Had such a great experience at Smash Brothers today! The burgers were seriously delicious crispy smash patties, flavorful sauce, perfectly toasted buns, and the fries were so good too. Everything tasted fresh and made with care. What really made the experience stand out though was how kind and welcoming the staff were. We brought our dog TobyShay, and they were so sweet to him, they even offered him a puppy patty which absolutely made our day They also surprised us with free soda, which was such a thoughtful gesture. You can tell they genuinely care about their customers and create such a friendly atmosphere. Great food, amazing service, dog-friendly, and overall just a really wholesome spot. They are now in a store front and not the food truck as the pictures show~ it's a cute little shop with a table and counter top seating. The owner was super nice and helped answer questions. We walked in trying to get smash burgers but got distracted by the chicken offerings- which ended up being really good! - The tendies had a great ratio to chicken to breading. It came with ranch and smash sauce- very good. - the onion rings were soooo good- I really liked the spices they used on them. It was our first time in Oakland and we rly needed something to eat. Smash Brothers came in hand specially since they were open pretty late. We called and placed an order and they were kind with the service. The burger was AMAZING it had the taste of the grill which was just delicious! The fries were mid there was nothing to it and when I asked for crispy it was still soft but it was good. The sauce went perfect with the Burger and I loved how much effort they put into their food. In addition to this being one of the best smash burgers that I've had in the East Bay, this establishment had excellent customer service and a nice ambiance. READ THIS FIRST: My spouse and I went on a mission to find a Smash Burger we liked that was closer to the house than hitting up Shake Shack in Emeryville. So we tried three Oakland burger joints based on reviews, (minimum four stars) all in one lunch. We bought one burger at each spot, shared it and then moved on to the next. We ordered all the burgers the same way, double patties, American cheese, house sauce, grilled onions, hold the pickle. Third place, Oh G Burger: Wasn't on point as far as a smash burger goes. Patties were a tad too thick and didn't quite get the Maillard Effect that makes smash burgers have that tasty outer crust. The sweet sauce (a bit overwhelming) and the grilled onion chips (kinda big chunks TBH) just made me think more of a regular burger than a smash burger, not a huge fan of the potato bun, not bad, obviously better than any fast food burger, just not a smash burger contender IMHO. Second Place, Lana's: Far and above better than Oh G, definitely a very close contender for first place. We did have to change the recipe to compare with the other two spots. Their house recipe had ketchup and mustard and we asked for their comparable 1000 Island sauce. Burger was really good, but drenched in a bit too much sauce. They use a grass fed beef, good quality I'm sure, but you need the fat to really get that crispy grilled taste and grass fed is pretty lean. I would go back though. Even with the potato bun. First Place, Smash Brothers: This was the first place we went on the list and it ended up being the best. I liked that the kitchen was open and I could see my food being prepared. At the other two places the grill was hidden from view. The cook immediately started browning the buns and grilling the thinly sliced onions, then pulled two ground beef golf balls from the refrigerated drawer and plopped them on the grill. He quickly smashed them into two super thin 7-inch discs, gave it about thirty seconds and flipped them over, threw on the cheese and grilled onions. By now the meat had shrunk to its intended size of about 4-inches. I would say the process took less than three minutes start to finish. This was by far the best burger for taste, consistency and the balance of flavors. Seared savory beef aroma with umami taste. The burger is ever so slightly smaller than the other two places, but it's less expensive too. Halal for those that care about that. Highly recommended. read more
