I have driven by it hundreds of times and never seen it before. The store seems to be comparable to Whole Foods prices. A clerk saw me looking at the supplements and offered to help me. She knew exactly where the one I wanted was. I love checking out all the low sugar or no sugar snacks. I was surprised to not see any low carb tortillas though. I bought some organic spices and pork chorizo. The spices were about $1-2 more than organic herbs and spices sold on regular grocery stores. The produce looked really nice. The Romaine lettuce was big, leafy and fresh looking for $3.99; the same price I paid for non-organic and subpar product at Red Barn Market that is close to me. It's a great little store to check out.

The produce section is usually solid, and I especially want to shout out the gentleman in charge of produce--he's consistently friendly, knowledgeable, and always great to talk to. That kind of service really stands out. That said, my experiences with staff have been mixed. Some employees are kind and helpful, but others can come off as unfriendly or impatient. I'm diabetic, so I often ask detailed questions when nutritional information isn't clearly listed, especially at the juice/smoothie bar. Unfortunately, the people working there don't always seem knowledgeable about protein amounts, milk options, or fruit content, and a few times the attitude felt dismissive rather than helpful. I've also noticed that the hot bar food isn't always kept at proper temperature, which is concerning, especially for a place that emphasizes health and quality. Overall, Lassens has a lot of potential and some genuinely great employees, but consistency is an issue. Better staff training--especially around nutrition knowledge and customer service--would really improve the experience.

But seriously, upon getting the opportunity to sample their food and to learn that they were a local meal prep and delivery service out of the 805, I knew I had to give them a try. I was six months into actively going to the gym and the next step was to take control of my eating habits. The idea of having healthy meals portioned and cooked for me sounded like such a lifesaver and would take all of the work and prep out of cooking which was the major selling point. When doing a meal prep service I look at 1. Taste 2. Price 3. Variety of the Meals and 4. Simplicity of delivery/pickup. Mel Eats delivers on every aspect! First off all the good actually tastes really good. That's the most important, for it to be sustainable for me I have to like what I'm eating. I appreciate that they have three portion sizes to pick from. Some tailored at leaning out/weight loss, some just to maintain a healthy physique, or bulking for the gym bros/gals. It's very simple ordering the meals and customizing them online. I like that you can customize everything - from the protein, to the carb/sides, the veggies you want, and the sauces. Also they have two rotating weekly specials for meals and overnight oats. This is KEY. In needing variety and something exciting, I love that they have perfected bringing new bites to their weekly menus. Pricing is super reasonable in my opinion. The meals range from I think $14-$17 based on your portion size. Also the more meals you buy they take off $1-2 a plate. I usually walk away with a meal for each day, 5 days a week, under $65. You really can't beat it. Also delivery is only $7 which I think is awesome. Pickup throughout Ventura County is free at their set locations which is nice for those saving every dollar. I've done both delivery and pickup, both were seamless and easy. Aside from all of the great things I've already mentioned, the customer service here is A+. Everytime I reach out to them on their social media instagram page or through their customer service email they reply back same day. They truly make you feel like a valued customer and they are always professional and polite when I engage with them. I feel really lucky to have stumbled upon them this summer. I'm at four months of meals with these guys and I don't know what I'd do without them. Mel Eats is a lifesaver when it comes to meal prep and I'm happy I've gotten a few friends ordering from them. I saw he was busy so I politely apologized for bothering him and explained I was pretty much clueless on where to go, what to do etc. He told me to check in. I asked him where to do so and he told me to do it the same way I ordered. I ordered on Amazon so tried to open it. Well that store has horrible internet so it took a minute but the only option was curbside vs in store. I again apologized and explained. He told me he wasn't familiar with the app and turned away. I just stood there. Another woman arrived and seemed to be helping out but when I tried to ask her for help, she rather abruptly told me they were busy and other people were waiting. I would not have flinched if she, in a semi polite manner would have simply said something like, "we have quite a few orders but if you don't mind waiting a moment, we will help you." Instead I felt awkward and embarrassed. She did find my order which was handed to me in an efficient but not warm and friendly way and that was it. I came around 11:00am and it wasn't busy at all. There were maybe 6 people in the store and 2 people in line. The store was really clean and mostly stocked full. The layout is different than the Oxnard ones so it took me much longer than usual due to not knowing the layout so I did a lot of back and forth. The aisle of shame was very confusing as they had random non-special/non-seasonal stuff right smack in the middle of it like random chips that are sold everyday that are also displayed where the designated chips section is on the next aisle over. There were some German week items here that were not at the Oxnard location last week. So that was a win. Since I'll be moving to Ventura soon, this is going to be my new Aldi for weekly shopping and I am looking forward to it (again because it's not as crowded).
