I've passed by Smashy several times and after looking on Yelp I decided to check it out. The other Yelpers were right, this is a great find! I saw some compared it to 7th Street Burger but I found these to be less greasy and messy. The burgers are very thin and have a nice sear on them. I ordered mine without onions and they made my burger fresh. They had other burgers ready to go and it looked like they must make them regularly because it was busy, but I enjoyed the one I had which was made to order. The single burger was $6. There's nothing particularly /wrong/ with this place. They've got a clean blue and white theme which is aesthetically pleasing. The prices are amazing at $5 for a single and $7 for a double. You can choose between classic (mustard/ketchup) and house (mayo) sauces for your burger. Service is quick - they have burgers ready to go at all times it seems. The burgers themselves are rather on the small size, but reasonable considering the price. There seems to be a bit too much bread for how much meat there is. There isn't anywhere to sit in the store but you can walk over to the park nextdoor for a seat. It's a cute, small burger but can you really complain for under $5.50? Generic Martin's potato bun. Nice char, crispy edges. The house sauce is more mayo forward, so it's more on the savory side. Imo, if the sauce was a touch sweeter and had a slight spicy component to it, it would be really good. As is, it's good and just filling enough to hold off the hunger until you get to a bigger meal. The pickle slice in the burger was twice as thick as the patty. The classic comes with ketchup and mustard House comes with their special mayo sauce. Hmm can I have both sauces ? Cashier said no. Ok I decided to try the house sauce. Heeded no seating and the counter for standing and eating is not short people friendly . I hit the park to find a spot to eat. I already knew it was small so I was hoping the taste would be impressive. They add onions to the patty while it's grilling and I do enjoy those charred oniony bites. Sadly there was only one tiny ring ( like from the very middle of the onion ) on my patty. The secret sauce tasted like mayo salt and pepper. Overall this wasn't the taste experience I was expecting. Don't chuck it up to it's what you get for $5 cause a lot of very delicious foods are priced at that range. The first place in Budapest has over 5,500 google reviews and counting with a 4.7 average so there was some buzz when they first opened a week or so before. They definitely are more for take out as there isn't much space to sit with the spot being quite narrow but that's fine with the park nearby so I think another perfect location would be across from Bryant Park for very similar reasons. The staff was friendly and the inside is clean. By comparison to all the other smash burger places, the spot is simple and cheap and very efficient with the burgers being pre-prepared and packaged. A single cheeseburger is $4.99 and a double is $6.99 (with the doubles back in Hungary being 1990 Forint/so around $1.50 cheaper) with the burgers also having American cheese, pickles, grilled onions, and then it is your choice between Classic and House style. The former is with a mix of ketchup and mayo while the latter is a mayo base with a slight tang. The house style sauce is quite mayo heavy but I didn't mind as it felt different than the usual sauce you find in smash burger places. Along with burgers, they have fries for $2.99 along with glass bottles of Coke for $2.99 or water for $1.99. For the burger itself, it tasted very fresh so I presume it was packed very recently. it was of course a bit smaller due to the price point and I think one single makes a perfect snack while a double would make a light meal. The potato bun, which is apparently different from what was used originally in Hungary, worked here with the meat which I would say is lacking a little bit of crunch compared to the better albeit pricier smash burger spots though I think part of this comes with them being smaller. Possibly the more popular double (which is the only option in Hungary) which is only two bucks more is a bit crispier and better due to the double patty but I won't know that until next time I have their burger. Due to the less crispy patty, the single was almost more similar to a very good slider than a smash burger outside of the light bit of crunch and that's especially the case with the lack of tomato or other fresh vegetables. Is this the best smash burger in the city? No and not that close. It is however one of the cheaper versions and for the price point and quality, I can see them becoming very popular and I can also see why they are very popular in Budapest where cheap tasty comfort food is definitely one of the highlights there along with most of Central Europe. They have a simple menu--burgers, fries, and soda (or water). You can see the burgers being made. You can get a single or double, and you can get classic or house (which is a mayo-based sauce). I got the single with house sauce and fries--a cheap meal, especially for Manhattan. I paid around $8 for it. It's not the heartiest meal, but it was satisfying for me. There was another customer who thought the bag was light. The customer service was good, the employee taking orders explained the difference between the classic and the house sauce. It's a small place, you would take your food to go. I told a colleague about it, and he said it used to be a Chinese restaurant called Beyond Wok--he decided to check out Smashy and liked it. Out of all the smash burger spots I've been to in recent memory , this one sits at the bottom of them all. For starters , the burgers are prepared and wrapped beforehand and sit in what I presume is a warming station until someone orders it . This is not the same as a freshly prepared burger but u understand with the kind of volume they can experience why they would do this . Another issue I had with this burger was the cheese . The piece of American cheese they use was way too overpowering for this smash burger . It felt like eating a cheese sandwich at times as the patty was just nowhere to be found and not having pickles or other toppings didn't help in that cause either . Thirdly, the patty itself didn't have that signature crispness , perhaps it was just the wrong day I tried it but that's a big feature I look for in a smash burger . Finally , this restaurant is standing room only and has 0 chairs ! I think even small stools could've been placed for convenience but the chose not to.
