We were granted an unexpected babysitter and I have been trying to get here for months. Plenty of parking and not crowded which I surprised for a Saturday. Lovey greeted us at the hostess stand and brought us to a table. From the beginning she had such a positive aura. She made sure to get our table a lamp and QR menu. After bringing us waters and giving us time to review the menu. We decided to spilt the margarita flight. I got the mix and match taco combo with 1 crispy mushroom and 2 Baja fish tacos. I wanted to try the jackfruit but unfortunately some vegetarians had cleared the jackfruit before we got there (lol). My husband also got the mix and match combo with blackened salmon, surf and turf, and elote chicken. Both came with cilantro rice and black beans. We also got queso dip as an appetizer. Drinks came and then the appetizer shortly after. Drinks we delicious, with nice flavors. The Queso was good, nothing special. Those tacos, oh my goodness, chefs kiss. We both enjoyed them thoroughly. I just know that jackfruit taco is delicious. We enjoyed our time with the low key vibes. Good music shuffle, we could hear one another, and Lovey was great. A friend had her birthday dinner her and I'd say it was a pretty decent experience. The location is not hard to find and parking was plentiful. When we arrived around 7 pm, I was expected there to be lot of folks inside but that was not the case. Stepping into the restaurant for the first time, I must say I really liked the open setup, decor, and chill vibe. Once the dj arrived, the music blasted which kind of interrupted the chill vibe but all in all we had a great time. There were some drink specials and while I did not partake, I could see from the bar that there was a large selection of liquor and those who did order drinks said that they were pretty good. The menu We had a large party and while our waitress, Sally, was amazing but for a large party there should have been a bit more help besides her and one other waitress handling the other half of the group to help move service along. There were times were drink and food orders never showed but once we let them know items were missing, they apologized and would be back shortly with the items. I had the smash nachos and added shrimp. While it's considered and app the portion size was huge! I couldn't finish it and took it home to enjoy the next day which reheated well in the air fryer lol! The nachos were reallllly good and there was nothing lacking in terms of ingredients. My husband got the loaded shrimp quesadilla and he loved it. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meal and several folks talked about how good their margaritas were. This spot was a vibe indeed!! Not sure how long they've been there, but they have made there mark with the ambiance is so nice. It was later in the evening when I came through, so it wasn't crowded, really it was empty and it was ok with me! They had a DJ and he was jamming, I had my own dance party. The restroom was very roomy and clean. We sat at the bar, there bartender was cool! She did her thang with my Moscow Mules! We had this corn on the cob and shrimp tacos... I was to hungry and forgot food picks.... everything was yummy though! We did end up moving to the patio, though small and not the most comfortable for a hippy girl like me, but outside fresh air, is always a plus. He made serving look as easy as it's supposed to be...I'm glad this cute place is on the Eastside close to home if you want to hang out without doing too much, and the tacos are really good. They have a live DJ and they had a jazz band today which I really enjoyed. I had the smash burger taco, the jackfruit taco, bomb, and the oxtail tacos. The oxtail tacos were a bit undercooked and kind of chewy but they were fresh so I ate them. Came with rice, consomé, and beans. I loved the beans. I would have substituted the rice for more beans. Consomé was from the oxtail, it was kinda of salty. I think the consomé needs more flavor and maybe should be diluted to be less salty. But it was still good. I'm not drinking this month so I didn't try any of their cute drinks but the $9 mocktail was good. They put too much ice of course, it was over before you know it. We arrived and noticed a nice-sized shared parking lot. Luckily, we found a spot right in front of the restaurant. I'd heard before coming that this taco restaurant was in the same location where Cala Bar and Grill used to be. When we first approached, the place looked deserted and didn't even seem open. I tried the door closest to my parking spot, but it was locked. We walked to the left, tried another door, and that one opened. We entered and barely received a greeting. It looked like only two people were working the front of the house. We told one of the staff members that we wanted to sit outside, and we were met with a monotone "alright." She followed us outside, dropped off a small stand with a QR code, and said she'd be right back. Then things slowed down. After waiting a little while, I went back inside to let the bartender know we were ready to order. She said she'd let our server know. While we were waiting, I noticed the outside windows could have used a good wipe down, there were smudges everywhere. When our server arrived, she was very apologetic and pleasant. Her mood had definitely brightened up from when we were 1st greeted and we found out her name was Storm. By then, we had thoroughly reviewed the menu, which really had a lot of interesting options to choose from. We were ready to order drinks and food. Wifey and I both ordered Red Stripe beers. For entrées, I chose the Pollo Asado, and she ordered the Shrimp Quesadilla. The server explained that the Pollo Asado takes a little longer to cook and asked if we wanted an appetizer. We were debating between queso, guacamole, or both, and she suggested the Nachos appetizer since it came with both queso and guac, and it would be cheaper. That was a great tip, and we appreciated it. As we sat outside, we noticed some ants on the high-top table, so we decided to move inside. The bartender saw us and told us to pick any table we wanted. We found a small table for 2 and waved down our server to let her know about the move. She came over with the nachos, which arrived quickly and looked great. She then explained that the refrigerator was broken, so the Red Stripe beers weren't cold, and the Modelo on tap wasn't working. We quickly checked the remaining beer options, and my wife switched to her favorite,Blue Moon, while I went with a Creature Comforts Tropicalia. There was a little confusion with the beers at first, but it got sorted out. We snacked on the nachos and nearly finished all the chips. Our server, Storm, kindly offered to bring out more chips so we could scoop up the leftover nacho goodness. She also said she'd check on our food. When the entrées arrived, they were pretty big portions and everything looked delicious. I started digging into my Pollo Asado and I could tell it was deep fried and maybe a little too long. It was crispy on the outside but some of the actual chicken inside was dry and over cooked. As I mixed it with the Chimicuri sauce it tasted better and provided a little moisture to the chicken. Wifey loved her Shrimp Quesadilla and commented that she definitely would have enough to take home There were definitely a few hiccups during our first visit to Smash. Overall, the food was very good, but some of the service issues and cleanliness brought my rating down a little bit. This is by far one of the best Mexican restaurants on the east side! Location: This is the old Calabar and Grill location. It appears to be the same owners just a different food concept. Parking: They have a free limited parking in the front of the restaurant but it's plenty to park in the adjacent plaza parking lot for a very short walk. Food: If you haven't noticed by now, Mexican is my absolute fave! This is the BEST elotes that I've ever had. It has a jerk kick to it but it's seasoned to perfection! I had the tacos - fish, cauliflower and shrimp and hubby had the oxtails birria. There was nothing left! Ambiance: Again, this is the old Calabar so the sitting is still the exact same but it appears they have live music still which is a plus. Smash tacos and tequila is a very nice restaurant outside of the perimeter and it is located in Stone mountain. The decor is modern and clean and it has a masculine but feminine touch. The food and the service was good. We really enjoyed the music. It was so eclectic. The DJs played music from different countries, different genres and different time frames. My entire party is doing dry January so we got the mocktails and the mocktails were delicious. We had a variety of things. It was a large party of six. We all enjoyed the oxtail empanadas. We also enjoyed the habanero wings. They were very flavorful. The oxtail empanadas had a lot of oxtail in it and the empanada crust was just perfectly cooked. The oxtail birria tacos were very enjoyable. There were tacos that were vegan also that people enjoyed. The entree outside of the tacos was Pollo asado which was very flavorful. The garlic sauce that's used in the restaurant on a couple of different dishes is absolutely delicious. I think they've done a very nice job with the transition from Calabar to Smash Tacos and Tequila. I love the food! The ambiance is perfect for a modern, sophisticated atmosphere to hang out with your friends, but Friday and Saturday nights are great for a date because of the live DJ or band. Sometimes the food comes out slow, but that's because everything is made fresh to order. My favorites are the elote corn, the Barrio tacos, and the seafood pasta! Oh, wait--the oxtail empanadas are a MUST HAVE! And there is a price everyone can afford, in just the right portions--because you can order a lot or a little. Loved the old restaurant "Calabar" that used to be here, so I was very curious to try their new place. I figured food would be good because it was the same managers. When I tell you these tacos were GOOD.. I wish I took more pictures! They have great Taco Tuesday deals with a dollar off of most tacos besides the oxtail birria. They also have $8 drinks and $5 shots. The interior is also beautiful. The kitchen and service were a bit slow, but I gave them grace since they are a new spot. Parking is tight but it's located in a shopping center so you can park and walk it's definitely not to bad. When we came it was crowded! No one was at the door when we walked in and although there were empty tables we were told we had to wait so we ended up sitting near the bar. They had a Live DJ playing music and the music was decent. We had to flag down a waitress to place our order it was really crazy on this Saturday night sheeeeeeeesh!!! My first visit was jus recently for a pre-bday celebration on the night of March 1st. The drinks were "ASTONISHINGLY SUPERB"! Im a casual drinker. Soooo I so wanted to enjoy the experience. They have been posting consistently on IG and it seemed like such a vibe. Perfect opportunity to try out on Saturday for a birthday dinner. They advertised a tequila takeover with happy hour drink specials from 9-11 and live music from a dj. Weird wording but whatever we came. The DJ was pretty solid. We were a few mins before 9 so we just ordered a margarita flight. JUICE. Honestly could have just went to get Hawaiian Punch from the store. Once it turned 9, we ordered shots to rev us up. My friend and I decided to try this place after seeing it advertised for National margarita day on Instagram. When we arrived, we had to wait to be seated. The seating process was hectic, the host was overwhelmed. He informed us that there were only 2 waitresses working. We were concerned about the level of service we would receive but decided to wait because we were hungry. When we were seated after about a 20 min wait, the host took our initial drink orders. My friend's water arrived with what looked like the plastic ring off of the neck of a bottle in it. We had to wait to catch the host again to ask him to bring her another one. At that time no server had come to us. The host apologized and replaced her water. We sat for more time with no server greeting us. We finally caught someone who said they would help us shortly. When she came back, she apologized and told us that the host was seating people without telling the servers and that's why we hadn't been helped. I informed her that I had an intolerance for spicy food, and to please let me know if anything I order is spicy so that I can order differently. She said she would. I stressed that I could not eat spicy food at all. We ordered the nachos as an appetizer to share and the waitress said nothing in it was spicy except for the jalapeños which she would bring on the side for my friend to eat separately. My friend and I both ordered the oxtail birria tacos. She said nothing was spicy in that dish. Our entrees came out a few minutes before our appetizer. I tasted my tacos and they were fine. I dipped them in the consommé and my mouth began to burn after a few bites. The consommé was indeed spicy. I tasted my beans and rice. The beans were spicy too. I tried the nachos, the queso dip in them was spicy. I finished my tacos without eating anymore of the consommé. The tacos were on the smaller side so I was still hungry but couldn't eat any more of the nachos because the queso sauce was unavoidable. Another lady walked by not in uniform but was helping the tables. We asked her for refills and I informed her that my food was entirely too spicy even though I had disclosed my medical intolerance to the server. She flatly asked "it's too spicy?" And I explained again that I have a medical condition and asked the server before ordering. She said "I'll let the cooks know." And left. She offered no apology or attempt to rectify the situation. When the server finally came back. I let her know that several of the elements of my meal were too spicy. She seemed concerned and disappointed. She apologized. She said she had tried all elements of my meal in the past and never found them personally spicy. I told her with medical intolerances it's less about personal preference and more about ingredients. We agreed that maybe the kitchen switched things up without notice. We learned from our server that the lady I initially spoke to about this was the owner. Shocking to say the least. No one offered me a replacement appetizer or anything to rectify the situation. I sat at the restaurant getting sicker and sicker waiting on the bill. I am writing this on Monday, my visit was Saturday and I am still suffering from ill effects from the food I ate at Smash. Please educate the staff & kitchen on food intolerances/allergies. I have attached pictures for reference. The pictures show that the items I ordered are not denoted as spicy on the menu. Spicy items have a pepper next to them on the menu. This was a disappointing experience. My friend agreed with me on the spice level of the food. The DJ was good & the server seemed sweet. The food tasted good besides the heat. There's plenty of parking in the back. I used to go to this place when it was Calabar & had better experiences. I understand that they were busy but that doesn't excuse the lack of care shown by management. I would not recommend this place based on the lack of care & knowledge shown by staff as well as the staffing issues & my friends drink being tainted. Gratuity is included. Walked up to the establishment at 9:50 pm for their taco Tuesday , as we approached a woman smoking hookah told the hostess to tell us their kitchen was closing in 10 minutes. We asked if we could order quickly being that we already knew what tacos we wanted (we like to menu browse prior to dining) . The hostess shook her head no.. Online their closing time is 11:00 pm. I would also like to mention there were a plethora of people at the bar, patio and tables . Today was my husband's birthday so the entire family went. As we were walking up a group of Deltas were leaving and no one else was in the restaurant. Before I could open the door the worker told me no kids were allowed after 7. I'm not sure why because Red Lobster sells alcohol too and children are allowed all night long. This restaurant needs all the patrons they can get or it will close down like the restaurant that was there before it.
