I have been going to Smart Spa/ Ms. Elaine for a yr now. I learned of her services (through Groupon) at a time when I was making a conscious decision to intentionally support small businesses owned by Black women and when I realized she was Jamaican I felt even more implored. The space is shared with a salon but that isn't problematic as she has her own private area and once the door closes, there is no noise from the salon. You might hear footsteps from the apt above but that wasn't an issue for me since I've never gone for massages, only facials and waxing. Here's what works really well: the prices area great. Even if you went in on a Groupon, which I did...I had purchased a package of 3 Brazilians, even after that expires she will honor the same rate moving forward . She's great with Brazilian waxes and will make sure she get every single hair( painful as the process might be). She's a little heavy handed but thorough. She's also great with facials. I've done several different types and I was mostly always pleased with the outcome. The space is clean and proper sanitary conditions are maintained. Here's a couple things that I am suggesting: Ms. Elaine could benefit from having a proper voicemail set up for the business. You call her cellphone and sometimes the way she answers/ go about the appointments come off rather harsh. How customers are received is a huge part of a business and you can't afford to falter in that area. Next, not everyone speaks your dialect and while it's good to have because it makes you culturally relevant to some customers (myself included) I could see how others could be turned off. This is not judgement, it's critical feedback with good intentions to see your business do well and support your talent. P.S. customers are not allowed to park in the lot but there's plenty of parking of paid parking on the main and free parking on the side streets. In closing, I don't know a lot of black waxers /aestheticians who own and operate their own business so I support them when their business and craft is quality. Ms. Elaine has a good heart and she deserves to win so I will continue to support her as I encourage her to develop elements of her business. read more

The owner of this business is extremely unprofessional. She or he told me I was playing games with them because I was unavailable to go to an appointment time slot. I will never tolerate a rude staffed no matter how much of a discount I would have been getting on Groupon there are plenty other deals and much cleaner places to go then this place. read more

I called same day for a facial and was given a 7pm appointment. When I arrived I rang the bell but as I waited for an answer I noticed a sign which stated there's no parking in the parking lot. As someone rang me in I let them know I had to move my car. Two-three mins later I arrived back to the door which was propped open, I took a seat in the waiting area excited for my treatment. I waited and waited, about 10 mins later I made eye contact with the woman who originally opened the door but she quickly looked away and disappeared never acknowledging my presence etc. Minutes later I could hear employees talking to each other but no one ever came to the reception area. I purchased a Groupon for a facial here, although there were some reviews that gave me the impression this establishment lacked professionalism. I tried to be open minded. When I called to make an appointment the owner answered the phone regularly, "hello". Now I wasn't sure if I called the wrong number because that is not how you answer the phone as a business! She asked me to text her a screenshot of my voucher (don't know why but I did) and called me back to explain that I needed to make a deposit in order to secure my appointment. Now, I can understand the concept but immediately got turned off when the "deposit" was the full amount of the service in which I already paid to Groupon. She said that I had to give her $60 via CashApp or Zelle and IF/when I get serviced I will sign that I received the service and get a refund. No thank you. Asking people to trust you enough to send them the amount of the payment but not trusting your customers is tacky, and ghetto to say the least. I decided not to send my deposit and thought that would be self explanatory enough that I wouldn't be going to the appointment since it was never confirmed. This woman called my phone numerous times from more than one number, and then called me 7 hours after the appt time. When I didnt answer she texted me. Word of advice, stop harassing people who don't want your business and work on your professional etiquette! read more

I found her on Groupon and I originally went in just so I can schedule a appointment. I had a headache and I didn't feel like I could handle anymore pain. But somehow she convinced to just do it now and get it over with it instead of coming on that Saturday . I contemplated and I eventually gave in. I'm so happy i found her. I got a Brazilian wax and the process was great. Elaine is a black owned business and she specializes in hair removal. My husband purchased a 3-massage package for me on Groupon from Smart Spa. Its minutes from my home so I was very excited. I arrived before Elaine for 2/3 appointments which I thought was a bit unprofessional. However on both instances in which she was late she arrived within 10 minutes of my appointment time. One of the hair stylists in the business had to answer the door and let me into the waiting area. Elaine was really sweet but unfortunately she gave me the worst massage I have ever received. She used an extremely large quantity of oil and instead of massaging me she just rubbed oil all over my body. She rubbed vigorously up and down but there was no massage technique. There was no muscle isolation. There was only rubbing and oil and more oil and more oil and more oil. My 2 year old could have done what she did. It was awful and at first I thought she was merely applying oil to my body to come back and massage after the oil application ......but that was it. So for the 2 remaining massages I opted to get facials which I really enjoyed. The facials were relaxing and left my skin feeling clean and fresh. I'm really disappointed because what I wanted was a great spa to get a massage close to home. I will likely not return. Her facial is 5 star worthy. Her massage was worth 0 stars for an average of 2.5 with the .5 deducted for being late on 2/3 occasions. I bought a 60-minute Swedish Massage voucher from Living Social. When I called in April to make an appointment, a woman answered and told me that she was with a customer and would call me back. Two weeks later, no call and no appointment. In mid May I decided to make another attempt. At her request, I text her a copy of my voucher and she made the appointment. On the day of my appointment, I arrived a few minutes earlier than my scheduled time. She told me to wait because she was with another customer. My massage started 30 minutes later that my scheduled time! Elaine apologized, took my voucher information and then had me get undressed. I looked at the linens and towel and they did not look fresh. She must have realized what I was thinking and immediately commented that she had just changed them. I really don't think she had so I felt very uncomfortable. There was no robe; only a towel tossed on the table. The towel barely covered my torso. I told her that I currently had a headache. But, I guess that was not enough for her to turn down her radio which was set to 92.3. It was loud and not soothing at all. Imagine trying to relax to music from Nine Inch Nails. She poured what seemed like a whole bottle of oil on me and begin rubbing. She then took the liberty to mention that they also do facials and ear waxing. More oil, more rubbing. More oil, more rubbing. No massage, just rubbing. I've had tons of Swedish massages before, so I soon realized that I wasn't getting one now. Finally, I told her that she could add pressure. In her mind, I guess that meant rub faster because that's all that I got! This woman knows NOTHING about Swedish massages. She does not know how to give a massage at all. It was 50 to 55 minutes of lube and rub. HORRIBLE! Afterwards, she said that she wanted to put an elixir on my face for moisturizing. NO! I don't know what her fascination is with oil, but I got out of there! I didn't received a massage, which was very disappointing. I only got an oily rub down.
