard to believe some of the negative reviews that others have given Smart Motors. Arrived at 11:30 on a Friday, asked for an oil change only, was told that it would be about an hour. After the hour was up a guy comes out and tries to sell me on about $400.00 worth of service. No thanks, just the oil change. Guy goes away and about 20 minutes later comes back again, tells me they can't change my oil because they can't unscrew something to get the oil out, advises me to take my car to my previous oil-changing place but that they wouldn't charge me for the oil change (thanks, since there was none), just for the tire rotation. I say fine. Guy is gone for another 15 minutes, comes back to "talk" to me yet again about more things they supposedly found wrong, like license plate lights and some other nonsense. I tell him I'm ready to get out (I did have a screaming baby at that point), I want to pay for the rotation and nothing else. I point out to him that I'd been there for over 1.5 hours and didn't get what I came for, a simple oil change. He becomes defensive. The lady at the front desk yells out a name that sort of sounds like mine. When I repeat my name (to verify it's really me), she says, clearly annoyed, "Yeah, sure." Geesh, working in Madison must be the pits for her with all those foreign sounding names and all. Just an awful place. Much better experience and kinder employees at their East side Lancaster location. Had the employees here been more courteous, I may have considered returning despite the wait. Some advice for whoever runs this place: If after a long wait you can't give your customers what they came for, you acknowledge the inconvenience and offer some kind of apology; also, we're not all Jennifers and Lisas anymore; if your employees can't deal with diversity, get ones who can, offer some kind of training, evolve. read more

Purchased a used certified Toyota out of state. This vehicle comes with a "comprehensive" warranty that is transferable nation wide. Noticed that one bolt did not secure my new license plate. Called Smart Motors to see about getting this fixed. Was told it was not covered because the warranty does not cover "nut and bolts". I asked if Smart Motors was looking to loose my business over a bolt and they basically said yes. This business is not interested in doing the right thing. I would be very nervous bringing a car here for repairs or expecting them to stand by their warranties. East Madison Toyota did make the repair so if you need a dealer go there. read more

I'll try to keep this short: They were working on my car and it was vandalized on their property. Total damage was over $2k. Interestingly, when the car was broken into it was parked in the back corner of their lot in a dimly-lit area. Police noted it was a "clean break", meaning no shattered windows, drilled keyholes, or scrape marks from a coat hanger were used. They also found the doors locked, which is rare that people re-lock the doors after they break in. Inside job? Sounds like it to me... Smart Motors told me they were not liable because I signed a form saying they weren't to be held responsible for any damage. I worked my way up to Brian Smart (the owner) and he said they would give me half the cost of repairs. I told him that wasn't good enough as they had the car and assumed responsibility of it when they took the keys. I had a lawyer draft a letter informing them they are responsible for the damage and if they didn't bring the car back up to its physical state when I dropped it off we would pursue legal action. Brian finally agreed to the repairs but said he was doing it to get this situation off his hands. They never accepted responsibility for what happened, nor did he apologize. read more

Used car sales was horrible!!! The last 3 cars I've bought were new Toyotas from Smart. Recently I spotted a used Toyota online at Smart that was very much what I've been looking for. When I stopped in to check it out, the window sticker price on the car was about $3,000 more than the online price. A salesman tried to tell me that I must have mistaken it with a different color car he'd sold the day before! He never offered to unlock the car I was looking at, let alone take it for a test drive. He suggested vehicles other than the model & option I told him I wanted. He took my contact info but I've yet to hear back from him. I shared my experience in an email to the president of Smart Motors over 3 weeks ago & have yet to receive even an acknowledgment of the email. I located the same model of car with the option I wanted at a different dealership & purchased it at an excellent price with no sales games & excellent service. I don't plan to ever purchase a new or used car from Smart Motors again. I am also sharing my experience with others to warn them. read more

Unethical, rude, ripoff and didn't even put the plastic moulding or seats back after they opened it up. Woman in front literally said my car was a piece of crap. Not to mention I was going to pay them to fix my hood and whatever else was wrong. I was happy to do that. Now pieces are missing. Great that I can open my hood but obnoxious otherwise. Came into Smart Motors during a long road trip during which the oil light started coming on for the first time ever. Had this happened in the state where I'm from, they would have definitely taken the car in and fleeced me for as much as possible. Instead, the service associate (can't remember his name!) looked over the car and told us that there was nothing wrong with it that couldn't be taken care of by simply feeding it oil, and that unnecessary examination and repairs could cost us thousands. I took my car to smart motors for an oil change earlier in June. My grandpa who sold me the car always took it there to be serviced so I thought I'd do the same. When inspecting my vehicle they found a leak in my power steering pump and quoted me about $700 to fix it. I didn't have time that day to make any further repairs and my father is a mechanic so I usually have him fix my car other than changing the oil because it's just so messy and annoying to do on his own. My father and his coworkers start looking at my car to make the repair and find that there is no leak and the smart motors people quoted me for a job I didn't even need done. When waiting for my car I did notice almost every other person in the room also got quoted for at least one thing on their vehicle that needed further repairs. Not sure if they were trying to scam me cuz I'm a young woman or if that's just how they do things..... read more

RUN!!!!!!! That is the best advice I can give anyone who even remotely wants to be treated with dignity and respect....especially if you are not Anglo-Saxon looking! Yeah I said it!!! Husband & I were told we were APPROVED for a loan, when we got there 3 weeks later as promised (we needed more down) we were told the man I had been speaking to was no longer working there and was in fact now selling pots and pans. The man I spoke to said not to worry all files were there he would get the Manager and we could complete our purchase. Fine. It took almost 10 minutes to see anyone (Craig) and then it took 10 more for him to locate our file...and he was allegedly the manger! He did find "the file" he took us into some cubby hole of a room WAY in back to "discuss the file" and then went on to tell me I could not have emailed the documents to the man I was speaking to as he did not have an email account, when I brought up the email address I sent the docs to - he then admitted it was the proper account to reach the man and that MAYBE I was correct ...SERIOUSLY? Then he tells me that we were NOT approved and he did not have all the material I said I emailed when it was IN HIS HANDS and when I asked to see what he had he THREW a paper across the table rather rudely and said that is all we have - well what are the other 8-10 sheets there? He refused to let me see. With that my husband became upset and said forget lets go get the other truck we KNOW we can get and left the room. Craig then said "Yeah go get that other truck it would be better for everyone" I was so dumbfounded!! I was like are you serious??? Then left the room. On the way home we called a local dealer looking for what we wnated and they did have it. We stopped by, completed paperwork and got the approval this morning. We take possession over the weekend when we are both able to be there! No one from Smart Motors will call me back or answer my email complaint. What a way to do business!!! STAY AWAY FROM SMART MOTORS!!! THEY ARE SCAMMERS AND BIGOTS! THIS IS 2010 NOT 1910!!! I bring my cars here for tire rotations and oil changes. They are good at that. But they always try to sell you a $40 air cabin filter that you can get on Amazon for $7. Most people fall for this scam. They quoted me $300 for a front brake job which was competitive. Overall they are not bad, not too pushy. read more

Avoid Smart Motors if you possibly can! As many others before, my experience with the their service department was nothing but frustrating, and I have taken my business elsewhere. They are expensive to begin with, and then they do not stand behind their work. Six month ago, a tear in the driver's seatbelt required replacing it. That repair was aggravating enough. The repair was supposed to be done the same day we brought the car in, but took almost a week because they couldn't get the parts in in time, and kept making empty promises. Now, six months later, the new seatbelt has a tear in the same spot where the old one ripped, and is half way ripped through. We brought the car back to them, expecting an apology, and a free replacement. Far from it. They couldn't figure out how the tear had occurred. That was bad enough in my mind. On top of that, their position was that since they couldn't figure out how the tear had occurred it obviously couldn't be their fault, and hence we needed to pay for it. So much for taking responsibility for their work. Well, we'll have the seat belt repaired, but not at Smart Motors. This was the last time I've done any business with them. We've been a Smart Motors customer for seven years, but my trust with them is gone, both in terms of being competent enough to actually fix this, and in terms of the way they are doing business. I felt ripped off. With the volume of their sales, their service department apparently has too many customers to care about both the quality of their work, and the satisfaction of their customers. read more

Smart's customer service just called my husband and offered a refund for the inspection I discuss below, so I have changed my ratng from a 1 to a 3. But I am leaving my review below as it was because it will remind women of something that they need to watch out for. I had emailed Smart last night with my complaint, and my husband went in and talked to the service department this morning, with no results so I don't know what triggered the call now but I am happy that it did--perhaps someone finally read the email that I sent last night. Here is my original review. This applies to service--I had the oil on my 2010 camry changed last night. When I dropped the car off, I told the service person that I wanted an oil change and nothing else and that my husband had just changed the air filter, the cabin filter and rotated the tires. I then went to the waiting room and they came in with an unitemized estimate. The unitemized estimate included an all points inspection. There was nothing on the unitemized estimate page to indicate that the inspection was an extra service, so I assumed that the inspection was something that they did with every oil change--Ballweg Motors and Jiffy Lube include a free inspection with their oil changes and I assumed that Smart did too. I told them to go ahead after I had once again said that the cabin filter and air filter had been already been changed and the tires had already been rotated. My car has only 30,000 miles on it and there is no need to inspect it for the things that are included in their all points inspection (expecially when they knew that I would not need an air filter change, cabin filter change or the tires roated) so they were, in my opinion, selling me an unnecessary service and not clearly presenting it as an extra charge service. The inspection cost $38.00. When I got home and showed the receipt to my husband, he told me I had been ripped off, and I agree because I had made it clear to the intake person that I ONLY wanted an oil change. I am a woman who knows nothing about cars and this is our first car that uses synthetic oil, so I did not know what a synthetic oil change should have cost. I am sure that there are other women out there too and I am posting this as a warning to them. In my opinion, the all point inspection is a rip off for a low mileage car and I think it is deceptive for Smart to not either point it out as an extra for charge service or to not show an itemized charge for it on the estimate. (I think that cabin filter, air filter and tire rotation are on the recommended service schedule so if you are following the recommended service schedule there is no need to even inspect for these items). If I had seen a $38 charge for the inspection on the estimate, I would have figured it out right away. I complained to Smart about this but they claim that their procedures are not deceptive and that they do not sell services that are unnecessary. I disagree!!!!!!!!!!! read more

i regret purchasing a vehicle from this dealership, i have purchased a 07' subaru legacy and within 3 weeks. i came across a brake failure, i then went to the shop at smart motors, had the technicians check it out. they say everything is all fine. when the previous day, the brakes barely work and had almost caused a collision! i tried to get them to produce a document stating that their liable for any brake failures, signed and date. but yet they refused! so there was no point in them saying everything is fine! skip a long to a reputable dealer, even though they have plaques/ awards on the walls does not mean anything! they will sell you a lemon with out you knowing! i called up a private shop and asked for a quote, all 4 brake replacements came up to $500! I took my 2006 Toyota Prius in for a noisey passenger side wheel bearing and abs light that was on. The ABS light was an easy fix. I replaced the driver side wheel bearing my self and forgot to position the hole in the axle dust cover so the ABS speed sensor can read the axle. It was an easy do over. I was charged $125 for this. In addition I was charged $125 for an initial diagnostic fee after I told the assistant service writer what the issue was. The passenger wheel bearing cost me $675 for the part and labor. I initially took my car in to save myself but it wound up costing me over $900. The car was fixed right however this cost was extremely excessive. I would recommend pricing other shops before brining your car here. read more
