Our turf has started sinking in many places, has ruined our fence, and we can't get the company to fix it. I have seen many comments about how he talks poorly to people and I couldn't agree more. We contacted him to fix our turf that was within our warranty. He just simply won't return any calls or messages. He has sent mean text messages to my wife and I, completely unprofessional, and down right rude. If you try to reach him multiple times he will tell you that you're harassing him. When literally all we have done is try to see when he can come fix our turf and he is trying to get out fixing it for us. He then followed up by texting me 12 times and saying horrible things to me that were actually harassment. We paid for extended warranty for two years and we're just trying to have somebody come out here to look at what was happening. If it was covered under warranty or not, we were happy to pay, but he would not even come out here. We had Goat Turf come and fix it and had to repay for the whole entire thing. I am so happy with that company and they let us know that it was the worst job they've ever seen done. They said that smarter scapes had installed the Turf backwards in some areas, used the wrong rocks, had it secured it in the ground properly, hadn't done the borders properly, and about five other things were wrong. I used these guys for a few major projects in the past. They were pretty good, now they are a disaster. I realize it was because they had some good installers, not because of knowledgeable and concerned ownership and management. Today there are all new installers, and I would rate them as the worst in Middle Tennessee. It is unfortunate I had to give them a "1" rather than a deserved "-10". We were told that Smart Scapes was putting their "best crew" on our job... God help the customers that got their worst crew. I could write pages of what is wrong with the decking they installed around our pool, but the highlights are: * Badly uneven pavers * Joints done by "eyeball", not using spacers. Joints were spaced from zero to 3/8" wide * Crappy cuts with large spacing to be filled in with polymeric sand * Steps designed dangerously (not even close to code) with widely varied rise and run that caused tripping most time they were used * Minimal polymeric sand (about 1/8" to ¼" thick), so when it rained, the finished grout washed away, and crappy dirt showed through * Edges along the landscaping were not finished so there was no grout to the edge of the pavers and the rough-cut edges showed * David Schmutz and the crew were handed the pattern required by the manufacturer and chosen by us for proper installation... the idiots put them wherever they wanted. The heck with what the customer pays for... * They cut the pavers using a dry saw... most real professionals use a wet saw to prevent dust and a cleaner cut. The dust was all over my property, trees, house, outdoor furniture, etc. I pressure washed it off. * The pool ladder needs to be removable for the cover in winter... they used construction adhesive to permanently secure it. I used my 2-ton bottle jack to safely remove it and it is now usable again. * Oil from their leaking machines spilled all over my driveway, they said they would come back to clean up... never did * Terrible communication. No one on the job spoke English, and when I asked the foreman, David Schmutz, to check in with my wife each day when I was gone on business, he said he would. Never did once... no missed calls, no texts, nothing There are many complaints in other reviews of this guy talking down to women and being disrespectful. I believe it. When confronting David Schmutz with the problems, instead of acting as a concerned businessman who took pride in his product, he acted as a spoiled 5-year-old blaming everyone else for his mess. He essentially said his installers are unable to provide quality work. I wish I knew that prior. I did not have them come back to fix the problems because if they had ANY idea how to install pavers there would be little to fix... and the entire job basically needs to be redone... Smart Scapes personnel are no longer allowed on my property. As a result, I am re-doing the entire job myself... about 2,000 sq ft. I am 73 and riddled with arthritis but I am taking my time, and the job is looking like a professional did it (I never installed limestone pavers before)... it no longer looks like a Junior Achievement project gone bad. Bottom line, if any hardscape supplier recommends Smart Scapes... immediately find another supplier. read more

Do not recommend. Supervising and monitoring his young workers is a big job. Kevin is rarely on site, often does not answer calls or respond to texts. workers show up late and unprepared for the days work. Often workers do not understand the job to be done so projects take forever being revised. Monitor your site closely, Kevin is comfortable building outside code to a dangerous degree. Craftsmanship is very uneven!!! When confronted with issues Kevin becomes very threatening, scary. Overall Beware! The job will get finished, maybe even to code. But you will be exhausted with the lack of communication. Dazzled with the absence of professionalism. Dismayed with the unexpected extra costs. read more

In my opinion, if you are looking for a professional company that offers quality workmanship and excellent customer service, do not hire this company. We had the worst customer experience having them to add a 4 ft. paver block border around our existing patio. On the phone call with the rep, she told me a machine would be laying the bricks and it could have it done in a day. We agreed to hire them and put deposit of 1/2 down. The rep said they would come out on the following Monday and start. They ended up showing up the next day on Thursday afternoon, no knock on the door, no email/phone call from the rep, just walked in the back yard and started spray painting the lines and digging up the sod. Not a big deal that they started earlier than expected, but a heads up would have been nice. The next day they came back and started laying the pavers without the machine. I didn't think much of it and they proceeded to lay the pavers. When they were finished they were cleaning up and took the extra sod and cut bricks, threw them in a wheel barrow and proceeded to dump the extra sod and bricks in back of my yard behind the fence (I didn't realize this until the next day). The finished product had uneven lines, different size cuts so the herringbone pattern didn't really look professionally done. I talked with the rep to voice my displeasure; she said she saw what I was talking about and asked what would be fair to fix this. I offered to give us a $500 credit and clean up the debris they threw on the side of my yard. She passed this on to her boss, David S., and he responded by saying it was excessive to ask for that. I sent him pictures and an explanation of my discontent. I also offered for him to come out and take a look at the project. His response was saying he would send a crew to "remove the pavers" because all I was doing was looking for something for free. He also said he was "done emailing" and a crew would be there "tomorrow" to remove the pavers. So instead of trying to address the issues, he shut down communication and threatened to "take his ball and go home." I did respond that I didn't want anything for free, but I did expect professionalism and for them to acknowledge that the work was not up to par and to remove the debris from the back of my yard. They may want to change their "mission statement" that states "Our Mission To Give Our Clients Value Through Quality Products, Engineering And Workmanship..." -this was not the case in this situation and there was no response to fix it. We did end up paying the full quoted price, after we made sure they cleaned up the debris they dumped at the edge of our property, but they did not address any of the other issues of the finished product. read more

David doesn't have a professional bone in his body. Or maybe he just thought he could bully me because I'm a female? Not sure but there is no excuse for leaving a customer shaking and in tears after a phone call. I've never been spoken to that way and in hindsight I can see that it was aggressive gaslighting at it's finest. Let me add that it was the first time I had ever interacted with him, I thought he was calling to talk about resolutions to something I perceived as a mistake (he claimed otherwise), and it was after the project had started so I couldn't just walk away. Another issue that I had in common with another reviewer was their concept of warranty work. They didn't finish the last few punchlist items for the project which in my mind means the project isn't finished (...crazy logic, I know...) but they claimed that they were 'warranty items/tasks' and couldn't be performed until after I paid my last bill. Doesn't warranty mean it was done correctly the first time and it will be fixed if something goes wrong? What would incentivize them to come finish their work if I had already made the last payment? Maybe you could say that you have to trust people to be true to their word but I'll refer you to the above paragraph. It's now been 3 months and no one has been back to address the unfinished tasks. It never feels good to write a bad review but my experience was so bad that I had to warn people. read more

In these tough high inflation times, we need more landscaping companies that are honest and just do a darn good job. Initially when looking for a company to put pavers and synthetic turf in my backyard, i found the selection/available firms to be either on the expensive side, or non responsive. Given the very high value of the project, I knew I wanted to find a company that would pay attention to my needs, not be pushy and be very helpful in every step of the process. That's when I landed with Kelly (contact info below). Not only was she very responsive, but was patient in dealing with my lack of knowledge on this space. She made sure she showed me all available choices and did not try to sell up. Work began only 1 week later. The workers were very professional and hard working. The overall project lasted only 2 weeks (net of rainy days). I highly recommend Smart Scapes for all your landscaping needs. These people were months late starting the job, the workers required babysitting as they kept making mistakes (not straight lines, not following the design, patio much smaller than promised). Now every time it rains our garage floods, Rhianne has been unresponsive to requests for guidance on how to correct (she said they were "accounting for water" in the design). Now some of our large plantings are dying after just a few months. I asked that they replace the 2 dead plants and here is here text back to me: "We dont warranty plant material without irrigation. Thats industry standard. We dont warranty jobs that negotiated not paying their final bill." I paid $20,000 on a $20,300 bill. The discount, which we agreed upon, was because the patio turned out to be 10x12 instead of the 12x14 she promised. The first call was answered by a machine and I left a message that I was interested in a pondless waterfall and left my number to call back. I never heard from them. I called back and left another message. No call back. I know, I know...I should have stopped right there. I called again a day or two later and a man answered. I told him what I was interested in and he said he would call back in three (3) weeks. Three weeks was yesterday and you guessed it, no call back. DO NOT BOTHER DOING BUSINESS with someone who can't even give you the courtesy of a call back or simply just say they can't do any jobs because they're too busy. We have been very pleased with David, Rhianne and their team. We first used them before we actually moved here. They were great. Met me on the day we closed on our house- were prompt and on time. I told them what I wanted to do and they put together some options- visual plans and estimates. I was able to do/plan everything remotely so that I could get approval from our HOA to begin work as soon as we moved in. They did a fantastic job. We get so many compliments on our landscaping. We had a small plant and tree die within the warranty and they replaced with no issues. We also had a few trees that looked like they were struggling right at the end of our warranty. Their expert opinion was they would be fine, but would offer an extra year of warranty, just in case. Well, they were correct.
