I would strongly recommend getting a second opinion before agreeing to treatment here. My adult daughter, who has NEVER had a cavity, was told she had 5 cavities under old sealants- just six months after a clean checkup with her previous dentist. The diagnosis didn't sit right, especially since her cleaning felt incomplete (only used the ultrasonic scaler) and no traditional dental instruments or flossing. Given how unusual this diagnosis sounded, she sought a second opinion and was told she in fact has no cavities at all- just staining on the sealants. Very concerning experience. I would be cautious before proceeding with any recommended dental work here from Dr. Alano. read more

I feel like my review is long overdo for this dental office. I was referred here by my mom, who also goes here. Like a lot of people, I'm beyond terrified of the dentist due to bad past experiences. I would get a second opinion. I went in for a check up and was told I had all these cavities/decay and needed deep cleaning and multiple visits which with insurance wouldn't have been too bad but I decided to go to another dentist in brea that friends recommended and the "cavities and decay" were actually just staining and I only need a crown and not the deep cleaning as recommended previously. I decided to try Smiling Hills Dental as my former dentist had sold her practice. I am really impressed with how friendly and efficient Dr. Alano and his staff are at this office. Joanna at the front desk is very helpful with any questions you may have about your insurance coverage. Evelyn assisting in procedures is top notch. I feel they are very considerate of your time and do not overbook their appointments. Having been here on two visits, I have never had to wait. Dr. Alano gives you a very comprehensive explanation of any procedures along with both explaining dental x-rays and pictures of your teeth. I can't recall my former dentists being as thorough and taking this extra time to give such a clear and understandable explanation. It helps alleviate a bit of the anxiety on what to expect on a future visit. I have a regular dentist, that I see but due to my hectic work schedule, Smiling Hills Dental was closer and convenient at the time... boy was I wrong. I went to see Dr. Alano because I had a chipped tooth and he told me I needed a crown. So I went in a second time to get my crown and afterwards, my tooth was very sensitive and I was in a lot of pain. I reached back out to Dr. Alano and his secretary informed me that I needed a root canal instead... which upset me because I could have just gotten a root canal from the beginning. So after paying for & going through the pain of getting a crown, they now wanted me to pay for a root canal and go through this agony again. Understandably I asked for a refund for the crown but they said no. It is very clear that they don't value customer service or satisfaction and it's safe to say that I won't be going back to Smiling Hills. Lesson learned, "easy & convenient" should never be in the same thought bubble as "dentist." read more

Dr. Alano is a straight shooter, and has made recommendations that actually work to his detriment. The dental industry is full of mills, and I've never gotten the impression that Dr. Alano is following in those footsteps. I moved to the area a while ago but I was still driving 1.5 hours to see my regular dentist, I finally got tired of the drive and I decided I needed to find someone local. I was dreading finding someone new BUT I'm beyond happy with the service I've received. I had some cavities and a crown that needed to be put in and although it wasn't fun Dr. Alano made sure I was comfortable the entire time. I really like the fact that he took the time to explain everything that he was going to do to me, he constantly asked if I was okay and he genuinely cared about fixing my cavities and preventing and minimizing the damage to my teeth. I don't ever write reviews because I'm lazy but Dr. Alano and his staff deserve 5 stars. He's probably the best dentist I've ever been to. The office is super clean and I never have to wait more than 5 minutes to get taken in for my appointment. My last dental visit before this was a nightmare as the doctor left me with an incredible amount of sensitivity in my tooth, worsening the problem I came in for. I went to two other dentists to try and fix it but they told me they didn't have a solution for me. I was so scared of the dentist after that I waited 3 YEARS and did nothing and it worsened to the point where room temperature water was undrinkable on one side of my mouth. I explained all of this to Dr. Alano and he was super understanding and compassionate of the fact that I was traumatized after my last dental experience. He was extremely gentle and didn't make me feel annoying for asking so many questions. Besides the fact that he's a great dentist, he's also very personable and super funny to talk to! For example, I told him I was going on a New York trip and he literally wrote down a mini list of suggestions for places I should go. Who takes the time to even do that?? Amazing. Joanna helped schedule my appointments and was very flexible as I cancelled last minute like a million times but they were always able to work around my schedule. Dr. Alano's assistant, Evelyn was super nice and friendly as well! All in all, staff are 10/10. Needless to say, Dr. Alano fixed my tooth in the end! I am now able to eat normally and eat cold things without suffering. I'm able to use the right side of my mouth again to eat. Out of the infinite list of dental providers covered by my insurance, I randomly chose to try Dr. Alano. Talk about serendipity. Hands down, it was the best dental visit I've had in my life! I changed insurances recently and chose this dentist office as it is so close to me. Although I get regular cleanings, I hadn't had xrays in awhile. He found four cavities and showed each them to me on a big screen and I could see the decay with my own eyes. He did all four filings and my cleaning. The experience was so much better than my other dentist office from before when I had to have ONE cavity filled and this time I had to have FOUR. Little to no pain and desensitized the tooth as well!
